Do you have the Sony VAIO Entertainment Platform installed and running on your computer? If you do, it might be conflicting with iTunes.

  • Corrupt Files When Backing Up iTunes Library

    Hi
I want to back-up my iTunes library so that I have it incase anything goes wrong. I have read the article on how to back-up to an external hard disk (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751) and have bought a 16GB USB memory disk to put the contents on. However I keep hitting a problem........
When copying the library in explorer I always seem to get a message after a while saying that a certain folder/file cannot be copied due to being corrupt. I have tried a few times (starting from scratch) and it is not always the same file, and I have even managed to copy across files that it previously flagged as corrupt. The files do not actuallyappear to be corrupt as I can play them through iTunes (touch wood).
Has anyone else had this problem and got any solutions. Spent around 3 hours trying to back-up last night but ultimately I have got nowhere.
    Grateful for any advise.
    Chers

    You're welcome!
+I have tried though copying other stuff to it (films from my main computer) and it seemed to work fine so problem seems to be limited to iTunes library.+
    This is a good clue.
I suspect you're dragging the entire itunes folder over to the drive using Windows Explorer, and it is going for the whole thing at once? But when you just copy a few files over (those films), it does work?
That makes me think one (or three maybe) files in your itunes folder are giving it problems. You could try copying over in smaller batches. For instance, artist folders A through E, then F through O, P through Z.
If it still fails, try even smaller batches. Watch out for C, because the "Compilations" subfolder might be fairly large.
You might also want to back up your itunes library file, iTunes Library.itl.
That file holds all ratings, play counts, play lists, etc.
If you want to assign a drive letter, pick something pretty far down in the alphabet like M for Music.

I don't know if formatting it a different way (NTFS vs. FAT32) will help; just a thought.

  • IPod files keep getting erased + iTunes no longer detecting iPod

For the fourth time now I have plugged my ipod into my pc only to have all the files wiped from its harddrive. This was not such a big deal as I could just resync all the files, except now iTunes no longer recognizes my ipod (windows does, however).
    How can I fix this?

Yes, I've gone through all those steps.
Just to be clear, have you tried reassigning the iPod's drive letter as explained in the "related document": Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear ?

I just got my video ipod, and when i went to download music on it at iTunes, every song (4 in total) that I tried to download failed to do so, but took my money. All I got was this message,

    cosmini,
It is documented in the Apple Knowledgebase which can be searched at http://www.apple.com/support/
    This article lists the site:

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Corrupt files - tracks keep restarting in itunes?

I've been searching high and low for the cause or solution to this problem with no luck so maybe someone could help me out.
A while ago I important my entire MP3 collection into iTunes en mass. I told iTunes to copy files to the media folder and order them.
After a while I realised many albums within my collection had developed a reoccuring problem:
The track will start and play around 5-10 seconds and then it restarts again.
On closer inspection it appears that the actual file itself has been corrupted - an extra 5-10 second copy of the intro of a track is tagged onto the start.
I am trying to work out a correlation between all the albums that have become corrupt and the only thing I can think of is they may have all been wma files before imported to itunes. However after re-ripping a couple of CD's to itunes to replace some of the corrupted files the problem has poped up another couple of times. This only appears to have happened to files where I have added the artwork myself. So I'm thinking something is happening when the files is edited/converted in itunes? Maybe the metadata I don't know.
Any light shed would be much appreciated I havn't found anyone with this problem! Running Windows 7 Pro btw.
    Cheers,
    Andy

I'm still getting the same issue, files are disappearing for no reason. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

My iTunes won't open! It keeps saying 'The iTunes Library.itl is locked on a locked disk or you not have write permission for this file.' Please Help!

this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
    First Aid for external drive
    Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
    Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for internal hard drive
    Close iTunes
    Reboot system
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up"
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive)
    Reboot system, restart iTunes
If none of the above fixes your problem, post here.

  • ITunes .exe - Corrupt File

The file or directory \iPOD_Control\iTunesDB is corrput and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.
That is the message I keep receiving every time I open iTunes. My iTunes Library opens up with no problem, my iPod is recognized by the iTunes program and my computer. The problem is that NONE of the files on my iPod are visible or accesible in iTunes or after disconnect the iPod from my computer.
It does however still show that the amount gigs I had loaded onto my iPod previously is still on the iPod (i.e. it appears that everything loaded on my iPod is not erased but just inaccessible.)How do I fix this without losing my entire library of music?
FYI - I ran the Chkdsk utility two - three times and no effect. Restarted the computer, restarted iTunes - nothing happening.

Too many problems with my ipod video!!!Its a constant battle to get it working.
Ive tried to restore it but it sais "firmware update failure. Disk write error."
I tried deleteing the corrupt files in my temp music folder but it keeps telling me the directory cannot be deleted because its not empty, and when i delete song in the backup folder individually they just reapear!!

*so nobody knows how to fix it?*
Yes, we do know but you've taken steps to prevent implementation of the fix. You want your flat tire repaired but you refuse to allow the mechanic to jack up the car.
*apple, im tired of spending countless hours restoring my ipod everytime something goes wrong!*
Hold on, now. You're blaming Apple for having spent "countless hours" restoring the iPod yet you told me that you don't want to do the restore because you deliberately configured iTunes different from Apple's recommendations. Wow, that's heavy. $300 for an iPod but you won't spend $80 to upgrade your computer so that it can support the iPod.

  • This file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB is corrupt

...& unreadable. Please run chklst utility."
First I had problems with the battery not charging when connected to my laptop... this is probably due to the USB port on my laptop (probably, because I have no idea just what sort of USB port is 1.1. or 2.0... I'm an inept user, for goodness sake... emphasis on the inept!), so I now charge it up using the apple mains adapter.
Now, the case of the complete wiping out of all songs on the iPod seems to be related to the following message that keeps popping up: "This file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB is corrupt & unreadable. Please run chklst utility."
I've reistalled the iPod and iTunes software... several times... because I don't know how to "... run chklst utility." *points at big INEPT USER sign on head* I then am allowed to reload songs from my iTunes Library on to my iPodNano. They will stay there until the next time I have to recharge, or I connect the Nano back up to the laptop to add more songs.
Perhaps these toys were never meant for Inepts like me, eh?

    *big BIG sighs*
Than you for directing me to the discussion thread on corrupt file mesages. It's acutally very useful (and Inept-proof!).
Unfortunately, I'm encountering another problem when trying to follow the instructions to load the iPod Updater software:
I click on the Update Software button, and the screen changes to say: Thank You.
Your iPod Software download will start automatically.
followed by instructions on what to do next: Install the latest iPod Software.
After your download is finished, install the iPod Updater. Just launch the assistant and follow the on-screen instructions.
Unfortunately.......... My iPod Software download doesn't start automatically, and I'm just sitting here twiddling my thumbs until, eventually, I bang my head on the desk, look skyward and cry, "WHY ME????!"
    Do you know?
Why me? What I try now?

  • Help with fixing my iTunes - Corrupt File

I need help trying to correct the problem with my iTunes. I just installed the new iTunes update, iTunes 6.0.1, and now my iTunes isn't working properly. Everytime I open my iTunes, my library is gone. Luckily I saved my library before, but I don't want to keep reloading it over and over again when I open iTunes.
I keep getting a message saying, "iTunes.exe - Corrupt File" with a message saying "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Itunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"
I tried to repair iTunes, reinstalling it over and over again, and running the Chkdsk utility, but nothing works.
I am stumped and don't know what to do now.

    hi Nick!
"iTunes.exe - Corrupt File" with a message saying "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Itunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"
good lord ... okay, if it's not a hard drive problem, let's try downloading some fresh definitions and doing vigorous spyware and virus scans.
    does that show up anything?
    love, b

  • Help! iphoto 4 freezes when finds a corrupt file

    Hi all,
on my old pb 12' g4 (10.3.9 1.33) i am trying to make a backup of my iphoto by putting it onto another computer via target mode and small flash drives. this became more timely when we dropped our pb from the kitchen table onto our tile floor (yes, oh how i love magsafe on my mb!!!).
so, here's the thing - i know i have some corrupt files - in iphoto and in itunes - but when i'm moving files, the transfer works...until it hits a corrupt file. then beach ball until i need to manually shut down and start again, ignoring the section of folders that might have included my corrupt file.
why isn't panther (or osx) keen enough to just skip over and transfer everything that is readable? it is very, very time consuming to drag each folder one by one hoping it doesn't contain a corrupt file...
any ideas? my transfer is almost complete. just a few sketchy folders to deal with now...and lots of spinning beach balls!
    thanks, paul

thanks for the ideas, bf. i understand that files are stored in packages all over the hard drive, but i would like the os to be able to 'pass' over a sequence of packages that can't be found and move to the next file. i mean, doesn't this sound doable? so a file isn't responding...so move to the next one rather than spinning beach ball until manual shut down...
the transfer of the library is moving photo folders from my home folder on my g4 pb and dragging them into my macbook iphoto. i used target mode and was able to move 3000 of 6000 photos until the spinning beach ball. now i've been going into each folder in my pb home folder and putting it onto a flashdrive so i can move them onto my mb and into iphoto on that computer.
i know my transferring of photos isn't causing the corruption, and i know my flashdrive is fine on both my macs. Yes, i was using firewire via target mode until the beach ball.
so now, i'm almost done my transfer. i have narrowed the corrupt files to about 7 folders--but i don't know how many photos this actually is because my computer beach balls each time i go into those folders. i guess, with corrupt files, that this is as close as i might get to moving my photos. i mean, i know some will be lost - i know i have corrupt files - i'm just trying to get as many as i can off of my old pb and into my mb.
i'll keep you posted, and i'm always loving the wisdom and experience on this posting board!

  • ITunes keeps on freezing/crashing

I had to remove and re-add a lot of my music because I changed file servers recently.
Well in the midst of all that, iTunes froze. So I force-quit it, and then restarted it. Well lo and behold, it crashes after a few seconds (whether I click somewhere or I don't) it keeps on freezing.
I've restarted twice, but no dice. I don't want to remove the com.Apple.iTunes.plist file because I don't want to have to re-add everything, but the biggest problem is that all my podcasts, my iPod syncing preferences would be ruined, wouldn't they?
Any ideas on how to fix it?

The plist shouldn't remove anything. Try to remove it (while iTunes is closed, of course). If you want to be safe, have a backup of the file.
You may also want to eliminate any plugins you have installed. Those can sometimes cause funkiness with iTunes updates.
