  • Corrupted thumbnails??

I use Lightroom 2 to import photos onto my Mac Pro (Snow Leopard OS), then move to Adobe Bridge (most current version) to browse and choose which to open into Photoshop CS4. On a recent shoot, about 5 to 10% of the images (taken on three different compact flash cards) from my Canon 5D Mark II had corrupted thumbnails in Bridge. They either showed no image, just the CR2 RAW logo, or the image showed with a significant portion of it blocked by random colored vertical and horizontal lines. The photos all were fine in Lightroom. I closed Bridge, threw away the cache, and reopened and all was well.
My question is what is going on? Getting rid of my cache is a pain, because I have to wait many minutes for many files to reappear in Bridge. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again? Could it have been related to the fact that I imported 700 or so very large files (RAW files from a 21 megapixel camera are 25 to 30 MB each)? Thanks!!

Bridge, threw away the cache, and reopened and all was well.
You first could have used the option to Purge cache for folder using the
Tools/cache menu instead of deleting the whole cache folder.

If you only use LR to import your files why not use Bridge for this?, You
can add several options for it in Adobe Photo Downloader that is in Bridge
(get photo's from camera). Explore the advanced option window.

It might have been a corrupt folder but it might have also been something
else. I tried using LR for import files (include to convert as DNG as I'm
used to for all my Raw files) but have no problems with viewing them in
Bridge. Personally I prefer the renaming options in the Photo Downloader but
    that's my opinion )

I really doubt that, (I have the same files, did not try this amount but do
work with this amount, and more in Bridge without this problems) unless you
did something in between with removing card from reader in an incorrect way
or closed one of the apps during caching but still can't imagine that to be
the cause, or if you copied the files manual to an other location, etc. etc.
Nevertheless you might consider to refresh the preferences for Bridge (hold
down option key while restarting Bridge and choose reset preferences)

  • Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS has compatability with those files.

Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS had compatibility with those files added long ago. Am I missing something?

I agree Terrance. However, I was able to copy other large batches of other files (my music for example) without any issues. The issue only showed up when copying iPhoto's library and/or the photos themselves. This was repeated 3 times; I copied all my other files to the drive then it unmounted on iPhoto. And, as I said, again when I started with a fresh reformat and just iPhoto. That does not seem like hardware to me if it is only happening with one set of files.
I have managed to get the iPhoto library to work on my other external drive. It wanted a rebuild twice and a thumbnail rebuild once. I am now attempting to copy it over to the new HGST internal drive.
Anyone have a suggestion for alternatives to iPhoto? I have aperture, maybe I will try that. But from what I understand, it just shares the same library as iPhoto.

  • Importing Tiffs - FCP unexpectedly quits

I have been importing tiffs at 100 dpi and 1000 pixels (either landscape or portrait depending on orientation). Every time I load into the Viewer, FCP either unexpectedly quits or I get the gray screen of death.
I have tried different formats (png, jpeg). I have tried different sizes (40 dpi, 72 dpi). They are definitely RGB because they are screen caps. We just installed more RAM, going from 1.5 Gig to 2.5 Gig. The only thing that works is 72 dpi and fitting to screen (either 720 wide or 540 high).
What could the cause of this be? Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need more RAM?

I don't care what your IT people think as ALL the general computing IT people I've ever dealt with (and I have dealt with A LOT) don't have the imagination to really understand what is going on in a graphics driven computing environment.
    sooooo,
TAKE OUT THE RAM and try again. If it still crashes the IT guys might be right, if it works, you can lord it over them until the the cowboys win the superbowl again .... (which will be a very, very long time!)
    keep at it!
    x
edit: I really am this grumpy but I will explain: when you use images, you are likely pushing into realms of your new ram that other applications do not require and therefor will not access. This is the simplistic explanation of why FCP may crash while other progams seem to run unaffected. Launch Activity Monitor and examine how much ram is being used, how many page swaps are taking place, etc to get a feel for the relative demands of each application.
IT people often do not understand Photoshop, FCP, AE etc system requirements. They really have no clue as to the demanding nature of image manipulation and the amount of RAM necessary to serve the application(s). Do you have more than one open at the same time?

  • Two Different Imported TIFFs Show The Same Image in Premiere Pro

I noticed sometime ago that some imported TIFFs with alpha channel are not showing the correct image. Recently I upgraded to Premiere Pro CC (for PC) to see if such issue was solved, however it is not.
Basically just importing the TIFFs into the project panel results in Premiere showing the same text even though the actual TIFF files contain different text. This is quite bizarre. No other software (including FinalCut Pro) displays such odd behavior.
I have uploaded the two TIFFs that replicate this issue consinstently here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2IT1EAcyLlBZXRlMDkxNzY3d1U&usp=sharing
To replicate, just create an new empty project and import these two TIFF files. You will notice that both show the same text within Premiere while outside they indeed show the different data.
Anybody has any clues on why this is happening and on how to solve it?
Thanks in advance for any help and clues.
    Valerio

    Thanks for your reply.
At this moment we can't export PNGs with an Alpha channel so we are stuck with TIFFs.
It is a bizarre issue though.
Here is a Dropbox link for the images, seems Google Drive download links are buried deep:

  • In iPhoto 11 imported tiff files remain tiff after editing.  I need to convert to large file jpegs. How? using the "export" function they become too small

I thought imported tiff files would be converted by iPhoto to JPEGS in previous versions of iPhoto.  this might have been a disadvantage but my current project requires JPEGs as the final product.
    thanks for any guidance
    Jim

Drag the photo from the iPhoto window to the desktop or export as kind = JPEG
As to too small - what is too small?  The pixel dimensions of the exported JPEG will be identical to the original TIFF - the file size is smaller because JPEGs are compressed - which of course reduces file size - which of course is the reason that JPEG exists

  • Unsharp text when importing tiff

    Hallo all!
I´m working with a publication right now, i write music in a program called FINALE (www.finalemusic.com ). I export the Finaledocument to TIFF, and then import it into Indesign CS5  to do the layout and combine it with grapihcs etc...
BUT...when i print the Indesigndocument, all of my imported TIFF-files are slightly unsharp. Not much, but it´s a differens betwen the text in the imported tiff-file and the text i wrote directly in the indesign-document.
First i thought the problem was when converting to PDF, but i compared a PDF , a Indesign and a original finale-file of the same document and it seems that the "unsharpness" has to do with the TIFF...
I choose even 600 dpi to be on the safe side but...
Any idea how to solve this?
    Klas

Check your Export settings. By default, bitmap images that are way over "the usual" dpi are downsampled to 300 dpi. It shouldn't be harmful because that ought not be visible unless you zoom in quite a lot on your screen. It does, though, introduce a small sliver of grey pixels around your original graphics.
Can Finale export to a vector format? Print to PDF? That ought to work flawlessly.
If you are stuck to bitmaps, you can select a high dpi setting -- your 600 dpi, or even better, as high as 1200 dpi -- and convert the image to Single Bitmap with Photoshop or another useful bitmap editor. Single Bitmaps can have a super-high resolution and still maintain a small file size, and they will not be downsampled to the usual 300 dpi: they will get printed at the fullest possible resolution. (*)
(*) Well unless you go way nuts and select something like 2000 dpi. The exact numbers for single bitmaps can also be found and changed in the PDF Export options dialogue.

  • Lightroom 3.3 Corrupt Thumbnail Previews

I have just noticed a problem that I have not encountered until I upgraded to 3.3.  After I export my images as jpegs, the thumbnail previews are not complete for a few of the files.  I get about two corrupt thumbnails in Windows Explorer out of 100 exported images.  Here is a screenshot showing what they look like.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1426292/Capture.JPG
The images are fine when I open the files, but the previews are not complete.  I would like to fix it so my clients don't get "broken" thumbnail views.  Has anyone else seen this problem?  Suggestions are welcomed.  Thanks.

LR 3.3 and PS 4 ext. The original was a camera phone jpeg.
No, I have only VERY rarely had this happen.  I don't use this workflow. I was trouble shooting an issue for someone that is having a problem. I was quite surprised to see it happen. The computer is an i7 running Vista 64.
Your fix would require ALL previews to be rebuilt. I have a catalog of over 80,000 images. I don't see that as a reasonable fix. If it was a problem, I'd rather try deleting image from catalog and then sync the folder again and see if that fixed it. No need to trash a bunch of good previews for one bad apple. : ) especially since it's just a test jpeg image. I suspect a read/write time with image size and such playing a role.

  • Importing TIFF

I can import TIFF files into Aperture, but only by dragging it from Finder onto Aperture, not through the cmd-I import window. Why is this? It ask this just out of curiosity. I hardly ever need to import TIFF's.
    Koen

    Koen,
you should be able to import tiff-files from the Import-panel. I am doing it all the time, for example:
What kind of tiff-files do you have? 16 bit, 8 bit, what is the file-extension? Are the tiff directly from your camera or did you generate them using a program?
What are your import setiings? Can they be excluding duplicates, special file types?
And what is your Aperture version and your MacOS X version?

  • Help - sporadic corrupted data when importing photos from iPhoto

I am importing photos for a slide show, and every once in a while (frequency varies but sometimes as much as every other photo), I have a strange problem. Several frames will just be mixed up colors, nothing discernible at all, as if some of the data has been corrupted. Re-importing the photos usually solves the problem so I don't think it is any problem with specific photos. Any ideas? Thanks!
Using iMovie HD 6.0.2, all other software is also up to date per Software Update

    ok, next idea:
you're using an iBook => harddrive space is limited...
tell us, how much free space is on your hd...
you shouldn't "overcrowd" your drive, 80% filled should be max,
because all apps use widely socalled "temp-files" - never seen in Finder, but neccessary (you probably have heard of that rule: iDVD needs 10 - 15GB to work smoothly...)

  • Image Date error on importing TIFF images from Disk

I have thousands of high quality (~100 Mb each) images in 20 folders on a 1 Tb hard drive. I have been using Bridge to manage the images, adding some metadata such as keywords and copyright data. I am considering importing all these images into Aperture and using it as the primary image management tool.
But I am concerned about an apparent bug in the way Aperture handles the "image date and time".
In Bridge (and GraphicConverter), the "image date" field is correct, directly from my CFV digital back on the camera and inline with the time of day the shot was taken (e.g. sunrise image at 6am). When I import the image into Aperture, the time gets shifted by 14 hours.
For example, an image in Bridge that correctly shows Date Created as 10/05/2009 7:36am gets distorted to 10/05/2009 9:36pm, exactly 14 hours later than the correct time. It was taken at 7:30 in the morning but, in Aperture, looks like it was taken in the late evening. It does not look like a time zone issue as the image was taken in the same time zone as my Mac Pro is set to.
I have tried deleting the masters and re-importing them with GMT +2 and GMT -12 in the two time zone adjustment fields. This gets the right time into the Image Date field but then the image has the wrong time zone data in the "Camera Time Zone" and "Picture Time Zone" fields.
I have tried running MetaData > Update Date and Time (with Master files ON) but it comes back with an error "no master files were adjusted ... because they have a format that does not permit modification".
I have tried running MetaData > Update Date and Time (with Master files OFF). It appears to work but I assume that the underlying file in the Aperture library still has the incorrect time.
Have others faced this problem? Is there a solution? Is it a known bug that Apple might fix one day?
    Regards
    Peter

I am seeing a very similar problem when importing TIFF files back to Aperture.
This is what I do and what I see:
    1. I import RAW images from my camera into Aperture. They show the correct date and time.
    2. I open an RAW image in Photoshop (CS4) directly from the finder. The image inside Photoshop (file/info) shows the correct date and time.
    3. After editing I save my image as 16bit TIFF and it still shows correct date and time.
    4. I import the new TIFF back into Aperture. The time is shifted back 15 hrs!
I can then go in and Metadata/Update Date and Time (no masters) and it works well, but it is a pain to do on each image I process.
In all cases camera and image timezone is set to US Pacific as it should be.
To me this seems like Aperture is somehow miss-interpreting the timezone when reimporting TIFFs.
I have not tried importing JPEGs or PSDs back but I will and will report back...

  • Cannot import Tiff files

a few days after importing my folders the import dialogue window has changed and I cannot import TIFF files anymore, only jpg and raw!! what can I do???
    Thanks Axel

I am guessing then, done as an Export to TIFF with the Export Dialogue, not Export to PSCS, then. Are they named the same as the Raw file except fot the Extension? If so, change the name by adding something like -edit.TIF and they will be imported. LR maybe seeing them as sidecars to the RAW and like JPEGs generated as a pair with a RAW by a camera, LR ignores it.
There are a number of very long threads on this issue. Most are titled impart 'RAW - JPEG'.

  • Lens profiles in imported tiff's

Raw files have all the lens profiles available, however, when I import tiff's I created in a 3rd party HDR program, when I choose lens profiles, it only shows a small handfull of profiles. I need the profile for my Canon 16-35 but the closest I can find is the 17-40.
How do I add the 16-35 profile?
    [email protected]

Bob, you would need to make a profile.
However, surely it would be better to apply lens corrections to RAW images before subjecting them to HDR treatment?

  • Trying to import video files.  Clock on files and hit import.  Imovie says generating thumbnails and importing.  Then after loading, no movies there.  help?

My 14 year old son is trying to import videos into iMovie.  He's done this a dozen times before with no problem.  Here is what he's doing "I went to import movies, clicked on the idv files and hit import.  On iMovie it said "generating thumbnails, and importing".  Then it gave the loading sign.  When it was done, none of the movies/videos were in Imovie.  He needs to have this done as a xmas gift for a friend by Thursday .

After much research and troubleshooting, GoToMeeting replied with the final answer: We do not support the uploading of recordings to editing software. If you are having issues uploading a recording, unfortunately, we do not have tools or steps to resolve this. It is not a supported feature. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
The no longer plan to support editing of recordings made with their software.  So, we are planning to find a new meeting provider.
