Corrupt Harddrive Question

Recently my Mac Book Pro has been very slow when starting up. Today I ran a disk utility check on the hard drive and the report came back that my hard drive was corrupt and to reboot in disk utility mode. When I did that and tried to run the scan nothing showed up as corrupt.
Any clues as to what is wrong with my computer and how to fix it?
Here is the disk utility report where it said the hard drive was corrupt:

  • Corrupted Harddrive! Stuck in disk utility!

Upon starting up my Macbook Pro (Late 2011- Lion) gets stuck on the gray screen with the Apple symbol and the spinning gear. When I enter disk utility by ressing the option key at startup and verify my harddrive it tells me the disk needs to be repaired. I go to repair and it says I cannot. So here is what I've done, I plugged in an external harddrive to my mac and copied the corrupted disk image to it in hopes of then reinstalling Lion on my computer and then once my laptop is running I can plug in my external HDD and using Diskwarrior (or a similar software) I can repair the damaged disk and then copy all of that information back onto my computer. Question is, will this work????
    Thanks!

What reason did Disk Utility give you as to why it could not repair the drive? You say you Verified the drive, but never Repaired it. Why not?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • External harddrive questions

I have a WD My Passport 320 GB for Mac and I just saved a 20 Gb folder to it. In addition, I deleted (command+backspace) a few older folders I had stored there.
The only thing left should be a 20 GB folder. However, when I select Get Info, it says:
Used 54 GB (should say 20)
Available 265 GB (should say about 300)
I have several questions about this:
    1. Why does the file size not update?
    2. How can I make it update? (Does it help if I Securely Empty the trash can?)
    3. Does this mean that only 265 GB is available?
And followup... I went to Disk Utility to consider Erasing the external harddrive and selected Security Option 2: Zero Out Data. Then I went to Erase Free Space and got started but as it was going to take 5 hours I quit the application...
    4. Would this be a good idea and exactly what should I select - have never used DU before...
There is Erase Free Space or just Erase... I can resave my folder again in needed, so I could delete all of it if that's better.
    5. Which security option should I use?
    6. Did I mess up my current folder by briefly getting it started, for 10s or so, and then quitting?
    Any help most welcome!

If the files you trashed were on the WD external, then yes, it will have to be connected to the computer when you empty the Trash. Every drive has its own Trash folder on it, and that folder won't be emptied unless the drive containing it is connected to the computer when you choose the Empty Trash command.
Yes, you should run the Repair Disk command in Disk Utility before you empty the Trash. That will enable DU to make sure all the files on the external drive, including those in the Trash, are correctly identified and their locations on the disk are known accurately before anything is actually deleted from the drive's directory.
Don't erase the drive unless you want to lose the 20GB folder you just copied to it. And if you do want to erase the drive, don't bother with the Write Zeroes option unless you have unusual security requirements or you suspect the drive has hardware problems. The Write Zeroes command can also be run overnight if you do have a good reason for running it.

  • Repairing/restoring a corrupt drive (question 2: am I copying corruption?)

Drive Genius' DrivePulse is warning me that my MBP's internal drive is corrupt and needs to be repaired. I've booted DG from a separate drive, and DU from Disk Utility in Recovery, and NEITHER ONE COULD REPAIR the drive.
Ironically, my usual go-to bootable external CCC clone seems to have fritzed out =today= as well. So after an emergency trip to Staples, I've just finished installing Mavericks on a new 1TB, and I've restored from (ahem) this same corrupt drive. Hence the question: AM I JUST TRANSFERRING THE CORRUPTION? How can I know one way or another? What can I do to prevent that? In the restore, does DU just read and transfer only "good" data? I can't possibly check every single file. How can I have any reasonable certainty of data integrity?
Note that SEPARATELY I have just posted a question asking for input on whether it's better to use TM or my CCC bootable clone as the source to restore my MBP's internal 1TB rotational drive, which I just bought six months ago. If you have input on that, points are available separately there. (And I have a third question still separately, but these two are more important.)
I appreciate any practical experience and/or links to reliable support pages.
    Thank you.

The Advanced settings panel is accessible through the customizable settings window. Click the "Customize these settings" button in CCC's main window, then click on the "Advanced Settings" button to reveal the Advanced Settings panel.  Select Calculate a checksum for every compared file  With this advanced option, CCC will calculate the MD5 checksum of every file on the source and every corresponding file on the destination. CCC then uses these MD5 checksums to determine if a file should be copied. This option will obviously increase your backup time, but it will expose any corrupted files within your backup set on the source and destination. This is a method of verifying that the files that have been copied to your destination volume actually match the contents of the files on the source volume. Plase note also  that CCC will never replace a valid file on your destination with an unreadable, corrupt file from the source. If CCC cannot read a file on your source volume, any existing backup of that file will remain intact on your backup volume and CCC will report an error, advising you to replace the source file with the intact backup version.
Plase note also that the checksum option verifies the integrity of the files on your destination volume before the  files are copied. In general, the checksum of a file immediately after it is written to disk is of questionable value. Most disks have a write cache, and file data goes to the cache before it is written to actual media. If you write a file and then immediately ask to read it back, as much as x amount of data (where x = the size of the cache) is going to come from the volatile cache. If any of the file's data comes from the write cache, then the checksum doesn't reflect the status of the data on the permanent media, and that really defeats the purpose of checksumming the file in the first place.  If you want to verify the integrity of the files on your destination, a subsequent backup with CCC's Checksumming option is the best way to do that. If a file's modification data and size match those of the source file, but the checksum differs, CCC will make a note of that occurrence in the log file.

  • Harddrive Questions...

So my harddrive stopped working... brought it into the mac store, genius ran disk warrior, things didn't get any better, in fact probably just a little less better.
    1) what is the least expensive way to try and recover data; the harddrive has been removed in hopes that data can be rescued
    2) been looking on line for new harddrive. Probably have to by a new computer for editing anyway, but need something in the meantime. How does one go about purchasing a new harddrive & where do you look? How do you know which companies are reliable?
    3) Can i use my powerbook that no longer has a harddrive as a monitor for a desktop computer such as the g4 power pc? if so how?
    thank you...
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi tjk,
Thank you SO much for guiding me.
and Thank you for the prompt reply.
    Ok, answers/comments to your reply:
    1) Since the HD is out, I will give the HD enclosure a try... I take it you would recommend purchasing from the three places you mentioned in #2.
My harddrive when in the powerbook, first gave me the small grey screen with several language telling me to restart or reboot (can't remember) but I am learning that that is called kernal panic... there was noise. Everytime I would reboot it would give me the same message. I brought it to the genius bar and he suggested using Disk Warrior. He told me that there was a chance that it could work... but if it got stuck on #5 (something about slow...) then I wasn't getting my data back... when the "slow" note came up he cancelled the operation and sent me on my way. After that the computer would boot to grey w/apple then blue with folder ? then folder w/smiley then a small grey box would appear and everything would freeze. I would have to pop the battery out to turn off the machine. I removed the HD in hopes that it could be put in an external case and I could be directed as to what to do next.
**How should i store the HD now that it is out?
    2) I am not sure which model I have... 7200rpm was suggested but that was without knowing what model I have.
    3) this questions was regarding a powermac that was loaned to me that I was interested in using the titanium's monitor as a substitute for the chunky boxy monitor... that computer suffered a kernal panic last night just after I installed the Airport that was in the Powerbook that crashed. I got online fine, was running Software Update and surfing the net, then all of a sudden the small black screen came on telling me to restart my computer in several languages! Now that computer isn't booting and gets stuck at blue screen.!

  • Illustrator 10.0 file corruption + upgrade question

Hi. I'm using Adobe Illustrator 10.0 and have since it came out. However, it's had a chronic corruption bug that results in files becoming uneditable- I cannot save, rename, move or delete them, which makes things a little frustrating. I have amassed quite the collection of frozen files, and many many 'save as copy' files. I am told the 'file is open in another application.' I *have* uninstalled/reinstalled Illustrator, used this copy of Illustrator on Windows XP, Vista and 7 and encountered the same bug in all three, restarted in safe mode and still been unable to edit the files, altered the folder properties from read-only to not-read-only and it's had zero effect. The only way I've found to get rid of the corrupted files is a wipe/reformat, which seems a bit extreme.
Also, as 10.0 is unlikely to work well with the next computer I get, is it still possible to upgrade to newer versions of Illustrator? I work a lot in locations that do not have internet access, so using the online subscription option for Illustrator is unfeasable for me and I'd prefer to purchase a full download/hard copy. I've read on other websites that I can upgrade to CS4, but as even CS4 is 'old' by today's standards I'd be interested to know if that's still possible or if I've missed my window of opportunity.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I'm asuming this file here--> https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=1870&fileID=1879 is the one you're refering to? I'll give it a try.
And am I understanding you correctly that 'no discount from 10' means no discount for any new Adobe products, not just cc? If so, I'll look for a second-hand copy of an earlier version. Are there any concerns I should be aware of in purchasing second-hand copies of Adobe products?

  • Corrupted iTunes question

If this exact question has already been answered, sorry in advance.
Long story short, I turned on my laptop, which started up very slowly, for some reason, and then attempted to open my iTunes. It gave me a message indicating that it couldn't be recognized because it had been corrupted and it was restored to an iTunes with nothing downloaded.
So, here's my question: when I plug in my iPod (Nano, 4th gen) will it erase everything currently on there as it updates? If so (which I certainly don't want), is there anyway to restore the music that was in there?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Do you have your iPod set up in iTunes to "automatic sync"? If so, think very carefully before you decide what to do as this COULD result in removing all the music from your Pod. If you have it set up to "manually manage" your music, there is no problem : you can attach the iPod and nothing will happen until you tell it... BUT...
    1. Is it just the app itself / the iTunes Library database that were corrupted? If so, have a look for your music files, which should all (or mostly) still be there - look for an iTunes Music folder or, if your music was stored outside iTunes itself (you had 'copy tracks to my iTunes library when importing' UNchecked) then it will be safe where it was.
    2. If iTunes is behaving like a new fresh copy and has set up a new iTunes Library database file, then it won't recognise your iPod from before, and will prompt you to set up its Settings via the Summary screen the first time you connect it. Just don't tick "automatic sync" !
    3. You could get hold of software that allows you to copy from the iPod back to iTunes (Google "ipod to itunes" for a whole stack of stuff) - but only do this if you can't locate your music files.

  • Harddrive question on Laptop

I have a HP Pavilion Laptop, model dv6885se, it is now going on 4 years. The dv6885se has worked flawless for the complete time, but I have noticed lately strange issues...seems to hang on occasion. I believe the hard drive is going out, but all checks says no, however I want to replace the harddrive. I purchased a SATA device and restored my harddrive (via Norton ghost 15) to the new SATA drive, however it failed to boot...BIOS or ? may be the issue, don't know. So I want to go back to a drive that will work (ATA or IDE) I believe...tried to find the harddrives on the internet but it appears no one produces the devices any longer since everyone is going to SATA drives. Can anyone help me find a new ATA IDE drive?
    This question was solved.

    +1 on Chut's response -
If it was a desktop, where you've got some room for creativity (and add-in cards), I can see where you might have been able to clone an IDE HDD to a SATA drive, then replace IDE with SATA.  But with a laptop?
You mention that it's running Vista, so this also doesn't make sense.  IDE was phased out of laptops well before Vista, if memory serves me.
I googled HP dv6885se.  This unit has two HDD bays.  I doubt that either one is IDE, but I wonder if your original problems may have something to do with any confusion over which was the boot drive?  Either physical replacement, or cloning the wrong one?
This Cnet website sez the main drive is SATA.  I wasn't finding that basic bit of info on the HP support site...

  • External Harddrive Question

    Hey guys,
I'm thinking about buying an Ipod, but seeing as I have all my music on a separate harddrive, do I need to transfer my files to my laptop's hardrive in order to get Itunes/Ipod to recognise it or can I keep it on my separate hardrive?
    thanks a lot,
    LLBDTiberio

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As long as the HD is connected, iTunes should be able to music from it. (So yes) You would just go to file-->add folder to library in iTunes, find the drive and the folder with music and import it.
Then sync your iPod. Just make sure that the HD is connected whenever you sync your iPod.

    hi,
is there a cable that i can connect my usb external harddrive to my macbook by firewire?

Unless the drive also has a Firewire port, then no. There's no such thing as USB-Firewire adaptors.

The Broken HD is a Toshiba MK8034GSX ATA device.
I will like to have a bigger on - 120 GB or more and with 7200RPM in speed, if it is possible.
    On this site :
    Storage
I can read something about 100 GB 7200RPM SATA, but can I use this kind of HD ?
Then I have buy a new one, - Is the a guide how I clone the old to the new, and what I need to do it, cable maybe??
I have never trued this before..

    Hi,
Based on the following link, it's a 5400RPM, 80Gb SATA I HDD. Basically you can upgrade to a bigger (capacity) and faster HDD but this is an old machine therefore you have to update BIOS before buying new bigger and faster HDD. The following link shows its support page (including BIOS):
        http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?cc=us&prodNameId=1839197&prodSeri...
the following table shows a list of HDD's supported from day 1:
SATA I HDD is more expensive now, you can use SATA II (again, need new BIOS), it will run at SATA I speed.
    Regards.

  • New Harddrive Question.

I had some computer problems, reinstalled windows, and now I cannot manually manage my music. I'm giving a full run-down here if anyone can help.......
My harddrive started having problems, so I backed up my music, bought a new drive, and reinstalled windows.
I put my music back on my new hard drive, reinstalled iTunes, directed it to my music library, and waited while it added all my music.
After that, I connected my iPhone 3G to my computer, it did not recognize the library. I expected this, knowing full well that it can only sync music with one library. I said OK to the dialog that said it would have to delete my media files and start over.
Now, all of my music is gone from my iPhone, it is associated with this library, but I cannot manually manage files from within iTunes. I can drag the file to my iPhone, but when I get it over the music icon, a red X appears underneath and nothing happens when I let go of the mouse button.
Has this happened to anyone else ever? Is there a way to fix this? What went wrong anyways?

To each his/her own, but I've never seen much benefit with manually managing music. I've always made use of iTunes playlists, so I choose selected playlists to be transferred to my iPhone. If I want to remove a song from my iPhone that is in a playlist selected to be transferred to my iPhone without removing the song from the playlist, I have sync only checked songs and videos selected for my iPhone sync preferences. I uncheck the song in the playlist in iTunes followed by a sync. Or I can remove songs from a selected playlist followed by a sync to remove the songs from my iPhone, or add additional songs to a selected playlist followed by a sync to add the songs to my iPhone.
Since this did not work, try an iPhone reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so.
If no change after a reset, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes - from your iPhone's backup first and if no change, followed by restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.

  • Harddrive questions. Experienced opinions

Hey guys, I need experienced opinions. Right now I have my Boot drive partitioned in half. One half has my apps, the other half has my entire library of sounds, samples, 3rd party fx, etc...I haven't had much problems so far (and it's been like this for years), other than the ususal Logic bugs. I want to move my Library off that partition to an entirely discrete drive (7200rpm IDE) that's installed internally. This discrete drive used to hold my working sessions, but now I've got 2 external 7200rpm drives, 1 for sessions and 1 for back-ups.
Would it better to get the library off the partition and put it on a drive discrete from the boot, or is that partition okay to use for such purposes?
Also, is the firewire drive a stable way to work on sessions, or is an internal drive going to be faster and more stable? All drives are 7200rpm but I'm not sure about the speed and reliability of internal vs. external
    Thanks

    Hey Noah,
I don't have an answer for the libraries to discrete drive part of your question, but it does seem to make sense to put it on an internal drive of it's own. What I can bring to the table though are my own experiences with my g4. Through the advice of someone else on this forum I found MacGurus whom I purchased a SeriTek pci sata card from. Then I added 2 WD Raptor 10K rpm/74gb internal sata drives. After a total clean install of everything I must tell you (for the first time since I bought my mac) I experienced speed and stability. Of course it (the card) occupies a pci slot, but for the difference in performance to me it was totally worth it.
I did try to use my Glyph firewire external drive (before all of the sata items were added)to run my projects from but it didn't flow smoothly.I now use it for backup only!
    Hope this helps.
    cheers,
    kevin

  • Notebook BIOS Corruption Failure Question

I used a modded BIOS in order to use a dual wifi card with the original hard drive. It was working fine for a couple of months, and then I added a SSD with a fresh copy of Windows 7 64-bit. After several reboots installing drivers, I ended up with a flashing caplocks key code 2.  Luckily I still had the old hard drive intact, and I used it in conjunction with the B and Windows key to reach the EFI partition and recover the original BIOS. This time around, I installed the modded BIOS with the SSD installed, and everything once again seems to be working fine. My question therefore is: I would like to reformat the old hard drive and use it as a file archive. But what would I do if I lost the modded BIOS again? Is there a way to add the EFI partition to the SSD and will the same procedure using the B and Windows key still work? I see, someone also said you can unplug the CMOS battery for 5-10 minutes and the BIOS will return to the original BIOS. True? I should also mention there is a 100M and 400M partition on the SSD in addition to the main partition. Thanks for your help.

No help here for using Modded BIOS....you need to contact whom you got the modded BIOS from and get help from them.

  • Mercury elite pro firewire harddrive questions

    hi all,
i got my new drive up and had a couple questions. theres a tiny ziplock baggy with a 2" strip of clear plastic with a taped back and 4 tiny oval lumps on it. i dont see any place on the drive it fits? did anyone else get one and if so whats it for? also i searched for a way to confirm the drive is a 320gb seagate 7200rpm with 16buffer. i only found 298gb listed as drive size but no info about speed and manufacturer. is there anyway to confirm my drive specs so i can make sure i got the correct drive? thank you
    jeff

Those are the rubber feet for the 4 "C" clips that go on the drive. There are little indentations on those clips and the nubbins go in there to keep it from sliding around.
The reason you are seeing a size of 298GB is due to the difference between how computers see a GB as 1024MB and how HD manufacturers report their capacity as 1000MB.
Computers see a GB as 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes giving a total of 1,073,741,824 bytes. Multiply that by the GBs of the drive and you can see how it adds up.
You got a 320GB drive where 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes as stated by any manufacturer.
    Make sense?
