Corrupted files being saved over network

I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2008 model and I am having some interesting issues that i can't seem to find the answer for. I switched offices recently and am now plugged in directly via Ethernet cable to our main Cisco router instead of a small under the desk hub shared by 3 computers, that iu used to use with no issues. Since i moved i am having trouble with files getting corrupted when i save to the XP server (peer to peer).
For example in InDesign CS3 i save a file and it will crash InDesign then corrupt the file. If i work on my hard drive, there are no issues. This week it started happening to Excel CSV files. I save them and open them no problem, but when they are used in any of our software on other computers that imports CSV files, they do not recognize the files as CSV.
Yesterday I downloaded some CSV files from an offsite FTP and saved to the server. I did not open them, but they had some weird additional characters in them, that showed up in our other software. I went on a PC downloaded them again and the CSV were fine. So i am starting to think it is some sort of network connection glitch.
Just wondering if any one has any ideas? It is getting to be a bigger and bigger problem each day.
Thanks in advance.

These days programs have safe guards in them to stop loading a file that they cannot. Adobe products in particular I know should give you a message that they cannot read this file. How are you downloading these files from the server? What service or protocol?

  • How do I revert to replaced audio files being saved with the project file, *not* with the original audio files?

In the latest release, when you send an audio clip to Audition, the newly created audio clip - which was previously saved in the same folder as the project file - is saved next to the original audio file.
Makes sense, but for reasons to boring to go into, it's a major headache for my workflow, because it means combing through folders to find the files, instead of having them all in once place.
So how to I turn this off and revert to those files being saved next to the project file?

  • Photoshop CC OSX 10.9 - saving over network

Hi, I've done a couple of searches for this problem but havent found any similair situations.
I am having a problem with files which are 'dissapearing' when canceling a file from saving. For example - I am working on a large file and press 'save and close' but realise I don't need to save as the only change I have made since the previous save is something like turning a layer visibility on/off, so I press cancel. Then what I would of done is just close without saving, as I havent made any changes. However now the file has dissapeared.
    System info:
    Mac os X 10.9
Photoshop CC - latest update ( as of 19_3_14)
Saving to - HDD on a duplicate system over ethernet network.
I few tests I have done are-
Saving to desktop/internal HDD of workstation - File doesn't dissapear when cancelling a save.
Another computer in the same network on OS X 10.8 (PS CC) - File doesn't dissapear when cancelling a save.
(This makes me think it is a Photoshop CC/Mavericks issue.)
I've read that adobe does not support saving over a network, but I thought I would ask if anyone else has had/resolved this issue.
We have multiple workstations working in the same network folders, so saving files to desktop then copying over isn't a time effective option unfortunately.

Photoshop CC (internal version 14.2.1) does have a number of fixes that are better than Photoshop CS6 in regard to network saving.  Be sure to choose Help -> Updates to get the latest version of Photoshop CC. If you are on Mac OS X, please be sure to at least be running 10.8.5 as there were also network save fixes at the OS level that will help customers.

  • Files wrongfully 'saving over' other files

    Hi there,
I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I am having that only seems to be happening more often now.
Occasionally when I save a photoshop document as a pdf, if will save over another file.
For example, I made a photoshop document and saved it titled "anzacdaypoppies.psd" and then I made a .pdf version of this and saved it to my desktop.
A few days later I made another document and saved it titled "Travellogcover.psd". This I did not make into a .pdf.
But I have now noticed that the "travellogcover.psd" is not able to be found on my computer, but when I open the "anzacdaypoppies.pdf" it is now a .pdf of my "travellogcover". This is the first time I seem to have completely lost a .psd file and it has 'saved over' ?? a .pdf.
Usually, my issue is a .pdf saving over another .pdf. As an example I had one .pdf saved and titled "adventcards" and then I created a new photoshop document, saved it as a .psd, and then printed to .pdf and saved as "menuplan". When opening "adventcards" I get the "meuplan" but not vice versa, so "adventcards.pdf" has been completely 'saved over' and it's lucky I still have the .psd so I don't have to re-do all the work.
However yesterday after noticing the 'saving over' of the anzacdaypoppies.pdf with a photoshop document and now that photoshop document is now gone I am worried I won't always be able to rely on the photoshop document being safe.
I am really sorry - I know I'm not explaining it very well but I have no idea what is happening here. I've looked for answers online but I'm not finding anything.
Anyone understand what I'm talking about? Is there something simple I'm missing to stop this from happening?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

I repeat that under 10.7.x, cmd + S upon a document which was already stored on disk isn't dedicated to save something in the file.
It save datas in the hidden folder dedicated to Versions, the feature allowing us to navigate in different states of our documents.

  • "Create ACC Version" without files being saved in iTunes?

Hi, I want to create ACC versions of all the songs in of my iTunes library to put on my external hard drive. The problem is, once i create the ACCs, they're saved in iTunes, so now i have 2 different formats of every song. I have changed the iTunes media folder location to save on my external hard drive, but i still end up with duplicates for some reason. Is there a way to create the ACC versions without them being saved in iTunes? Thanks.

If you haven't used Smart Playlists before, review the page at the link below to learn some more.
Then create one using "Kind" as a criteria. You can set it to include only ACC files (you can use "Get Info" on a file to examine details and identify what the field values are).

  • Files being saved when i don't save them

I was browinf thought my finder the other day, and found several things (electric bill PDF, etc), that I had viewed, but NOT saved, that were saved to my computer anyway. Wnyone know why this happened? I don't want everything little thing I look at being saved, when i don't need it.

What's beeping? The MainStage instrument or the keyboard?
Normally a keyboard sends a simple Note Off command when a key is released. Have you looked at the MIDI info coming into MainStage to see if that is what is being received, and to make sure the MK425 is not programmed to send something else when a key is released?

  • Missing files when copying over network

I've had a good search for people with similar problems on Discussions, and there are a few mentions of similar occurences. Here's my summary though.
I have 2 Macs, and frequently transfer files from one to the other by sharing drives and using the Finder.
However, quite often, when transferring lots of files, they are sucessfully copied but do not show in Finder on the receiving machine. The files are there (using Terminal to explore the directory reveals the files in question), but Finder just doesn't acknowledge any existence of the "missing" files.
This problem can usually be cured by creating a new folder in one of the affected folders - this somehow kicks Finder into refreshing the folder's contents.
Removing the .DS_Store file(s) (again, via Terminal) in the copied folder also resolves this issue, leading me to believe that the problem lies with the .DS_Store files.
I cannot believe I am not the only user who frequently finds themselves having to do uneccesary Terminal work to reveal files which appear to be missing after copy over the network.
Is Apple aware of this problem? Does anyone else have any workarounds?

I don't think I have experienced that exact problem however, I am such a Unix geek, I typically do my in-network transfers between Mac machines using SCP at the shell prompt in Terminal.
Finder refresh on the other hand I have experienced before although I cannot provide a situation or example.
Usually if it needs a refresh, I believe all I ever do is navigate away from the folder, then back to it. Or if it is the Desktop in question, using Exposé to show it, a single click on an empty space there will make the newly copied items appear.

  • Mac corrupts file names on Windows network

I am using my MacBook with Tiger on a Windows peer-to-peer network. Works fine, except occasionally files names that I access on one of the Windows machines will become confused. It's occurrence seems random to me; I think it only happens when I save changes, though. So, for instance, the file OnlineAccountInformation.xls would become OnlineAcco%32hg.xls. Any idea what might be causing this? I had the same problem with Panther.

well ther eis a 32 char limit for a file name .and an 80-something limit for the total path i think. Usually though i get an error message that just says so much or simply that an erro occured and the file couldnt be saved. Also if you have a super long name that youve saved on the windows machine youll usually get the DOS name of the file when browsing from a mac.

  • Corrupts file when saving

I'm working in 2010 version and saving back to 2003 for those who don't have a more current version. When I finish my edits and save, it all looks fine.  I often put a date filter on it and filter out the 100% complete tasks. If I save it with those
filters on, and I open the file back up, I'm missing data. There are blank lines. Lines are relocated so the schedule is completely scrambled.  It takes me hours to recreate it.

    Igash3,
Do you have SP2 installed for Project 2010? If not, you need to install it because it fixes many version compatibility issues. For users who have Project 2003, it is imperative they have SP3 installed.
Here's an idea, rather than applying any filters before you save, why not just save as Project 2003 and let the users apply the filter.
It sounds like your file has become corrupt. That can happen if you are operating between Project versions. You might try saving the Project 2010 file as XML and then re-open in Project 2010 (Note: you will lose any custom formatting).
    Hope this helps.

  • Printer connected to Windows 7 computer remains offline despite being shared over network to imac

My new imac is connected directly to my HP printer. I am trying to connect from another room my old PC running Windows 7 also to this printer over my home network. I have the same workgroup on both computers, and have activated sharing. As far as I can see, I have followed all the standard instruction for sharing. The PC  has identified the printer and the printer has been selected, but print documents have been placed in a queue to print since it states it is offline. How do I get it back on line?

  • Security Issues with SMB affect MS Office files being slow from Network locations

On our windows 7 machines our users our having slowness issue opening Office files from a network location
This slowness only affect domain users.  Domain admins have no slowness issues.
Make changes to trusted documents ro trusted location.  Trust network location has no affect.
If I disable SMB them domain users can open Office files from network location with no slowness.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Navar,
There has been a lot of discussions about the performance impact of SMB.
When SMB is enabled, communications to and from Windows clients will experience a significant impact on performance, which affects both the clients and the server. This is kind of by design.
    More reference:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj852239(v=ws.10).aspx
So if you have identified that SMB is causing the performance issues, you can disable SMB on any of your Windows clients that do not require protection.

  • Files saved to network server sometimes get deleted

    Hello,
I work as a graphic designer using a year old iMac and latest version of Photoshop CS5.
Every now and then when saving a .psd file with photoshop it will get deleted instead. As an example, lets say I'm working on a brochure cover image. I open photoshop, open the file and work couple of hours on it. Then I save it. File gets deleted and is now no where to be found. Assuming no backups it's lost for good.
Naturally I use backups so this usually only means I've at most lost a days worth of work, but it's still highly irritating as you can get quite a bit done during one day.
What I've figured out so far:
    1) Only .psd files get deleted and only by photoshop. Illustrator, Premiere, Indesign are unaffected.
    2) Only files that are being saved on network (Buffalo) drive get deleted. Files saved on my macs hard disk have not gone lost so far.
    3) It seems that when I use "Save As" the files save correctly. Only when using "Save" do they get deleted.
    4) File getting deleted does not happen every time. But it does happen around 20-30% of the time when saving.
My current solution is to keep file browser open at all times. And every time I save file with Photoshop I check it's still there. If it's been deleted I will save it again with new name. As long as it's still open in Photoshop I can still save it.
Due to my work place, saving on the Buffalo is currently the only realistic solution. I realise this is not a Photoshop only problem. It has a lot to do with the network drive as well. How ever as Photoshop is the only program affected it seemed like a good idea to post it here as well. We've been in contact with Buffalo and they deny any knowledge about this problem, so we've hit a brickwall there anyway.
Has anyone else run into this or similar problem? Any suggestions besides taking more backups?

    2) Only files that are being saved on network (Buffalo) drive get deleted.
There you have it – Adobe’s position with regard to Photoshop is: »Adobe Systems does not provide support for networks and removable media.«

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/902/cpsid_90279.html
In case you are interested there are threads on this, for example

One workaround might be to always do Save As’ as you claim those work; this could be automated with a Script for example.

  • Problem involving saving over indesign file and pdf

Kind of a strange one this one....
I'm currently working on a magazine and have several InDesign files in one folder that i'm working on and a seperate folder where I have saved exported pdf versions of these files. The files are the same names in ach folder eg '1 - 40'  '2 - 39' and so on
I accidentally saved over one of my InDesign files so I understand I will not be able to recover it as I wasnt using any backup utility.
However before I saved over the file I had created a pdf version of it and saved it in my pdf folder.  So i'm thinking not all is lost as I can use the pdf file to send to the printers.
Now here's the strange bit - I am using PC and when I open explorer I can see the folder icon where all my pdf files are saved and can actually see the 'lost/saved over' pdf version as one of the mini thumbnails for that folder - but when I click on the folder to view the files inside it isnt there - instead it shows a thumbnail of the file i saved over it with...!?!
I'm thinking is there somekind of automatic updating PDF export setting that I may have selected or is it possible that folder icon is using a snapshot of what was inside at a certain point??
Either way I could really do with recovering this PDF - if anyone has any suggestions i'm more than happy to hear them.
    Thanks
    Mark

i thought this would help a little
This is the folder icon - in which all my pdf's are.  The top left thumbnail is the 'missing/saved over' pdf.  So you'd think it would be in there?
Below is a view of the contents of that folder - (for those of you with good eyesight) you can see that the top left thumbnail from the above picture is nowhere to be seen in this folder!!

  • Files deleted over network

Hi, some of users over the network accidentally deleted a folder from XServe, and he asked if it can be recovered, when someone deletes a file/folder over network OSX reports that "the item will be deleted immediately", is this true? it wont going to be stored in some "Network Trash Folder"? or ".Trashes"? or "Temporary Items"??
And if it really wont be recovered, is there a way to prevent this in the future? like to tell OSX Server to put all the files/folders deleted over network to be stored in a special folder for a certain time to prevent loosing important files accidentally or by other users??
    Thanks

Bertrand> This seems a nice idea, but its not exactly what i need, people still need to delete files from the server, but sometimes they delete important things and im looking for a way that the OSX Server keeps the remotely deleted file for a certain amount of time so it can be restored if needed. many times users accidentally delete files from the server and hit the "OK" button without noticing they just delete an important file from the server and not from there HD, for example, in Apple Share IP on OS9 if you delete a file over the network it would keep it in the user Trash and he empties it, and if he for example restarted his computer, the file on the ASIP would be stored in "Network Trash Folder".. why the mighty OSX Server doest have this great ability?!
Steve> Tapes is great for backup and archiving, but its not what i am really looking for, it has the same problem i have with Time Machine, time machine wont backup a file copied to the server and accidentally deleted within an hour, so Tapes, wont backup a file copied and deleted within a day..
WelshDog2> just a question: if i dont have any partition on my XRAID, how can i make it backup its self on its own HD's?! is this possible?! it wont solve my problem but its good to know if this can be done..
Thank you all guys for your replies, i really appreciate it..

  • How can i recover a word document if another file saved over it

A file was saved over an original by mistake.  How can I recover the original file?

Assuming your son is working on your OS X 10.6 iMac.
If Pages was setup to automatically create a backup of the file when saved, you should be able to look on the disk for that file name with "backup of" appended to the file name.  Otherwise, unless Word saves versions of a document (I'm not familiar enough with Word to know), so that an earlier version of the document is available, the original document is written over and gone.
Do you use Time Machine to backup your system? There may be a copy of the essay there from the hourly backups.
