Corrupted Administrator Account
I recently upgraded the HD on my iMac. It appears that in the migration the Administrator account must have been corrupted. File sharing and other privileges associated with the Admin account are acting buggy. I created a new account and gave it Admin rights and the problems disappear. The new problem though is that the new user account is like a brand new machine. There is no user data, settings, etc.
How can I migrate all of the information (itunes library, pictures, bookmarks, preferences) from the old Administrator account to the new one? Thanks in advance.
Well manually you could use the Shared user and simply copy folders across. All I think you would want to do after that is change the ownership of the files to the new account. For example the iTunes stuff is all kept in the one folder from what I understand so at a guess it should just be drag and drop.

ITunes crashes when trying to access Store while in administrator account
I have been having this problem for the past month at least.
Everytime i try to access the iTunes store it crashes my itunes. This ONLY happens when im logged in as the administrator. Now i generally only have am administrator account because this is my computer for work (i have my own business and im the only one who uses it) It used to work perfectly and one day it didnt work so good... things in the store were missing like images and text. then one day CRASH. and ever since CRASH.
I created a TEST account and when i logged in and activated Itunes it accessed the store no problem.
Does anyone have a clue?
I have uninstalled an reinstalled my itunes... I have all the latest software updates. Its not the proxy server thing that so many have problems with... i don't have a proxy server....i've created a new location .... its not that... i don't have parental activated... its not that. I have backed up all my music.. uninstalled and reinstalled itunes... i have gone thru the plist thing nothing is working.
why does i tunes work in the test account and not the administrator account?
HELP PLEASE! anyone? I have tried calling apple but they hung up on me twice..:(

Resetting all iTunes preferences hasn't fixed this and neither has running on another account on the same computer. My private MacBook Pro is fine. I suspect a corrupt file somewhere (I have repaired permissions). -
Safari asking for keychain "login" in non-administrative account.
To protect my wife's newly acquired refurbished MacBook from her complete lack of knowledge about Macs or computers in general, I set myself up as the Administrator on her MacBook and protected this account with a password. I then set her up as a simple user without a password, but to whose account the MacBook goes automatically after a reboot (to make things simple for her).
Now each time my wife opens Safari on her account, it asks her for "your keychain password" (she has none established on her account). Instead, the password that is accepted by Safari is my administrative account (while she is opening Safari on her account that is not password protected). Interestingly, when I log in to my administrative account and open Safari, it does not ask for this password.
If she hits "cancel" on this password request, Safari appears to function without problems, however, she is annoyed by this frequent appearance of this window asking for the password and is asking me to make it stop (I have no clue how).
Any suggestions?

I did as suggested and lost my keychain set-up. (nameX.keychain). It still seems to be in home/Library/Keychains but haven't figured how it get it back - it is no longer listed in Keaychain sidebar. When/if I do I will methodically go through my key chain and manually copy all data I need and then print it out and laboriously re-enter it into a new keychain file. ( I do have a back up of nameX.keychain incase what I found in my home library is corrupted); at some previous point I was able to make my nameX.keychain my default keychain. Will figure it out again, I am sure.
What a bore, though; the hours I have wasted on all this.
Since installing Leopard to my 4 month old MacBook I feel I am getting bloatware from Apple. Enough is enough. So far the following have occurred:
-Help crashes all the time from the Finder (all Help was gone but now I get it sporadically in Safari, Palm stuff, a few other apps but it is temperamental).
- Mt Keychain problems: Seemed scrambled and had to sign in whenever opening Safari;
- my Contacts/Addresses and Calendar to my Palm TX broke - can't isync them though all else in PalmDeskTop works; to be fair, this may have happened between Leopard instal and keychain fix-it the little update mentioned above.
-I don't know if I can blame this on Leopard but now my Word docs cannot be spell checked in anything other than American spelling and there is no way to change it to British spelling. I have to check everything in Texted. Go figure.
I suspect Leopard was released too early.
I've never had this problem with any Mac OS upgrade and I've done them all. I feel like I'm in a Windows Nightmare. Given what I have gone through, I would never have upgraded. Ya, ya! I should have backed up but I don't have the room and I really trusted Apple to get it right, again.

Using administrator and non administrator accounts - questions
I have been looking around re security for my iMac - newly updated to Snow Leopard. I am not very savvy re much of computer things. I just found a pdf entitled Mac OS X Security Configuration. It recommended having a standard nonadministrator account as well as an administrator account. When I first set up my iMac in Leopard coming from a pc, I had telephone support for my first three years and used it when I ran into some issues. During that time following directions from different support people I have ended up in Systems Preferences "Accounts" having 5 different accounts - one "Administrator", one "Login only" entitled "Guest Account", and three Standard [one entitiled with my name and the other two "TEST1" and "TEST2"]. When I am in the "accounts" window in Systems Preferences, my "Administrator" account is selected, but I cannot select any of the others.
I am thinking from what I read in the article that I should probably delete the three "standard" accounts so I am left with the "Administrator" and "Guest" accounts. And then when my computer turns on, it will use my "Guest" account. Would you agree? Right now when I want to get back in after my computer went to sleep, I have to enter my password. Would this not be required if I am in the "Guest" acccount?
Two questions:
(1) I don't know how to delete those accounts - if, in fact, I should.
(2) How and when will I use the two accounts that are left when the computer turns on?1. You can delete the Test1 and Test2 accounts if you log into your Administrator Account. Once in your Admin Account, open System Preferences > Users & Groups and you will see and be able to delete the Test1 & Test2 accounts.
2. Leave your Guest account for, well, guest users. Do not use it in the normal course of events. When you log out of the Guest account, all the settings, caches, etc. are wiped, as are all files and folders that you may have saved in the Guest account home folder. The Guest account is truly designed only for temporary, guest use.
3. Leave your Administrator account for use only for installing programs, doing system administration, managing accounts, etc.
4. User your named account as your regular account. It appears to already be a User account. The primary limitation is you cannot install programs in a regular User account. This actually helps protect your Mac from viruses and other malware that would need to install software in order to corrupt your system.
5. You can turn off the need to enter a password when your computer sleeps in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. UNcheck the option called "Require password for sleep and screen saver." -
Is this the OS X Server Directory Administrator Account?

I have enabled root access on my local user but I accidentally deleted the Directory Administrator account in the Server App the was under the Users tab. Now when I try to gain root access to /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 the username and password to authentic it is not the same as my local computer administrator account. If anyone can explain to me what the account is that I can't root and how to edit it, I would appriciate it thanks.There seems to be some general confusion around authentication on OS X lately; you're not the only one that's been wondering about this recently.
There are two separate login systems available within OS X. These are the local authentication database, and distributed authentication database. These can coexist. Local authentication is basically LDAP, but just for your local OS X host. Distributed authentication is full-on network distributed authentication; it's the same authentication database, but shared across multiple computers.
An OS X client uses local authentication for the root account, and for other accounts created in the local authentication directory.
An OS X client can use distributed authentication when it has been "bound" to a distributed authentication system. The distributed authentication system that the client is "bound" to might be OS X Server or Linux running Open Directory and LDAP and Kerberos, or it might be Microsoft Windows Server and a distributed authentication configuration comprised of Active Directory and related pieces.
With Open Directory on OS X Server, the diradmin user is the default user that can administer the distributed authentication database, but it's certainly not the only such user that can be created in the database. Consider when there's a larger deployment of OS X systems. You might have folks that can administer a local system, but the folks that administer all systems are usually different. In some other installations, the local admin user is only a backup, and only used should the Open Directory configuration require maintenance or reconfiguration. You don't want to run around to all your Mac or Windows systems and add a new user or disable a user that leaves the organization, for instance, or that needs to have their password reset. You want to do that in one spot. That's what a distributed directory provides.
The OS X Server 10.6 Open Directory Administration manual might provide an introduction to the environment, and the Workgroup Manager tool is still a common way to manage Open Directory on OS X and OS X Server. (While it was once integrated with the server administration tools, Workgroup Manager is now a separate download.)
To reset and recreate the diradmin user here, I'd probably trash Server.app, reset the Server.app environment, and reinstall Server.app and reconfigure the local setup. This if you've not accumulated a whole lot of configuration details within the local server configuration. Here are the closest I've seen to official reset instructions. This will nuke your Server.app configuration. (I'd also encourage have a full-disk backup or two, but that's generally recommended, general good practice and geerally appropriate management paranoia.)
FWIW, also have a look at your backup strategy, too. Even the most skilled folks can and do occasionally make a mistake, and disks and computers do fail, and databases do get corrupted, and computers do occasionally get dropped or stolen. Have a backup. Or two. -
No logon possible with "Administrator" Account
Hi,
since a few weeks it's not possible for me to log on with the Administrator account via the Explorer like http://<server>:<port>/irj or /nwa or /useradmin etc.
It's still possible to log on at the visual Administrator with the Administrator account.
But when i want to log on to the portal (/irj) the logon mask appears again after correct logon.
If I want to use an other account for logon after trying to logon with administrator account the message comes up, that "Authentication failed. User is already authenticated as a different user."
We are using EP 7.0 SPS 23 incl. actual patches.
User store is the UME DB + LDAP (read access)

yeah i just checked out the note. But it doesn't fit to me. I neither get the mentioned error in the traces nor do i have a problem connection with other users except the ones with "administrator" in their name.
Additional info: I have the problem throughout my Portallandscape. So dev, qas and productive engine are affected. So it would be a big coincidence that all three ticketstores are corrupt or something like that.

I have Norton Internet Security, but that doesn't seem to have stopped it. And it's goofy. It won't let me lock it by clicking its lock. The lock keeps magically coming unlocked.
Also, my computer crashes more than once a week on average.
Those two facts are related.
Norton Antivirus has a very long and illustrious reputation for mangling Mac OS X systems, sometimes to the point where a complete reinstall is necessary. Among other things, it installs kernel extensions which are known to cause kernel panics and system freezes; it contains known and documented bugs which can silently corrupt Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign files, destroy a user's ability to authenticate as an administrator, and (on PPC systems) can cause Classic to stop functioning; and Symantec has on at least two occasions now released flawed .dat file updates which erroneously report certain critical Mac OS X files as "viruses." (Deleting these "viruses" causes damage to the system that in some cases renders it unbootable.)

Administrator account keeps getting deleted
Is it possible to have two Administrator user accounts in Lookout? On one system, I have my Administrator account and my customer wanted to have his own account. We are seeing a situation where both accounts disappear. Is the dual account the reason for this?
If so, I will tell my customer to either use mine or create another that I will use to administer the system.

It has happened several times in the last month or so. On Monday, the manager at one of our districts was locked out of Lookout. I finally directed him to use task mgr to "end task". Task mgr reported that Lookout was not responding and we had to "end task" several times to get out. When he relaunched Lookout, all the user mgr entries were gone. I had him set up just one admin and the 2 operator accts. We exited and relaunched Lookout several times after that without a problem.
I am concerned about Citafel database corruption, do you think that is a valid concern?
The system is Lookout 6.0.2.

Administrator account disappeared

some weeks ago, my administrator account disappeared. I think this happens after I used Onyx. I have an administrator account and a standard account on my Macbook. Typically, I am using the standard account. One day, however, when I wanted to install an update, I was surprised by finding that my administrator account was gone. I can not log into it. My macbook simply don't recognize that there is another account.
In the user menu, I can see my old admin account below Groups?!? I tried several things, however, I was not able to log into my admin account.
Anyone seen something similar? I guess that I probably have to reinstall Mac OS X, but I would like to avoid this option.

to log in as root. once you are logged in as root run the following terminal command
rm /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/short-user-name.plist
Instead of short-user-name put in the above the short name of the problem admin user. It's the same as the name of that user's home directory in /Users folder. Please make sure you copy the command EXACTLY as given. it's very important. we don't want to delete the wrong thing here.
Press enter in terminal.
Restart, log in as root again and try creating the account with that shortname (and make it admin). it will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes". -
Administrator Account Usage Question
So I have been under the impression for quite some time that the Administrator account is different than accounts in the Administrators group, other than just always having the full access token- specifically, that a corrupted or misused Administrator account
can damage the system more than the same corruption/misuse of an account in the Admin group.
Is there anything within the Windows security architecture itself which relies on the Administrator account?
My organization enables the Administrator account on all our machines, rather than creating an account within the Admin group for troubleshooting.
Is there any reason we should not be doing this (apart from the obvious, "minimize people with admin access")?

Unable to log into administrator account after software update
I've done a clean installation of server 10.5 on a G5 Xserve using the simplified "workgroup" setting. Created a named administrator account as part of the setup. Once passed the initial setup screens I did a software update to 10.5.8. After reboot I'm locked out of the named administrator account. I can still log in as root and localadmin using the same password. However, I don't see any accounts listed under the Users tab in Server Preferences. I've done nothing to this system other than answer a few standard questions during install and then update software.
This result is repeatable as I tried simply reinstalling the server OS figuring I must have done something wrong the first time. In fact the reason I'm reinstalling in the first place is related to this problem. Something caused all my admin and user accounts to go away on the original server setup. Couldn't figure it out so I decided to do a fresh install. I realize now it was likely related to a software update.
When logged in as root and using Console I see errors like "'No LDAP Master' while processing a command of type: 'readSettings' in plug-in: 'servermgr_accounts'". I'm a newbie to the server world and I'm not sure what that means.
There should be nothing remotely fancy going on here. Simply a stand alone server getting a fixed IP from a router. A single admin account, no directory services. Before the software update everything seemed fine.

I passed in username and password of account "A" to method "LaunchAppWithElevatedPrivilege", and also the application i want to launch, e.g. "C:\windows\regedit.exe", but when i run the service program, i found it do launch
"regedit.exe" with elevated account "A", but the content of regedit.exe is pure back. screenshot as below:
Can anyone help me on this?You code is not dealing with the DACL access to Winsta0\Default. Only the LocalSystem account will have full access and the interactively logged on user which is why regedit is not displaying properly. You'll need to grant access to your user.
You also need to deal with UAC since that code is going to give you a non-elevated token via LogonUser(). You need to get the full token via a call to GetTokenInformation() + TokenLinkedToken.

Why does my itunes work in the guest account but not my administrator account?
I have tried to reset, retry, restart, reinstall and restore itunes on my pc to figure out why it won't work on my administrator account yet it's fine if I sign into my guest account. It worked fine one day and the next, just didn't work. I have Windows 8.1. Any ideas?

System Preferences > Language and Text > Make sure that U.S. is selected. If there are multiple languages selected there will be a flag in the menu bar and make sure that that is set to U.S.. -
How do I create an administrator account?
Recently my macbook started acting up so I sent it to the school computer people. They fixed and gave it back. Now whenever I try and download an application or software, it asks for an administrator username and password. Nothing works. I checked the accounts in system preferences. Both accounts are standard. The computer people say I need an administrator account.
anyone know how to do this?The article Kappy linked to is for 10.5. While it may also work for 10.4, this is a safer procedure: I lost my admin user (Mac OS X 10.4 and earlier), since it doesn't require you to enable the root account.

Problem with software update - now can't log on to administrator account
Hello -
I updated software yesterday and didn't pay attention to what was updating. I always just install the updates when they come up.
Now I can't login to my administrator account or change the password. I could log into another account, but iTunes won't stay open. It opens for about 10 seconds then closes.
So I'm assuming that the updates were a mac OSX update and an iTunes update.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix?
Is there anyway to "undo" the most recent update?
Any help would be appreciated.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...
