Corrupt backup: massive "other data", no music

As you can see in the image below, there is a sudden and massive increase at the "other data" (the yellow bar)
And at the same time, all my music is gone. I already tried to reinstall and to restore from a backup. During the backup process, everything looks fine, but the moment the sync is finished, this odd situation pops up again: the music is gone, and obviously in "vanished" into the "other data" part.
So, I presume, there is some kind of file corruption, but I have no idea how to proceed now.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

No, the music is not on the iPhone, and when I check "usage", it says "music: 0". But at the same time, the iPhone usage says "20GB used" - although there is nothing as big (as apps or whatever).
And yes, I tried already: resetting, relaunching, reconnecting, both the iPhone and the MacBook

  • What is "Other" data in iTunes for my iPhone?  And why is it over a GB?

In iTunes, my iPhone reports I have 1.6GB of "Other" data. It appeared immediately after I deleted and unsubscribed from a podcast (via iTunes) which had 24 large videos, and then sync'd with my iPhone (which was running out of space).
The podcasts appeared to be removed from my iPhone, however I still had no space and I saw that now I had this 1.6GB of other stuff.
I had a look around for answers on this and the default answer given is "restore your iPhone". So I did a backup and then did a restore to that backup. I don't have an earlier backup (except one that's from last year) and I really don't want to lose my app data and settings.
The restore didn't remove the 1.6GB of data.
So the question is, am I right in assuming the 1.6GB of other data is the left over podcasts that are now corrupt somehow? Or is it something else? i.e. What constitutes "other" data?
Second, any other ideas how to get rid of that other data?
    Thank

Other that large is corrupt data. Normally, a restore from backup fixes things.
So, I discovered something new about iTunes today. The "Restore from backup" context menu option that appears when you click your iOS device in the Devices tree on the left of iTunes, is different from the "Restore" button that you get on the Summary tab for your device.
"Restore from backup" just does an restore from backup. Whereas the Restore button does a restore and then restore from backup. Make sense? Hmm.
This distinctly different functionality is not clear to the user, indeed the advice I was given above was to "Restore from backup", which in this instance is not what is needed to clear out the "Other" data.
In summary, to fix my problem I:
    - performed a complete Backup (from iOS Device context menu)
    - performed a Restore (clicked Restore button on Summary tab)
    - after device is reset with latest iOS software, chose latest backup
My other data shrank to 0.2Gb, and as an added bonus another 1.4 GB of other space was freed up from Apps and Video, even though I can't find anything missing, so I suspect there was other non-"Other" data that was cleared out by this procedure.

  • How I backup my iPad data on iCloud ?

    Hello
Please help me how I backup my iPad data ( apps, music, contact, image and others ) on icloud?

    Settings>iCloud>Storage&Backup.  Turn on iCloud Backup.
When it comes to pictures, always sync them to a computer for archiving.  Never leave it to iCloud, as many users have lost photos during restores from backups.

  • Other data is taking up massive memory

    iPhone 6, iOS 8.1
I've been having ongoing problems with 'other' data blocking up my 128GB iPhone6. Not just small bits but 50, 60 sometimes 70GB of it. This even appears on an iPhone with no videos, no browsing, no email accounts, no photos and no apps installed, and just about 30GB of music. Do a complete fresh restore, put some music on it, fine, sync it with iTunes again and a massive block of 'other' data appears again. Tried it as a completely new phone as well as restoring from a backup but no difference.
iOS8, iTunes and Yosemite all completely up to date.
Any hints? Getting rid of it isn't the only problem as it just comes back again within a day or two.

Just a small problem, a suggestion elsewhere was to remove the iTunes library and let it reimport everything from scratch in case it was the library which was corrupted, letting it manage the folders as well. That means all 17,000ish tracks are showing as imported in the same day and in Finder all the folder dates are new as well. Don't suppose anyone knows of any other ways of identifying corrupt or just recent files?

  • Corrupted backup.  Unable to recover photos, texts, app data, etc.

I recently updated to iTunes 10.5.  Prior to doing this I backed up my iPhone 4 but it said the backup was corrupt.  I figured that I could still proceed since I backed up a few days ago.  However, I was wrong.  When I tried to restore my phone after the update it said the restore points were not found.  I was forced to set up my phone as a new device.  Is there any way to restore photos and other data that was on my phone prior to the update or are they lost forever?
Thank you in advance for any help.

    Hi avalo995,
There is no way to remove all data bar the app data when restoring the official iPhone & iOS, if this data is stored then it is held in the backup file and restoring from the backup file will return all the data onto the phone.
As for the text messages, you can take screenshots of the texts (via holding home button and then clicking the sleep/wake button) and export them off the iPhone onto a computer where they can be synced back as pictures in the future.
The backup file can be moved from one system to another by copying it from the original backup location and pasting it into the correct location on the other computer. The backup file location can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
    Hope it helps.

  • Corrupt backups & deleted music

    greetings, forum newbie here :P
Recently, I gave my mother an ipod touch (4th gen), to take with her on vacation.
we had some trouble after we bought it.
Mostly we had to keep restoring it to factory settings because my computer wouldnt recognise it anymore, or it would go into recovery mode without warning
It also kept removing any music from the playlist (it kept the files, they just couldnt be accessed).
I brought it back to the store a few times, but all they were able to do was restore it, same as I did at home.
After we got it working again, I reloaded the deleted music, my mom left on vacation, and came back after a few weeks.
It appears that just after she left, the music was removed again, but there were no other problems during the time she was gone.
When I connected the ipod to my computer again, the ipod began updating, and had to be restored to factory settings.
when i then tried to restore from backup, Itunes told me the backup file was corrupt. I tried with other, earlier backup files, they were corrupt as well.
Can anyone tell me what is up with this Ipod, and maybe what to do about it?
also, is there anyway to recover my mom's vacation pictures from the " corrupt" backup file?
    thnx in advance
ps: the Itunes version is 10.1.0.54 , running on windows 7

It can't be deleted or hidden.
Use the Spotlight search and verify that it is on the iPod. It would appear that you moved it to somewhere where you can't find it.
You can reset the screen layout by going to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Screen Layout.

    Hey there,
Are you manually managing your Music or using your iPod as a storage drive?
I would try using Disk Utility to reformat the iPod and then restore it in iTunes and have your iPod set to automatically sync and see if that helps.

Apps (like other synced media like music) are not included in the backup that iTunes makes. Thus, restoring from backup if the apps are not in the iTunes library there are no apps to restore to the iPod.
Redownload the apps into your iTunes library.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    And then restore from backup.
Make sure that in iTunes>Preferences>Devices the box that say "Prevent iPods..." is checked otherwise when you connect the iPod to the computer the previous backup (with your app data) might be overwritten.

  • How can I transfer sms data from a corrupted backup to my phone?

    Hello chaps,
I have an empty iphone, and two backups, from this morning and four months ago.
Restoring the backup from this morning gives the error 'corrupted or incompatible'. I have tried various solutions from forums, none of them work.
So instead I have restored sucesfully from the four month old backup. The ONLY thing I want from the new backup are my sms's.
How do I get these onto my phone?
I have already tried copying the sms file (3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28) from the NEW backup to the OLD backup and tried to restore that, however if I do this it throws the corrupted message.
I have read this file using sql readers, it has all my texts in wonderful glory, I just WANT THEM ON MY PHONE!
    How!?

For a start- Im very suspicious of the corrupted mesage in the first place, I have had previous experiences of this message where restarting etc has resolved the issue, implying that there isnt really anything courrupted, its some bug with itunes or the iphone.
Secondly, even if it is genuinely corrupted, it would seem unlikely that every single file within the backup is corrupted. I only want to retrieve the 30mb sms file. And I can open and browse this file from the corrupted backup just fine using third party software.

  • Time Capsule best to dedicate for backup and usb external for other data or partition TC for dual

I have lots of video and photo and have 2TB drive on my iMAC and want to use TC for backup.
    1) Since alot of video and photo, can plug in via ethernet or "cable/usb" vs. wireless to back up my main iMAC?  Otherwise very slow via wireless and perhaps better to get Seagate Go Flex or WD and go Firewire right?
    2) I do need and like to share other data shared vs. just TC to Time Machine Backup, reading this community input, can I confirm that best practice is to let TC have as much dedicated space as possible for Backup and mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC?
    Here's my use case:
    1) Time Machine tied to TC for the 2TB via wired to main machine iMAC - I only have this 1 iMAC.
    2) Like to share data with iPhone and iPAD some pictures, etc...  so do this with USB port and see data on the shared drive via iPhone and iPAD - no need to backup - just viewing - but need wireless - how does iPhone and iPAD detect this device - do I need app or something to view shared drive stuff?
    3) Like to share and light backup for couple PC Win7 laptops just to get files back and forth or share things between family member - nothing intense - but can PC win7 laptops see the shared drive via IP setup or something like that?
Sorry for multi questions - my first iMAC so still stumbling around to see what works best for me.
    Thanks,

If I understand your question, depending on the signal strength, backing up over Wi-Fi can be rather slow.  An Ethernet connection would be much faster, particularly for the first backup, which will the the largest.  Backing up to a locally-connected disk will be faster still.

I'm not sure what you mean by "mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC".  It's not recommended to share the same volume for Time Machine output and other things.
need wireless - how does iPhone and iPAD detect this device - do I need app or something to view shared drive stuff?
If you mean that you need wireless to give an iPhone or iPad access to the Internet, a Time Capsule would do that.  If you want to give those devices access to content on a Time Capsule, that's still an immature technology, although things may improve with iOS 5 or updates beyond that.
    3) Like to share and light backup for couple PC Win7 laptops just to get files back and forth or share things between family member - nothing intense - but can PC win7 laptops see the shared drive via IP setup or something like that?
A WIn7 computer will be able to see files on the drive(s) of a Time Capsule.  I haven't tried that, but instructions are available.

Once you are in Recovery Mode, it's too late to do any backup. I am afraid you are going to lose your data.

  • Music is syncing as 'other' data and isn't accessible on iPhone

    Hi,
Basically, I was having problem with my phone so I took it to an Apple store and they restored it.
After restoring the back up onto the phone, over half of my music has synced onto the iPhone as 'other' data and does not appear in the music app.

It can't be. They all play fine on my laptop, and before taking it to the Apple store, they all synced onto the phone fine.

  • I restored my ipod and i now have 35.66GB of other data on my ipod and it only sinked my music that i bought on itunes how do i fix this?

I restored my ipod and i now have 35.66GB of other data on my ipod and it only sinked my music that i bought on itunes how do i fix this? i have an ipod 5 with ios 7.1.2. ive tried restarting my computer restarting my ipod and restoring it. i also tried to delete apps nothing works.

This happened to me with the same device. I wouldn't worry about having it just say other as that is just information, if you really need to know what is using the most of your device's storage to to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage and that will tell you what apps are using in terms of your storage. Besides that, "other" is just iTunes knowing that there is information, how much there is, just not what it is. So syncing your device a few times and letting it stay plugged in should allow iTunes to recognize what information is on your iPod. Hope I could help!
