Corrupt hard drive due to word document

Brand new Mac Book Pro, Lion just crashed while writing a MS Word letter with photos added.  First the Auto save started having problems, then my computer reported that the disc was full.  Then MS Word spun in place and froze and then the Disk Utility went beserk when I tried to repair the computer.  I had to restore the system but luckily it did allow me to Clone Back Up before it totally crashed.  Not fun!  There is a problem.

This is a long-lasting and severe problem which has been discussed extensively in this thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3504333?start=150&tstart=0
which is up to 178 messages. The basic problem is that when you have:
A large Word document
AND are running Time Machine, i.e. it is turned on even if not active;
THEN
Use of MS Word can corrupt your file system in various ways. I believe this is still true under OS 10.8.2 and I assume under 10.8.3. The corruption is quite serious - quite often Disk Utility refuses to repair the disk and tells you to reinstall everything, as happened to you.
I switched to Nissus Writer Pro instead of Word. Many people instead turn off Time Machine when working on a Word document. I recently tried to get away with working on a small Word document, but I got "caught."
Other factors appear to make the problem more likely: Using an SSD; having Word Auto Save turned on. But these are not necessary conditions. Good luck to us all. Maybe most of the world avoids large Word files?

  • How Do I Copy File Names & Folders From A Hard Drive To A Word Document?

    Hi Gang:
This may sound silly but I am having a herd time with the following - seemingly simple task.
I have data DVD-Rs with audio files organized into folders. Each folder contains audio files related to the folder name.
I would like to copy the file names and folders from a DVD-R and paste them into a MS Word file. I am just looking to get a listing of files as they appear on the DVD-Rs in their folders.
The problem is that when I copy and paste, the order changes (seemingly randomly) and the file names are no longer under the folder names. In fact, the whole thing looks to be really random.
Anybody know how to copy file/folder names from a hard drive or DVD-R to a word document and retain the file/folder structure?
    Thanks!
    LAHD

There is an even easier method with no Terminal magic required. In the Finder, select all the files you want the names of, press Command-C, switch to Word and press Command-V. Poof, your done.
If you view the DVD in List VIew, you can expand the folders you want the files for, then select all the files (and their folders if you want them too) and then do the Copy/Paste thing.

  • Corrupt hard drive due to sims 3

I installed the sims 3 for my little brother, the game ran well then when he went to quit it went all black. I had to thrn it off by the button and ran a disk utility check. My hardcover is now corrupt due to the volume not being the right number. Is this because of the game it self or the fact I had to turn it off by the button? This is happened 3 times now and scared the 3rd time it won't fix when I try and fix it. Do I uninstall the sims also before trying to use the disk to fix it?

I know. But would it be better if I uninstalled the sims before I use the install DVD Isit a serious corrupt? and I cannot get my cd for two weeks due to it being at Uni could his also make it worse leaving it for 2 weeks? Sorry to sound like a donut.

  • HT1386 I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore.  Now my iTunes says my iPhone 5 is no longer an authorized device.  What should I do?

I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore.  I had to rebuild my iTunes Library by dragging my music folders in my iTunes Media into the iTunes Application and rebuild my playlists manually.  After plugging my iPhone 5 into the computer USB, it immediately recognized my iPhone 5, showing: last backups, space left on my iPhone & all options available.  I then checked the box to manually manage music etc.  The problem I am now having is that when I actually try to drag music from my iTunes to my phone a prompt comes up saying that my iPhone is not an authorized device.  What should I do?  Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    jrmetzger,
iOS runs on iPads and iPhones; OS X runs on Macs.
Given your situation, I’d highly recommended that you purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter, so that you can test both your old disk and your new disk externally, since it might be that the problem is due to a faulty internal SATA cable rather than due to faulty disks.

My itunes library was on my PC.  About two years ago I switched it to my Seagate server/hardrive. (itunes-preferences-advanced-change library). Last summer (2012) I bought a macbook, which seems to access the seagate server hard drive fine for word docs, excel spreadsheets, etc. It also seems to have started its own library which is not complete. My PC died this summer (I still have it though).
Now when syncing any of the multiple devices (ipods, ipads, iphones) that we have with my mac book, itunes states that "an error occurred" or the "app cannot be found".  Itunes wants me to erase the device and sync with my macbook. The message "The iPhone “Renee’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library on “Renee PC”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."appears.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My macbook pro hard drive went bad and i bought a new one and installed it. Now i have the old corrupted hard drive in my hand and i am looking to recover my files from it, any suggestions please? too bad i never backed them up.

After you have installed the OSX on the new HDD in your MBP, install the old HDD in an enclosure and connect it to your MBP via USB.  Then try to drag and drop  your data to the new HDD.
If this proves unsuccessful, you may look for data recovery software on the Internet.  There will be free trails to see if it will work or not.  If the trial suggests that it will work, then you will have to purchase the software.
The last resort is a professional data recovery service that will offer NO guarantees and charge a lot of money.
As you now can appreciate, backups eliminate such predicaments.
    Ciao.

  • VM leak led to corrupted hard drive.

I am running 10.7.4 with a 250 GB solid state drive. Space is a big issue for me since I do bioinformatics w large files using genome data. One program I need to use for work exonerate, has a big memory leak issue in OSX. It's not the only program that does, I've had a good look at the forums and have complained about this issue before. The difference is that I can't stop using this program because it's for work. It ***** up all the available HD space with the vm swap files, as much as 60-80GB at a time. The last time I had to reboot before the analysis was complete- which was unfortunate becase it had been running all day and now I have to restart it but not soon because it seems the last memory issue and scramble to delete stuff and make more room has resulted in a corrupted hard drive. Not sure how this happenened but also not surprised.
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 27615695 instead of 16346753)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

    And the question is?

  • CORRUPT HARD DRIVE ON I POD

I have had my 3rd generation 20GB i pod for 18 months and the file logo appeared recently. I decided to take it to my local Apple store on Regent Street and was informed that my i pod had a corrupt hard drive. I asked the shop assistant what he could recommend and he said that because my i pod was out of warrenty they couldn't do anything apart from send it off to Apple which would cost me in the region of £200! This is outrageous! Can anyone help, my i pod cost me £350 and i really don't think that i should have to fork out £200 to get it fixed.

Ii don't know if this would help you, but if you have DiskWarrior perhaps you can restore the Directory in the iPod drive. I have never done this, so I don't know for sure if it will work. You also might try using Apple's DiskUtility to repair the drive...

  • Saving documents on the external hard drive that already contains documents

I have just purchased a new iMac and I want to save documents on an existing external hard drive I have.  When I try to save the document is says Macintosh HD read only.  And when I try to print documents that are already in the hard drive it says Secured documents. Help!

You can use one of those software, or put your Mac in virtualized Windows mode to write to it, or put the hard drive back in a PC and network to the PC.
    Virtualization tools are shown here:

  • Pavilion dv8t 1100 with possible corrupted hard drive

I get a "hard drive corrupted" message when I try to back up my notebook.   the messages bascially says that some files were skipped due to corruption.   The skipped files are all on the c drive and are all the documents/music/photos/etc.
When I run the hard drive test through the diagnostics menu at start up, it says there are no issues.
Of course this computer warranty has recently expired, so I am trying to determine the next steps.
Ideas?    I am able, to transfer files via window's explorer to my seagate back up, so am in the process of doing so, but need to fix the problem.
    Thanks.

Run a check disk on the hard drive
    http://www.w7forums.com/use-chkdsk-check-disk-t448.html
once it is scheduled, restart the PC, it will run before Windows loads, do not interrupt the chkdsk once it starts.

  • Corrupt hard drive needs to be replaced?

I WAS TOLD BY BEST BUY GEEK SQUAD WHEN I TOOK MY LAPTOP TO THEM A FEW MONTHS AGO THAT MY HARD DRIVE IS CORRUPTED AND I NEED TO REPLACED IT. IS IT TRUE THAT I HAVE TO REPLACED MY HARD DRIVE AND THEN USE MY RECOVERY DISC WHICH I DON'T HAVE TO FIX THE PROBLEM?

    Hi:
It depends on what the hard drive diagnostics test reported, as to whether or not it needs to be replaced, or if only the operating system needs to be restored.
You can probably order recovery disks from HP for your notebook, but without knowing the full model number of it, I would not be able to provide any further details.
If you do not know the full model number of your notebook, then please read the guide at the link below for how to find out that info.

  • FYI: Corrupt hard drive will cause target disk mode to fail

I have just finished restoring my nephew's iBook which had had a major disk corruption issue - keys out of order, invalid key lengths, etc. in the catalog. While the iBook would boot, it had a lot of problems running due to the corrupt file system.
As part of the restoration process, I tried to connect the iBook in target disk mode, but had a lot of trouble. Apparently, bad file system data structures will cause the target disk mode to hang; I needed to disconnect the iBook from my main system to get out of the SPOD. In the end, I booted the iBook from the installation DVD and ran Disk Utility from there to reformat the hard drive. Surprisingly, it was impossible to reformat the drive in target disk mode due to the corruption.
Once the disk was reformatted, target disk mode worked fine, and I was able to restore the entire system (less files lost due to the corruption) in that mode.

It is impossible to say what can be recovered without knowing the cause of the installation failure. The possibilities range from some interfering third party addition to the previously installed OS to a substandard or degraded hardware component (especially RAM) that can't meet the more stringent demands of the new OS version.
All I can suggest is to try Target Disc Mode & see what you can recover to another drive -- one that your bother should have had for backups to begin with & should now see the value of having if he did not before.
If that doesn't work, the alternatives are investing in special data recovery software (moderately expensive) or a data recovery service (very, very expensive).
