Corrupt iPod freezes iTunes/computer so I can't restore it

I used the restore option a few months ago to get my iPod working again (normal, stuck-on-stupid issues) and it's been fine. Until yesterday - I was listening to some music and it suddenly started skipping through all the songs and then refused to play anything at all.
I plugged it into my computer and I got the whole ..."iPod is corrupted... you may need to restore..." message. When I tried to restore, it said resource could not be found.
SINCE THEN... my computer has stopped even recognizing the device. It freezes iTunes (and any other programs that may be running) every time I plug in my iPod.
I've spent all last evening and all day today trying the Apple support suggestions step-by-step - including uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it & forcing the iPod into Disk Mode - and combing the discussion lists, but none of the suggestions I've found have helped b/c I can't actually get it connected to the computer without freezing everything up.
(I have run virus scans, tried different USB ports, etc. No change. I even have had to resort to unplugging the stupid thing by hand b/c it stopped responding to the safe disk eject utility...)
Found a website that suggests opening up the iPod and putting a shim inside to force the hard drive to "read"... but I'm afraid to kill it completely. Can't afford to buy a new one (or spend a lot getting it repaired either).
If anyone can help, I'd REALLY REALLY appreciate it...
Thanks!

First let me say I am NOT a pro but it sounds to me like your iPod's hard disk is ka-put. May I suggest next time you connect your ipod to your pc you let it sit like that for a while. I have found that if iTunes don't find what it expects to find it can spaz out for a while, so sometimes if you wait long enough (half an hour?) with it just sitting there you may get a more helpfull responce from iTunes. Also there is a key press combination on the iPod that will put your IPod into a diagnostic mode and offer a menu with a few options.
Sorry but I don't recall the keys and they differ from pod to pod.
Anyways good luck, I feel for ya...

  • Corrupt iPod freezes iTunes

    Basically I have this problem:
"I have a 160 GB iPod classic, that was completely full of music (about 20,000 tracks). Something happened today, and suddenly the iPod appears to be empty... there are no tracks listed in any of the menus or in the library. The ipod reads, however, as if it is full, with only 800 MB of space left. So the music is still there... it just seems to have become invisible to the iPod."
I read that only restoring the ipod can solve the issue, but it said that you have to go to iTunes and do it, but I cannot restore it because when I plug my iPod in it freezes iTunes and i have to end the task.
Is there another way to restore the iPod?

    Run a file system check/recovery:
    - Windows: Run a scandisk on it with "Automatically fix system errors".
    - Linux: run fsck and let it do the business.
    - Mac: fsck or whatever equiv is.
Now if it finds and fixes any errors iTunes should be able to pick up on it. If the iTunesDB got corrupted during this then you have two options. If that last program you used to sync with it made a backup of iTunesDB before modifying (like Winamp does) then it should be on the iPod somewhere. Otherwise iTunes restore and start resync from scratch.

  • IPod freezes iTunes in normal mode, will not restore in disk mode

Several days ago, I began having problems with my iPod. When I attempted to sync some podcasts to it, I got an error message saying "iPod cannot be synced. Error -48." I was still able to play the music on my iPod, but I would get the same error every time I connected it to my computer. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and restored it, thinking this would solve my problem, but when I put music on it it became really glitchy and the album art was messed up. I once again restored it and encountered the same problem. Eventually when I plugged it in, iTunes would freeze and become non responsive until the second I unplugged the iPod. I put it in disk mode and tried again. This time iTunes did not freeze, but when I tried to restore I got an error message saying it was unable to do so. I tried to manually reformat it through "My Computer," but when I tried it in normal mode it froze, and in disk mode it said it was unable to reformat Removable Disc (E:). I have tried repeatedly to find a solution, tried hooking it up to different computers, but it seems the problem lies with the iPod. I am utterly at a loss for ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just barely tried restoring it in disk mode again on another computer, and was told something new: "firmware is corrupt. Disconnect and reconnect." I've tried it twice and it tells me the same thing after taking a half an hour to download the update.

  • IPod freezing my computer

Whenever I connect my iPod to the computer, anything involving my iPod freezes. iTunes will not run, and if it is running it will freeze. I cannot eject the device properly, again because it freezes my computer. Once I do unplug my iPod, I get a message about not being able to stop the device, and iTunes will open. I can't access my iPod, because I am unable to open "My Computer", because that would require showing that my iPod is plugged in, which: freezes my computer. I mainly would like to just recover the files off of my iPod at this point. I don't mind buying a new iPod, but I do want my files. Please help
    Dell i4600   Windows XP

I left my iPod plugged in overnight, and when I came back in the morning, it still had not been recognized. I then tried to press the "Stop device" button so that I could eject my iPod, but again, nothing happened. When I unplugged my iPod, a message came up saying that the device could not be stopped, and iTunes unfroze.
I have had my iPod for just about over a year (the warranty expired probably two weeks ago), but I have not had this problem until very recently, and have no idea what could have caused it. I don't think that it is just taking to long to load, because If it were, it would have loaded overnight.
I have noticed that my iPod is basically acting like a "Pause" button for my computer. If I want to Pause my iTunes, I can just plug it in, and iTunes will stop until I unplug it. The same is true for the other 5 or 6 programs that I have been trying to use to recover the data from my iPod (PodUtil, xPodCopy, and CopyPod to name a few).

If you don't have a computer to which you have previously backed up using iTunes you will need to follow the instructions in the "Use recovery mode" section near the bottom of iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled

the songs on the iPod on Itunes are grey and can not be changed while in the library are ok, what happen?

Connect the device to your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Select iPhone, iPad, or iPod in the Devices list.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos".
    Click Apply.
Even when you have enabled manual management, you can still sync some content automatically. Select any content tab, such as Video, to enable automatic syncing for that type of content.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If you don't remember your iPad's passcode, you have to restore it as a new device.

The passcode is quite secure. It would not be worthwhile to have one otherwise.

  • 80 GB iPod Freezes Itunes...can't import songs

Hey everyone, I just got an 80 GB 5.5 Gen Ipod Video. Since all my files are in .ogg format, I used Anapod Explorer to convert them all to MP3 and transfer them to the iPod. My iPod now has about 72 GB of music on it, and I wanted to add this music to iTunes in order to add album art, perform SoundCheck, and make the files play gaplessly.
However, when I start iTunes (7.1.1) with the iPod connected via USB, (I have Windows XP) the program freezes, and I can't do anything except close it from the task manager. When the iPod isn't connected, iTunes functions normally. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with my iPod...it doesn't freeze, and it appears to be fully functional.
This is probably related: whenever my ipod is connected, the screen flashes the "Do not disconnect" warning. If I use the windows safely remove hardware wizard, the message remains on the screen, but stops flashing. the only thing I can do is pull it out manually.
What can I do? I can't restore the iPod, because the entire library of mp3 files on it are not on my computer, and it took me almost a week to transfer/convert all those files. Please help! Thanks.

Nope, that didn't work either. Initially, I thought it did...I tried opening Itunes before the Ipod was fully reinstalled, and because it wasn't reinstalled, Itunes opened normally and told me that the Ipod was corrupted and that I should restore it.
If I hit restore, it said something like the ipod software could not be found. If I didn't hit restore, and instead waited until the popup in the system tray said that my software was installed and ready to use, Itunes froze again. I guess it didn't freeze initially because the Ipod wasn't really registering at that time.
So, back to the drawing board. How do I resolve this problem?

  • IPod freezes iTunes when connected to computer

Whenever I connect my iPod to my Dell laptop iTunes freezes. When this happens, iTunes does not crash, it only freezes. During this time, iTunes will finish the song that it is playing (if doing so), but after the song finishes no further media will play. Also, the iPod does not show up on the sidebar of iTunes at this time (iTunes appears exactly as it was before connecting the iPod).
I am unable to eject the iPod safely at this point as the computer tells me that the system is using the iPod. If I remove the iPod from the computer, the error message: "Unable to sync iPod" comes up in iTunes. At the same time the iPod shows up on the sidebar of the iTunes, but it disappears as soon as I click "Ok" on the error message. At this point, iTunes returns to normal and is no longer frozen, even without restarting.
I have tried using a different computer and the same thing happens. I have also tried a different cable and the same exact thing happens.
Most recently, I have tried putting the iPod into disk mode, but still the same thing happens when I connect it to the computer.
If I go into My Computer (the same thing occurs in or out of disk mode) and click on the iPod, it will take me to the iPod folder, but My Computer will begin to Not Respond and then the only way to close it is to force close the window (ctrl, alt, del). If I right click the iPod, the drop down menu to access properties or to format the iPod comes up, but once again My Computer begins to not respond and I must force close it.
My iPod is an iPod Classic, 120 GB.
My computer is a Dell Laptop, Studio 1558
I have also tried on a Dell Desktop

OK, lets check out the iPod's hard drive...
*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

My computer crashed and I lost my itunes library. How can I transfer my music from my ipod back to my computer? (I did not back up my entire itunes library.)

Ipod syncing is not one way. You just have to know what to do...
I can see you use windows. Connect ipod to pc, but don't install or dont open itunes - dont alow itunes to sync automaticly). Then open explorer, enable hidden files, open your ipod (as you would any disc) open hidden file with strange names and copy all of them on your new hard drive. Then drag all this strange-named files in your itunes...woooo...now those strange names become your songs...it is magick
I you won't i can send you step by step guide...
    Take care.
