Corrupted backup.  Unable to recover photos, texts, app data, etc.

I recently updated to iTunes 10.5.  Prior to doing this I backed up my iPhone 4 but it said the backup was corrupt.  I figured that I could still proceed since I backed up a few days ago.  However, I was wrong.  When I tried to restore my phone after the update it said the restore points were not found.  I was forced to set up my phone as a new device.  Is there any way to restore photos and other data that was on my phone prior to the update or are they lost forever?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi avalo995,
There is no way to remove all data bar the app data when restoring the official iPhone & iOS, if this data is stored then it is held in the backup file and restoring from the backup file will return all the data onto the phone.
As for the text messages, you can take screenshots of the texts (via holding home button and then clicking the sleep/wake button) and export them off the iPhone onto a computer where they can be synced back as pictures in the future.
The backup file can be moved from one system to another by copying it from the original backup location and pasting it into the correct location on the other computer. The backup file location can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Hope it helps.

  • After system restore to back up have lost texts, photos and app data

Speakers not working on iphone all of a sudden and volume switches not working (just the volume comes up but no bars at the bottom).  So did system restore and more problems.
After I did this restore (to my backup done today) to my iphone 4s, I now have no text messages on my phone, no photos and no data on my nike running app (6months of records of runs).  Have searched through these forums and still stuck.
I think I'm going to have to take my iphone somewhere for the speaker issue, but have no idea where as optus sent it out to me directly via mai l(Adelaide, Australia).
In the meantime, I really want my texts, photos and app data back on my phone.
    any help HUGELY appreciated..

thanks for your reply.  I am trying the restore again now.
But no, I still have no sound, so it was all for naught.  Its fine if I have headphones in, and fine if its in a dock or connected to bluetooth, the phone also rings and I can hear people on the phone:  the only sound that doesnt work is music playing through the speaker, and video.  Also when I press the volume up and down buttons, nothing works.  I suspect there is something wrong with the docking connection as far as I can see from other peoples questions on here.
But the loss of texts and app data is just the icing on the cake

No. Only those Apps that are not installed on the new will migrate over.

No, but if the answer was yes it's a little late to start getting freaked out about it.

  • My SD card seems corrupt, how can I recover photos and videos

The SD card I used in a GoPro camera seems corrupt, I cannot detect in either in the camera or on the computer. How can I recover my photos and videos?

Type "recover photos" into a search engine window.
Dozens of fairly inexpensive products are available. Some have free trials or limited recovery for free.

  • I updated my iPod touch 4th generation from the latest iOS 4 update (i think maybe iOS 4.3.5 or something like that) to iOS 5.1.1 and my Photos, Videos, contacts, music, App data, etc. was deleted. How can I all the data back?

I updated my iPod touch 4th generation from the latest iOS 4 update (i think maybe iOS 4.3.5 or something like that) to iOS 5.1.1. I updated to iOS 5.1.1 on a Windows XP Home Edition with the Service Pack 3 installed on the Windows XP (which I believe is the latest version). After updating, I unplugged my iPod from the computer. I saw that all my photos and videos were on my iPod, but there were no apps. A window popped up and told me to enter a passcode for my iPod. I entered a passcode. I then locked my iPod and entered what I thought to be the correct passcode, but my iPod remained unlocked. Desperate, I tried many passcodes with failure. After a while, my iPod became disabled for a long time. I decided to reset my iPod. After I reseted it, I chose to reset from my earlier back up. After reseting, my computer loaded on all my apps. But, when I started using my iPod, I realized all my photos, videos, music, app data (like game saves and high scores), etc. were gone! I have no idea what to do and I am very stressed about this! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME GET ALL MY STUFF BACK!!!!!!

Go to iTunea>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backupright at the time you did the update. Then try restoring from that backup. If the apps are in your iTunes library, any app data will be restored to the iPod.
When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode). iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups.
Therefore, remembe the passcode that you enter this time.
It appears that if you restore from a backup, that backup is not subseqyently overwritten by the next backup.

  • Does updating your ipod delete apps, songs, photos or app data or any other thing ???

i want to update to 5.1 and it says that it will backup and restore all apps photos songs and everything.so,does updating delete apps or anything or erase app data and progress??

If you update on your syncing computer and all synced media like app, music and synced photos are in yur itunes library/on the computer, you will not lose them nor ose apps date.  The backup that iTunes makes as the first step of the update includes app dat and some other things but does not include synced media.

  • If I back up my iPod Touch using iCloud and then restore it, will I be able to get back all my photos, app data, etc?

About 5 months ago I was clearing up space on my PC. I had moved music that was in my music folder onto a USB and I thought that I could do the same with my iTunes Library folder onto my USB. But it wouldn't fit, so I moved it back. But when I went to back up my iPod it didn't recognize it anymore. I haven't been able to restore it anymore. Just until now I'm trying to see if I could back-up my data & photos to iClod and then Restore it, but I'm just a little unsure. Can anybody just reasure me that this will OR will not work.

I don't really think that you need to restore your device in order to sync it again with iTunes. I suspect all that you need to do is connect the device to iTunes and then accept it as a new device and choose the option to start syncing with that library.
Of course, it would be a good idea to back up to iCloud before you did this.

  • How to swap memory card with all apps, data etc.

    Hi,
Currently I have a 2GB memory card on my E63 (latest firmware), which has 3 'paid-for' applications and several free downloaded applications, loads of mp3s etc. I have purchased a 4GB memory card already, and would like to "do something" that would help me retain the entire contents of the current 2GB memory card, onto the 4GB memory card, s.t. apart from extra file space (which I plan to use for photos, videos, music), all other applications and current content remain available on the new card, w/o any other impact. I believe that backing up and restoring via 'Nokia PC Suite' won't save my apps, and only some of the data. E.g. it won't save the eBooks I have.
Thanks in anticipation for the help.
    cheers.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Easy.
Connect the E63 in "mass storage" mode.
Go into "My Computer", open the removable drive that will have appeared when you connected the phone. Enable the display of hidden and system objects (this bit is crucial, but I don't know how to do this not being a Windows user myself).
Once you have the display of all objects enabled, create a new folder on your desktop and then copy all of the files/folders in the phone over to it.
Next, disconnect the phone and eject the memory card. Insert the new one and format it in the phone (that'll be in your phone's manual).
Reconnect the phone in mass storage mode. Grab all the objects in the folder that you created on your desktop, including hidden and system objects, and drag'n'drop them over to the phone.
Disconnect the phone once everything has been copied over -- don't forget to use the "safely disconnect USB device" thing in the computer's notification zone.
    Job done.

  • Stripping all apps, data, etc out of iPAD 1

I  am selling my ipad 1 and want to delete all apps, email, personal information, etc. How to do this?

Plug into iTunes. Then go to tools at the top and restore. You will be able to select 'restore as a new device' which will wipe everything clean! :)

  • TS3682 I updated to a new phone.. Went to the PC to backup my phone and I get the corrupted backup message..  I go ahead and delete all backups for iPad and my iphone, restart everything from scratch and still get this message.  What the hey is wrong?

I have replaced my old iphone.  I had an older backup on my pc where I keep my ipad backup as well.  I have also updated and verified that the new ios is correct.
Came home and decided to backup the old phone to recover photos, music, apps, etc...
Connecting the old iphone,I get the backup corrupted message that everyone sees.
I go into the backup directory and delete both backups, restart the itunes, restart the PC, and then reconnect my iphone to the pc whihc restarts iTunes.
Tried to backup the old phone again and still the same message...
So, this is the new world where you cannot backup a "smart phone"....
Anyone got any ideas as to what needs to be done?

I've personally never seen this message.
And what it means, quite simply, is that there is corrupted data in your iPhone, so it will not let it make a backup so that the corrupted data does not get saved and passed on.
All you can do here is manually transfer your photos, contacts, calendars to your computer. And then transfer your purchases. You will not be able to make a backup.

  • Missing all app data

I just upgraded to the 4S yesterday. They activated it at the store but didn't transfer any of my apps/data (my contacts, etc are synced with MobileMe). I plugged my phone into iTunes and it synced the apps, but not the layout or more importantly, the data. I've already manually redone the app organization, but now realize I'm still missing all my music, photos from the old phone, and all the data in my apps. How do I restore all of this on the new phone? The first time I plugged in the phone to iTunes, I wasn't given the option to restore from a backup, though I did back up the old phone before getting the new one. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!
    Cheers,
    Jen

Ok - I figured out how to restore my phone from the backup of my 3GS, so my app data and photos are back in place, but none of my music transfered from the backup. Thoughts?

  • Is there any way to get photos back from a 'corrupt' backup?

Basically a couple of weeks ago I bought a new iPhone 5S, and the night before I got this phone I made sure to backup my old iPhone 5. When I tried to restore backup my new 5S I waited half an hour thinking it was working but I was shown the message ‘iTunes could not restore the iPhone "*phone name*" because the backup was corrupt or is not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored". I am not particularly interested in backing my phone up to an earlier date my main concern is really all the photos I had on my latest backup.

Did you also have an iCloud backup? Did you enable Photo Stream? Had you ever synced your photos to your computer's photo management app? These would be the easiest ways to recover your photos. Beyond thatyou can try to find them in the backup with a backup extractor app for your computer. You can try googling for "iphone backup extractor". Skip any expensive ones; there are some excellent ones that are free or inexpensive.
