Note: Replacing the .itl with a recent copy won't help—evidence shows this happened a long time ago and has simply persisted.
Issue: The itl contains listings for 65,242 podcasts the files for which are not on my computer. I would like to get rid of those entries without losing information about my music.
How I know this: When I create a Smart Playlist (as shown below) which matches «Media Kind»«is»«Podcast» and «Kind»«does not contain»«stream», the list contains 65,242 items, some of which were added as long ago as 2011 and many of which have not been on my computer for many years (and software versions and system crashes). However, the Podcast folder is empty, and the only way to access the entries appears to be with a Smart Playlist. And, of course, an entry cannot be deleted from a Smart Playlist; if I make a normal Playlist by selecting them, all Delete does is remove them from the normal Playlist.
Also, if I right-click on any of them and choose "Show in Finder", I get the following failure notice.
Since the file(s) are no longer on my machine, I cannot "locate" them so as to delete them from the listing.
Can anybody suggest a solution? Thanks!

Resolution Steps: iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch library corrupted and showing ghost entries which will not play or music that is on the device in iTunes but inaccessible.

Issue: iOS Music application either has items listed in the library that will not play; or has an empty library but iTunes reports that music is present on the device and taking up space; or a combination of these issues coupled with the inability to resolve the problem through the standard resolution steps of disabling music syncing to remove all music and then re-enabling or by enabling "manually manage library" and removing the items.
Additionally, attempting to restore from a back-up does not resolve the issue and the default response from the Apple Support Community is to factory restore the device and treat as new device, resulting in loss of all settings and basically starting from scratch.
Cause of issue: Corrupted iOS device iTunes library (MediaLibrary.sqlitedb). This database stores the iTunes Media records and related information such as playcount, lyrics etc. It does not store information and settings regarding iOS Applications as far as I am aware so this should be safe.
Resolution Steps:
Perform a back-up to your local computer rather than iCloud if practical. This will be quicker in the event of issues.
Download a iOS device manager such as Phone View (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/) which will allow you to directly access the file structure of the device. (This will NOT require an illegal jailbreak to be performed!)
Enable the Advanced View mode so the entire disk structure is accessible.
Browse to the following file: iTunes_Control/iTunes/MediaLibrary.sqlitedb
Rename MediaLibrary.sqlitedb to MediaLibrary.sqlitedb-backup or similar
Hold down POWER and HOME on your iOS device until the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons.
When device has rebooted, connect to iTunes and synchronise it.
iTunes will detect that the Media Library on the device is missing and recreate it based on the items that it has listed in the iTunes synchronisation record for the device.

I don't have a large library of music on my iPhone 4s since I've only had it since Oct 2012, but since the update to iTunes 11 in early December, my album artwork has been all messed up. When I synch my iPod w. new MacBook Pro, laptop doesn't show which podcasts I've already listened to on the iPod. (My old MacBook did do that.)

I used to download new podcasts to my old MacBook, plug in my iPod, click the Synch button, and not only did the new podcasts get copied from the laptop to the iPod, but iTunes on my laptop would show which podcasts I'd already listened to, so it was easy to delete the old stuff, synch again, and the old podcasts would be gone from both the laptop and the iPod.
When I try to do the same thing with my new MacBook Pro (which I set up using the Migration Assistant to copy apps, including iTunes, from my old laptop), that doesn't happen: When I download a new podcast, plug in my iPod, and hit Synch, the new podcast isn't copied, nor does iTunes show which podcasts I've listened to since the iPod was plugged in the last time.
What used to be quick and easy is now cumberson and, because it's hard to remember which podcasts I've listed to and which I havened, error-prone!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The installer DMG will be in the Applications folder
I haven't tested this, but it seems somewhat at odds with this recent MacWorld article, which gives a method for "capturing" the Lion installer downloaded via the Recovery HD, and then creating a bootable installer volume from it.
Create a bootable Lion install drive for newer Macs
The article is meant for Macs that came pre-installed with Lion and therefore can't use the App store. The article describes a procedure to retrieve the Lion download not from /Applications but from a folder named "Mac OS X Install Data" which gets created at the root of the drive where Lion is to be installed. It's tricky, because normally that installer self-launches immediately after the download, and then deletes itself afterwards.
They distinguish this procedure from an earlier, simpler one that can be used if Lion gets downloaded via the App store - they reference an earlier article for that situation, which does involve retrieving the installer from /Applications. That method has been publicized in many places.
The inference for me was that the Recovery HD does not download anything to /Applications - otherwise the earlier procedure would work, and this new article would be unnecessary. As I said, thoiugh, I haven't tested anything.

List view not showing all podcasts

Guys, I have the annoying problem that podcast management by itunes and the podcast app are F'ed up.
Not too lobg ago I experienced my ipad greying out most podcasts that were downloaded and on my ipad, for no reason at all. it took me 2 days fiddling with settings and ended up having to set every sync to "on" and set donwloading to "all" and "keep all podcasts"
Now I'm experiencing the problem that the "list" view in podcast app, is not showing all podcasts, but the "thumbnail" view is (as far as I can tell...). Why is this and how can I fix it to make sure both views show everything?
I'm running iOS 7.0.6 and iTunes 11.1.5

It sounds like your Podcasts app is not showing your library correctly in the List view but Thumbnail looks ok. I recommend the troubleshooting in the article named:

Restart the app
Close the app and open it again.
Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
Update your device software and your apps
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
Update your apps:
Open the App Store and tap Updates.
If updates are available, tap Update All.
If asked, enter your Apple ID password. The updates will download and install.
You might need a Wi-Fi connection to update some apps.
Install another app from the App Store
If your installed app won't open, download and install a free app that isn't on your iOS device. This should reset your Apple ID authorization.
Remember to use the same Apple ID that you used to download the app that you're having issues with.
Reinstall the app
Remove the app from your device and reinstall it. Remember that deleting an app also deletes its data.
Delete the app.
Press the Home button.
Go to the App Store and download the app again.
Wait for the app to download, then open it from the Home screen.
If the download stops, you can resume it.

My Ipod is Classic is not showing any podcasts which I have downloads either on the library within itunes or on the ipod but is showing in the syncing section some 3300 plus podcasts but even after syncing they are noty showing on the library or on the Ipod am missing a step here as I have ticked all before syncing ??
Is this a software failure ?

I have sorted it myself!!
Ipod is now in the top right corner, last time I clicked on it, it ejected it but by clicking on the actual ipod icon then it brings up your ipod. I restored it to factory settings and synced all my music and it now works again. Hope this can help anyone who ends up with the same problem.

Tom at the Genius Bar told me that Option Delete would work. It does not.
I had to upgrade to iTunes 11.1.(I26) because it is required with OS7 on my iPod Touch (5th Gen). I have tried shutting down iTunes, then shutting down the entire system. This is the first in many visits that the Genius Bar gave me a solution that did not work.
This is a big awkward computer locked to my desk. I would rather not unlock it and then carry it through a shopping center to the Genius Bar if i can avoid oit.
When I installed iTunes 11.1, I discovered that Ihad to resubscribe to virtually all of the podcasts that I had previously been subscribed to. That was a surprise.

I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:

In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

AppleTV in itunes missing movies/tv shows/music/podcasts tabs

A friend's AppleTV only shows two tabs when in itunes: settings and photos.
My AppleTV (1st gen) shows all the usual tabs (settings/movies/tv shows/music/podcasts) and my settings tab has a Sync box where I can set my sync settings - my friends does not. All he has in his settings tab is the top box which states the name, capacity, software version and serial number.
He's using iTunes10 and his AppleTv (gen1) is on version 3.0.2
Any idea why he can't see what I can with mine? Any suggestions? His AppleTV shows up in iTunes fine, and is connected to the internet.

was your imac running OSX 10.5x, and is the new mac pro running OSX 10.6x? I wonder if the first generation of AppleTVs isn't properly snow leopard compatible? Try:

- Reset all settings

Not all content types are available in all countries - in each country Apple can only sell what they are licensed to (and in some cases what a country's laws allows them to). A list of what is available where is shown on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3599

IPod showing wrong podcast number

In iTunes (Windows), when I go to my iPod (Shuffle 4th generation), switch to "Podcasts" and tick "Sync Podcasts" with the default settings "Automatically include all episodes of all podcasts", it says "1 episode" on the right of "Sync Podcasts", though my iTunes Library says that I don't have any podcasts (which is right). After syncing, "On this iPod" shows no Podcasts too. Could anyone tell me how to correct this?

Just go to Settings > Store > and Sign Out.

Can't Find TV Shows and Podcast that I Downloaded

I just spent hours downloading TV shows and podcasts from iTunes directly on my ipad. The downloads all completed however now when I go to Video or Podcast, it says there are none.
How do I watch the shows I just downloaded?

Have you checked the Movies and TV Show tabs in the Movies App ?
Check the iPod app for Podcasts.
Check your iTunes account Purchase History to make sure the system says hey downloaded successfully.

Ghost podcasts appearing on smart playlist

When I create a smart playlist that should only have podcasts, a "ghost" podcasts appear then disappears when I am updating my podcasts subscriptions. I've tried downloading the podcast again and then deleting it, but it keeps coming back. I've also searched through my library, and these podcasts do no t exists. Please note that I am not using the Podcasts app.

I tried that and it worked. I already had the media kind as podcast and match only checked items set for the podcast. Your post helped in regards to unchecking the podcasts. I noticed that in the playlist that the podcasts that are checked that are actually not checked had the iCloud download symbol. I deleted all that had the iCloud download symbol and that took care of it.

Why Does IT Take SOOOOO Long To Get New Shows And Podcast Updates!!!!! It seems to me that it takes and unusually long time for TV shows to be uploaded to itunes and it takes FOREVER (VH1) to get Podcast updates. Also I notice that Vh1's Best Week Ever is a hit or miss deal. Some weeks it's on iTunes and some weeks it's not......why?

The iTunes store simply provides a link to the originating podcast server.
When the podcast owner puts a new episode up, it is available.

Keeping a tv show or podcast as "new" once I've watched it.

How do I keep a tv show or a podcast as new (in case I want to rewatch a show or listen to a particular podcast again) on my iTouch/Nano once I've watched/listened to it? Example, once I've listened to a particular podcast, the next time I plug in my iTouch (or Nano for that matter), the podcast/tv show is removed from my iTouch/Nano even though I HAVE NOT deleted the actual podcast/tv show from my iTunes library/podcast list/tv show list. In itunes right click on the podcasts or tv shows, there will be an option to mark as new, or mark as not new. Also a option to set auto delete, or don't auto delete.
You may want to change your sync settings for tv shows and podcasts on the ipod. Plug the ipod into your computer, click on the ipod in the left hand source pane. In the main itunes window, select either the tv shows tab, or the podcasts tab, and change your sync preferences to something that suites you better. Good Luck.
