Corrupted backup? -inaccessible, or salvageable data?

I connected iPad 2 first time to iTunes in over 2 years. Wanted to update ios from ios 4 to 6. The hdd was pretty full and I was able to copy pictures and videos to folder on laptop. Deleted cameraroll from ipad and Then I made an encrypted backup. Then I reset and wiped data. Immediately plugged back in, to laptop, then updated to iOS 6. Then connected to laptop again and selected "restore from backup" and entered encryption key.
After three seconds message pops up: iTunes could not restore the iPad "apple's iPad" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with t...
After trying hundreds of times, including disabling the antivirus for a few minutes still same message every time.
I remember that when i made backup took less than aminute and i was kinda surprised but ther were no error alerts or popups and it said backup complete. i Researched backup folder location and the backup has 525 files and is 258 MB, which is about same as my iPhone backup.
This means backup is not empty, but is it really corrupted or is it some compatibility error, or did I really lose two years of notes, documents, voice recordings and tax records and PDFs?
If anyone is willing to save me from this catastrophic nightmare they have my gratitude and appreciation for your help

That's some sort of problem writing to the TM volume. If Disk Utility and Disk Warrior don't find actual problems (ignore the probably bogus plist messages), it may be something in the drive's hardware or firmware, or the connection to it.
I'd be inclined to try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two, if you can.
If there are any hubs or daisy-chains, try connecting directly.
If this is a multi-interface drive, try connecting via the other one.
Am I right? Is my disk failing, and is the other parition on that drive also in danger?
It's very hard to tell, but perhaps. The only other instance of the exact +*set extended attribute+* problem I've seen was in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11410600&#11410600
It's a bit more convoluted, and there are two posters with the same problem, but it does appear the drive was the problem.

  • How can I transfer sms data from a corrupted backup to my phone?

    Hello chaps,
I have an empty iphone, and two backups, from this morning and four months ago.
Restoring the backup from this morning gives the error 'corrupted or incompatible'. I have tried various solutions from forums, none of them work.
So instead I have restored sucesfully from the four month old backup. The ONLY thing I want from the new backup are my sms's.
How do I get these onto my phone?
I have already tried copying the sms file (3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28) from the NEW backup to the OLD backup and tried to restore that, however if I do this it throws the corrupted message.
I have read this file using sql readers, it has all my texts in wonderful glory, I just WANT THEM ON MY PHONE!
    How!?

For a start- Im very suspicious of the corrupted mesage in the first place, I have had previous experiences of this message where restarting etc has resolved the issue, implying that there isnt really anything courrupted, its some bug with itunes or the iphone.
Secondly, even if it is genuinely corrupted, it would seem unlikely that every single file within the backup is corrupted. I only want to retrieve the 30mb sms file. And I can open and browse this file from the corrupted backup just fine using third party software.

  • Corrupt backup - help restoring without losing all my SMS'

    Hi all,
(not sure if i've posted this in the most appropriate place - wasn't too sure where it should go...)
I have been having issues with icloud since installing iOS 5 on my 3GS. I took the phone to the Apple Store and after much deliberation, they suggested that the only solution would be to erase the iPhone completely and restore as if it were new as there is most probably an issue with a corrupt backup (previously i had been restoring from backup as i didn't want to lose photos, data etc.).
So, i went away and did this, but obviously lost everything that wasn't held in iCloud. However, this process did fix the iCloud issues  - so, we have established that the backups that were being taken were corrupt somehow.
Now, given that i don't want to lose all my photos, sms' etc. I reverted back to the original backup (i.e. to the broken version) as it's still usable i just can't use the calendars.
It seems like i have to make a choice - have a fully functioning, working phone but lose my SMS history (unacceptable as i have SMS conversations from a close friend who sadly died) or have a phone that is semi-functioning but retains the text messages (not ideal as i use calendars on my mac to set up meetings etc. would be helpful to have this on my phone too!) .
I have searched and searched and searched the web for methods of exporting sms' onto my computer or back onto the phone but so far have been unsuccessful in all attempts. Ideally i would like the texts back on the phone, but if this isn't possible then at a minimum i want them to be on my computer (i am currently attempting to use the iphonebackupextractor but having issues with this too).
Does anyone know of a successful method of getting SMS' off iOS5?
Given that iCloud backups take the SMS' it's very frustrating that i can't save these somewhere on the cloud and have them download separately like i can with emails, calendars, contacts.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.  I do not believe there is anyway to save your SMS. At some point, you are going to loose them either as part of a phone upgrade or change, software crash, whatever.  One thing you could do is take screen captures of the SMS messages you want to save.  To do this, position the message on the screen and then hold down the Home and On/Off Button for a second or so.  You should see the screen go white for a brief moment simulating a camera flash.  Now your screen is captured in your photo library.  You could keep doing that until you've captured all of them.  Not necessarily ideal, but it's at least a way to make a backup of the conversations.
    Good luck.

  • The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used

I am trying to restore files from an NT back up on a SBS 2003.   The backup was taken on this machine and trying to restore to the same.   I get this error: The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used.
I tried copying it to a different machine with no luck.  Any suggestions?
    Robert

    Hi,
Since the backup file cannot be restored on a different machine, the backup file could be corrupt. You need to use some third party recovery utilities to restore the backup file.

  • Corrupted backup files

Hi, I've only had my BlackBerry Curve 9300 for a couple of months and I'm having problems backing up to my computer. The backup always appears to have been successful (i.e. shows the 'Your backup is complete' message) but when I go to look at the backup files (via 'Device' and 'Restore' from the menu) they always show the message "The selected backup file might be corrupted".
I've tried this on my laptop (Windows Vista) and my PC (Windows 7) but its always the same error.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

The backup files (in a *ipd or *.bbb file format) are not viewable on your PC, from any native PC software.
They may be used to restore data to the BlackBerry.
You can alternatively use a PC software named MagicBerry from MenaStep, to extract data out of the backup file for use in a spreadsheet, etc.

  • Corrupt backup file

I recently had to do a Full System Recovery on my daughters notebook to correct an audio problem. I backed up her My Documents folder on a flash drive using the Windows Backup Utilty. After the reinstall of Windows XP Pro, I could not restore my files using the Backup Restore Wizard (nor any other way!). I get the message "Unrecognized Media" followed by "The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used." I found a couple programs to repair and recover corrupted backup files which found the files and displayed them but in order to restore them, you had to pay for the program which cost $149. I can't afford to pay that to restore my daughters files from college. I am a single consumer, not a corporation! Is there any free programs to accomplish this task? The afore mentioned  ones said "Free" but only half free!
A solution to my problem would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!! I have been very fustrated trying to get this resolved!!!
    Thanks, Jean1

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule".The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data-1/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.

When I back up my macbook pro to time capsule 3TB, this appears:
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Capsule”.The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Macintosh.sparsebundle” is already in use."
and I'm not able to back up.  What do I do?

As noted in the link I posted, that's fine if you're the only user logged-on to the only Mac using the TC's disks (internal and/or USB externals).  If not, that may corrupt other data being written, especially other backups.

  • Unable restore iPad after 5.1 update due to "corrupt backup"

I'm getting a corrupt backup message after updating iPad to 5.1 from iTunes on a Windows 7 HP laptop: “iTunes could not restore the iPad "iPad" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible.” I also have an iPhone 4 which I updated a while earlier without any problems.
Looking up community recommendations, I deleted older backups, still no dice. How do I restore my iPad? Have tons of stuff so factory restore not acceptable. Can you help?
    Here’s what I did:
    1) ITunes->Edit->Preferences->Devices: deleted older backups
    2) Shut down iTunes
    3) C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup: deleted (actually moved to another location) all backups except most current backup.
    4) Rebooted
    5) Started iTunes
    6) Reconnected iPad
    7) Selected "Continue Restore"..
    Get same error.
    Any help appreciated.

Hmmmmm... Should I say Yes or No to your question? After resetting the IPad I restored the Backup with the personal data from ICloud and the Apps were re-downloaded from the App-Store and installed. But the gamedata was not deleted because it was backuped in the cloud.

  • Corrupt backup file (.bbb) - missing manifest

    Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a corrupt backup file.  I did a full backup, followed by a factory reset on my Blackberry.  After the reset, I wanted to restore some of the data from the backup (contacts, ring profiles, messages, etc).  When I try to restore, it says the backup file may be corrupt and won't even let me choose individual databases to try to restore.
I discovered that you can open the .bbb file with programs like WinRAR or 7zip and see the contents.  My backup contains a "pkginfo" file and folder full of the databases / .dat files.  I ran another backup after the factory reset and compared it to my original backup.  The Desktop software would allow me to restore that backup, but it doesn't have any of my data so it's no good to me.  I opened that one with WinRAR also and discovered it has a "manifest.xml" file that my first backup doesn't have.  The manifest file looks to be an index of what each of the .dat files is associated with.  I tried copying that manifest file into my original backup file, but it still didn't work to restore.  The number of .dat files are different between the backups and I don't think the index numbers match for even individual files such as my contacts.
Is there any way to recreate the "manifest.xml" that should have been in my first backup?  Maybe a program that can read all the .dat files and decipher what they are so the index numbers can be matched up to the correct databases?
    Thanks,
    Andy

  • HT4972 I cannot back up my IPad because I have a corrupted backup. I need to delete it but cannot locate it on my computer or find help on this topic. I would appreciate any help.

I cannot back up my IPad because I have a corrupted backup that I need to delete. The problem is I cannot locate the file to delete it. How do you locate the backup file?

You have the latest version of iTunes on your computer (on a PC 'Help > Check For Updates' ; on a Mac 'iTunes > Check For Updates') ? You could also try ejecting the iPad and rebooting your PC and the iPad : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If you still get the same error then check whether it has actually deleted the backup (if you have other devices that you backup to that computer then they will also have backups) - they are stored under :
    Mac:~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
Windows Vista and Windows 7:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

  • How to fix corrupted backup then proceed with restore? Or extract app databases from corrupted backup?

Deeply let down by Backup restore :-(
iPhone 3GS with iOS5.1 (the latest) started to behave abnormally. Made a full restore of iOS then tried to restore from backup only to discover message that my backup is corrupt or not compatible. Contacts were restored more or less OK but all applications data including personal financials (PocketMoney records) were lost.
Tried 2 times to run restore from backup but without success :-( Is there any chance to fix so-called corrupted backup file or at least to retrieve my app databases out of there?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not that I've heard of.  You can extract some of your data from a backup using iPhone Backup Extractor, but I'm not sure that includes app data (you could try contacting them to find out).  And even if you could, I don't know how you would sync it back to your phone.

    3. The bugs will bite you. And in the meantime you laugh at everyone with problems and say it must be all their fault. Doesn't happen to my system.

The solution is simple.. unplug the power cord from the TC .. count to 10.. power up the TC again.

my iPhone was stolen. I just got a new one and am trying to backup my contacts and data from iCloud. How do you do that?

If your backup is in iCloud, and your new iPhone is already set up, go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, then go throught the setup screens on the iPhone and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and follow the prompts.  (If it isn't set up yet, just choose this option when setting it up.)
Be sure your iPhone it connected to wifi and your charger while it is restoring the backup.
