Corrupt/missing file - xp won't boot up

Hello,
I am unable to boot into the bootcamped Win XP. I get the message <<Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
C:\windows\system32\config\system.
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair.>>
It won't boot into Safe Mode either, or into Last Known Configuration, or into any of the other F8 options. It won't boot up with the original Windows CD either (valid, non-OEM). I want to run Windows Recovery Console to attempt a repair.
Should I try through Bootcamp Assistant? If the Windoows CD is bad or unreadable in some way (which is what I suspect, judging by the scratch marks), then Bootcamp Assistant is not going to make a difference. Is there any other way to to repair Windows or run chkdsk?

Having got no reply to my post, I decided to do some tweaking of Windows myself, knowing that if I didn't succeed, I'd have to reinstall XP, which I was resigned to do in any case as a last resort. So I copied the missing/corrupt file in question from Windows\repair directory and using Paragon NTFS pasted it into the windows\system32\config directory. Bootcamp Windows now booted up, all seemed to be working fine, and I reinstalled the Apple drivers. After a restart, however, I found that neither the trackpad nor the keyboard were working (both of which were working before the restart). Restarted again, and got a hal.dll missing/corrupt error! Restarted again in safe mode, no hal.dll error, but also no keyboard/trackpad functionality. The only saving grace is that Windows now boots up properly in Parallels with no errors and everything working.
From whatever little I've researched on this, it seems Parallels can screw up the boot.ini file. Apparently it makes changes to boot.ini which are fine for running Windows in Parallels, but not in Bootcamp. Well, whatever...... I think I'll just have to do a reinstall, and hope I have better luck than you.

  • Corrupted music files and won't play on external speaker

My new Touch is starting more and more to corrupt some of the music files with pops and jitters and silence. It will also occasionally go into a mode where it will not play on internal speaker. It has no volume bar either. I have to reset all settings to get it back working. I noticed this started after connecting to a blue tooth system in my car. (Ford's Sync system) I don't know if the IPod is going bad or if the bluetooth connection caused problems. I won't do that again! Ford's Sync acted unhappy too. Any suggestions are really appreciated.

Note that the corrupted music is now when I am listening to head phones not on the Ford Sync. Looks like others are having trouble with Ford Sync?

  • Removed System Library files, Mac won't boot up!? Please help!

Ok so I moved to trash the Library folder from the Systems folder. I only had like 15 mb left on my iBook so I was trying to remove files. But then I thought it might be a bad idea to delete the library folder so I tried to drag it from the trash but it wouldn't let me. And then my computer started going really slow so I rebooted, but a error message came up and it said something like "we are hanging here" now when ever I try to reboot it shows that message. I tried loading it in single-user mode and typing in some code that worked last time something like this happened, but it wouldn't let me type anything in single-user mode.
Now I'm stuff and have no idea what to do. Please help!

Your only option is to reinstall OS X. The lesson of the day:
Never move, rename, or delete any system files or folders including the System and Library folders.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Macbook won't boot up pass apple logo, lion reinstall and preserving all settings, programs, and most importantly data

    Hello Guys,
Currently I am having a problem booting up passed the apple logo, have done alot of troubleshooting and looks like there is corrupted missing file or corrupted files on my macbook that won't allow me to boot up. Looking to do a reinstall of the OSx but preserving the original state of my macbook, basically just upgrading or re-installing the software. I am a professional photographer and videographer and have some very important media and projects on there that I cannot lose, none of the data can be deleted on the drive. And I did not back it up! When I do a re-install does it just re-install the OSx on top? and keeps all the original state of my macbook? I know there is an option for fresh install to and deleting everything, just confirming though that when I re-install the osx I can keep everything the same on my macbook and not lose anything? Also my macbook came pre installed with the software so I do not have the disk cd. Please any input would be appreciated. Also is this the right fix for this problem? any other suggestions? I am sure some people have had the same issue. Thanks

When I do a re-install does it just re-install the OSx on top? and keeps all the original state of my macbook?
Reinstalling will only replace OS components and basic Apple apps, such as TextEdit and Safari. All of your data, settings, and 3rd-party apps are left in place.

  • Satellite Pro A60 won't boot: config.sys missing or corrupt

    Hi,
I turned my computer off on Friday, went back to his Monday - and it won't boot up. I'm told that the config.sys file is either missing or corrupt.
I've tried all the usual methods - safe mode, last known good setting, OS etc but none of it works. The computer doesn't recognise that the recovery CD is in the drive, either.
As I don't have an original installation CD - the computer came with the software already installed - I can't try that either.
I don't particularly want to recover the whole system but if I have to, I can live with it. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
    Many thanks.
    Ronmac

I checked out the recovery disk and it attempts to work in another non-Toshiba computer and it attempts to loadhe local computer store (PC World) tested my laptop and told me the DVD/CD drive was faulty (they'd only replaced that a few months ago) and I need a new one. However, that wouldn't have anything to do with the original non-bootup error, as far as I know (config.sys missing or corrupt).
    The drive recognises CD perfectly.

  • Toshiba Satellite P200 - won't boot up. I'm scared of losing my files!

Hello. When I turn my computer on, it won't boot up. This appears on the screen:
    WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click ‘next’.
    3. Click ‘ repair your computer’.
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manuafacturer for assistance.
    File: \windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
    Status: Oxc00000e9
Info: windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or corrupt
I don't have the installation disc and don't want to restore to the factory settings as I will lose everything on my computer. Is there a way of getting it to the last recovery point? I haven't tried anything yet.
    Thank you!

Two ways of reaching the data if your hard drive is still alive, Sue.
    (1) Download a free CD that boots to another operating systems or to a preinstall environment and copy important files to external media. A popular bootable disc is Ubuntu. There's also KNOPPIX, Bart's, UBCD4Win, SystemRescueCd, and others.
    (2) Remove the hard drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and access it from another computer. To remove the hard drive, see the first two steps here.

It seems to me that you've an old Arch version. inittab is deprecated AFAIK.
What is the Arch iso version?
That would probably be mid-2012 at the very latest I think as that's when I remember completely moving over to systemd...
@SyXbiT: Are you using the current Arch install ISO?

  • Macbook Air won't boot - can I recover files this way?

I have a 1st-gen Macbook Air that won't boot.  Will the following work to access any files on the hard disk?
    1) attach powered USB hub to Air
    3) attach external USB DVD drive to hub
    3) hold down <option> and boot Air from 10.6 retail install DVD
    4) attach external USB hard disk to hub
    5) copy file from internal Air hard disk to external USB hard disk
    Will that work?
Can I boot from a USB DVD drive that's connected through a hub?
Do I have to use an Apple Superdrive or will a 3rd party DVD drive work?
    Thanks!

    Axe,
Does it see the drive at least in Disk Utility and just not a mount point? If Disk Utility won't even recognize the drive over the PATA connection it's unlikely you'd be able to use terminal to extract data. If it sees the drive and the mount point is grayed out this would indicate directory damage (usually). If it sees the drive and there's no mount point this is often an indication of partition corruption or worse, hardware failure.
Hard drives are "funky" when they fail, sometimes. I've seen them lock up the I/O bus and prevent any action on behalf of the startup sequence. Only when the drive is removed and hooked up to an external drive dock/sled will it mount. The problem, here, is that the 1st generation HD has this really funky PATA/ZIF connection and most standard drive docks/sleds won't work.

  • Mac Mini OS X Corruption - won't boot up!

Mac Mini OS X Corruption - won't boot up! Its Power Off Automatically after showing Mac Logo in start up. But I can able to detect the Harddisk and CD/DVD using Options.

Thanks, woodmeister50, that looks almost simple enough ... BTW - the Mac Mini didn't come with a DVD. No DVD at all, and no CD/DVD-ROM drive. I am guessing: nothing really says this out in the open that I have seen, so I have to guess that the "Recovery HD" is a set of files on the same Mac mini HDD with the OS X. Is the Recovery HD a partition on the Macintosh HD, separate ffrom the System partition (OSX)?
I think Recovery Disk Assistant must be an app, but I don't see it in my top-level Applications folder, in Finder (nor anywhere else). And I don't see it in system Utilities, either, in the Launchpad. (That Launchpad display really is beautiful!).  And RDA isn't shown in the Mission Control panel, or the Desktop.
Any ideas where I might find Recovery Disk Assistant.app file? Is it found on the Recovery HD (along with the OS X setup files)? And, is it accessed by booting into the OS X Utilities with Command+R?

  • Error -32810 occurred at The FieldPoint server initialization failed. Possible causes: 1. Missing or corrupt configuration file; 2. Failed to create callbacks. : FP Open.vi

I have two cFP-2120 RT controller. They both have NI-Serial RT2.5.6, DataSocket for LV RT4.2, NI-VISA 3.6, FP Drivers 5.1.0, FP VI Manager 3.1.0 LV RT 7.1.1 installed. But one same vi can run on one controller but not another.
the error message got when it runs on another controller is "Error -32810 occurred at  The FieldPoint server initialization failed. Possible causes: 1. Missing or corrupt configuration file; 2. Failed to create callbacks. : FP Open.vi"
I wonder by what it is caused?
    Thanks

    Hi Matthew,
As mentioned previously, this KnowledgeBase article may be of some help. Also, if your code is being run on an embedded controller and then a network controller (not embedded), you will need to run the program differently. On the embedded controller, you should deploy your VI in a Project Explorer or programmatically (as described here.) However, you do not need to deploy the program to a network controller, but simply run the VI.
I would also suggest creating a new .IAK file. Do you still see the same error? Also, double-check that the software installed on the controller matches the software installed on the host PC. If you have any file paths associated with one FieldPoint controller, ensure that you are changing them to match the second controller.
Please keep us posted on your troubleshooting steps. Have a great day!

  • HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

    Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
    Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.
    http://www.twocanoes.com/
Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.
    http://www.paragon-software.com/downloads/demo.html
I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • I followed your help directions on "Corrupt extension files" under "Unable to install add-ons", foolishly deleting the files you told me to. Now firefox won't open. I tried reinstalling firefox but it still won't open. Now what do I do?

I was trying to install the SEOQuake add on. After clicking install Firefox would hang up saying the script had timed out and asking if I want to stop it or continue. Didn't matter which option I chose nothing would happen. The only way to stop it was to close Firefox and restart. Tried restarting the computer. Still wouldn't install. Tried installing the Outwit add on and got the same error leading me to conclude it was a problem with Firefox, not the add on. I found this help page <http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons?s=addons+won't+install&as=s> and did everything it told me to. Finally at the end I got to "Corrupt extension files". I foolishly deleted the files you told me to and now Firefox won't even start! I tried reinstalling Firefox and it still won't start. Tried restarting the computer. I have no idea how to get back to where I was let alone install the add ons I wanted to install. Please help. At this point I'd just be happy to be able to get Firefox working.

See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)<br />
