Corrupt backupd plist files
I'm having problems with Time Machine (it's backing up every interval, even when I have it set to "off") and it looks like some of my /System/Library/LaunchDaemon/com.apple.backupd*.plist files are corrupted. I've done some research and others have said that these files will not be recreated if I delete them, which begs the question of how I can get a default set of plist files for Time Machine. I'm really hoping I don't have to completely reinstall the OS.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
-Nate
Did you use Time Machine Editor or a similar product to alter Time Machine's built-in schedule? If so, that's likely the cause. Those apps alter files that Time Machine doesn't want or expect to be altered, so it's still doing the last thing it was told.
If so, use the same app to set Time Machine back to the defaults (hourly backups, auto backups, backup upon disc connection, etc). If you no longer have the app, reinstall it.
Then you should be able to manage Time Machine from the preferences window.
As a last resort, your best bet will be to reinstall OSX (that doesn't affect anything else), then download and install the "combo" update, per Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.

.plist are created by an application. Whenever I find that an application is acting strange: I restart, if that doesn't fix it I drag the .plist to my desk top and reopen the application and the application replaces it. I've never had a problem with disk utility which is an Apple application that is especially designed for the Mac. I would ignore the .plist warning unless all those applications fail to work properly. I have an old application that behaves erratically regularly and I restart to fix it; when restart doesn't work I remove the .plist and it runs OK again. One mistake I heard that some people don't turn off their Macs: What is the first thing that is suggested to fix the Mac when something doesn't work properly-Restart or Shut Down. I have very few problems with my old G4 because I shut it down when its not in use and OS 10.4.11 puts everything back in order at restart.

What would cause some plist files to get corrupted? I had to replace the Info.plist file for the "Software Update" CoreService from another machine. The Property Editor application could not open the file. "Sofware Update" would close immediately after being launched.
The same thing happened to System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices/Frameworks ...
ColorSync.Framework/A/Resources/Info.plist. which cause MS Word and Adobe Photoshop to fail to open.
G4 iBook Mac OS X (10.4.6)"What would cause some plist files to get corrupted?"
There is a vast array of things that can cause corruption in a plist file or your system for that matter. Brownouts, power spikes, improper shutdowns, hard drive beginning to fail, disk directory corruption, poorly written installers, the computer gods are mad at you, and more.
The best way to try and eliminate issues that can lead to corruption is to do some basic maintenance on your computer now and then. Take a look here for some great advice on maintenance:

124 pages of corrupted .plist files for Pages/Numbers
Computer has been very slow and Pages/Numbers will not allow trashed files to be deleted unless the program is open. Least of my concerns. Just ran Disk Warrior and did a file check and got 124 pages of nothing but corrupted .plist files for Pages and Numbers. All references to files look like this, with very slight variations (can't post 124 pages here):
(hard drive)/com.apple.documentVersions/
3C712EC1-735C-406C-9BE6-D1D4A1ADD5B8.pages/Metadata/
All of the errors are in com.apple.documentVersions.
Not at ease with deleting all of these .plist files, but these corrupted files are really affecting iMac's performance. iWork updates have been through App Store, don't have original disk to reinstall. What to do?Sometimes, DiskWarrior simply doesn't know what certain files are, or what to do with them, and tells you they are corrupt. What I would have expected it to find is (hard drive)/.DocumentRevisions-V100 folder, and not what you posted, which has never existed on my OS X machines with Pages/Numbers of any version.
Presumeably, and before you ran DiskWarrior, you booted into Recovery mode and performed 1) verify/repair permissions, 2) verify Disk, and 3) a Safe Boot mode procedure.
I have not updated Disk Warrior for Mavericks compatibility yet. The only time I have used it, was to rebuild the File Directory Structure database, and then only after that database shows over 10% fragmentation. This isn't often.
There are a number of reasons your machine may be slow. See if it has improved after Disk Utility and a Safe Boot. If it continues to be sluggish, you should repost in the Mavericks Discussions within Mac OS & System Software community. This will get more eyes on your performance issues.
You may wish to ensure that you have a good backup of important data too. -
Fixing corrupt .plist files
I'm wondering if anybody has figured this out yet:
Mavericks does some different things with .plist files, and the traditional fix of trashing the .plist that is in ~/Library/Preferences no longer works for fixing a corrupt .plist.
The .plist files are now cached, perhaps in ~/Library/Caches.
I found this page that addresses the issue: objective c - Deleting plist file does not reset app on Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks - Stack Overflow
Out of my own curiosity I tried trashing a .plist file from ~/Library/Preferences and then force quitting the cfprefsd process (mine, not root's), and then restarting, but the .plist file was not regenerated. It remained absent from ~/Library/Preferences. So I restored it from the trash.
Has anyone figured this out? It's a very good question regarding plists generally. You may have seen Apple's mention of it, although the caching seems much more agressive in Mavericks, & eg Safari requires quitting cfprefsd, or a restart (logging out/in isn't enough) for removing/replacing the plist file to have any effect, here anyway.
In 10.8 and later, the CFPreferences agent process (cfprefsd) will cache information from these files and asynchronously write to them. This means that directly modifying plist files is unlikely to have the expected results (new settings will not necessarily be read, and may even be overwritten). You should use the NSUserDefaults or CFPreferences APIs, or the defaults(1) command, to interact with the preferences system. -
IPhoto plist file corrupting hard drive
I was having trouble with Time Machine accessing an external HD and discovered that bad iphoto plist files were breaking the directory.
I ran DiskWarrior and discovered that the property list data on the drive "was damaged and could not be repaired." So I dumped all that data to another external HD, wiped the drive clean and started over with an empty disk and a new Time Machine file.
That worked for about 24 hours (TIme Machine did multiple automatic backups successfully). Today I get the same failure notice from Time Machine. Ran DiskWarrior again to find multiple identical Property List errors. Here are the details:
File: "com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist:"
Detected that Property List data is damaged and cannot be repaired.
XML parser error:
Unexpected character at line 1
Old-style plist parser error:
Unexpected character '0x4' at line 1
Location:"Silver/backups.backupdb/myname PowerBookG4 12"/2008-04-24-192320/Macintosh HD/Users/myname/Library/Preferences/"
I'm runnining iLife 08' and all software is up to date.
Any ideas?Switching off the iPhoto screen saver and trashing its plist file stopped the directory corruption issue. Even so, backups would not work.
Thinking it might be a WD issue, I went to the Western Digital support site and found a firmware update (designed to eliminate hardware ID conflicts when running two WD external HDs) and a newer "drive manager" (formerly called button manager). Installing the firmware update on my backup destination and the drive manager software seems to have eliminated the problem. I've been backing up over the hub successfully for almost 24 hours. Cross your fingers. -
Command-Tab App Switcher doesn't work (related to corrupt .plist file error?)
Hi folks,
The other day, Drive Genius 4 reported on a file corruption: ~/Library/Preferences/System Mac.plist file. I tried to find the file but it didn't appear to exist.
Today, a strange phenomenon occurred which I think may be related. Strangest thing. I was using Safari, had several tabs open when, suddenly, I lost all input to any links in Safari and system wide as well, other than the cursor being able to move around the display. This dysfunction also included the Command-Tab App Switcher, though they keyboard text function still worked. I could enter text in fields.
I tried Force Quit Apps but I had to shutdown and reboot using the Power button. The reboot seemed to remedy the situation and most controls and keyboard functions returned except for the Command-Tab App Switcher.
In Safari, I used History/Restore Last Open Page, and when the searched for pages came up, they were blank - I was informed that there was no internet connection. Wi-Fi showed still on but grayed out, which could be logical. Also, this is when I noticed that the key repeat function wasn’t working. In System Prefs, I did manage to change the key repeat rate, which accelerates the backspace erase function but there is no key repeat, itself.
All of this, of course, might be pointing to that system file error. Whether it is that hidden Mac.plist file corruption I don’t know.
In any event, first thing I did was to run Permissions Repair. At one point, about 2/3rds of the way in, the progress bar hung for a few minutes and then finished the last third in a split second. In the Repair Permissions log there was no /Mac.plist file among those repaired.
Additionally in Sys Prefs, I tested for Tab key response by refocusing the radio buttons in the Full Keyboard Access option under Keyboard/Shortcuts panel from "Text boxes and lists only" to "All controls.” The refocus worked because now pressing Tab does move the cursor through every control. But still no Command-Tab App Switcher. In Spotlight, I did find the App Switcher.app but it would not open, because it is “Damaged or Missing.” App Switcher preferences are also not accessible.
In Terminal I changed directories and do see the /Mac.plist file under discussion. I suppose I could -rm the file but I’m reluctant without knowing more about what other anomalies might result. The App Switcher is one of the Mac’s best utilities (thanks to er, Microsoft.) If the /Mac.plist file will refresh from the current status, no problem, I would think.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any suggestions? Thanks a whole lot in advance for your time and consideration in this!
All best,
DavidFirst, get rid of the worthless, time-wasting "Drive Genius" according to its developer's instructions. Never install any so-called "utility" again.
Don't waste time repairing permissions again, either, unless you have an indication of a permission error involving system files, which you don't and probably never will.
Never delete any file in the shell (Terminal) for any reason.
There is no built-in application called "App Switcher." There is no built-in file named "System Mac.plist" either.
If command-tab application switching still doesn't work after you get rid of "Drive Genius," see below.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
User profile corrupt-ish after mass deletion of ".plist" files
Here's my problem:
I had two sequential hard locks due to World of Warcraft on my Macbook Pro. After the second reboot, certain applications in the iLife suite (notably iCal and Safari) and certain 3rd party applications (such as Newsfire) would crash a few seconds after opening with an "application crashed unexpectedly" error. Note that these applications seem to respond and work fine for 3-5 seconds after launching, then crash inexplicably.
Being a mac noob and misreading technical help, I proceeded to delete all of the .plist files from my user>library>preferences folder. The only thing this succeeded in doing is reducing my profile back to its "factory" state, loosing all system settings and preferences. Oops.
I have verified/repaired my disk and permissions through Disk Utility and used Cocktail to clear my caches to no avail.
Now, I would just trash this user profile for another but I have no decent way to backup my iLife content and would like to avoid having to trudge down that path if at all possible.
I've browsed these forums for a solution, but so far fruitlessly. I'm working on a dissertation for school and desperately need a stable system to work on, so any help you guys could provide would be immensely valuable. Thanks! The solution was to rename my Library folder to "Library.old" -- not optimal, but it fixed the problem.

Can no longer read plist files
I've got a script that iterates through a list of hostnames, connects to each host, looks for the existence of a list of applications, and if they exist reads their Info.plist for the version. This worked seamlessly until a couple of days ago. The only change I can think of is having changed my username on all of my Macs from <username> to <username>.sa to differentiate privileged accounts from unprivileged accounts. Yes, this caused a number of issues, and I've hunted them down. I can connect to every host with <username>.sa, perform actions with sudo, etc. What I can't do any more is read plist files, even when logged in locally:

Hi
Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash. iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
com.apple.iMovie.plist
com.apple.iMovie3.plist
com.apple.iMovie7.plist
com.apple.iMovie8.plist
com.apple.iMovie9.plist
com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
and find
com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
• go up to Apple Menu
• Down to System Pref's
• Select Accounts - Create a new User
• Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
• Log into as the new User
Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.
• Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
• Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)

ICal won't open and missing .plist file
My iCal keeps crashing unexpectedly. Admittedly I dont use it much from my desktop computer but primarily from my iphone and ipad so I can't trace the problem to a specific time other than I haven't been able to open for a few days. When I go to open, a dialog box opens saying "Upgrading iCal" and then crashes.
I looked at the other posts refering to this problem and the common culprit seems to be a corrupted plist file. When I attempted to follow the the procedure to drag the current com.apple.ical.plist file to the desktop I discovered there was no file of that name residing anywhere I my computer. What next?
Here is the crash message:

How do you find out what application is generating a plist file in your preference folder?
I have had two similar warnings come up in Drive Genius 3, a program that I use to manage my drives. The warnings occur during a daily verification of preferences on my main drive, a 256GB SSD.
They state:
"The preference file at '/Users/me/Library/Preferences/com.analogsolutions.Football.plist' may be corrupted."
"The preference file at '/Users/me/Library/Preferences/org.machinedevelop.National.plist' may be corrupted."
Per Drive Genius' advisement, "Corrupted files can cause appplication crashes and should be moved to the Trash." I delete the files, however they are regenerated each day.
Q: How do you figure out what application is generating a preference file? And is there a way to tell if this is a OS generated preference file?
I have searched online and cannot find any information about either Analog Solutions or Machine Develop nor am I able to discern what these particular .plist files are for...
Q: Are these two .plist files truly potentially harmful?
Thanks for the Help!

8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3Hi Everyone, sorry for the late response. I have been monitoring my Preferences Folder; every moment I am on my computer trying to catch what application/process generates these files. I was hoping to try your suggestions, but oddly enough the offensive .plist files have not returned since the last time I deleted them about a week ago.... strange...
In any case, I have responded to some of your suggestions and questions that I have information on:
X423424X wrote: Ok, can you double click the .plist file? If so it should attempt to launch the Property List Editor (in your Utilities folder). That way you can look at stuff in the plist. Maybe (hopefully) there's something in there that can shed some light on who is creating it. If Property List Editor cannot open the file (some apps create files that have the .plist extension but don't actually create the proper XML format -- probably what ProSoft was alluding to) then try opening it with a text editor.
The .plist file when opened in text editor contains a string of (what to me seems to be) an arbitrary list of numbers.
Linc Davis wrote: Those files have been given obfuscated names so you won't know what created them. They must contain encrypted registration data for some third-party commercial software that you use.
Yes, seems likely...
Linc Davis wrote: It should be fairly easy to find out what application is creating them, if you really care. Move the files to the Desktop, then log out. Log back in while holding the shift key as you click the "Log In" button. That will prevent your login items from loading, among other things. Open your account preferences and launch the login items one at a time by double-clicking them in the list. After each one, check to see whether the files have been recreated.
Ran through login, one by one, no luck in identifying the application(s).
X423424X wrote: Another thought, lock the plists on the hope that whatever is using them will "choke" and complain about it (no guarantee that will work but worth a try).
Thanks, the lock idea is the one I will try next if they ever reappear...
X423424X wrote: Also, I don't recall if I asked this but if those plists are deleted while logged in will they be recreated during that same login session. Or do they only appear after you deleted them and then and then logged out and back in? Or do you have to reboot to recreate them?
Unfortunately I do not know for certain. Though from all my login/startup/reboot tests I believe that they are not directly linked to starting up the machine or loging in either.
I'm not really certain why the .plist have not returned. I haven't uninstalled any programs, though I did run a couple updates for some widgets within the last week; however that was about 3 days after I deleted the last set of .plist files and usually they reappered everyday. In any case, given that they have not been regenerated I guess my problem is solved per se, at least I am no longer getting that annoying warning everyday. Still, it's a bit of a mystery
Thanks again for all the help! -
All plist files are not being pushed out
Current setup : 10.6 Server ( updated to 10.6.8 )
About 10 to 15 client machines ( 10 Desktops and 5 laptops )
These client machines are being managed in a group already for Software Updates from the server and hence already have the managed preferences folder on each machine.
I have just created a new com.apple.print.custompapers.plist file and have added it to the Preference Editor for that group and have set it to 'Often'. ( WorkGroup Manager -> Computer Group -> Preferences -> Details )
But after repeated attempts, I am still not able to push out this plist file to the client machines. I have tried the following already :
1. Deleting the Managed Preferences folder from each machine. Result : It recreates the folder again, but again with only the Software update plist file.
2. I have tried setting the plist to 'Always' from the 'Once, Often, Always' selection in the Preferences Editor. Result: Same result as above.
3. I have tried adding the file manually to Managed Preferences. Result : The file is removed at the next login, and cannot be used before that.
All clients are running on 10.6.8.
If you require any more information, please specify and I'll provide it. Thank you for looking over the problem and giving it thought.
Hope to hear from someone with a possible resolution soon.
Thanks.
Prat.Have you tried setting another, pre-made preference in the computer group settings to see if it applies?
Have you run plutil /path/to/plist in the command line to see if it is OK (can't see why this would matter, this is a stab in the dark)?
P.S.
I have found that OpenDirectory can be quirky. I have found it become corrupt but still mostly functional quite quickly after setup. Since Apple has not well documented this software and offers no directory maintenance tools, every year I end up having to rebuild the server from scratch. I know this is not very helpful, but strange, unpredictable, and unbecoming behavior seems to be more frequent than I prefer. (Thankfully setting up an OS X Server is a veritable breeze compared to Microsoft Server Products). -
Disk Warrior reports corrupt plist files that may cause system instability. This is one entry:
File: "BuildVersionHistory.plist"!
Detected that Property List data is damaged and cannot be repaired.!

My questions are:
1. Do I need to delete these?
2. If so, how do I do it?Sure wish someone would address this, the question is in numerous places in Support. For anyone who has this problem, please submit bug report to Apple Feedback.
