Corrupt/Non Viewable Canon Xs .CR2 Raw files

Hi All,
I am having issues with my importing/viewing my Canon Xs .CR2 Raw files. I import them into Aperture and they do not show up correctly. I get either a black or a green and magenta static with lines for an image. I am currently running both the latest Aperture Version (3.1.1) and Digital Camera RAW (3.5.0). I have been searching for three days and cannot find a solution to this problem. I have found a few other people having issues as well. Here are some snippets/links from/to these posts:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2667652&start=0&tstart=0
“The latest Aperture 3.1.1 update breaks Canon's "Medium RAW" compatibility; Aperture used to be able to read the "Medium RAW" CR2 files before this update, but not anymore. Also, updating to the latest "Digital Camera RAW 3.5.0" does not solve the issue.”
If anyone can please help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

  • Unable to open Canon 7D CR2 raw files in Photoshop CS6

    Hi Folks,
I have been trying to open Canon 7D CR2 raw files in Photoshop CS6 (Extended) (Windows 8.1) but I'm always getting the error "Could not complete your request because the file format module cannot parse your file".
I installed the Camera Raw plugin ver 8.8.0.397 today. Did this initially by downloading and running the CameraRaw_8_8.zip available here Camera Raw plug-in installer. Still got the error.
Went and did the Check Updates in Photoshop and updated the Camera Raw (and other components) but STILL cannot open the CR2 files.
I can see the thumbnails in Bridge but when I double click to open them in Photoshop, same error.
Cannot seem to get past the "Could not complete your request..." error.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Doug...

    Hi Folks,
Thanks for your replies and assistance so far, very much appreciated. Its a very frustrating problem... this should be one of those things that just work.
I have uploaded two sample pics taken with my canon 7d. If you get a chance, could you please try opening these images to see if they work on your machine.

I have tried opening them on both my office and home computer but neither of them work.
Hmmm... could it have anything to do with the lens (Canon Macro Lens EF  100mm1:2.8 USM)
    Many thanks!

  • Why can't I download Canon S100 CR2 RAW files into PSE 10?

I am using PSE 10 with a Canon S100 camera. I am successful in downloading all of my jpeg files and RAW CR2 files from my older Canon Rebel, but not with the Canon S100 CR2 Raw files.
When first downloading from the Canon S100 camera into PSE 10 and later doing them manually, I receive the following messages:  Nothing imported...files are not supported file types or alread in catalog.  File damaged or in a format that cannot be included in the Elements Organizer.
These problems files, by the way, were automatically added to my Window's My Pictures catalog and are perfectly fine.

Thank you for the info. It worked great, once I was
able to get around a second problem that prevented updating
from within the PSE 10 application (error U41M1C212). That
problem was solved by disabling the MS Virtual WiFi Miniport
Adapter (located in the Network and Sharing Center control
panel). It just goes to show me once again, how complex
computer apps are and how much we all have to rely on each
other to get anything to work properly (frustratingly
enough, since the companies we paid good money to for
their problematic software are not very helpful). Thanks
    again.

  • Canon 5D CR2 RAW Files Have Visible Artifacts

There's a digital dithering pattern that's clearly visible on CR2 RAW files even with no adjustments in Aperture. Here are two example screenshots from Photoshop. The first is an 800 ISO image and the second is a 50 ISO image. I shoot RAW + JPEG.
In the first, the JPEG from the camera, zoomed at 400% (top) and the equivalent JPG export at quality "12" (lossless) from the RAW image in Aperture with no adjustments (bottom). This is just the RAW, exported to JPEG at lossless 8 bit, same area at 400%. I experimented with 16-bit TIFF and PSD exports as well and the dithering pattern is the same:
    http://www.pipsqueak.com/imagehosting/ApertureJPGBug.jpg
In the second, I took the original RAW, converted it to DNG format (I have to in order to use Adobe Camera Raw on CS 1) and imported into Photoshop using ACR "camera default" settings. I show that image at 12.5% at the very top and a detail in a window at 400% in the middle of the stack. The bottom image was created by bringing the RAW into Aperture and, without making any adjustments, exporting it as a 16-bit Photoshop file.
I picked the blue area because it's easy to see the dithering pattern in a solid color. But it's there across the image.
This is not just a high ISO or highly adjusted image problem. This is an EVERY image problem, at least with Canon 5D CR2 files.
    http://www.pipsqueak.com/imagehosting/ApertureExport_Bug02.jpg
I've taken the same file, processed it using Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop, exported it as a 16-bit PSD file and brought that into Aperture. Exports from that file are flawless. So I conclude that this has to do with the way that the OS is converting RAWs from the Canon 5D (or CR2s generally).
Can this be a priority to fix? If Aperture can't export high quality images, its other truly admirable features will be for naught.

Ian wrote a really good description of what RAW files are:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1303439&#1303439
Since the RAW file is encoding the chip information, and the two 1D2 and 1Ds2 cameras use different chips (they do, don't they?), then it's conceivable that they could have different results in Aperture.
On the other hand, I thought that CR2 files had the same underlying file structure, so it's strange that they encode differently.
Might it be possible to take some kind of test image with both cameras that is basically identical and has some areas that are dark? It would be interesting to compile a list of those cameras that have conversion issues and those that don't. I know the Canon 5D conversion is not so good, and that there's an Olympus problem (although I don't remember the camera). On the other hand, there are a number of Nikon users who seem pretty pleased with their conversions.

  • Opening Canon 6D .CR2 raw files with CS5 Extended

Can't open Canon EOS 6D raw files with CS5. What is the minimum I need to do to open Canon  EOS 6D .CR2 raw files in Photoshop CS5 Extended version 12.1 x64, and Brige CS5 version 4.1.0.54, and Camera Raw version 6.7.0.339? I would rather not have to go through the hassle of first converting all files with the Adobe DNG - is there another option? Can I upgrade my Adobe software?

Im having the same problem, and i use CS6
Do you know if CC can open 6D .CR2 files?
    Thanks!

  • "Canon SLR EOS 40D"  *Aperture and Canon's CR2 RAW files not supported.*

    Hi,
I just started playing with Aperture, and with my brand new *Canon SLR EOS 40D* camera. One problem, Aperture is not recognizing the RAW file format. I am using RAW Fine**-L. Even with that it doesn't even see the JPG shots in Aperture. Went to the Canon site and it shows CR2 format. IPhoto 08 sees the JPG files just fine, It also sees the RAW files just doesn't know what to do with them. I know that RAW files are not supported on IPhoto 08. The camera is only been out a few months, but still lost on why Aperture doesn't support the format. Maybe I am missing something. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance....

For some reason or another Adobe Photo Shop 7 is no longer supported in Leopard. When you lunch Photo shop 7 in Leopard. You get "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a Program error. Photo Shop will now exit." even if you reinstall the program, still you get the same error. Photo Shop 7 is Not the latest and greatest, but in most cases, that is all you need. Not sure if they plan on a fix, so for now I put that program on a shelve.
    Hope that helps

  • Canon S95 CR2 raw files not recognized

I just bought my wife a Canon S95 specifically because it could produce raw files. I just tried to import her first pictures using Lightroom 3.2 and CR2 files are not supported. Silly me I did not check the supported camera list. The S90 is there but not the S95. When do you think Adobe will get around to supporting this camera?

    Hi Amir

thanks it worked great with a Mac as well, within terminal. I added overwrite to remove the original ( I had already made a copy)

  • Aperture 2 won't recognize Canon G10 CR2 RAW files

The Canon G10 just came out and I got one!! But Aperture will not recognize the CR2 files that it makes. Any idea how to make this work?

If you can get your hands on a copy of Canon's Digital Photo Professional it may include the proper converters that you can use for now.
For EOS utility to run the camera must be connected and running and I'm not sure the P&S cameras are recognized by that utility.
I'm having trouble with G9 CR2 files on Aperture 2.1.2. When I import them they come in at 1:1 aspect ration meaning the preview is forced to fill the preview screen so all images look a little wide and verticals look really, really stretched out.
When I go in and selected Apple -- Camera Default in the adjustments palettes it pops into the proper 4:3 ratio.
Any way to get that as the default? I've tried selected all and hitting the Camera Default but only one image at a time is updated. Driving me crazy

  • Aperture 3.1.1 ignores color settings in Canon 7D .CR2 Raw files

    hi there!
i have a problem with the import of pictures taken with my canon 7d.
when i take pictures using color presets e.g. black/white, aperture ignores those completely during import. even if i open them in preview.app the settings are not applied. if i open the same picture in photoshop cs4 it will be displayed correctly in b/w.
neither the updated of the raw processing (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3946) nor the 3.6 raw update solved this problem for me.
    how can i fix this?
    thanks,
    paul

hmm, this behaviour of aperture is a bit odd.
i understand the approach but if i shot a few thousand images on a journey, i don't remember afterwards, which image was supposed to be b/w. this leads to a situation where i +have to post-process+ images. i would expect aperture asking me if i want to keep attached color settings instead of ignoring them!
and, yes, i'm sure that this image is a raw. photoshop interprets the color settings correctly.

  • Why aren't my .CR2 RAW files opening in Elements 9.0 from my Canon Mark III 5D?

I am super confused as to why my old Canon Rebel CR2 (RAW) files have always opened in Elements 9.0, but now my new camera (Canon Mark III 5D)'s RAW files are not opening? Thanks!

    You have two alternatives:
    (1) Upgrade to PSE 11. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.3
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.3
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • CR2-RAW files & Elements 7

I have Elements 7 (not premium) and cannot bring up Canon's CR2-RAW files for post processing. I read where there is an update but the threads that start to take me in the direction of update for it specify for "Premium" version of Elements. Can anyone help or give me advice. Perhaps if buying Elements 10 assures me that CR2 files will work it may be worth buying. Open to opinions. I have a Canon T2i camera.
    Thanks
    James.

Just spotted you use a T2i
That camera needs at least ACR 5.7 or 6.1 both of which can not be installed in PSE 7.
You would need PSE 8 or later or you could download the free DNG converter. The converter will take your CR2 files and convert them to DNG raw files which can be read by PSE 7.

  • Corrupt CR2 RAW files

Has anyone found a fix for CR2 RAW files being corrupted? I have read all the thread postings I could google on various forums and can not seem to find any solid fix to the problem.
I purchased the Canon 400D for my trip to Asia and shot over 1500 photos, almost all in RAW. I transferred 90% of the images onto CDR and DVD media to make more room my Sandisk Extreme III 4gb card. Of the 1500+ photos, 150+ of my images remain corrupted.
I am posting this in hope that someone has found a fix.
    Hardware:
    Canon 400D Xti Rebel
    Sandisk Extreme III 4gb
Atech Flash Technology "Pro-Gear" USB 2.0 card reader
    IBM/Lenovo Z60M desktop replacement
    Software:
    Canon's DPP (Digital Photo Professional)
Microsoft Camera Raw Viewer (does not work with CR2)
    Adobe CS2 with latest upgrades
I filled my CF card up four times during the duration of my trip.
    Listed in order:
    1 - 6 CDR's
    2 - 1 DVD
    3 - 3 CDR's
4 - straight transfer from CF card to my Z60m laptop
Of the four times I DL'ed images, the first 4 CDR's were the only folders that did not carry any corrupted files. All files were DL'ed onto a PC using my Atech card reader locally before burning.
Of all the images I took, I noticed a total of about 2 to 3 images that are shown to be corrupted when played back on my camera. I reviewed each and every file anywhere between 1 to 5 times on my camera prior to transfer and they all looked fine (maybe the camera plays back the embedded jpegs?). I would delete all images using the in camera function. I formatted the card before each fresh shoot. Originally thinking it was a CD/DVD transfer issue, that would not explain why some images from the last batch off the CF card (straight from CF card to reader to laptop) were also corrupted.
Here's my workflow (I'm new to RAW): I used Canon's DPP for a day and all the thumbnails displayed perfectly. Like CS2, I believe the software first displays the embedded jpg Thumbnails before loading the actual RAW preview. I did NOT notice any corrupted images based on the rendered thumbnails but I have not verified all my images first before making a strong claim to this.
I have not installed my copy of CS2 at this point and anxious to use Adobe Bridge, I did so the following day. After playing with some images, I began to notice some weird lost of colors in some of my thumbnail preview images. I attempted to open these files and DPP gave me a corrupt image notification. I tried it in Adobe Bridge and the images opened only to show me that either the image had part of it white, black or various colors. Some images were entirely black.
On the advice of a forum poster, I used Fastone Image viewer to see if I can save the image as jpegs and it worked but the jpeg was a smaller both in file size and dimension; not a complete lost at least. I did not recall having any image corruption with the exception of about 3 images (at most) which was witnessed on the camera itself during playback which prompted me to think that there was a bad sector on the CF card.
    Notes:
    - One forum poster suggested that Microsoft's RAW viewer were causing problems. Originally, I attempted to open one or two CR2 files and MS RAW viewer launched but gave me errors. I DL'ed the latest version and installed it and it will also not work on CR2's. After reading the MS page on the RAW viewer, it shows that CR2 was not supported yet. I then uninstalled the proggie after reading the posting.
    - Another forum poster suggests that it is a bad card reader. I will attempt to transfer images directly from the camera going forward.
I'd hate to have this happen again but can not fathom why the problem will not reiterate itself with more RAW transfers going forward. Hopefully, someone has a good solution. Thanks. -Will

    Rita,
The process for determining what is causing the files to be corrupt can be a tedious one depending on the following:
    1. Can you review the images on your camera's LCD screen without problems? If not then the problem is most probably either a corrupted/faulty memory card or a faulty camera. If this is the case then your best bet at recovery (of sorts) is to use a program such as BrezzeBrowser from BreezeSys to extract the embedded jpeg versions of the corrupted RAW files from within each RAW file. Chances are, you won't manage to actually repair the corrupted RAW file but the jpegs are better than nothing.
    2. If the images review ok on your camera but are corrupted when viewing on your computer and there seems to be no other problem with other files on your computer then it may be either a faulty card reader or usb/firewire cable between the card reader and the computer that is the culprit. Try the card reader with a different cable and also try a different card reader to determine the cause of the corruption.
    3. If your symptoms are that you get different files corrupting over time when viewing them on your computer then the problem may be any one of either failing RAM memory, hard disk, hard disk controller or IDE/SATA hard disk cables. This is where the troubleshooting can be pretty tedious testing then eliminating each item from the list of suspicious pieces of hardware. Try the card and card reader on an altogether different computer to see if the files transfer correctly to that computer. If so then the problem lies with your computer hardware. If you haven't already done so at this stage, backup all your important data immediately (hopefully you keep backs anyway).
    Hope this helps.

  • Lightroom 3 Corrupting .CR2 RAW files on import

I have never used RAW files before yesterday.  About to shoot a wedding in a couple days so desperately need a fix or at least some advice for a workaround.
    Here's my hardware list:
    Canon 7D
SanDisk Ultra II 2 & 4 GB CF cards
    Windows 7 64x
Internal card reader, not some flimsy USB thing
    Lightroom 3
    Problem:
After importing .CR2 RAW files using Lightroom 3, not Bridge, I found that some (not all) of the images appear to be corrupted.  On the camera they look fine.
For a short moment, in Lightroom, they look fine, but then after clicking the thumbnail they instantly develop strange corruptions, like pink/yellow/opaque static.
This is not one of my photos, but the corrupted image looks just like this: http://thekuipers.org/images/IMG_2279.jpg
Used some advice and downloaded Fast Picture Viewer, which allows me to view the .CR2s in the folder I imported to, and MOST of them look fine now.  Reimported to LR and now only like 8 of 200 images are corrupted.  They still export to .jpg as corrupted.
I had formatted my CF cards immediately after importing, only to find the corruptions after.  Using Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery to try to reimport manually the residual data from CF cards.  Will know if that works soon.

From previous posts on this forum there are several things that can cause this type of corruption on import; faulty, CF cards, card reader, cable, and RAM.
On my system it turned out to be faulty ram. Since changing my ram I have not experienced any further problems.

  • Canon CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop CS4

I'm using a Canon EOS 600D (aka EOS Kiss X5), Photoshop CS4 (ver 11.0.1) with Camera Raw 5.7.0.213.
CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop, though the thumbnails are clearly visible and open in Windows Explorer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Yes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4.  I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.
