Corrupted fonts Gone from Font Book / problem remains

_I have spent all day paying for the recklessness of installing fonts willy-nilly , I have now learned of font valication, and dozens of new things but, after using advice from Dr.Smokes' eBook & other sources, I still get such pages as the Apple start-up full of upside-down looking junk !
Can anyone help my addled, swollen brain, & point me towards the next step, or where to find it
~~TIA~~ --=Dave t_

Hi, Dave:
1. You've not provided any of the useful details needed to help solve your problem. For example:1.1. What fonts did you install?
1.2. How and where did you install them?
1.3. What fonts have you since removed?
1.4. How, and from where, did you remove them? The people answering questions here are not clairvoyant. WIthout such details, there's little to nothing that can be done to help you.
2. If I assume you installed them via Font Book, and did not change Font Book's default preferences for where fonts are installed, then:2.1. The fonts you installed are probably in your Home > Library > Fonts folder. If so, either trash them or create a new folder on your desktop and drag all the fonts in your Home > Library > Fonts folder to such. Assure your Home > Library > Fonts folder is empty.
2.2. Then, clear your font cache: see my "Undoing Font Book" FAQ or the "Reset Font Book" section in my book.
2.3. Also, clear your browser's cache. If you are using Safari, then press Command-Option-E.3. If none of the above helps, or if you may have trashed system-related fonts, then the next thing I would suggest is performing an Archive and Install of Mac OS X. See either the "Archive and Install" chapter in my book or my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
You know how to reach me if any of the above requires further clarification.
Good luck!

  • Can't Remove Certain Font Families From "Font Book" 4.1

Having gone through my new 2013 iMac's "Font Book" files, and deleted those fonts that I don't feel are relivent for me, I stlll find the following OSX installed fonts not able to be removed from "Font Book" 4.1, under the "all fonts" and "computer" sidebar menu listing:
Can't remove these ten font families:
    - Baoli SC
    - Lantinghei SC
    - Lantinghei TC
    - Libian SC
    - Wawati SC
    - Wawati TC
    - Weibei SC
    - Weibei TC
    - Xingkai SC
    - Yuanti SC
I was able to remove/delete many fonts by simply using "command + mouse click" to bring up a pop-up menu window that gave me the option to "Remove (Font Name) Family".
In the ten fonts, listed above, the "Remove (Font Name) Family" selection is greyed out.
If I select the "Enable (Font Name) Family" in the pop-out options selection window, for each of the ten fonts above, I am presented with a "Font Book" top pop-up window ... indicating that the fonts have to be "Downloaded in Order to be Enabled".
Even if I get the ten fonts above, downloaded to "Font Book" 4.1 ... when I go back to the pop-out option window to remove the font family (not greyed out now), and select "Remove (Font Name) Family", the downloaded family fonts in that main folder are deleated, but the main folder is still there .... and can't be removed.
Even though the ten font families listed above have been turned "OFF" by me, or "disabled" ... is there some way to get these remaining font folders out of my "Font Book" 4.1 app window.
    Any ides or thoughts?

    DavidMac wrote:
It's kind of strange, since all of these remaining ten font families are "international" fonts, which you would assume Apple would allow an "English" font user to delete.
Apple is really not interested in helping users delete fonts.  In iOS it's impossible to  either add or remove them, and we can only hope OS X keeps what flexibility it currently has.  In addition, Apple gets over 60% of its revenue from abroad, with China probably the major engine for future sales growth, so it has gone an extra mile to make the OS more attractive to Chinese users.  This includes the ten font families which Apple prefers, probably for size reasons, to install only if the user wants them enabled, but has to keep the names present so the Chinese user will know he can have them if he wants them.
It's not totally clear to me why you want to remove things.  Can't you just use the Collection column to keep the list you see limited to English or whatever?

  • Panic:  All addresses gone from Address book

    Goodness me: I'm toast:
All my addresses disappeared. It has been months since I backed up the Vcards.
I was adding addressess, and my address book (and mail program) froze up (spinning beach ball of death). Did a force quit and reboot.
Nothing in address book accept my suer name email and Apple web site.
Am I toast? Can I recover??
    help!
    JON

    Hi,
In Mail, to create a vCard for a specific contact, select them from the list and right-click (Control-click) on their name. From the pop-up menu choose "Export vCard...".
To create a vCard that contains the information for all the people in a certain group, select the group you want from the list, right-click on it and choose "Export Group vCard...".
Add (import) the addresses into Address Book
    1. Open the Address Book application.
    2. Choose Import from the File menu.
    3. Navigate to the file that you exported from your previous application and select it from the list of files. Tip: if you cannot select the file, the Open button will not pulsate. This may indicate that the file is not in a format that Address Book can read.
    4. Click Open.
Your addresses (contacts) are now available for use in Address Book and all Mac OS X applications that work with Address Book.

  • Fonts missing in Font Book ( empty )

    Hello
Around the time I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard I realized I started having problems whith my fonts until I realized the whole Font collection from Font book was missing.
When I try to access fonts from TextEdit, the process takes a good 30 sec before the Fontbook content is visible.
As mentioned in the forum, I tried to dump the fontbook.plist in preference - with no results.
    any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

I have the exact same problem! Won't render in Keynote, either. I'm using Lion (10.7.5).

  • Fonts missing from CS6 after restarting laptop

I've installed (and reinstalled) open-type Stone fonts on a new laptop with Windows 7x64 and CS6.  After restarting the laptop, why are the fonts gone from the list of fonts available in CS6?  I have to reinstall them each time I turn the laptop on.

Nothing to do with Adobe. Some security tool or your system restore is removing them to retain a specific state or you do not have proper permissions to make permanent changes on your system in the first place.

  • User fonts missing from book but still in folder

Help. My user fonts suddenly don't show up in font book. I've tried all the standard fixes.
    - restarted in SAFE mode.
    - cleared the font cache
    - verified the disc
    - repaired permissions
    - reinstalled both font book and the user font folder from an older version in Time Machine
    - Verified all the fonts.
I haven't tried tossing them in another user account yet because I find the idea of having to reset up the entire user account alarming. Is there anything else I can try? These fonts all worked just days ago.
If I click on the fonts in the user folder they come up 'installed' and reappear. But as soon as I close and reopen fontbook they disappear again.
Here's the general console readout (the short version, there is a lot more of the same.)

This might be too late to help Starhorsemac, but I just solved a nearly identical problem on my iMac running Mountain Lion.
The problem turned out to be that the fontd lauchd agent had been disabled for my account.  Re-enabling the agent made all of my user fonts re-appear in Font Book.
To check and see if fontd is running, open a terminal window and type:
launchctl list | grep -i fontd
If fontd is running, you'll get a line similar to this:
         154     -     com.apple.fontd
If fontd is running, your problem is different than mine.
If fontd is not running, you can start it with this command:
launchctl load -wF -D system com.apple.fontd
I hope someone finds this useful.

  • Font book problems 10.9

    Hi guys,
Can anyone help with this issue of Font Book not loading fonts?
They've all gone hideaway since upgrading, and as a graphic designer it's a nightmare as I only have a handful to choose from.
    I'm on 10.9.2
I use the Adobe CC apps.
    Help or a link please
    Thank you!

  • Having Font Book problems since upgrading to Tiger.

Once I upgrade to Panther, I pitched Suitcase, and have been using Font Book exclusively for activating Fonts and such.
After upgrading to Tiger font book has basically rendered itself worthless for me. At least half of my old font wont load through font book. On alot of my type 1 fonts, if I drag them to Font Book, then the font will appear to be loaded and activated, but actually only the scren font was copied to the fonts folder (user/library/fonts). If I manually copy the fonts into this folder, then they sow up in my Adobe apps (CS2), but still print lo res.
For now I have ditched Font Book, and have been using Font Explorer X, and it works flawlessly, but I'd rather use Font Book if I can get it to behave, as I like the interface better.
In addition, I am also unable to load many PC TT fonts through Font Book Tiger, that I had no problem loading through FB in Panther.
Any Ideas, or is it just buggy?

Well, Font Book under Tiger is still buggy, but it's better than under Panther, and not buggy in the ways you describe, so there's something else going on.
Adobe apps will "load" a bitmapped font into their menus but then tell you, if you select them, that the printer file is missing and printing will be at lo-res, which is what you're describing. You say you "manually copy these fonts to the folder"; by "these fonts" are you referring to the printer files (which you said were not being copied to the Users fonts folder thru Font Book)?
The mystery is how Font Book is helping you install fonts which are apparently bitmap suitcases without copying the printer files along with it to the target folder.
So, a couple of things to check, choosing just one or two of the problem fonts to manipulate:
-When you "drag to Font Book" where are you dragging them? Depending on where you drop them, they could go to the default Install folder (set in Preferences), or someplace else. If you drag them to the Classic Mac OS library in Font Book, that could let you install bitmap-only suitcase fonts (without their PostScript companions). These will only show up in Classic apps and in Adobe apps, as described above.
-Might your suitcase files have both TrueType and bitmapped versions of a font inside? That might explain why only the suitcase file is being installed thru Font Book - it's just ignoring the bitmap.
In all, it still "feels" like a problem of bitmaps without their printer files... did you rename the printer files, by any chance? That will keep the OS from finding them at print time.
Did you clean everything up after ditching Suitcase? I don't know what artifacts you might be dealing with.
As for the PC TTs that worked before but not now... that's the real puzzler.
In both cases - your Type 1s and TTs, what happens when you put them right into the Fonts folder, bypassing Font Book.
Get back with more info, and we'll get back with more analysis...

  • There is a problem with the photo with the filename "null". The full resolution version of this photo either cannot be located or is corrupt. Please replace this photo or delete it from your book.

    Absolutely INFURIATING.
I have spent absolute hours building a photo album for the first year or my sons life. Sorting through quite literally thousands and thousands of images. Got a brilliant looking album using 177 of them.
Now everytime I try to check out it won't get past page 1 of building the book.
It says the following "There is a problem with the photo with the filename "null". The full resolution version of this photo either cannot be located or is corrupt. Please replace this photo or delete it from your book.".
The images all look perfect. I have even tried taking them out and re adding the first page images from the library.
    Same problem.
This is so annoying. So far I have NOT been happy with this iphoto application having nothing but problems with missing thumbnails. Corrupted images. Things that have never happened to me using a windows machine.

Do the filenames contain special characters, like "ä,ü,..." or white space or are the vry long? Is there anything special about the image format? Try to export the edited versions in that case and reimport it with a different, shorter filename.
For testing, create a new book with only the images you want to check.
If this does not fix it, try rebuilding. Depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the library.

  • Windows True Type font fine in Font Book but not in some apps

I got a Windows True Type font from a guy having some issues with it when printing website on Windows XP and I thought I'd try the font on Mac OS X 10.4.4.
It imports fine into Font Book and previews fine. When I opened up TextEdit the font can be seen in the list of fonts, but when one selects it changes to the Monaco font instead of the "real" font seen in Font Book.
In Word the font don't show up at all but in Photoshop it seems to work fine.
The font is validated fine according to Font Book.
How come it behaves like this?

    Thanks for your reply.
"OCR-A BT" is the name of the font.
The origin I don't know about. I just got it from a guy I barely know.
I know there can be various problems with fonts. Just thought it was interesting that Font Book validated and showed it fine, but still it didn't seem to be all healthy since it doesn't work in all app.

  • FF 6.0 on Mac OS 10.6.7 shows crazy font on some sites. Prefs fonts are not controlling the problem.

Many websites are fine but some (craigslist, google homepage, others) show a gothic font upon loading. I can't get it to change with the prefs settings. I re-installed FF but problem persists.

  • FontBook corrupted ? adding back Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled

    Hi everyone,
similar to many other people i got some of my fonts screw up after MS Office installation.
I tried to restore default fonts in FontBook, but it claimed that some fonts are missing.
There are no fonts in my ~/Library folders: Fonts, Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled.
However, there some in /Library: Fonts (Removed), Fonts Disabled which I would like to bring back.
So the question is - how to do it?
In /Library/Fonts Disabled   i see Arial, Timew New Roman, Verdana, Wingdings. I guess all of them were disabled by MS installation
and then replaced by MS versions.
My FontBook however does not show me those (e.g. I see no Times New Roman at all, so I can't re-enable it).
I suppose FontBook database is corrupted, so I should restart with Shift in safe mode and then FontBook should be fine, right?
What do I do with /Library/Fonts (Removed)  to bring in back in a propper way? Will FontBook also be able to see those and propose their restoration?
I would appreciate if someone could say with confidence what to do step by step to add Fonts (Removed) and Fonts Disabled back in use. I don't have a TimeMachine running (yet, plan to do it soon), and I use Mac for work, so i would prefare to minimize risks of messing the whole thing up myself
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards,
    Denis.

    My 2¢
Goto Versiontracker.com and download "Linotype FontExplorer X"
Move your Font Book preferences from your (Library/Preferences) folder and then make an archive of Font Book (Control-click, create archive in the Finder)
    Delete the original.
    Now, install/launch FontExplorer X.
There is an option to clean font caches during install - do that and your Mac will reboot.
Now, there is an option under the tools menu in FontExplorer X that sets your system font folders back to defaults - do that.
You should be good to go. FontExplorer X is free and an excellent font manager.
If you have any questions, post back.

  • Font Book does not recognize fonts in /library/fonts

I just did an erase and install. I chose to install extra fonts into the system and this wierd problem just started yesterday. Font Book will not recognize the fonts in the /library/fonts folder. Font book will not even install additional fonts in this state. I restarted the computer and that seemed to fix the problem. But now it's back again. I think it happened after I woke the computer from sleep mode, however the problem does not appear everytime I wake the computer up. I noted the following entries in the system log that seem to coincide with the problem after waking the system.

Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it?

Well, I'm glad trashing the fonts cache fixed that problem. Font conflicts have been known to totally screw up things like MS Office. Whether or not it could screw up launchd, I don't know. But, if the problem doesn't resurface, then it definitely did.
However, I'd send a bug report on the launchd crash to Apple and include the crash report. Send bug reports and enhancement requests to Apple via its Bug Reporter system. Go to <https://connect.apple.com/MemberSite> and join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Then, go to <https://bugreport.apple.com/>, click on the Login to the Apple BugReporter link (using your ADC username and password), and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering. If your item isn't fixed with a new update, you can fire a follow-up on your original, via e-mail.

  • Where have my fonts gone?!

I'm using keynote '07 but since installing Leopard something weird seems to have happened to my fonts. I'm sure that you usually have access to all the fonts (and so can change text on a slide to any font, regardless of the theme, right?) but now when i open the fonts pane there's only 3 or 4 fonts there. All the fonts are still in my main fontbook, so what do I need to do in order to get Keynote to recognise them?

I tried using the Font Book - "Remove Duplicates" and made sure there are no more duplicate fonts installed. It DOES NOT appear to have fixed the font problem (the number of versions of the same class presentation are proliferating as I try to fix this before tomorrow).
Additionally, the Font Book Duplicates fix DID NOT fix Keynote from crashing. The only thing that seems to be working is what another poster wrote on another thread - I am changing each and every font manually from Helvetica or Arial back to Gil Sans, Garamond or Futura - and that seems to be working so far (other than the 4 hours I've spent on getting slides back to where they were in July....)
