Corrupt Administrator Password?
When I try and log into my MacBook (which uses Snow Leopard), the computer 'shakes its head'. Here's the rest of the story....
I recently installed a new hard drive and restored my backup from Time Machine. I have two users on my system. I now cannot log into my administrator account but can log into the 'guest' account.
I have tried every possible account combination I have used (there haven't actually been many - 3 in total) that I have used on this MacBook before. I have also run Disk Utility on the new hard drive that I have restored but it continues to have disk permission errors that it keeps repairing. It doesn't seem to 'zero' the number of disk errors, even though I have run it 3 times.
How can I fix this problem and log into my administrator account? or do I have to create a new one and restore my backup manually from Time Machine? The key data I want to restore are my documents and iTunes files; the rest of the 'stuff' (eg. settings) I can set up myself manually.

I can't answer you directly, but I can tell you:
1. Account passwords aren't stored in a keychain, they're in NetInfo.
2. The FileVault master password is in /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.cer and FileVaultMaster.keychain
3. If you delete the files in (2) you can still access FileVault images, all you've lost is the master backdoor to them.

If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
3. Click the "First Aid" tab
4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
5. Close the Preferences window
6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
7. Enter your username and password
8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"

Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:

After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.

Hi, I have version 10.6.8 and i forgot my administrator password. I have read all forums, tried restart cmd+ r, nothing happens. Tried option key on restart an image of a disk appreas(only one, no such thing as a recovery disk ) i click on it it brings me normally to my desktop, i.e nothing happened. In administrator section, there's no forgot password link. please help

After changing the default Administrator Password in the RPD, I ran the Cryptotools utility for both BI publisher and BI Scheduler to make sure that the BI Presentation services can identify the CredentialStore.
There is another xml file, xmlp-server-config.xml in the OracleBIData\xmlp\xmp\admin\configuration folder, which has a property name "BI_SERVER_SECURITY_ADMIN_PASSWORD with its value being the default password for Administrator. The password here is in clear text, not encrypted. Is this how it's supposed to be?
I do not see anywhere in the Docs. where there's an encryption procedure for this file.
I certainly do not want to have this file with the password in clear text.
Has anyone encountered this issue?

I recently bought a used macbook pro. I can pretty much do everything I need on it until I want to change setting and such things. Then it asks me for an administrator password which I do not know or have. On top of that I do not have the OS disc either. Is there a way I can SAFELY reset or delete the password so I can set my own without the possibility of screwing thing up. LIke I said I can do most anything. I figured this out when attempting to tether it to my smartphone for internet access (I do all the time from my desktop but my desktop is a PC so things are a little different) I am a very new mac user, I have always been a devoted PC user until now. I have to say I am really loving my macbook pro I may just stick with mac from now on (if I can get this problem figured out without too much stress.

There actually is a slightly easier way in OS X 10.5 or greater.
1. Start up in single-user mode (hold Command-S as the computer starts up).
2. Type: mount -uw /
3. Press Return.
4. Type this:
passwd (user's short name)
Replace "(user's short name)" with the short name of the user account whose password you wish to reset. If you are not sure what the account name is, you can get a list of user names by typing: ls /Users
5. Press Return.
6. Enter a new user password.
7. Press Return.
8. Type: reboot
9. Press Return. -

I have an older version of iTunes on my office computer and it will not allow me to upgrade to the newer version without an administrative password. How can I get around this???

But if that is a MacBook (intel) you may be able to
