"Correcting" the bend at the edges of photos taken with a wide-angle lens.

I took a bunch of photos with a wide-angle lens. Naturally, this curves the image at the edges, so buildings at the edges appear to be leaning. I've been told that most photography software has a feature that can "correct" this. I'm wondering how to do this with Aperture. Please advise.

Hi Graham,
I see this statement a lot. That Aperture is a DAM and not an edit tool. This is not correct. Apple says that Aperture is "Powerful photo editing and management" and technically there is no reason why Aperture should not have a lens correction tool. It has dodge and burn now, why not more?
Also you could argue that Aperture is not a DAM system as it only handles images, and not all digital assets.
I far as I see Aperture its purpose is to manage and edit photos.

Does the new IOS 8 and instagram only allow pictures taken with the phone? as I can still choose from those, just not the ones I upload/save.
I don't know about instagram, but apps, that not yet have been upgraded to iOS8 can only access the photos that appear in the "Recently Added" album, because there is no longer a Camera Roll.
As a work-around, try to create an album of the photos you want to share to instagram. For other apps this helped to make photos accesible.

  • Correcting stretched image by wide angle lens

When I shoot with a Canon EF-S 10mm-22mm, the edge of the images are often stretched - people's heads become oval, for example. I tried all kinds of lens correction Aperture plug-ins such as PTLens, only found out that they only correct barrel distortion and perspective distortion, not the "stretch" near the edge of the image. Anyone knows an Aperture plug-in that can correct "edge stretch"? Or is there a function within Aperture (or Photoshop) that does the job? Thanks much.

I know exactly what you are looking for. There was a Photoshop plug-in called "squeeze" by the well respected The Imaging Factory, which closed down in 2007. However you can still download it and get a free license key by the look of it.
It does exactly what you want, which is progressively squeezing the edges so that people at the edge of a group taken with a wide angle lens look natural. The centre is unaffected. The conventional lens correction programs do not do this.
There is no UB version, so it is necessary to re launch Photoshop in Rosetta.
I have been hunting high and low for a replacement, so if you find one for Aperture or Photoshop please post here. I have mainly been searching for a Photoshop plugin so maybe there is an Aperture plugin.
I think this is a real opportunity for a developer.
Sorry not to be more help.... I am posting in the hope that someone may come up with something.

  • Lightroom, 5.5, Mac version: lens metadata incomplete and/or inconsistent.  Photos taken with the same camera and lens display the lens metadata differently in LR 5.5, but are the same in the original files

LR is putting different descriptions of the same lens, used with the same camera, in the metadata of photos taken on the same occasion.
    For example:
The following two images were taken with the same camera and lens.
They were imported at the same time into LR by copying.
The only difference in treatment is that the first was an untouched out-of camera jpeg, the second had been flipped using Preview on the Mac.
The one that was flipped has a full description of the lens, the one that was untouched has an abbreviated description.
When you show the file in the Finder and read the metadata using Preview, the correct full lens description appears.
Why is LR displaying the metadata differently for these two files?

Can you zip up a few of your GoPro images, upload them to dropbox.com and post a share link, here, so others can experiment with them, or do you mean this issue is global to all camera models?

there were frequent purple line appear on photo taken with my iPhone 5 camera, is this the defect of product?

So it looks like I ran out of AppleCare two weeks ago, what a shame. I guess it's not worth $260 to receive a new handset simply for a dusty camera. However this is still annoying due to the fact that the phone shouldn't have dust behind the lens anyway. I think this situation is a bit unfair since this is a malfuntion of hardware and it is also disappointing that so many people have this problem with the iPhone 5 in particular. :X
Thanks for your help though Templeton!

    Hi,
why are not all photos taken with an iphone available on the icloud, even that i made some fotos at the same time?
Some of these photos are afterwards available on fotostream others not.

If they are in photos view then they are in an event unless you have a corrupted library
    How are you"merging" the photos?
most common issue is either bad sort (view menu ==> sort events) or bad camera dates
select one and show event to see the event

  • I own the Canon SX 50 HS and love it, however, I like the wide angle lens on the SX60 HS

The Canon sx 50 hs is an amazing little camera with great zoom capability and clarity.  I have had it a little over 1 year.  The new sx 60 hs has a few new features that I love...the wider angle lens, and the create custom effects.  However, the stability of the camera is very shaky when zooming out.  I am questioning the value of upgrading from the 50 to 60.
My shots are more abstract....zooming in on structures, eyes, etc.  I can take photos from my car with the 50 but not sure that would be possible with the 60.  I appreciate any input....or, is there another canon with the long zoom lilke by 50 with a few of the 60's features.
Thanks so much for your input,

That is an aweful lot of zoom range to try and hold steady. The longer the focal length, the greater the shake will be, and the more a tripod or monopod is needed. Even long zooms for DSLR's have a difficult time with camera shake at the very long end of the zoom if not supported with a tripod. Any slight movement of your hand is greatly magnified at the long range and getting a steady shot can be near impossible. I would set up on a tripod and start to zoom in on the subject, then make adjustments to keep the subject centered in the view, then once you have the composition the way you want, zoom in the rest of the way. Then set a delay of at least two seconds for the shutter when you do take the shot. A remote trigger would be even better to avoid any possible camera shake.

  • Recommendation for correct wide angle lens and flash for real estate photos for Canon Rebel T3i?

Hi I'm new to the forum. I always hire out a professional photog for my real estate photos however have thought that with the amount that I pay them, I could buy my own wide angle lens to do on my own.
Any recommendations for what wide angle lens and flash to buy?
Here are some examples of the work they have done in the past for me:
Any advice would be much appreciated. I enjoy amateur photography with my family and portraits but am hoping to be able to do more of my own work on my listings. Thanks!

Your samples look like incredibility simple images to do. I also suspect little artificial light was added. Possibly just a bounce off the ceiling.
Since you already have a Rebel T3i, I would get the Canon 430 EX, and just one. But be aware it will likely not provide equal coverage for a 10-22mm lens. Ten millimeters is pretty wide even on a T3i. Bouncing off the ceiling will help this.
Some ceilings may not be good for bounce either.
Give it a go and you will learn what works and what not. But the old saying, KISS, applies.  You will learn!
Photshop and/or Lightroom are great additions. They both have learning curves and PS a very long learning curve.

  • Emailed photos taken with iPhone not being received

Emailed photos taken with iPhone not being recieved.
Photos I have taken with the iPhone and then emailed are never received. I have sent them to two different yahoo accounts and neither account received the photos... I sent both using EDGE and WIFI... Same trouble with both...
Any idea why this feature is not working ?
    Thanks,
    -Frank

    Now it's magicly working.... maybe....
I did as you asked and sent myself emails from my iphone and nothing was received.... tried sending to my yahoo account and my work account... did this 3 or 4 times and nothing was received and nothing was shown as being sent... even though I caould hear the "sent" sound each time....
I then tried sending to my personal and my work accounts and also added one of those to the "CC" line... so that email had 2 email address in the "To:" line and 1 eamil address in the "cc:" line... That one worked just fine !!! got it twice in my personal account and once in my work account.
I then tried emailing the same photo that I had tried before and it too worked correctly...
The only itmes that have shown up in my sent box are the last tow... the email with multipul addresses and the photo that I sent right after...
So... it appears to be owrking at the moment...
Thanks for your help... I'm not sure why it's working now.. but at least it is...
    Thanks for you help,

  • Photoshop CS4 does not recognize raw photos taken with newer cameras. Anyone else have this problem?

Photoshop CS4 will not recognize RAW2 photos taken with my new Panasonic Lumix FZ100 camera. This camera is listed in Adobe's 6.2 Camera Raw update for Photoshop CS5 but cannot be loaded in CS4. I paid a lot of money for CS4 and don't want to buy CS5 just because I bought a new camera, but it appears that Adobe no longer updates Camera Raw for CS4 or with newer cameras. When I called the Help Desk to find out if there was some kind of patch I could get to make CS4 compatible with my new camera a gentleman in New Delhi informed me that he couldn't even answer my question until I paid $40 since answering questions about CS4 was a "paid service." I hung up in a rage. Does anyone else have this problem and is there a solution?

This camera is listed in Adobe's 6.2 Camera Raw  update for Photoshop CS5 but cannot be loaded in CS4.
Adobe does indeed not update obsolete versions of Camera Raw for new camera types.
And guess what: It’s the camera producers who seem to like to change their raws – so how about spreading some of your indignation their way?
I paid a lot of  money for CS4 and don't want to buy CS5 just because I bought a new  camera
The upgrade is cheaper than buying the full version.
Anyway, you could try the free DNG Converter which should be able to handle everything the most recent version of Camera Raw can handle.
