Corrupt Library

Per other discussions on this forum I wanted to delete the iPhoto preferences file to see if it would correct some problems I'm having with an iPhoto library. When I use finder to view my user/library/preferences folder looking at the iPhoto plist file I see two files named "com.apple.iPhoto.plist". the icon above the name for one of these files is blank while the other has the appearance of a text list. When I view the info windows for both files one has "--" listed where the size should be and the other has "16 KB" for size. Under sharing and permissions one states "You have unknown access" while the other shows that the user (Me) has "read & write" privilege and everyone has no "access". I can delete one of the iPhoto.plist files but not the other. When I use "terminal" and look at the files in this directory I only see one of the iPhoto.plist files. Is this second "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" causing my system problems? How do I get rid of it?
I am having difficulty with this iPhoto database. Apparently it is corrupt. I cannot delete certain files and my efforts sometimes result in iPhoto hanging for hours when commanded to "Quit" and the only to get it to "Quit" is to use "Force Quit". I did purchase a license for iPhoto library manager and can use it to "Rebuild" the library but unfortunately the newly built library does not include the Photo Books and therefore is not of much use to me. I'd really like to get to the point where I can remove all the images from this library except the ones associated with the books and of course preserve the books as well. The only other alternative I can see is using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library to a new library and then delete the unwanted files and recreate the books from scratch. I thought Apple made bullet proof products but it appears that their stuff can become unusable just like PC applications.
Color me a "disappointed" PC convert.

Hate to disappoint you but there are no bullet proof products. Not even bullet proof vests are proof against a big enough bullet fired from near enough.
I don't recall any Apple marketing material that declares that nothing can go wrong with either hardware or software.
On computers, apps can have problems for many reasons, that's why every manufacturer on every platform strongly urges you to back up. Apple even include Time Machne for the purpose for free. So the most simple solution for your issue is to restore from your back up.
If you don't have a back up, then there's not much you can do to save the books, I'm afraid.
As to the mysterious plist file. That could be caused by a number of things. I would post on the Using Mac OS X forum for the version of the system that you are using for help with that.

  • Missing files - corrupt library after upgrade to 11.1.4

I updated iTunes to 11.1.4, and after launching, it looked like it was updating my library as it's done in the past.  However, this time, after an hour I realized it had not yet completed, and a dialogue box asking about creating an iTunes U playlist was on the screen.  I tried to do so, but it just kept repeating.  So finally I stopped it, and now I have an file marked iTunes library (damaged) and an incomplete library.  I am missing thousands of songs compared to the last .itl I have in Previous iTunes Libraries.
I thought when iTunes did an upgrade to the library it was supposed to make a backup? If so, and I did the upgrade yesterday, why is the most recent file in Previous iTunes Libraries dated from four months ago?
How can I repair the damaged .itl file, as the one iTunes is using now as, as I mentioned, missing thousands of songs now.
Is there any sort of script or utility I can use to figure out exactly which files are missing from the current .itl in my library?
    Thanks in advance.

No, you need to do the backup as part of regular computer maintenance and before you do any software upgrades.  iTunes moves the old library into the previous library area but perhaps your update failed before it did that.

Yes, there's one on the Dougscripts web site that will crawl through a library.  In yur case it's probably just as easy to drag the whole iTunes media folder to Automatically Add to iTunes.  Anything already in the library it will ignore.  Anything not there it will add.

  • Another corrupted library

The other thread was getting long in the tooth and I have some different situations.
I have installed iPhoto 09 on 4 different macs now with 3 out of 4 ending up with some level of corrupted library. All of the thumbnails appear okay. There are no warnings when started and nothing is obviously wrong until the thumbnail is double-clicked and the big grey exclamation point comes up. There is no obvious correlation that I can tell. The 20" has corrupted photos all through out the events, but never an entire event whereas the Macbook has just one event corrupted, but all of the photos. I have tried the command-option rebuild on all of them and only recovered 1 picture on the 24" iMac. All have Leopard 10.5.6 and all of the libraries are on the local hard disk.
    Types and results:
    iMac 20" core 2 duo - 200 photo library - 20 corrupted
    iMac 24" core 2 duo - 300 photo library - 2 corrupted
    iMac 20" core 2 duo - 100 photo library - none corrupted
    Macbook core 2 duo - 70 photo library - 6 corrupted
    iMac G5 - 2500 photos - too scared to install iPhoto 09 !!
Would love to know what is going on. I played with Faces on the uncorrupted iMac and love it.
    Thanks.......

Possibly you did not hear from anyone because you did not ask a question nor did you provide any information that might let someone who knows ONLY what you put in your message even make a wild stab at telling you what is going on
What are you doing on these Macs and how are you accessing the photos in the Iphoto libraries?

  • ITunes Corrupted Library/Crash Exception:  EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (0x0002)

iTunes gave an error of the effect "corrupted library", and said it created a backup/modified version.
OK, all songs still listed and everything seemed OK.
The next time I started up iTunes (version 7.3.2) it gave a
    Exception: EXCBADINSTRUCTION (0x0002)
failure. Now it ALWAYS fails on startup in this manner.
    (full crashdump at bottom)
    I've renamed ~/Music/iTunes and ~/Library/iTunes, and deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes*.plist
    I've manually reinstalled installed 7.3.2.
I've applied the version update to 7.4, which tossed up the new EULA properly and then immeditely started crashing.
Are there ANY other iTunes data files that I should try removing? Any other suggestions? I'd be perfectly willing to nuke my entire music collection (I have a backup dir) if it would restore iTunes, as I need it to calendar sync to my iPod.
    Other suggestions?

Drag the iTunes Library and iTunes XML files out of the iTunes folder and relaunch iTunes. If it launches correct then, try the Add To Library command, select your iTunes Music folder, and see if it will successfully add the tracks and then function correctly. If it still fails to launch, try logging into Mac OS X as another user (create one for testing if necessary) and see if iTunes will launch successfully there; that will tell us if it's a problem with iTunes or Mac OS X overall or a problem with your normal user.
    Hope this helps.

  • Corrupt Library Files, Disk Util: No Valid Packages, apps, plug-in probs

Darn, I could just kick myself. The current state of my computer is flashing me back to a nightmare from my pre-Mac days.
While backing up files to DVD I inadvertently/mistakenly/clumsily/stupidly (not sure) dragged what I thought was a copy of the Library folder I had created on my hd into Trash. When some of my apps stopped working and messages about missing internet plug-ins began to appear I realized I had screwed up. I ran Disk Utility a few times and either got the error message: "No Valid Packages" or a system hang. I attempted to repair the Library by moving files back to where I thought they should go and now have 2 Library files (syst and user) that have become a bit convoluted.
The good news is that I copied all of the files from both Libraries to my hd so I think I have everything saved. The bad news is that I don't know what goes where and I don't have a frame of reference, (ie the file structure) to work off of. For example, there is only one folder, (Library) inside the System folder and I can't remember if this is right or not. (System > Library > Automator, Caches, CFM Support etc.) My User Library looks intact but may have had some files shuffled around.
The way I see it, there are three alternatives or a combination thereof:
    1) Ideally, I'd like to be able to get the files where they belong and return the file hierarchy to it's correct state.
    2) Start more or less from scratch and re-install all of my effected apps, plug-ins, etc.
    3) I read about an archive function that uses the OS installation disk to return files to their proper places. Can't remember the exact name and haven't been able to find the knowledge base article.
TXIA for any advice you might offer that will help get me out this predicament.

Copying Library files is problematic because of permissions issues that arise when you then try to copy them back.
The procedure you're referring to is called Archive and Install which will install a fresh copy of OS X and archive the old system into a Previous System Folder. See the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Upgrading my Computer and have a corrupt library problem...

I am upgrading my Macbook Pro, which is almost 2 years old, to a newer model. I am currently using Aperture 1 but will have Aperture 2 on my next computer.
Now my current problem is a corruption in my library that causes Aperture to crash every time I restart it. The only way I have found around this is to delete the aperture.aplib file and rebuild my library every time I have to restart.
Obviously when I get my new laptop I plan on transferring all my files over to it. The question is, should I just risk it and see if upgrading the library to Aperture 2 on a new computer fixes my problem, or is there some way I could troubleshoot the problem before my new computer arrives. I've tried to locate the corrupted files with no luck and I've restored the library maybe 30 times by now.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom

I'd try making a second Library, then systematically exporting each Project form the old Library to the new one. This should at least diagnose which Project may be causing problems.
Obviously, you're going to need plenty of free HD space...

  • Do NOT use Dropbox for iPhoto backups - corrupted library

So after a couple of weeks of problem solving I've just been able to recover part of my 72gb iPhoto library.
My office was burgled a short while before Xmas so I was left to recover my stuff all from Dropbox which I have set to synchronise, together with iTunes. Problem is, Dropbox sees the iPhoto library in a totally different way to OSX, so when I grabbed the package, it wasn't coherent.
I've had to do a lot to try to rebuild, repair both the database and thumbnails, but there's still so many missing thumbnails etc and there appears to be an entire year missing. So I have a huge task of manually pulling images back in from the backed up (corrupted) package.
Can anyone tell me, what's the original folder? Is it Originals or Masters??
Meanwhile, how can I fix this?
Thumbnail is correct, when I click on file:
    I get this:

If all else fails and you can confirm that the Masters folder contains your  original source files you can try this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Rebuilding corrupted library after upgrade to iPhoto 6.0.5

I upgraded today to iPhoto 6.0.5 and experienced the problem that many people here have discussed -- missing photos, greyed out thumbnails and images, and so on. Just a small number of recent photos show up, out of about 15000. All the photos seem to be present in the iPhoto Library directory, so presumably (as I've discovered from reading the discussion here) the problem is corruption to Library6.iPhoto.
[*More detail, in case it's relevant: I first attempted to upgrade to a previous version of iPhoto 6 earlier this year. When I did this, it asked me something about updating the library, which I agreed to, and toward the end of this process iPhoto crashed. The same thing happened on repeated tries. So I haven't used iPhoto on this machine since then (I've used the version on my Powerbook instead, without problems), until today when I ran the update to iPhoto 6.0.5, which didn't crash but produced this new behavior.]
I have backups from last night. There is no Library6.iPhoto file in the backup IPhoto Library directory, but there is a Library.iPhoto directory (from March). Is there some way to use this to restore my library as it was? (When I try running iPhoto on a copy of the backup directory, the same thing happens as before.)
If not, what is my best option? Presumably I can reimport the files from the old library to a new library wholesale, but it would be good to find a method to preserve album structure, ratings, etc, if such a method is available.
Also, what is the best method to import the iPhoto Library from my laptop with its structure intact?
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Just to clarify. The file nor the tags are corupt I successfully added it to iTunes in april when I created it. It is the the exact same file I used and it worked in april. The file is an entire movie 2hrs and 19 minutes long with a bitrate of 768 for video and 128 for audio. it is 727,914,578 bytes long. I have also tried other large mp4 files created since then and they do not work. With a little more testing it appears that small mp4's work fine.
I wonder if it is a new size limit or a bug?

  • Note to Terence vis-a-vis corrupted library

    Hi Terence,
I created a new library. I'm dragging my photos from the 'originals' folder into the new library. I'm getting a pop up message saying 'Unreadable Files'. Almost a thousand files from the original library are now 'unreadable'.
"The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
And yet, all those files look just fine, were in yesterday's iPhoto Library before it got corrupted, and all open easily into Preview or Photoshop. Nothing wrong with them.
What might this be, do you think? Anything to do with the originals being on an external drive? Or do you see another problem here?
    Ben

    Ben
You will get that message if you're dragging from the active iPhoto Library to the iPhoto Window. However, as you're making a new library it should not arise.
Some things to try. Drag a folder of images to the desktop first. Then into the new iPhoto Window. See if that helps.
If it doesn't, open one of the files with Preview and save it again. Then see if it will import.
    Regards
    TD

  • Correcting a corrupt library or catalog

I have lightroom 1.4 and just installed the trial of lightroom 2. In 1.4 I was having problems with certain images changing into a cmyk type of image. As I edited further more images would be changed. This was only happening to those in my catalog. I asked about this problem on a different forum and someone said I should just start all over with a different catalog from scratch. I did that and it seemed to work. Then I started using the trial of lightroom 2 and it just happened again (with a different set of pictures). What can I do so this doesn't happen anymore?
Here's the stats of my computer:
Windows xp, service pack 3 (does the sp matter? I saw that it's for sp2)
    Intel 4 processor
    plenty of free disk space
    cd-rom
it's a dell except for the hard drive...that's one of my husband's old drives...wasn't big enough for him.
Thanks for any help you can offer!

As posted in the other thread, the utility Unlocker may be able to reveal which processes are preventing you from deleting the file and either close the locking handle or force delete the file. See also Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash for my most recent advice on pulling back an older library file.

  • Corrupted library points to /usr/share/emacs/...

Advice on fixing a corrupted iTunes Library would be appreciated. The symptoms are invalid links to certain files, such as:
    file: "TED Sirena Huang"
    link: iBook/usr/share/emacs/21.2/lisp/net/webjump.el
    file: AC: Ray Kurzweil
    link: iBook/usr/share/emacs/21.2/lisp/obsolete/auto-show.el
BTW, the URL of an Applescript that will find [or make a playlist of] all missing or invalid files would be appreciated. It is surely on dougscripts.com but I've not yet devisted the proper query.

Has anyone seen this type of library corruption before? It is a bit scary to have iTunes linking into System files - where only permissions prevents a user from accidental deletions.

  • Corrupted library

I have a corrupted aperture library that does't respond to repair or rebuild. I need to be able to view the files and transfer them to a new library.
When I "view package contents" the file still appear to be there....how can I take the old masters and pull into a new library??

So the repair or rebuild wasn't successful?
There is a procedure to manually go into an Aperture library and pull out bits to rebuild it. It is not to be done lightly because if it doesn't work you could be in worst shape then when you started You must have a full backup of the library before starting,
    This thread shows one procedure.
Pleae note I'm not recommending you do this and if you do it have a bacukup.

  • Corrupt Library - how to resync iPhone & iPad

My iTunes library is corrupt - I have some issues with podcasts not being deleted properly.
I know how to rebuild my library via the Apple Knowledge base article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451.
I know that that works and solves my issue. All my content is safe and is, after a bit of tweaking (podcasts must be resubscribed, iBooks relinked, apps transferred from iPhone, etc.), seen by iTunes.
But, and this is a major problem for me, it looks like after rebuilding my library, my iPhone, iPad, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle all think they are connecting to a new library and only offer to erase and resync.
That said, I have a few questions:
    1. I know I can transfer all my apps from my iPhone to iTunes. But what about app data. I'm assuming that will all be lost. Is that correct?
    2. Is an erase and resync my only option? I literally have hundreds of apps on my iPhone and several dozen on my iPad. Many of the apps contain important data and settings. Further, each device has many, many settings (email servers, passwords, wi-fi passwords, VPN settings etc.) and are setup exactly the way I like them. My only option is to start over from scratch?
I have the iTunes generated backups of each device. After I rebuild my library, is a restore of some kind possible? It didn't appear to be when I looked on a test run.
    Thanks for your help.

    vbeachcomber,
If you copied the entire iTunes folder in My Music over from the previous install your playlists should have been retained. There is no way to sync playlists back from the iPhone, but you can transfer purchased music if the computer has been authorized for your account.
Did your Windows XP Pro install disc come from a computer that included a web camera?
Regardless, our buddy Roy would probably want to see the Minidump file that should be created when you get a Blue Screen. Here are the steps to make sure the file is created:
    1. Right click on "My Computer"
    2. Select "Properties"
    3. Select the "Advanced" tab
    4. Select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button
    5. Select "small memory dump" from the popup.
Reproduce the Blue Screen. After the computer blue screens and restarts, look for
the MiniDump file. The original properties dialog where you set it up
to collect the minidump should tell you where the file will be
saved. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is
    called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
Attach the file to an email, along with a link to this thread and send an email to Roy.
Be sure to include the following information:
A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where your issue is being discussed
The username you are using in the thread
The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
A concise description of the issue you are seeing
The exact text of the error message you are seeing (if you are seeing one). In this situation a Blue Screen.
If you are sending in log or crashdump files, Roy will need the files themselves, not just the text of the file pasted into the email.
    Thank you,
    Nathan C.

  • Totally Corrupted Library

So, I just start iTunes tonight. I get some message about rebuilding my library. Wait... wait... wait... wait... hours later still waiting... so I finally press cancel and now half my songs including every song bought in the last 2 months is gone!
Dang. Apple have you laid off your entire quality control department or what?
Has anybody else had this problem?

Thanks, dude - I'll mark that as helpful, although I already read that article.
Turns out my corruption was worse than I outlined. I found files that had been renamed.
    This is what I've done:
I trashed the iTunes folder in the default location ~/Username/Music
I reopened iTunes and went to Preferences and set the location to my external drive array
I then went through all the files and "cleaned them up" (renamed files that needed it - created folders and put files in them - etc.)
Now, I'm going through those folders one by one and reloading them into the Library.
When I get finished I'll do what I SHOULD have been doing all along - making backups of that directory. Hopefully this will solve the problem.
    Thanks again for your reply
