Corrupt book in iPhoto: Weird '!' instead of pictures

I'm new to iPhoto and didn't know about starting iPhoto with the 'option' key pressed in order to get it to prompt to "create a new library". Instead, I just renamed my "iPhoto Library" folder by adding a "2" to the end. Then when I started iPhoto, I got the "create a new library" prompt (which I did). This resulted in a new folder "Party Library" (which I entered) inside my Pictures folder.
Next, I imported a bunch of photos and made a "book". This was quite a party and I was taking lots of pictures. At numerous times that evening, I would copy all the photos from the camera into iPhoto. I'd empty the camera each time and proceed to take more pictures. We were printing out the pictures to give to the guests so that is why I emptied the camera each time.
I made a nice 'book' with captions and was all set to send it to Apple for printing. I then carefully backuped the "Pictures Folder" onto a DVD just in case something went wrong.
When, I tried to transmit my book to Apple, that is when I had problems. It appears that the first step of renaming my "iPhoto Library" to create "Party Library" resulted in my identity getting messed up somehow. I'm not sure what an 'iLife' is but mine somehow got messed up. In any case, I couldn't successfully upload the book to Apple.
I went in an consulted with my Apple Genious who explained what went wrong. He helped me (I thought) by renaming my original library back to "iPhoto Library" and then showed me how to launch with the "option" key pressed. Now when I got the "choose library" prompt, I selected "Party Library". This is where things went bad...
Something happened to the book so that many of the pictures show up as a grey box with an '!' in the middle. Some of the pictures show up "just fine".
I can "get info" and get the JPG file name. From the finder when I search for that JPG name, I get lots of matches.
I don't know why but the pictures that are having problems have the same filename as other pictures in different folders in the "Party Folder". All the pictures that still display correctly DO NOT have such a name conflict.
Can someone explain why my camera named them the same? Eg: DSC_0003.JPG? Or was it something I did at this party as I loaded photos into iPhoto (and emptied the camera) many times... Or is it something that iPhoto did???
In any case, I think iPhoto got confused and doesn't know what picture to use. Could it have forgotten what folder the picture is in when there are duplicates in other folders? So, now all it can display is a '!' Weird.
In any case, does anyone have an idea on how I recover? I can find all the photos in the "Party Folder" but where does iPhoto store the book? Perhaps I can edit it (xml document per chance...) and patch-up the folder names... In any case, I can't find any files with a name like the name of my "book".
Another possible hint is I can move one of the problem photos (i.e. the '!') off the page and as I do, the '!' turns into a thumb-nail. So at least I can see what the picture was! I can park the 'thumb-nail' back into the photo bar (at the top of the work window). As I do this, that position in the page becomes 'available' for a new picture selection.
Now that I know what picture it is, I can delete it from the photo bar and go back to the Library and drag it back into the book. It then shows up again on the photo bar. Unfortunately, when I place it back onto the page, it still shows as a '!'
If anyone out there has any ideas, please respond!
Regards, Christine

The ! shows up because the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window has lost the connection to the file it represents. There are two main reasons why this occurs: database coruption and/or User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder - in this case your Party Library.
1. Hold down the abbpe and option keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild the database.
2. Have you renamed, altered or moved anything in the Party Library Folder?
As for the mulitple versions of photos: Your Party Library (or any Library) is arranged as follows:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
So each version of the Image has a distinct role to play. To distinguish them in a Spotlight search, use file size - the tiny ones are your thumbnails etc.
Your Camera names the files. Some Cameras have a setting which allows them to sequentially number across cards. You can also use titling in the iPhoto Window to distinguish them (Photos -> Batch Change) and some people copy the pics onto their machines first, rename them with a batch renamer and then import them into iPhoto.
The book is simply a virtual album of photos and is part of the library6.iPhoto file.
As to your plan of moving and patching things up... It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss. SO try rebuild the database first.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding."  Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.

  • How can I stop iPhoto from autosizing my pictures when I create a Book?

...I'm trying to create a Book in iPhoto and it keeps upsizing the pictures and cutting them off - cannot make them smaller to fit in all content

Probably the theme you are using does not support tit - try a different theme - as I said originally
Pre Crop to 4:3 (the frame ratio for books) or in most themes right click on the placed photo and select fit to frame to use background color film rather than cropping

  • Can i make a book in iPhoto without using any of the built in layout templates, which are too limiting when i have already cropped my pictures to show just what I want. Ideally I just want to drag and drop and arrange and size the pictures myself

If you have Pages you can create customs pages for your book as TD suggested. If you have Pages from iWork 09 or 11 this app will add 80 or so additional frames to those offered:  Frames and Strokes Installer. Don't use it on the latest Pages version, however.
This tutorial shows how to create a custom page with the theme's background: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book.  Once the page is complete to get it into iPhoto as a jpeg file follow these steps:
Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. For books to be printed choose 300 dpi.

  • I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggsts

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

Why do you think that? You can create printed Books in Aperture with similar themes as in iPhoto, and with more options to create custom themes on your own.
See this page - http://www.apple.com/aperture/what-is.html - scroll down to see the example books.
But if you prefer the iPhoto themes and layout, you can open your Aperture library in iPhoto, if you have both the current version of iPhoto and Aperture. Simply use the command "File > Open Library in iPhoto" and you can create your book in iPhoto.
And switch back to Aperture by using the command "File > Open Library in  Aperture".

  • How do I move my pictures from iphoto on my mac book to iphoto on my new Desktop?

I am not sure what how to transfer all my pictures from iphoto on my old mac book to my new desktop computer. Any help would be appreicated.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Export picture book from iPhoto 6 to iPhoto 11

    Hello,
I had created a picture book using the baby theme in iPhoto 6.  But since iPhoto 6 no longer supports the "buy the book" option, I will need to export the book to my Macbook Pro which is running iPhoto 11.  How can I do so, especially that the baby theme is not available in iPhoto 11 now.
    Many thanks!

You'll have to try a different theme that's available in iPhoto 11 - possibly Crayon

  • Printing iPhoto '06 books in iPhoto '08

I've got a small problem here. Over the past couple of years, I've made a few very important books in iPhoto--wedding and honeymoon photo albums, to name a couple. I've had them printed and given copies to the family, with great results. But when I upgraded to iPhoto '08, it looks as if they have become unprintable. Viewing an 'old' album, I notice the following odd behaviors:
    1) The usual strip of available photos or page layout thumbnails is not visible along the top of the window.
    2) The format of the books, all previously hardcover, seems to have been changed to paperback.
    3) Buttons along the bottom, like 'themes,' 'layout,' and 'advanced' do nothing.
    4) Most distressing--when I click 'Buy Book' I get an error message that said 'Invalid Product: This type of product cannot be ordered.'
This seems like a big problem to me--old books that may have continued relevance or may be in progress are no longer usable. True, it would only take me about 30 minutes to recreate the old books in the new iPhoto, but does anybody have any tips or similar experiences?
    --evan

    Evan:
You might consider what I'm doing for a particular project that requires the Storybook theme. That's to use iPhoto 6 on a special library created just for that book. You can use both versions but just have to be very careful when launching either version. I will launch iPhoto with the option key depressed so it reminds me to be sure to open the correct library for that version of iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Exclamation Mark instead of Pictures

Until last week I was using 10.4.11 and iPhoto 7.1.1 without any problems of any kind. I then had a larker hard disk built into my MBP. The Service Technician installed 10.5.1 onto the new disk by accident and sinced then i keep getting exclamation marks from my folders in iPhoto instead of pictures or when i try to work on the pictures the window is blank though the strip shows th picture that should be being seen. Before i update to 10.5.4, I want to see if there is anyother way of solving this. The stores are open tomorrow but the technicians are not there till monday.
The problem is somewhat critical because I need the pictures for my lectures and supervision this weekend.
    thanks in advance

It sounds like your library got corrupted in the upgrade process - do you have a currect back up of the library6.iphoto file and/or of the entire library?
If you have a backup of teh library6.iphoto file replace the on ein the corrupted library. Or If you have a total backup you should drag the iPhoto library from the pictures folder to the desktop and load the backup - if everything is ok delete the one from your desktop
If you do not ahve backupas then quit iPhoto, backup your iPhoto library and try rebuilding the library - launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and command (apple) keys - use the resulting dialogue to rebuild the library
It that does not work download iPhoto lLibrary Manager and use it to rebuild the library (it creats a new library so you will still have the old one)
If none of those work you will ahve to start over - quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library from the pictures folder to the desktop, launch iPhoto and create a new library - open the iPhoto library oin yoru desktop and drag each folder from the originals folder onto the running iPhoto (or onto the iphoto icon in the Dock) to create a new library with yoru old events - but no projects, albums etc

  • Exclamation mark instead of pictures (sophisticated)

    Yep,
I have actioned some suggestions and tried some tricks - w/o success. I have no more idea and seeking for help here now.
The problem can be reduced to one thing in iPhoto 11: while some pictures are alright, some others in the same event just show an exclamation mark when enlarging them. Lets say picture named "cimg0700.jpg" is ok, but when enlarging "cimg0699.jpg" the exclamation mark is shown. Both pictures are in the same folder!
In my desperation, I already did an "chmod -r 777" against the folder which contains my iPhoto Library. The iPhoto Library is located at
"/Users/Shared/Bilder/iPhoto Library". I have also rebuild the library using the build in feature of iPhoto. No success.
I already suspected Lion to have something to do with it. Since installing Lion I have all kind of strange trouble with my MacMini.
Does anyone has an idea how I can recover from this situation?
1000Thx! As I already wrote - I have absolutly no idea what to do next

Then the third option is your next step:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
