Corrupt 160gb Lacie Ext. HD, I/O error

First, the specs:
Powerbook G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f3
Here's my issue:
I purchased a Lacie 160gb firewire 600 external harddrive designed by Porsche. Stored on said drive was an entire feature film in Final Cut Pro format, including FCP files, capture scratch, and render files, etc. The drive functioned normally for approximately 5 months until yesterday, when capturing more footage, the drive failed to respond and umounted itself.
Presuming it was the casing/IDE ribbon/general IO corruption causing the error, I purchased another external casing - CompUsa brand, with 2 firewire 600 ports and 1 USB 2.0. After switching the drive from the lacie casing to the additional external casing, the same problem occurred.
I ran the disk utility. It recognized the drive as I had named it (Turbo 911... Ironic, No?) so I tried to run a verify and repair on the disk, and came up with this error message:
Verify and Repair disk “TURBO911”
** /dev/disk1s1
** Phase 1 - Read FAT
Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 non HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
I attempted to connect the drive to other mac systems, including an iMac G4 and Powermac G5, but no dice. I ran PROSOFT Data Rescue II and tried to recover the data, which I can successfully complete at any given time... However, it will only allow me to recover the CBR folder and subfolders therein, meaning that I lost the names of all the files, meaning that it will be nearly impossible to reconnect all the files in final cut, meaning that I'll essentially have to start from square one, meaning that I'm sitting here with my head in my hands, listening to rammstein and trying to fix my drive via ESP. I'm considering opening iSledgeHammer and using it on my hard drive, followed by iDrinkingBinge and iGoBackToBeingBroke. In the mean time, iNeedSleep and tiLenol. Thanks in advance for whatever help you may be able to offer... at this juncture, I'd rather hear that the four horsemen of the apocalypse are steadily and hastily making their way towards Miami than "Sorry, no luck, abandon all hope, resistance is futile."
Thanks,

... my computer wouldn't start up it just went to the grey apple screen and then hung. So I started it in single user mode and fsck -fy it and it came up with invalid node structure, disk i/o error.
You need Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to fix that error, Disk Utility, as you found, won't. And booting from your DVD to run DU would be older than what you installed on your LaCie.
Looking this up I found that this probably means a dead HD
AHT doesn't look at the file structure or directory and all you have is a corrupt directory. If Disk Warrior can't fix it, you can erase the drive and should be fine. Would be better to erase with the option "zero all" though.
And you should always have backups of your data and bootable emergency drive, which you now have.
What does this mean?
Did the power go out or did you force the computer to shutdown? that is the most common. Filling a drive beyond 85% can also. You have 153GB, so that means you should have no more than 138GB or so used.
For $75 you can get 300GB or 500GB for $127 and up to $168.
I didn't back anything up... without expensive data recovery costs?
Disk Utility can. Restore tab. You'll want to have a 160GB partition to restore to. Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3 is another http://www.bombich.com
I've got a Dual 2 Ghz PowerPc G5 with 512 MB DDR SDRAM and a 160 Western Digital internal HD running OS X 10.4
I would want to upgrade RAM with at least 1GB (2 x 512) or 2 x 1GB. And make sure you have two backups and a 2nd internal drive. A new and larger drive will also perform better, and let you use your old drive after you reformat it as data backup.

  • LaCie ext RW drive reads but won't write

I want to burn something on the LaCie ext drive but it won't work. I've done it a ton of times before, but now any one of the multiple virgin CD discs that I put in (and am sure are correct and for writing) fail to show up on Toast. Also, on disc utility it says that the CD is for "read only" -- which ain't so! Think the drive just needs replaced?? (It's about 3-4 years old.) Thanks.

    Dear Cine Alter,
If the two drives are appearing on your desktop that would suggest physical connections are OK. If you have not already done so, start up from you OSX CD and rebuild your directory. Then rebuild Permissions, Restart and see how you go. This process should clean up any directory corruptions which may be responsible for the problem. You should run both of these programs monthly to ensure corruptions do not creep into your system.
If the problem persists restart from OSX CD and try un-mounting and re-mounting each disk with Disk First Aid. Restart and see how you go.
    Good Luck,
    Tony

i am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??

You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

So after freshly installing Win 8.1 I was happy, untill I started to play some games that I previously played on Win 7, I've started to get a whole heap of errors, I did have more written down but have lost the bit of paper they were written on.

Make sure your hard drive is formatted properly for the operating system installed.  Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to determine what it is.  You posted to the 10.5 forum, but your signature says you have 10.9.  Here is the tip on what formatting supports what operating systems:

  • LaCie Ext drive

I have a LaCie Ext Drive. I turned it on today and it didn't appear on my desktop. I checked the USB connection in back of the computer and just pressed it in a little harder and icon appeared. I tread brining this big iMAC in to be repaired. What other things can I troubleshoot before resorting to that?
The connection was already pretty tight when I pushed it in so I really don't know if it was a coincidence that it started working after I did that. So it's not like it was very loose. Should I get a new USB cable? Could the USB port be faulty? I'm concerned that if the drive gets disconnected while it is operating, it will get damaged or cause files to be damaged. My puter is 2 years old and the drive is
less than a year old. Never had ANY problems with either until now. Any advice?

  • ITunes wont copy to Lacie external hard drive-unknown error-50

All goes well until I choose "Consolidate Library" from advanced menu in iTunes.
Unknown error -50 appears every time. Plenty of free space on the Lacie and I can move single items so no prob with fire wire connection. What can I do ?

You could try (provided you have enough diskspace) to 'consolidate library' to a location on your internal hard disk and then copy the folder over via the finder.
    Good Luck!

  • Corrupted/Locked out apple ID "An Unknown Error has occurred" logging into support?

I was forced to use a different apple id to log into this support community because all attempts from different devices and browsers using another ID have ended up at the password prompt with "An unknown error has occurred" at the community login screen.  The ID can still be "manged" and appears to be able to make purchases from the iTunes Store over the internet.  A phone incident case number 388249960 was opened and I spent over an hour on the phone with this problem.  The ID in question was set up more than two years ago to help with my wife's iPad 1 which we paid 800 plus for,,, all the storage and bells and whistles.  Recently she started using the iTunes store to purchase and download television series and we got in trouble because her directories were filling the c:drive on a Vista Business computer she normally uses.  Before starting to deal with the problem of storage, I tried to make sure everything was up to date and downloaded/installed the latest iTunes 11.0,1,, to her machine.  I already had it on another machine running Windows 7 and two older Windows XP machines.    All of them were "tested" for home networking to our Apple TV so that I could go to the TV and find a computer which could be used as a source for streaming music, videos, etc., etc. all based on her ID.  As of this writing, I believe all of that functionality still exists, but, when I navigate to support and try to log in using her ID and password, I get re-prompted for the password and then "Locked Out" when "An Unknown Error Has Occurred" pops up above the login via the web site.
I am writing this after much agony and travial via an obsolete instance of Windows Explorer running on Windows XP Home Premium on an old portable using a newly created Apple ID which does not appear to have the same problems logging into the support community.  Can anyone out there help me?
I have gone to war with Comcast's "free" security enhancement software "Constant Guard" believing that it might be the source.  This machine had it installed at one time and has had it completely removed, but... it still experiences the error when my wife's ID is used.
The issue may be related to the recently added requirement for secuity questions and recovery email addresses which I tried to address for her ID and inadvertently ran into conflict/problem with using certain other email addresses with her ID.  Perhaps something is corrupted in the database for her ID, or related to problems with support for esoteric things like Microsoft's .NET enhancements which I have long been using on my computers, or possibly Constant Guard "started" the problem because it was probably running when account security data was being updated via the Apple web site?  I tried to get information about what I thought was the "recovery email address" associated with her account and was told by Apple Web sites that it was "in use" as an apple ID and could not be used as her recovery address.  When I called trying to confirm that this ID was "mine" I was able to provide one of two security clearance pieces of data, but not enough information to get the support person to straighten things out for me. I ended up creating "yet another" ID just to get clear of the mess.
I made a suggestion to one of the folks I spoke with that an improvement to the functionality of apple ID's would be to support "consolidation" of accounts so that if several different Apple devices had been registered with different ID's and they all belonged to the same user(s) that a "common ID" could be created.
I'm reluctant to post apple ID's in a public support forum, and would prefer to deal with this by private email.  or phone.

    Then contact Apple directly.
This is a user to user technical support forum.  No one here has access to manage Apple ID's other than their own.
There is no Apple presence here.

  • Acrobat Pro Ext 9 always crashes, error 147:6 (I'm traveling & need help!)

I installed (from CDROM) and activated Acrobat Pro 9 Extended a week or so ago on my laptop, Windows XP Pro. I used it several times without any problem. I left my home yesterday on a one month trip, mostly out of the US but in the US until tomorrow. So now it crashes.
I tried to Print to PDF yesterday from another program. Acrobat started to open then crashed. If I open it by itself, as soon as I try to do anything, even just Help/About Acrobat, it crashes with a message:
'You cannot use ... Repair by uninstalling or reinstalling .... 147:6 "
Even if I just open it and wait, within a little while it will crash. I've attached a screen copy of the exact image.
I don't travel with original cdroms, so I cannot simply uninstall and reinstall. Is there anything I can do or am I SOL?
    Thanks.

I hope you get all your money back promptly! How frustrating.
If the seller was selling the software as new, that was probably just a scam or his source was unreliable.
For purchasing used software, it's possible the seller did not realize that the Acrobat had to be deactivated first. You could request verification of the deactivation prior to purchasing used software. That would at least allow you to make sure the seller understands that deactivation is necessary. The license is good for two computers and if it is installed on two computers, each installation would need deactivation, otherwise the buyer would be sharing a license and breaking the license agreement.
As for why the program ran for a bit, maybe there was temporarily one activation available for that serial number. The error message makes sense because a missing or corrupted serial number file would be replaced during reinstallation and reactivation.

  • Lacie external drive time machine error

I'm using my Lacie external drive (2TB) for my time machine. And it has this problem that every time after I put my macbook to sleep, the time machine won't work, it keeps showing this message "error occurred during back up" (but it doesn't not specify what kind of error). And the time machine can't recognize the history backup from the drive.
However, it will function again if I eject the drive and replug it in.
It's not a major problem, but it's kinda annoying and I wanna know what's causing it.
    Thanks yall.

    Hi George,
The one way I found to get the TM back on the rail is to access my back up disk from finder, choose the sparse disk image. Hit cmmd-delete and banish it.
Start over again. Be sure to be connected by a wired connection as on a wireless network it will take a while. But I guess you have the HD attached via firewire or usb so it should not be a major issue.

    Regards,

See logical corruption is normally termed as the internal inconsistancy within the block which is not caused by Oracle but by the user.So if you find internal inconsistancy than the best option is to look at the user and ask him to get the values sorted out.If the internal inconsistancy is some thig like index fragmentation sort of things or index entry pointing to a null rowid than they are termed as the logical corruption and they should not impact your normal as he data is already there and there is no issue in reading the block as such.
The term "corrupted blocks" I would call both in the tables and backup for those data blocks which are unreadable by Oracle which actualy is Physical corruption.
If i am doing the checking at 2:00 am, does it take more than two hours.I didnt understand this.
what can we do for Physical corruptionThis will need the block to be recovered with the Block Recover command of RMAN and a good backup.Read about it here,

  • Restoring corrupted files in Premiere due to unknown error

Got a big problem. I had a project open in Premiere and everything was fine. While doing something else leaving the job on the screen, it "lost" the harddrive, so the whole thing was still on screen but not online anymore. So I restarted the pc and the harddrive was back. But I could not open the file again because some unknown error orrured. i can not go back to the previous one as Premiere apparently did not leave any backup file for some reason. I still have another version of it, but of course work from the last week is all gone including a lot of refinement and one of the cameras is still not in sync. Is there any expert out there that might find the corrupted codes in a file ... not sure if there is anybody able to find stuff like that.
    Regards
    Ronnie

ronniemehlis, could you specify the product name and version? Is it Premiere Pro or Premiere Elements? If so, which version and on which operating system?

  • LaCie ext drives not starting up on boot

I have 4 LaCie drives that do not automatically turn on mount when I power up my tower:
    2TB LaCie BIGGER U2&F4&F8 EXTR 7200RPM 16MB US
    Big Disk
    d2 Hard Drives
When I have connected my older 17" PowerBook, the drives start up on boot and turn off at shutdown as they should. This action also occurred successfully on my previous G5 tower running Tiger. This is not occurring on my current G5 tower (Mac Pro).
Both systems are running Leopard, but the 17" PB is NOT the Intel processor like the tower.
All firmware has been updated on the external drives per LaCie's instructions, and they are now suggesting I turn this issue over to Apple to figure out.
The drives work fine, and I can turn them on manually when I boot the machine, but I just want my automatic turn on and turn off back.
    Suggestions?

Ok here's the output after a fresh boot.

  • Vista - Several problems! 1-Corrupt default search provider; 2-Viewing files errors; and 3-BlueScreen error

I've got Windows Vista and can't download I.E. 10 (as someone in a previous question said solved their problem) I, too, get the message, "A program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider setting for I.E. I.E. reset to original provider
Google and will now open search settings..." Whenever I get to the search menu, addons/toolbars - the Google application is not verified and the "Top Search Results" is not available. I've tried checking the box "Prevent search providers
    from..." but that doesn't help.
I've also encountered another problem that started 6 months ago, where if I try to read a report (specifically docket files through the county judicial portal) I get a blank page. Prior to this I was able to view all dockets. Don't know why!
And, last but not least! I just checked "troubleshooting problems" and see there was a device driver problem found from 5/10/14. Information is as follows:
    Problem Signature
    Probem Event Name:     BlueScreen
    OS Version:                  6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
    Locale ID:                     1033
Files that help describe the problem (some files may no longer be available)
    Mini051014-01.dmp
    sysdata.xml
    Version.txt
    Extra information about the problem:

    BCP3:       88C57B10

    Server Information:   2b09da0c-fc9e-4f58-9186-7ac2a9278961
I hope you can help with any/or all of these issues. I always thought I knew my way around the computer but I cannot get these issues resolved.
    Please Help!! Thanks!

    Hi,
In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
    2. Copy any and all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
    3. Upload the zip containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Prefered sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers.
4 (optional): The type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference
between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains
much more information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best
choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps are much larger in size due to containing much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUp Utilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon use.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type %systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all
    drives'.
    3. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system
    log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than
Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.
If you cannot get into normal mode to do any of this, please do this via Safe Mode.
    Regards,
    Patrick

  • How do I fix a corrupted admin account? I get an error when I attempt to log in.

There was a shut down due to a power failure. When the mac started again, it did not show my Home folder, which is on an external drive. The desktop was not correct and everything looks sort of generic, rather than reflecting my preferences.
I use the Advanced Options in the user accounts to reset my home folder, although it seemed to show the correct location for it. When I changed it, the locations was shown as externaldisc1 rather than externaldisk, which I thought was the correct name (not the real names). I used disk utility to check name of the external disk and it should the volume as externadisk1, so I went ahead and made the change.
Now I cannot login. I get an message that says Cannot log in at this time because an error occurred.
I have two drives that I can use as a startup. The internal drive is running 10.9. This is the one that has the problem. I can still login if I startup from the external drive, which is running 10.8, as can be seen below, and is the disk on which the Home Folder is located.

Well, if it were me, I'd try a couple of other things first:
    - Force a reset of the admin password
As before, boot into Recovery HD
From the menu, choose Utilities, Terminal
Type "resetpassword" (without the quotes) and hit enter
    Select the Macintosh HD volume
Select your account from the list and give it a new password, click Save
    Restart normally and test
    - Reset your Home directory permissions
Do steps 1-5 above, choosing yet another password
    Also click "Reset"
    Restart normally and test
I Believe in trying things that to from the least potential harm to the greatest   if these don't work, please reply back.
My next choice would be to do a restore from time machine from a point before you had this trouble (you do have backups?) and, in the absence of advice from more experienced community members, you could try the linked article, bearing in mind that a full erase and reinstall might be needed.
