Corrupted Email Archive ?

We have a 3GB email backup file that we're trying to migrate to another server. The imsrestore command restores the first email, then exits:
$ du -sh 060808B.email
2.9G 060808B.email
$ cat 060808B.email | /usr/iplanet/server5/bin/msg/store/bin/imsrestore -f-
Tape Version : 2
Backup Date : Tue, 08 Aug 2006 10:12:22
Message Store : MYMAIL
Block factor : 20
/MYMAIL/groupB
/MYMAIL/groupB/b118dms
/MYMAIL/groupB/b118dms/INBOX
/MYMAIL/groupB/b118dms/INBOX/847
The log seems to indicate that there is an errant value somewhere:

We are using iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 (a component of the Luminis portal) and we are migrating from Windows to Solaris 9. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,
I just tried backing up a single 3GB mailbox (not a group) on an iMS5.2hf2.07 Win2K install and restoring to a iMS5.2hf2.12 Solaris 9 install and this worked fine.
How much manages to get restored before the error you mentioned occurs?
Have you tried backing up/restoring individual accounts rather then a large group backup - does this work?
Are you able to upgrade messaging server to a later hotfix release?
imsbackup -f - doesn't work under windows currently (bug #6449794 - supposed to be fixed in the upcoming iMS5.2hf2.14 patch - contact sun support for a copy).
The 2GB file limit doesn't appear to be a problem for windows specifically which is why you don't need to use the imsbackup -f - option under windows to back up more then 2GB. The issue may be more to do with the backup under one OS and restore under another.
Cheers,
Shane.

• Can I search email archive on iCloud server from iOS device, or can I only search what it has downloaded locally?

Can I search email archive on iCloud server from iOS device, or can I only search what it has downloaded locally?
I currently have an iPhone and iPad, and am soon changing over to a Mac. When that happen I'd like to try to see what I can migrate over from the Google ecosystem to the iCloud ecosystem.
1) Currently I have the Gmail iOS app (a webapp container) that can search server-side of several years of email archive. Can iCloud do this using the iOS native mail application? Or is the search just limited to what the device has downloaded locally?
2) Do I have to use a @me.com address for the full iCloud email sync to take place between server, Mac, and iOS devices?
Believe it or not I've read quite a bit about the iCloud services, but the answers to these questions were far from clear. Many thanks for the help.

2) iCloud only syncs email between .me/.mac addresses. For other accounts like google, you set up the account in the mail app and if they're IMAP accounts, you can sync between the google server and any devices you have defined that account on.
I'm not absolutely sure about 1) since I haven't had to search going back years - I use MailSteward for that on the mac. On my iPhone/iPad, when I go into a mailbox and the emails are not immediately available, it downloads them. I suspect for a search, you need the emails downloaded.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• PDF email archives: How to selectively re-export to new archive/.pst?

A while back, I made PDF email archives of a variety of Outlook folders, and eventually deleted the Outlook messages in question.
Now, unfortunately, I am wishing I had not. So, a few "save the day" type of questions:
1) Can I convert an entire PDF email archive, or portions of an archive, back into Outlook format? How? (If you know the answer to this, ignore the rest!)
2) Can I selectively search a PDF email archive, and then group-export the messages displayed in the search results into a separate PDF email archive? How? I can manage to use the filters to select a group of messages, but I can't manage to re-export them to a new archive or a PDF portfolio.
thanks,
Erik

It cannot be done in InDesign, but, as you surmised in Acrobat.
You'll need to ask in the Acrobat forums. I don't know of any changes like that in Acrobat DC but because I don't program in JavaScript, I might have overlooked it. Try one of these forums:

• Acrobat email archive - after appending old emais disappear from archive

Greetings,
We have created an email archive with the new Acrobat 10/Outlook 2010. When emails are appended to the archive, older emails in the archive disappear. If the archive is sent to someone else with either Acrobat 10 or Acrobat 9, they have the same problem with the archive. What's going on? Any clies out there?
Thanks for your assistance
jeannie

What type of email account do you use? Is the sync slider setting set to sync just a few items? Check in File, Account Settings, double click on the account - the sync slider on that dialog for IMAP, Outlook.com, and Exchange.

• Corrupt .rar archive in windows, how to repair?

Hey, I have an important .rar that is corrupt that I cannot repair via .par2 etc, because it is my own doing.
I just need to get as much of the file data as possible, whether it extracts corrupt or not. My problem is, if I "keep broken files" in WinRar, it truncates the file at the exact point the corruption begins, which is only like 80mb into a 900mb file.
Is there a way to have WinRar acknowlege the file's corrupt, keep extracting to get as close to 900mb original as possible?
I believe this will require third party recovery software. So if there's any good ones out there (even non-freeware), i'll get it as long as it's reputable to work.
Please help me, it would be appreciated! Thanks!

use winrar
right click file
click repair
These actions have to help you. But if that, it is possible to try it:
Get RAR recovery tool and protect corrupted archives from CRC issues and other problems, damaging corrupted RAR archives of any size. This service can be started on any PC workstation so there are no compatibility problems to be considered
before you start the application, this WinRAR fix tool can do the following:
>>Guarantees the full compatibility with WinRAR and any version of the Microsoft Windows operating system;
>>Opens any version of RAR archive, created in compatible WinRAR applications;
>>Evaluates user chances for data restoration in freeware mode;
>>Works even easier than any other file compression program, it is possible due to the absence of additional settings;

• Constant NAV messages re: "infected files/emails/archives"

I'm in the middle of migrating all users from Mac OS X Panther to Mac OS X Tiger, and decided it was a good time to migrate them from Entourage to Mac OS X Mail & Address Book.
However, now users (including me) are getting frequent NAV Repair Alert messages re: infected files/emails/archives. Each message references a specific email (4950.emlx, 3875.emlx, etc.). Yet, when I search in the user's Mail directory using File->Find or Spotlight, I get no hits.
FYI, All updates to Tiger and NAV already applied.
On my machine, the scan details in NAV indicate a file in /private/tmp, but the file and/or directory it refers to doesn't appear to exist.
Same goes for other Macs getting NAV alerts. The scan details in NAV indicate a file in /private/tmp, but the file and/or directory it refers to doesn't appear to exist and I can't locate the .emlx file to delete it either.
My users are getting frustrated at these contant messages coming up on their screen.
Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx in advance,
Eric

• SmartView 11.1.2.5.400 - corrupt zip archive?

Hi,
I have recently downloaded SmartView 11.1.2.5.400 zip and couldn't uncompress it - corrupt zip archive.
I have tried different browsers(IE, Firefox, Chrome etc ) and download sources (eDelivery and OTN).
Has anyone else experienced the same? If so, with whom should we get it touch to have this issue fixed?
Thanks,
Gabriel

For me this still doesn't work - I believe that we are downloading from different "mirrored" sites.
So, while giving up on this approach, I've found an alternate one on the Oracle Support Portal:
Patch 20327649: Patch Set Update: 11.1.2.5.400 for Oracle Smart View for Office
Finally, I have something that works and that it has indeed the indicated size: 124MB
Cheers and thanks for trying to help anyway!

• How do I localize corrupt email file

There is a corrupt email file in one of my mailboxes. I just don't know which one it is.
I was able to isolate the mailbox in which the corrupted file is. When I put the mailbox's folder back in the mail folder (in preferences), start mail.app again, then rebuild the mailbox, it starts spinning and the whole mail.app seems to stall forever and forever until I have to FORCE QUIT. Before doing the rebuilding of that mailbox the app works fine.
I've initially tried to reimport the whole mail folder into a newly initialized mail.app. That's how I know in which mailbox the corrupt file is as it started to import the different mailboxes and stopped at just that one. I even had the number of the file but to my surprise the numbers of the files in the "preferences/mail/" folder are totally different.
I have more than 5000 files in that mailbox, how can I know which one's bugging?
thanks for the help.

Mark,
If you open the Mail folder, and then go to the Mailboxes folder within (where mailboxes you create are stored, and assuming it is not in a mailbox in an Account folder), and open that xxxx.mbox to find the Messages folder, do you not see the 6583.emlx file?
It is possible this file name is the one Mail is assigning during the import, and not the existing one, however, but I can't tell sitting here. In the original, what is the range of numbers on those yyyyy.emlx files?
One way, would be to open the subject xxxx.mbox, then open the Messages folder, and then double click on each yyyyy.emlx file, to see if it will open in Mail. Mail can open individual yyyyy.emlx files in this fashion, but perhaps would choke on the one corrupt.

• AD Sync and Email Archive

I've got a two part question here...
1) When setting up a new Office 365 service, can the service be started before the AD structure is in place, or must there be a directory server prior to starting service?
2) Is email archiving available? Not just email records, but full message archiving.
Thanks

Hi,
For your first question, I would suggest you to post in the dedicated forum of
Office 365 Community, where you can get more experienced responses.
This is the forum to discuss questions and feedback for Microsoft Office client, there is not so much about
Office 365 service/integration aspects here. Thanks for your understanding.
Regarding email archiving, Outlook client has a built-in feature - AutoArchive, which can move old items (full message) you want to keep to an archive, a separate Outlook Data File (.pst) that you can open from Outlook any time you need
it.
Here is reference you'll need:

It's recommended to download and install
Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office

• Recover email archives on DLTtapeIV

So, we have been asked to recover emails archived by a company that retired their Sun Netra T 1405 and StorEdge L280 some years ago. We have no monitor or keyboard but reached the login via terminal session, no problem there. All ok until we enter the root password they have for it: no good and they have no other passwords.
We tried the tapes in a Quantum DLT4 drive but they are not reading and get rejected.
We put together a Solaris x86 10 system but learned through another very informative thread here that our AHA-2940 will not work with the drive (we would need a 2944) but ... even if we got one, I wonder if we are just going down another dead-end alley. Would we be able to reconstruct the archives without the catalogue (which i am presuming is on the Netra)?
Suggestions & recommendations much appreciated!

Hello Jim,
resetting the root password would be great but the two Sun/Solaris experts I have tried to hire for this do not seem to be up to that task, implying that that was not feasible.
Either these are no experts or they rated this as an illegal action.
The procedure requires a CD-ROM drive and a Solaris CD (8, 9 or 10).
If the optional CD-ROM drive isn't installed, you have to use netboot, but this involves setup of a boot server with Solaris ....
If you use google (or any search machine) with the keywords "lost +root +password" (without quotes) you get over twelve thousand (12000) hits.
Some of the descriptions are very detailed (they even take care of the editor used), other show only the direction (mounting the /-filesystem of the disk, making changes to /etc/shadow). The procedure doesn't reveal the former root password, the need to enter the password is removed.
It's not a security breach, because it requires direct access to the system.

• "Corrupt" email breaking ActiveSync

We are having an issue with ActiveSync and the iDEVICES in our environment. We are getting the problem of 'corrupt' emails breaking the ActiveSync connection. All the online fixes i have read simply say to delete the emails which are causing the problem. This seems to be a no-brainer solution, and really isn't an option, as the devices are used by the Mayor and City Counsellor's...can't really tell them to go into their inboxes and start deleting everything.
i'm wondering if there is a more technical solution for this issue.
We are running Exchange 2003 Front End/Back End setup. I have been through the standard permissions setups multiple times, and everything seems good.
Also, could minor mailstore corruption or not using SSL certificates cause these issues.
Please help, i hate having the mayor looking over my shoulder...thanks

Try this:
Navigate to: Users / you / Library / Mail. Find the folder corresponding to your email account. {Mine is called "POP-([email protected])}. In that folder there is a folder called INBOX.mbox. Inside that is a folder called Messages.
You can delete a message without opening it by trashing the file from that Messages folder. The files have names like 71057.emlx. Make sure you delete only the correct one. You can identify it by its size. Or, to make sure you have only the culprit in the folder, you can temporarily move any messages in your Inbox into another folder, leaving only the corrupted one. Of course, do this before navigating to the Messages folder.

• .Mac Mail as Email Archive

Ok, with the 10 gig now available for .Mac, there is now enough storage for me to consider using my .Mac account to store my historical emails.
Yes, yes, I'm a pack-rat of emails and I have some going back to 1999 (yes...I know)
So my question is: Do I keep things local or now use my .Mac account as off site storage? Specifically in this post, for my email.
I ask this because I've already experienced a catastrophic drive failure (on an external device) and lost a lot of memories and other things and I'm looking for permanent options for backup, recovery and storage (I have another post asking about this as well).

Just to close this question, I've done a lot of experimenting lately and found out several things:
Using .Mac as an email archive works great. It's a real hassle consolidating your emails depending on where they are, what's supported (POP3, IMAP, Web), but with a little sweat equity I got it to work. I have emails spread across Yahoo, Hotmail, Google, and .Mac and was able to get things consolidated to .Mac mail.
The worst was getting emails from old Windows Outlook files (PST). This involved a crazy amount of Googling and trial and error, but between Thunderbird and Entourage I was able to get things consolidated.
Now that Google supports IMAP, I'm not sure moving my Google stuff to .Mac was necessary. If you primarily use Mail.app, you can now connect to Google via IMAP as well as .Mac all in a single interface and copy between the two without messing around with POP3.
If you use .Mac web, you'll only be able to see your .Mac folders unless you want to download via POP3 (works, but not ideal) or have other accounts forward to .Mac (a hassle to setup if you don't know what you are doing).
Anyway, question resolved.

• Email archiving option not available

There are 2 email accounts active (Gmail and iCloud). When I swipe on a message, the option to delete it appears, but not archiving. I read that there is a setting to activate email archiving, but I cannot find it anywhere. If it matters, archiving is activated on the mac where the iPhone syncs. Thank you for your help!
