Corrupt Word Docs - cannot open

I have spent that last 2 days reading the posts here and various online, whitepapers, and recovery docs from "leading" software / document recovery tools. Nothing is working but I still do not believe all is lost. Yes, my bad for not having a
backup - that aside...
I had a workstation at my office that got infected. The employee was saving her Word 2010 docx's to her "My documents" folder instead of the "data drive". A "g-squad" type person came out, told me it could not be disinfected so
he wiped the system and reloaded Win7. Not sure how he "wiped" it but I imagine he just deleted the partition on Win7 reload. I freaked when I saw he didnt backup the docs in the my doc folder before he reloaded, and he told me that was MY fault
for not backing up...
He popped in a CD and
said he was able to "find" the "digital image" of the docs on the harddrive. A few minutes later I had the Word file icons back on the desktop. I tried to open the docs and got the error: "...cannot be opened because there
are problems with the contents" and "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened"
He looked at me, told me that was the best he could do, charged me $400 for his troubles and left. Last time I EVER - EVER use the "squad"...
I have tried:
opening as a TXT
sending to GMAIL and trying recovery
tried "open/repair" option in Word
importing into many "web-based" html/xml processors
many other attempts
So I have spent the last couple of days looking at MANY options. The best I can do is open the doc but I get a page of ASCII characters. Data recovery specialists in this city charge a LOT of money to do this, and I am pretty darn sure I can do the same as
long as I had the proper tools. I have looked at a LOT of software but haven't purchased any yet. I have read MANY MANY posts here on EE, and have looked at many of those packages, way too many to list here but lets just say at least the top 20 "recommended"
packages. They all say the same thing about recovering from NTFS, rebuilding the headers, etc, etc. but they all seem "consumer" in quality.
Is purchasing a "recovery" software my ONLY choice?
Are there any professional freeware tools I can add to my software tool kit? Years (MANY years) ago, I used to have a software that would display the digital bit mapping of the drive and "rebuild" the software files. Of course, this was back in Win95
days...
I appreciate and value the advice and recommendations from EE. Thank you

Hi,
Before you start purchasing recovery software try this last option. You can make a copy of the file right?
First make a copy because you will be making changes to the document.
Now in the Windows Explorer rename the file by adding .zip after the filename. Confirm that you want to rename this. Now double click the file in the windows explorer (the zip container). You will see the cornerstones of this document in several folders.
Now every folder has it's specific use for specific elements for this document such as document properties, pictures etc. You can open the various files in the various folders and see the contents of that file.
Now for testing you can remove one of the files in the first folder and try opening the document again after you removed the .zip from the filename again. I know a lot of work but if you try the various folders or different files in those folders you might
just be able to 'save' the document.

  • Pages export corrupts word doc how can I fix this glitch?

In Pages, when I Share and Export the Pages doc to a Word doc and open the Word doc it is corrupted - showing up copy from an older document. The same copy shows up every time. It looks faded out on each page and the actual copy from the Pages document shows up. This happens every time I export to Word and open the Word doc. Does anyone know how to fix this glitch?

A glitch I haven't heard about before. Are you sure that you are not opening the old doc every time and have saved the new some where else on the computer?

  • When I converted a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How can I solve this problem?

When I tried to convert a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How do I solve this problem?  I don't know how to change it from Read Only.

    Dear Sara
Thank you very much for sending the converted file.  Yes, I am able to edit it - that will be very useful to me and I appreciate your help.
Referring to your previous message when you said you'd converted via Acrobat and not Acrobat.com, I'm converting via Acrobat.com because that's the only option that is shown (how do I convert via Acrobat? - perhaps that would be more successful).  I'm using the Export PDF website, and the OCR is enabled to "Recognize text in English UK".  However, I've just tried converting a different LPA pdf form, this time for Health & Welfare https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/245571/LPA114_He alth_welfare_LPA.pdf and again I have the same problem as before.  I've altered it from "Read only" and thought I'd then be able to enter text, but "Drawing Tools" is shown in the pane and I'm unable to enter anything onto the form - everything appears to be in images.  Also, the lettering on the heading of' page 1 has become jumbled, with the word "Public" overlaying the word "Guardian."  Any suggestions as to what it is I'm doing wrong would be welcome - I don't like to be beaten!
    Regards,
    Judith.

Pages died today. Just downloaded the latest update 2 days ago. Last night shutting down my very new MacBook Pro Retina, Pages stopped shut down. Today Pages will not open, all my Pages docs cannot open. Help please! Anybody have a fix?

You probably have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 in your Applications folder, will open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them. It can not open Pages '08 files.
Pages '08/'09 in your Applications/iWork folder which can not open Pages 5 files.
When you were shutting down you probably had an unsaved document open.
You probably are opening the wrong versions of Pages to open the wrong document format.
Pages 5 has had over 90+ features removed.
Most users are going back to Pages 09 whilst Apple sorts this out.

  • Corrupt pdf files cannot open

I have a scanner that will scan documents into PDF format.
I use this method for keeping my paper storage to a minimum by keeping physical copies of only the most important documents (i.e tax returns).  I scan documents into my laptop and then destroy the originals.  I have Adobe 9 for reading them once they are scanned in.
My problem is recently my laptop has apparently been selective in what it will and will not open.  Some files open fine with no problems.  Others, scanned with the same scanner into the same format at the same time, will not open.
    The message I get says
Acrobat could not open 'file name.pdf' because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been corrupted.
The files were not sent to me via email.  I created them from my scanner or my using the pdf program as a printer (printing Word docs or web pages into pdf instead of onto paper).  When the documents were first scanned, they opened fine.  Now they do not.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
I am very frustrated because I need these documents and they cannot be replaced.

If I were you, I'd start with the support for the software you use for scanning. Sounds like it's got something out of whack.
If it's a good PDF, Reader will open it.

  • How To?  Default all Word Docs to Open In Pages?

If I right click on a doc, I can select to always open THAT doc in Pages - but - is there a way I can set the system to open ALL Word docs in Pages. I want Word to be a last resort only.
    Thanks!
    Mark

    mctheriot,
Yes, there is. Type cmd-I (Get Info), select Pages from the list (or navigate to it), then click the Change All button. That's all there is to it.

  • Need mailto: links in Word docs to open both *in Gmail* and *IN FIREFOX* how?

I have several "how to" documents at work that I've created to help make remembering the details of certain tasks easier. For several of these, I've got a mailto: link to some contact person which also has a subject line pre-filled with our account number so that I (or whoever uses the document) doesn't have to copy/paste all that stuff. So the link is in a WORD DOC not in a web page.
I keep two browsers open at work: Chrome, which is logged into my personal Gmail account, and Firefox, which is logged into my work email (which uses Gmail). It is critical that when I sent a work email (say, by clicking the mailto: link in the Word doc file) that it opens in FIREFOX so that it's coming from my work account.
What currently happens is that I right click the link and click "Open Hyperlink" and it launches a CHROME window, loads Gmail, and prefills the to: and subject: fields. *sigh*
I've set Firefox as my default browser through its settings. I also shut down Firefox entirely and followed the directions [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_Your_Default_Browser#Force_Firefox_to_make_itself_the_default here] which say:
''If Firefox already thinks that it is default, exit Firefox completely, go to "Start Menu -> Run" and enter this into the text box:
    '''firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser'''''
I've done both of those things, and it still opens the mailto: link in Chrome. Could someone please help me?

Well now I'm a bit miffed. Gmail was already set as the default Firefox mail client. Firefox is set as the default browser. But when I followed the directions here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Changing%20the%20e-mail%20program%20used%20by%20Firefox#w_windows-7-and-vista for how to set the mailto: protocol default program in Windows 7 it only offered me 4 programs to choose from, and no way to add a new one or choose something different. Google Chrome was the only one that was a web browser, so it's the only one I could use for Gmail (unless someone knows a way to set up something else to send gmail email from?)... how LAME!

I doubt that un-installing it will solve the problem, but at least it won't do any more damage than it's evidently already done.  I would call MacKeeper Tech Support and ask them what to do.  You'll need to call them anyway in order to un-install it as it doesn't come with a script or instructions on how to do that.
what does everyone else use to keep their mac running soothly ??
For the most part I have hardly ever had to use anything over the twenty odd years I've owned Macs.  I have a large collection of mostly free utilities that I keep around just in case.  What sort of problems were you having before MacKeeper came on the scene?

  • Microsoft Word Doc not opening - EPS Import message

Suddenly whenever I try to open a word doc I get the following message: There is not enough memory or disk space to run the converter "EPS Import". What in the world does this mean?? There is still 78 of 148 GB of memory available so clearly not a disk memory space issue. Help! I need to get my documents open!!
    Thanks.

Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • When i import a word.doc and open on my iPad in  Pages, and then later export and reopen as a word.doc on my PC, hyphenation is lost

when i import a word.doc to my iPad in Pages and then, later, export back to my PC as a word.doc, why does hyphenation disappear?

Perhaps it would work better if you use one of the apps specifically designed to interface with MS Word, instead of Pages which has to convert everything in and out.

  • Word 2013 cannot open embedded .docx files

I am running Word 2013 64-bit as part of an Office 365 ProPlus install. I am unable to open any embedded .docx files. Double clicking launches the message "The server application, source file, or item cannot be found." Single clicking displays
the message "Double-click to edit Unknown".
I can open other embedded file types: doc, xls, xlsm. Embedded Outlook email files will open, but now display as OLE objects. Also the icon for embedded files now usually appears as the 'box with contents'.
Opening files directly in Word works correctly, the problem is limited to opening embedded docx files.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated...thanks. -JAmsUser

    Hi,
“I am unable to open any embedded .docx files” - I would like to confirm that whether these files are new created or existing files which might be created in an earlier version of Office.
The error indicates that the connection between the embedded documents and the Office application has been broken. So what if you remove and re-embed it into the document? Embed it again might pick up the new mechanisms.
I'd also suggest you run an Online Repair and see if it helps:

  • Corrupted word doc - document.xml corrupted

Word document containing full semester uni work of my friend. She had NO backups and file was kept on USB key (hard to believe but true).
I tried renaming as .zip and extracting the document.xml - no luck.
tried hex editor to see if I could see any text  - nothing.
I'm not interested in recovering the images in the file (got those ok). Just need the text if possible. (or point me to tools which might work?)
    Thank you very much.

It had a PK zip signature at the beginning of the file which is why I tried 7-zip.  I looked at another 'docx' file and it did too.  I didn't realize that 'docx' files were also zipped.
I had the same problem with 'document.xml' but the other 'xml' files seemed to open fine.  I couldn't extract or view 'document.xml'.

  • Word .docs not opening

I am trying to open a number of word documents in pages and appleworks (which I have done successfully in the past) now I get an error message "file format not valid". I can't see what I have done to change settings etc. so would appreciate some help with this. Thank you in advance for help given.

    Kayle-
I have the exact same problem so I was looking at this post to see if there were any solutions. Pages opens most Word files and fails on others. My solution has been:
    1. To make Pages my default as mentioned so it tries it first.
    2. To use AbiWord to open the ones that fail (right click or control click on the file and use the 'open with' command to select Abiword to open the file.)
I am not fond of Abiword as a Word Processor, which is why it is not my default, but its importers are impressive. It opens all Word files as well as Word Perfect for Windows files which none of my apps can handle.
NeoOffice also does a better job of Word Importing.

  • My user information has been corrupted and I cannot open Microsoft Office

After the latest Office 2011 for Mac update, I have not been able to start Word, Excel, or Powerpoint.  Outlook for some reason is ok.  After going back and forth with Microsoft, I have discovered that I can open these programs if I have created a new user account on my mac.  Is there away I can reset the pertinent user information in order to open these programs on my existing user account?
    Thanks

Are you now seeing two versions of Mail in Applications?
Try moving the small 8.1MB Mail.app to the Trash. But don't empty it. Then download and install the Security Update again. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
If that doesn't work, use File>Put Back for the one in the Trash and see this post and the two following it. If you get another small one as a result, you can keep working with that one for this workaround. You won't need the one from the Trash.
