Corrupt OS X Install Partition

Well, today I defragged my HD with drive genius. And of course, I now have a laptop that I can't start up in OS X.
I just have a few files that are new since my last backup that I really would like to get off my HD before I do a fresh install.
I tried verifying and repairing the disk with drive genius, then I tried doing it with disk utility off the OS X install disk. I tried starting up in target disk mode with a firewire cable to another laptop, and I got the firewire logo on my screen, but the HD did not show up on the other computer. When I did it with the OS X install disk in my broken laptop's drive, THAT showed up on the other computer in target disk mode, but definitely no HD.
I also tried starting up in my Windows partition and accessing the OS X partition using MacDrive, but it said it was corrupt and unreadable.
So... it's time for me to come here for help. Any ideas at all as to how I can recover some files?

What actually happened when you attempted to repair using Drive Genius and Disk Utility, Eehatu? Were they able to see the drive , but not able to repair it, or could they not find it all? If they could find it, what sort of errors did they report?
Data Rescue3 will almost certainly be able to recover the files for you.
The current version of Alsoft DiskWarrior MAY be able repair the disc.
What version of Drive Genius were you using? Drive Genius 2.2 is the earliest one that you should use with Snow Leopard, and it has subsequently been updated to 2.2.1.

Let's try a repair install of iTunes first.
Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair". If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", click "Change" and then click "Repair".

  • This copy of iTunes is corrupted or not installed properly ? Help

    Hi,
After starting up iTunes I received en error message: "This copy of iTunes is corrupted or not installed properly". So I downloaded the latest version via apple but it fails to re-install because there is already a later version of iTunes on my mac ? So iTunes is corrupted, I get the advise to reinstall but I can't because the install prog refuses to do so. Please help !
I am running OSX 10.7.3 on an intel MacBookPro with the latest iTunes installed (as far as I know).
    Thanks in advance,

Not to worry. The package downloaded by Software Update seemed to be b0rken.
    I fixed it like this:
    Download iTunes 9.0.2 here:
    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iTunes9/061-7197. 20091029.tnz9f/iTunes9.0.2.dmg
That disk image unpacks an .mpkg (meta package) whereas Software Update downloaded a folder containing packages. Looks like it just unpacked on download instead of install.

  • This Copy of iTunes is corrupted or not installed properly

Ran software update and now iTunes shows as v 9.0, but when I run I get the error; This copy of iTunes is corrupted or not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes.
I've gone to the download link on Apple's iTunes web page. The 82.8MB file is downloading as 110MB and when I double click on the .dmg file to open, I get a warning: The following disk images couldn't be opened iTunes9.dmg error -4960.
    Anyone else?
