Corrupted Hard drive help!

Hi
I am running a 2010 27" Imac with Snow Leopard which has a corrupted partition (on the Mac OS side, I have windows on bootcamp which is running fine). I have all my data backed up with Time Machine on an external hard drive. I managed to verify the disk with disc utility once and that told me about the corruption, however since then I have been unable to boot into the snow leopard partition at all to try and repair it. I have lost my original installation disc and purchased a new one to discover it was an older version and wouldn't work and I can't find the disc with the right verison anywhere so I can't boot from disc either.
I downloaded Macdrive onto my windows partition, which can now see the mac side but can't open it or repair it because of the corruption.
I'm at a loss of what to do now, save taking my IMac into an Apple store which is a big hassle. Any help or suggestions would be much appriciated!

Well, here's something you can do if you can access an Intel Mac that will boot from 10.6.3:
Get a 16 GB USB flash drive or a blank partition of similar or greater size on a USB disk drive. Install the basic Snow Leopard system onto the USB device. Download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 and update the installation to 10.6.8. This will boot your computer. You can then use the Disk Utility to try and repair your hard drive. You can also install copies of any third-party utilities on it such as Disk Warrior. And, if needs be you can erase the internal hard drive and simply clone the 10.6.8 system directly to it from the USB device.

  • Corrupt Hard driver - Help  :(

    Hi All
This is the first time i've used this discussion board, so am hoping there are some clever people out there that know more about the mac than i do.  Anyway I've had this I mac 4 years now and it's done me well, very well.  However I know have issues I really need help with
over the past 3 month it's seriously slowed down and become very unresponsive, even as I'm typing this the spinning ball appears, it's like it's hard for it to keep up with the average task.  I tunes constantly freezes (100g), safari becomes unresponsive I have to force quit, even opening applications file is extremely slow and the images take a while to load.  It's become extremely frustrating that am considering replacing for a new one, which isn't cheap
So issues, run disk utility, previously, permissions don't match, directory not found, and now I have the following (invalid sibling link)  HD cannot be repaired start up from another disk to repair volume.
I am assuming that the hard drive is on it's way out, I can't find the start up disk to reinstall.
What are my best options, buy a new disk and reinstall leapord, I have a 1T ext hd so backing up my mac hd won't be an issue.
If I back up all the files and reinstall will the hd become corrupt again from the old data??
    Your feedback is appreciated
    thanks

    Thanks for your reply people
following on from my previous issue a corrupt hd. Ive done the bold move and reinstalled os x original 10.4 tiger. Wow massive difference to snow leapord.......
So it runs super quick n smootbh UNTIL i tranfer mp3s from my ext hd to i tunes.  all ok until near the end and the whole system freezes.  Shut down and reboot. All ok. Open up itunes and again crashes.  So reinstalled os x again.
My assumption is i must have some corrupt mp3s for i tunes to crassh and the whole os x not responding.
My question is how do i identify the corrupt mp3s.  Preferably a quick and effective way.  Having 80g of mp3s will not be quick. But is there a app or software that scan the files.  Baring in mind the mp3s are not in i tunes yet
Some assist will be much appreciated
Ps. The i mac seems hot on the left side compared to right. Definatly a differencr in temperature. Is this an issue or normal
again ur knowledge is very much appreciated.

  • CORRUPT HARD DRIVE ON I POD

I have had my 3rd generation 20GB i pod for 18 months and the file logo appeared recently. I decided to take it to my local Apple store on Regent Street and was informed that my i pod had a corrupt hard drive. I asked the shop assistant what he could recommend and he said that because my i pod was out of warrenty they couldn't do anything apart from send it off to Apple which would cost me in the region of £200! This is outrageous! Can anyone help, my i pod cost me £350 and i really don't think that i should have to fork out £200 to get it fixed.

Ii don't know if this would help you, but if you have DiskWarrior perhaps you can restore the Directory in the iPod drive. I have never done this, so I don't know for sure if it will work. You also might try using Apple's DiskUtility to repair the drive...

  • HT1386 I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore.  Now my iTunes says my iPhone 5 is no longer an authorized device.  What should I do?

I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore.  I had to rebuild my iTunes Library by dragging my music folders in my iTunes Media into the iTunes Application and rebuild my playlists manually.  After plugging my iPhone 5 into the computer USB, it immediately recognized my iPhone 5, showing: last backups, space left on my iPhone & all options available.  I then checked the box to manually manage music etc.  The problem I am now having is that when I actually try to drag music from my iTunes to my phone a prompt comes up saying that my iPhone is not an authorized device.  What should I do?  Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    jrmetzger,
iOS runs on iPads and iPhones; OS X runs on Macs.
Given your situation, I’d highly recommended that you purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter, so that you can test both your old disk and your new disk externally, since it might be that the problem is due to a faulty internal SATA cable rather than due to faulty disks.

  • My macbook pro hard drive went bad and i bought a new one and installed it. Now i have the old corrupted hard drive in my hand and i am looking to recover my files from it, any suggestions please? too bad i never backed them up.

After you have installed the OSX on the new HDD in your MBP, install the old HDD in an enclosure and connect it to your MBP via USB.  Then try to drag and drop  your data to the new HDD.
If this proves unsuccessful, you may look for data recovery software on the Internet.  There will be free trails to see if it will work or not.  If the trial suggests that it will work, then you will have to purchase the software.
The last resort is a professional data recovery service that will offer NO guarantees and charge a lot of money.
As you now can appreciate, backups eliminate such predicaments.
    Ciao.

  • VM leak led to corrupted hard drive.

I am running 10.7.4 with a 250 GB solid state drive. Space is a big issue for me since I do bioinformatics w large files using genome data. One program I need to use for work exonerate, has a big memory leak issue in OSX. It's not the only program that does, I've had a good look at the forums and have complained about this issue before. The difference is that I can't stop using this program because it's for work. It ***** up all the available HD space with the vm swap files, as much as 60-80GB at a time. The last time I had to reboot before the analysis was complete- which was unfortunate becase it had been running all day and now I have to restart it but not soon because it seems the last memory issue and scramble to delete stuff and make more room has resulted in a corrupted hard drive. Not sure how this happenened but also not surprised.
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 27615695 instead of 16346753)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

    And the question is?

    Hi prkrgrp,
I'm sorry, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question. If you are having issues starting up from your original Install Disk and running Disk Utility to repair your hard drive, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support

  • Help with 10.6.4 Archive & Install on Possibly Corrupted Hard Drive

Thanks in advance for your help. I spent a long time on the phone with tech support because my computer was slow and pinwheeling. The guy had me turn it off with the power button and now it won't reboot (even in single user, safe, or pram modes). So I am attempting to reboot from disk and try and archive and reinstall. I tried this method found here http://intlect.com/how-to-archive-and-install-os-x-snow-leopard/ but am not having success. I'm not even sure I know my user name to tell it what directory to move. Is there a way to find out my user name? Any other advice?

#1 should never be skipped: backup before beginning to install or update an operating system.
Back to Disk Utility, this time RESTORE tab.
Point the Target to an external drive volume large enough.
    Source is your internal drive.
Or take that new external hard drive and set aside 50GB for an OS install and leave the rest for a backup partition.
Even if Disk Utility First Aid "passes with flying colors" that is not 100% assurance all is okay and sound. Invest in backups, 3rd party disk and system maintenance like Drive Genius 3; TechTool Pro 5.07; or best I've found is Alsoft Disk Warrior.

  • Weird problem involving my external hard drive - help please!

I recently got a formac mini 120 gb firewire hard drive, which had been working fine with my g4 quicksliver.
i then went to a friends (g5 machine) with my drive and he put some data on it - bought it back to mine and managed to re connect the drive and take the data - no problem - very happy.
I recently gave my drive to another friend using a g5 and when it came back, nothing - i don't get the drive symbol appearing. turned the comp on and off many times and tried re-connecting etc still no drive appearing.
Then i took the drive to my friend with a mac lap top power book. connected there - working fine. Baffling. was happy that my data can still be accessed.
I know it's not the firewire cable because i can get power to the drive - i can see the red light at the fron on.
Can anyone help with this weird problem?
    Thanks

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours might be the 10.4.10 Combo update. I have no idea since you did not fill out your specs. fully when you signed in to this site. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system. This link is for PPC Macs not Intel Macs.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Mountain Lion download corrupts hard drive!!

I am trying to re-download Mountain Lion to create a boot jump drive so I can reinstall Mountain Lion clean.  After download I can not open "mount" the installEDS.dmg file.  Error pops up stating invalid checksums and I can not complete the process of creating the boot jump drive.  I check Disk Utility/Verify Disk and see these results: Disk Utility/Verify Disk reports, Incorrect block count for file installEDS.dmg, Volume Bitmap needs minor repair, The volume is now corrupt and needs repair.
So.. I restart the computer through recovery hard drive option so that I can repair the disk.  I am able to successfully repair the disk. The computer is still working.
I repeat the Mountain Lion down load process, attempt to create the boot jump drive and again.... installEDS.dmg will not mount, invalid checksums.  I check Disk Utility/Verify Disk.   The volume is now corrupt and needs repair.  I repeated this 4 times (I have a slow connection DSL 6mb).  Same results! I repeated once on a different day (App Store server problems maybe?).  Same results!
The reason I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion is because I have constant kernel panics.  Kernel panics are (4 to 5) in an hour. When this happens I attempt to restart the computer.  After second computer restart (kernel panic upon first restart attempt), the computer will last a day without a kernel panic!  I have attempted to address the kernel panics, (removing 3rd party programs, latest updates, etc.) I can not pin down the problem. I have experienced kernel panics after sleep, kernel panics when shutting down or restart, kernel panics after turning off blue tooth, basically kernel panics under every application so far.  I have ran the hardware test, (from snow leopard CD), no hardware errors.  Ran memtest from single user mode, no memory errors.  I do realize that these programs may not catch bad hardware.. and will be contacting OWC for memory and drive support as another avenue. Computer specifications are:
MacBook Pro 7.1, Mid2010, 2.4 Ghz, Snow Lepoard 10.6.8, OWC 8g Memory purchased Jan 2012 (Offically 4 supported), OWC 240g SSD purchased May 2012  Everything worked flawless until mountain lion upgrade!
So I would like to reinstall Mountain Lion clean, but can not, because I can not down load a clean copy of Mountain Lion.  My only thought is to install Snow Leopard on another drive and re-download Mountain Lion on that.
Any thoughts on these questions:  Is the application corrupted?  Does my current install of Mountain Lion corrupt new downloads? Is it my hardware? (Will schedule a visit with Apple store as well, when I can get to Chicago)
In the mean time anyone else experiencing this?  If so any other suggestions?  Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Using Data Rescue II to recover lost files from corrupt hard drive!!!

OK I am terribly confused. I found out my MacBook Pro hard drive is corrupt and I can't even start up my computer. I was told to get Data Rescue II, another Mac, and an external hard drive.
I have all of the above but have no idea how to make it work!! How do I access the corrupt HD on the current iMac I am using with Data Rescue and then transfer the found files to the external HD??? Please I need help asap!!

First, if you have an external drive, then install OS X on the external drive. Boot from the external drive, install Data Rescue, then run Data Rescue and see if you are able to recover any files from the bad drive.
You boot from the external drive by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the external drive then click on the down arrow button.
If you do not have an external drive then you can try connecting the two computers with a FireWire cable and booting the computer with the bad drive into Target Disk Mode. Boot the good computer normally. Install Data Rescue and run it to see if you can recover anything from the bad drive. My guess is this method will not likely work, but one never knows without trying.
BTW, have you tried the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Needs new hard drive- help required.

    Hello all.
For reasons that don't really matter- my hard drive has become corrupt- I believe it is the recovery partition on the hard drive. The device won't restore to factory nor will it update. Sometimes I have to unplug it and plug it in just to get movies to play.
Basically- I need to rebuild a new hard drive with the Apple TV OS on it- and all 3 partitions, but I don't know:
    1. Where to get the OS.
    2. How to create that recovery partition successfully
I'm pretty sure if I could get a .dmg of the OS or whatever form it will come in that I can just load those files into the boot partition. The 3rd partition is just empty for storage, and trickiest of all (to me) is the apple recovery partition.
My Apple TV is a couple years old so it's out of warranty.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Where to get the OS.
You can get the Apple TV OS! Just use a network sniffer while the Apple TV download the update and you'll find the address of the Apple server to go to download the OS on your mac. It appears that Apple only provides the 2 most recent versions of the Apple TV OS (As of today 3.01 and 2.4). Alternatively, you can google to find the address of the Apple Server. This info has been on the net forever and I just make sure to download a copy of the Apple TV OS each time a new version is released.
    2. How to create that recovery partition successfully
I haven't yet use it to upgrade my Apple TV drive (waiting to be out of warranty) but the instructions available on the net to upgrade the drive should help on how to use the OS images instead of cloning a previous Apple TV drive.
I'd greatly appreciate if you could share your experience on how you got it done. This will also be very useful to go back to previous version of the OS higher than the version in the recovery partition.

  • Pavillion DV6-7014 corrupting hard drives?

I'm trying to fix a Pavillion DV6-7014 laptop for a friend, and I'm having some issues.
The laptop keeps corrupting files on the hard drive, even after replacing the drive with a new one.
Heat is at times an issue, with the laptop getting so hot that it is painful to touch. cleaning the air vents and adjusting the power/fan settings help some, but don't fully resolve the issue. It has gotten so hot that it's even warped/damaged some of the surfaces it sits on when overheating (is this laptop a safety issue?)
The laptop is only 1 year and 8 months old. I don't know if the heat is causing the hard drives to fail, or if the heat has damaged the motherboard/sata controller, or if there is a power issue, etc.
What are my options for repairing this computer? It seems like the whole board might need to be replaced. Is there really only a 1 year warranty on this $1200 computer?

Yes it is a safety issue...certainly no longer a "laptop". I would say at this point the next course of action is to open it up and reseat the cooling fan/heatsink with new thermal compound. Post back if you want specific instructions. Does the fan spin and seem to work?
