Corrupt files in a Macbook

I thought Apple computers weren't supposed to be able to get corrupt files... will this screw up things when I sync to a new Apple?

Corruptiion can happen if you don't maintain it. Did you do the following?
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk for OS 10.6.8 and under. If you are running 10.7 or 10.8 run Disk Repair from Disk Utility on your Recovery System. It shows you how in the link.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.

You open them one at a time into thier respective programs and see if they are good or not and then send the bad ones to the Trash and the good ones to the appropriate folder.

"The new java Version 7 Update 13 is not exactly helpful in macbook pro.
try the version 11 or 12 they should work perfectly."
The OP is running 10.6.8 so Java 6 is his option at this point.

The PDF file and slideshow view corrupted using iPhoto. Macbook air only get corrupted slideshow and Mac Mini both slideshow and PDF file is corrupted.

Saving as a PDF file for some users have been a problem.  If you boot into  Safe Mode and run iPhoto you can create undamaged PDF files.  We don't know why the problem but this is a workaround.
This problem prevents many from ordering books, calendars and cards since iPhoto creates PDF file of them for uploading and printing.  Booting into Safe Mode lets them successfully order those items.

  • Disk problem in MacBook Pro (hardware or corrupted files?)

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a 15" MBP 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB RAM (added 1 to the original setup.)
A few months ago I replaced the original 120 GB hard drive, as it was getting full and making my computer slower. The new one is a 350 GB 5400 rpm Western Digital drive. I did this myself, following the instructions in ifixit.com, as I have done it in the past with other machines, including my wife's MBP, that is working fine.
In the first OS install I used migration assistant and recreated the original user exactly as in the old disk. After a couple of months of use the computer started to get slower and presented permission problems that didn't seem serious (used Disk Utility to check). After a while, there was also a report of problems on disk verification, that at one point couldn't be repaired with Disk Utility. I was able to get rid of the problem for a while using Disk Warrior, but at some point the disk problems appeared again and I had to do a new OS install from zero.
This time I formatted the hard drive writing zeros to correct possible physical errors and did a clean install. Used migration assistant to copy only my user's documents and library. After a couple of weeks of running the laptop without problems, I am having again reports of disk errors that Disk Utility can't repair. Disk Warrior can't access the drive and Tech Tool Pro reports 72 bad sectors.
    My question is:
Is this definitely a hardware problem that will be solved by replacing the hard drive again, or is it possible that this is being the result of some corrupt files on my user's library (as the problem only appears after a while)?

    ign wrote:
Is it normal that the drve appears to be OK after an OS install and that the physical problem only appears after a while?
If you zero it, yes. That's exactly what zeroing does, "mapping" the HD so bad sectors/blocks are not used. But if a HD is dying, more bad areas will show up. It's time to replace the HD.

  • Corrupted files in Bridge

I have recently started migrating image files (Camera raw + JPGs) from older external drives to new drives (same brand - G-drive) I have never had any issues with these drives until they were way past their prime. I just viewed folders in bridge and saw image thumbnails BECOME CORRUPTED as I scrolled through the folders. I opened the files, and they were corrupted. (no prompt, just gargbage). I am assuming there was either a problem with the new drive, or with the transfer process. I am posting here because I had similar issues a few years back with raw files from an older camera, and a previous version of Bridge. After multiple updates, Bridge no longer corrupted raw files from that camera. I'm using Bridge 5.0.2.4 (will update to new version today).
The corrupted files were (drag) copied from multiple external hard drives.
I want to know if anyone is encountering similar corruptions? These are Canon Raw files from a Canon 5D (1st gen)
    MacBook pro "15" late 2011, OS 10.7.5 - 8Gb Dram
These are the first corrupted files I have encountered using this MacBook. It has been very stable. I did however, find hard drives going into Sleep Mode during long tranfers, even when I had set prefs NOT to let Computer OR Hard Drives sleep.

What type of RAW files are we talking about, NEF,CR2 or other?
Bridge is just a flle browser, and RAW files are opened and edited in Adobe Camera Raw.  Do you just get a thumbnail, but it willl not open in ACR?
Does ACR work with other RAW images that have not been corrupted.
Do you have a backup (highly recommended) of these images somewhere?  Should be on seperate physical drive or on a DVD.

  • IPod Nano 3rd Gen Corrupted File

    Hello Everyone
So I have two computers, I have a PC laptop running Windows 7 and a MacBook Pro. I originally connected my Nano to my macbook to sync to iTunes, but I want to transfer everything to my PC, including my Nano. I've tried to restore my Nano on my PC, but it says that there is a corrupted file, and I don't know what this means....I also already sold my MacBook and can't get it back.
Is there a way this can be fixed?
    Thanks

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Perhaps try reformatting using the instructions provided in this article. Just make sure it's not a quick format. And yes the instructions were written for Windows XP, but the steps are quite similar on Windows 7.

  • All of a Sudden, lots of corrupted files

I've never had this issue with lightroom 5.  All of a sudden, I'm getting corrupted files, some of them disappear , and some seem to be corrupted AFTER I've already processed it.  Very odd.  I use a Nikon D7100 with Delkin Devices 64gb SD 633x.  I just got these new Delkin Cards, which up until now, were smokin'!  Now I don't know if its the card or lightroom.  The cards were formatted like usual before I used them.  Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
    Ken

Ok, I got the Delkin card reader and I only had 7 corrupted photos instead of dozens out of 500 imported.  So there's a positive.
As for the question of the RAM upgrade, I got the RAM from Out of This World Computing http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/.  It was installed by UbreakIfix (You Break , I fix).  I know the "Mac" guy over there and there have been no other issues otherwise.  This Macbook flies better than ever.
The fact that you are still seeing corrupted files implies that the reader wasn't the issue. It is possible that the built in reader just maps to different parts of memory than the external one. Normally I would 100% trust RAM from OWC. I've bought memory from them for decades now and never seen a dud. However, you might have some bad memory here. One thing to try is to revert to the old memory and see if you still have the problem. It is strange that you are not seeing massive problems just running the computer though. If images are corrupting that frequently I would expect that to happen to other parts of memory too. Have you checked for a hard disk problem? Open Disk Utility (from /Applications/Utilities) and select the top level of your hard disk. Check if it says "S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified" in the bottom of the screen. Then click on the hard disk icon that represents your internal disk (usually "Macintosh HD") and click "Verify Disk". If there are any errors found, it will tell you how to repair them. If you don't see any errors, try doing a "repair Disk Permissions".

  • How to find corrupted files

With my 2 yr old macbook, I cannot update my recently purchased iphone 4 when an ipdate is available. I get message: "...device isn't eligble for requested rebuild." I have worked with Apple store Genius bar staff 4 times with no sucess.  Latest attempt was to erase HD, reinstall OS X, and only reinstall itunesin orde to test the update feature.  In this scenario, with only itunes on the macbook, the update is successful.  However, after  I drag and dropped many, but not all, of my programs and files from the saved data on external HD back onto the macbook, and tried an update on a different iphone 4 (in our family plan), same problem.  So I guess somewhere in what I transferred back onto  the macbook is a bad file.  I suppose I could go through the tedious process of transferring one program/file at a time onto the macbook, then trying the update again, but I can't do an update after each transfer because there is no new update to download, as they come out only every so often.
Is there a program that can scan the external HD to find bad/corrupted files?  I have Spring cleaning and Drive Genius, neither of which seem to have the features to do such a scan (they do have disk scan, which I have run, along with Apple's Tech Tool, and all such scan operations have show no problems)
(to complicate this, this apparent bad file on this macbook likely came from my white intel based iMac.  I first discovered this "updating of the iphone 4 problem" on the imac.  When we bought the macbook, we bought one to one and had the Apple store do a complete transfer from the imac to the macbook in its first time set up.  I purchased the iphone 4 in Sep 2010 and first tried an update in Nov 2010, which failed.  I have been back to the Apple Genius bar 5 times since then with this problem.  During one of those visits, Genius suggested trying to do just the update of my iphone 4 from the macbook, and that is when we discovered the macbook had the same problem.  So this bad file likely was transferred to the macbook in that initial set up transfer.  Furthermore, this macbook is still under AppleCare, yet that does not seem to mean anything to the Genius Bar.  Tomorrow I will call applecare about this, but in the meantime, if anyone out there has a clue, I'm much obliged.

I didn't know of this console feature.  I see Mozy.backup doing something.  I had tried Mozy on this imac a long time ago and stopped using it, and I thought I had deleted it.  When I just now searched for mozy, all I get is .pdf file.  Do you think this could be the problem and how would I get totally rid of mozy files?  Thanks

  • Is there an ap for finding/deleting corrupt files on OS X 10.7?

I seem to have a corrupt file(s) which cause my MacBook Pro to freeze inexplicably (and randomly) upon start-up. I've been told that this is a symptom of having a corrupt file.
Is there an an for finding/deleting corrupt files on OS X 10.7?
I'm pretty much bound to my computer and simply don't have the time to go through it manually.
    Thank you.

This is an old post and I am not the person who posted the original query, but I ran your terminal diagnostic and am hoping you are still attending to this forum. I have a mid 2011 macbook Air 11", 256 GB SSD, 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB  1333 MHz DDR3, Mac OS X v. 10.7.5 Lion. I have had various problems in my user homefolder for a while. I have gone through quite a few other troubleshooting and fixing steps, the most extensive following a posting here "Step by Step to fix your mac" by ds store in the Apple forums. These steps helped a lot. I did remove some 3rd party software as part of this process.
My computer is running well in general now, but one thing that has been a recurring problem is problems with move/cut-paste. I researched this online and ACL's being present where they're not supposed to be seems to be an issue. I have used terminal commands to remove ACL's, used Onyx to repair user permissions, rebooted with command-r to reset password screen and reset user permissions. They all help, but then a some point later on the problem recurs. When I run repair disk permissions with either disk utility or onyx I always get this message:
    Repairing permissions for “maggieairHD”
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
ACL found but not expected on “Users”
    Repaired “Users”
    Permissions repair complete
This ALWAYS comes up, even if I run it immediately after running it and haven't done anything else on the computer in between.
I created another user and did not have the same problems I was having at the time with some programs, although I haven't used it that much to be able to really compare. The home folder permissions repair in Onyx comes out the same in that user, though.
Here are my results from your diagnostic terminal commands:

I have removed NoSleep, Caffeine, itunesHelper and Dropbox from login items before and didn't notice any difference, so I put them back. Some of these I know I don't want, like rim/blackberry, adobe AIR. Skype has never worked consistently on this computer. I don't use most of these Services, and I know I had trouble with some that were not compatible with Lion before. I am not using Parallels much now, have been thinking about taking it off as it uses a chunk of my SSD. But I don't feel confident about getting rid of .frameworks etc safely.
I am glad to remove anything I don't use if I know how to do it safely. I am willing to remove anything I do use if it's necessary, but obviously would prefer to find a way to keep things that I find helpful.
    I appreciate any suggestions!

  • Recovering corrupt files -- everything appears to be fine

    Operating System: Mac Osx
    Computer: Macbook Pro
    Program: Adobe Photoshop CS5
I was using adobe photoshop today for painting purposes (not to alter images). I saved the file multiple times just to be safe, and spent about 5 hours or so on a project. I closed the file quite a few times as well and I was able to open it no problem. Upon the last save (which, according to the program, was successful) I decided to take a break from the computer. After saving, I exited the file and proceeded to shut down my mac. It went through its normal procedure of quitting whatever programs were open. For some reason or another, Photoshop wouldn't quit, stopping the shut down. I forced quit (mind you, the file I hadopen previously was already saved and exited out of) and my mac shut down.
A few hours later I booted up my computer to continue working on the project. I clicked on the file and phtoshop opened like normal, began to load the file, and stopped suddenly saying that "There was a problem reading layer data. Read composite data instead?" I clicked yes and got the message "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."
I researched the topic on several sites and found the file to be considered corrupt. I downloaded two recovery softwares. The first worked at recovering some layers -- but all of them were ruined beyond use. The second failed to work.
I guess my question is, is there anything else I can do to more successfully recover the file?
I don't understand how it can randomly corrupt. My computer did not simply "poop out on me" or anything. It shut down, like normal. And a force quit never hurt any of my photoshop files in the past.
Also, looking at the "info" regarding the file, the number of bytes remains the same, the layers remain in tact, the file type remains the same, color space and color profiles remain the same, etc. So what exactly is corrupt?
    Please help!
I understand if the file is lost. I just don't understand how.
    Thanks,
    Sam

It's a risk you take with force quitting that your files get corrupt. Often they're fine, sometimes they're not.
    For this Time:
File recovery programs have mixed results... I've normally used them when someone accidentally deletes an important file, but don't know how well they'd work for a corrupted file. Typically I can't recover any corrupted files. But you can hope that your computer just got a little confused and try these things:
First, I'd restart in Safe Mode. Hold down the shift key while restarting your machine. This is supposed to take it back to the last working settings - hopefully the settings that were working to open your document.
Then I would try zapping the p-ram (probably a good idea anyway). Restart your computer and when you hear the 'bong' sound, hold down apple + option + p + r (yes, it takes some dexterity). This will help if it's a problem the Computer is having at Reading the file, which it could be, since you say that the file is the right size and seems to have all the right data.
I'd also run Applejack, which will clear the caches and reset file permissions. Whatever process in PS is trying to read the file may not be able to access all of its parts because the permissions got corrupted but nothing else. This is also a good idea to run anyway.
    It's free from here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15667/applejack
To run it after installation, restart your computer holding down apple + s until it comes up with white text on a black screen. Type applejack and hit enter. Autopilot should be fine, so type a and enter. Let it do its work and then restart it by typing r.
    Tips for Next Time:
Don't force quit. Let the program cancel the shut down instead, wait for it to quit, and Then shutdown. Usually it's still working on something. In this case it sounds like it was working to save your document. It'll finish working on it next time if it can, and therefore recover your files, but shutting down will stop and reset any processes (normally the point of restarting) and increases the risk of losing your files.
If you saved it, don't worry about recovering the file through the program. It doesn't need to be recovered. The program only thinks it does, because that's the last thing it remembers. (You didn't do this, but it produces similar errors.)

  • Help! iphoto 4 freezes when finds a corrupt file

    Hi all,
on my old pb 12' g4 (10.3.9 1.33) i am trying to make a backup of my iphoto by putting it onto another computer via target mode and small flash drives. this became more timely when we dropped our pb from the kitchen table onto our tile floor (yes, oh how i love magsafe on my mb!!!).
so, here's the thing - i know i have some corrupt files - in iphoto and in itunes - but when i'm moving files, the transfer works...until it hits a corrupt file. then beach ball until i need to manually shut down and start again, ignoring the section of folders that might have included my corrupt file.
why isn't panther (or osx) keen enough to just skip over and transfer everything that is readable? it is very, very time consuming to drag each folder one by one hoping it doesn't contain a corrupt file...
any ideas? my transfer is almost complete. just a few sketchy folders to deal with now...and lots of spinning beach balls!
    thanks, paul

thanks for the ideas, bf. i understand that files are stored in packages all over the hard drive, but i would like the os to be able to 'pass' over a sequence of packages that can't be found and move to the next file. i mean, doesn't this sound doable? so a file isn't responding...so move to the next one rather than spinning beach ball until manual shut down...
the transfer of the library is moving photo folders from my home folder on my g4 pb and dragging them into my macbook iphoto. i used target mode and was able to move 3000 of 6000 photos until the spinning beach ball. now i've been going into each folder in my pb home folder and putting it onto a flashdrive so i can move them onto my mb and into iphoto on that computer.
i know my transferring of photos isn't causing the corruption, and i know my flashdrive is fine on both my macs. Yes, i was using firewire via target mode until the beach ball.
so now, i'm almost done my transfer. i have narrowed the corrupt files to about 7 folders--but i don't know how many photos this actually is because my computer beach balls each time i go into those folders. i guess, with corrupt files, that this is as close as i might get to moving my photos. i mean, i know some will be lost - i know i have corrupt files - i'm just trying to get as many as i can off of my old pb and into my mb.
i'll keep you posted, and i'm always loving the wisdom and experience on this posting board!

  • Newbie Question - Corrupt Files

    Hello all-
I'm just learning the ins and outs of using and maintaining my MacBook. Honestly, before I owned a Mac I never cared about running maintenance scripts, backing up, etc. Anyway, I like to peruse the forums just to gain knowledge and see what everyone else is talking about, and I noticed a topic that appears fairly frequently: corrupt files. Why do files suddenly become corrupt, and is there something I can do to prevent this?
    Thanks.

    rj80:
    You are very welcome.
In terms of preventive measures, Unix Maintenance (CRON cleaning) is one of the very important procedures. See Gulliver's article for details and links to software to assist with this task.
Running Disk Repair from Disk Utility or starting up in Safe Mode from time to time keeps you on top of what is going on with your directories.
One of the commonest problems many users run into is letting their HDDs get too full. The rule of thumb is to have 15-20% free space on your drive. Not only does this enable you computer to perform better, but it also helps prevent directory issues, which can lead to data loss and eventually a Hard Disk crash.
I appreciate your thoughtfulness in awarding stars. Thank you.
    Good luck.

  • Photo corrupted, repair software for MacBook Pro?

I have transferred photos from an old PC to a MacBook Pro.  I noticed in the PC some of the photos are corrupted which ends up the same on my Mac after I transferred them.  They are photos for a large family book that I am working on.
I need to know if there is (preferably free) software to repair/restore photos for a Mac?
Any thoughts are appreciated before I back up my Mac pictures/files on an external hard-drive.  I don't want to lose any of the photos.
    Thanks!

Do not waste money on Disk Warrior. First of all, it doesn't fix corrupt files at all, ever. It recovers damaged volume directories. Second, if you have adequate backups, you'll never need to recover a damaged directory, so you'll never need Disk Warrior. In this situation, it will do you no good at all. Your only hope is to restore the damaged files from a backup. If you don't have one, there's nothing to do. You will inevitably lose all data that isn't backed up, sooner or later.
Linc, Cannot argue with that at all.
I have an enormous number of support calls where Disk Warrior resolved or even saved a corrupted drive or RAID. Almost always this is necessitated only because there were insufficient backups in place. And Linc is absolutely correct, DW does not do anything except repair and modify directories. I have owned Disk Warrior for 10 years or more and have not used it for more years than I can remember. I maintain backups of everything and always find it easier to revert to a backup than to attempt repairs of a problem RAID/drive/directory/set of files.
In your case, I would not rule it out if you owned it, but would not spend money on it now. If you cannot go to the source PC and try to recover these files, then your copying corrupted file to a different operating system has negligible chance of repairing them.

  • When my new MacBookPro/Lion awakes from sleep I get network Diagnostics telling me I'm not connected to the internet. After I step through ND it says connection is fine and I can connect. software bug? Corrupted file carried forward from my old Mac?

When my brand new MacBookPro awakes from sleep it has lost its internet connection. It goes to Network Diagnostics and I need to step through all the pages to get to the end where it says connection is o.k. Is this a bug in Lion or could it be a corrupt file migrated over from my old MacBook Pro which would frequently lose its Airport connection and couldn't be reconnected until it cooled down. (This one always shows full bars on the Airport indicator).

That's definitely just paranoia.  First, because in sleep mode, there's no internet connection.  The computer might as well be turned off as far as the network is concerned, and there's no activity in the computer other than a bare trickle of electricity to maintain the RAM.  The processor is doing nothing.
Second, Macs are quite difficult to hack, and if you're on a wireless network, the wireless router protects you from incoming attacks from the outside world.
Of course, you should be able to leave Safari open with no open windows and not affect your ability to get online when it wakes up.  If you can reproduce that reliably, and if I can as well (haven't had a chance to try it yet), then it should be reported to Apple.
