Corrupted icons in Finder and Mail

My icons for files and folders often get corrupted as shown here:
http://www.math.uni-hamburg.de/spag/dm/corrupted_icons.pdf
The problem is cured (temporarily) by a reboot, but not by relaunching the Finder. Strangely, the problem "spreads" like an infection: at first, only the icons in one folder viewed in the Finder are corrupted, then quickly more and more get corrupted. The bad icons even infiltrate some applications, like Mail - see the bottom two icons in the rightmost screen shot of the link. When a single file has a bad icon, I can "delete" that icon in the info window for that file, and it reverts to normal. This does not seem to work when the corrupted icon is that of a folder.
I have a suspicion that the problem tends to spread from "old" files (never folders) that pre-date OSX. But that's not much more than speculation, since many of my files are of that type. Also, the problem has spread to other macs that I "migrated" to from the one originally affected.
Any help at all - such as suggestions of how to cleanse my Mac so that this does not reoccur - would be greatly appreciated...
Sandy

The problem is still not understood, but it seems I've been able to get rid of it. Many years ago (quite possibly still under OS9) I had given some folders special icons to make them stand out visually. I then put those folders in the toolbar of the Finder window (even now under Leopard, where dragging folders to the toolbar no longer seems to be officially encouraged but still works). In search of "anything unusual" to do with icons I now removed those pictures from the folders in their info field (so now they look normal again, like any other folders), and haven't had any more corrupted icons since. This has now been stable for about a fortnight, while before this measure I had newly corrupted icons about twice a week at least.
Caveat: I didn't remove those custom-made icons from all my folders: I simply forgot two of them (which, however, were changed later I think). So even if restoring generic icons to some folders solved the problem, the problem will most certainly be difficult to reproduce.

Drag the icons from the Dock, go to the Applications folder and drag Safari and Mail (one at a time) to the Dock. Don't release the mouse button until the adjaxent icons move out of the way for the one you're adding.
That should compensate for the updates to Mail and Safari introduced with SL.

  • Weird Problem With Dates in Finder and Mail

I have a MBPr running 10.8.2 which is exhibiting a very strange behaviour related to dates.
Initially, the problem manifested in Mail where the date shown in the message list for each message was exactly the same, regardless of the date sent/received. Oddly, this problem only manifested in the "new" mail view. Switching to "Classic" view in Mail prefs works fine. This seemed odd enough, but only related to mail.
Then, I noticed the exact same date was the Creation, Modification, and Last Opened date for many files (including all of the .emlx files in the Mail folder) as shown in the preview column in the Finder's column view. Oddly, the exact same files show different Creation/Modification/Opened dates when viewed in a Get Info window or when listed in the Terminal with ls -l.
Clearly there is some kind of issue with a cache, or an index of some sort that is accessed by the Finder and/or Mail. I'm attaching a screenshot of the Get Info window and the Finder preview column for a file. Thanks for any info anyone can shed on this.

Embarrassingly, the "More Like This" box to the immediate right of my post shows a discussion titled "Incorrect dates in column view preview" that fixed the problem.
How this affects the "new" view in Mail and not the "Classic" view is beyond me, but I'm also beyond caring at this point.

  • Checherboarded icons on Finder and images

. During a surf on internet, the look of icons on Finder have changed, all images on Iphoto, and videos on Quicktime are now pollued, TV. All user on the computer are affected. Further restarts didn't change. System and disk inspection an system's restoration didn't give any improvements.
The icons into Finder windows aren't affected same think with Internet windows. But these windows are broadsided by the pattern.

I booted the Imac G5 without extensions like suggested by rrcharles (09/30). Result : The pollution disappear on Finder except on the mouse index.

  • Finder (and Mail) display corrupted while scrolling

    Hi all,
Recently Finder is behaving strangely. While I'm scrolling through large lists of folders the text and images are getting bulky and dark, this goes for the scrollbars aswel. Mail is also affected. Could the latest Java-update have something to do with it? Or my DVI-connector from the Cinema Display? Does anybody recognize this problem or better yet have a solution for it?
Examples are to be found here:

Sorry, no solution, but my computer has been doing this since day 1. Haven't been able to find any solution. I do use the Pantone Huey to calibrate my monitor. I only see this in finder windows.

  • Corrupted icons in finder/bad Photoshop files

My PowerBook G4 17-inch with 10.4.7 installed keeps crashing icons. When I launch Finder, the icons are frequently a jumbled mess (graphics on drugs) or blank.
I have run disk utlility and it finds nothing wrong with permissions (I ran the repair anyway). When I reboot they continue as a scrambled mess. The network icon frequently disappears after reboot. SMART status says "verified."
I read a thread about permissions and did the safe reboot procedure, and then powered down, rebooted and the problem goes away for a little while. I am assuming the permissions for file structure are repaired during the safe boot, but then get corrupted after hours of use.
I don't know if this is true for every instance of crazy icons, but they seem to go south whenever I put the computer "to sleep." I told the doctor "Doc, it hurts when I do this." He said "Don't do that."
Well, how does one not put his computer to sleep? That is like breathing air when you have a laptop.
But, I am not totally sure that is the only instance of icons crashing/permissions corrupting.
I have done several SuperDuper backups, but even that transfer process stops/hangs on certain Photoshop files (running CS2). When I go in and try to open those files, they are permanently gone. The file is in the directory, and the info even shows the preview, but there is no way to open the file. Some of these files I spent weeks creating.
The safe boot procedure does not bring back the Photoshop files, but does solve the icon problem temporarily in Finder.
    Ideas?

    I will reply to myself...
I deleted Safari, repaired permissions, reinstalled 10.4.7, rebooted, repaired permissions again, rebooted, and things appear calm for the moment. In further test, I forced laptop to sleep, and woke it up. Icons appear normal.
I tried all of the cookies.plist stuff. (Note: does anyone know how to get the cookies.plist icon out of my Finder sidebar now?)
I am using Firefox for the moment. May not reinstall Safari if system continues to remain stable.

  • Button icons from finder and safari gone

My iMac updated Safari on 8-13-14 and ever since then the icons from the navigation menu of both Safari and Finder have Disappeared. What do I do to Fix this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

When down loaded up dates, had many problems in lion 10.7.5

I enterd the canon marathon, dead line 9pm.. I had so much stress as their up loader would not start. i had to send e mail.
E mails :  I have to clck view and tick view by date every time now, Its unstable , never stays the same.
Cannot enlarge enough to read the mail Got new galses but the enlarge only 3 steps. Same for the desk top. Un user friendly for shot sighted people.
please help resolve this , Cost my an over draft to get this mad book pro.

GMail works just fine in Mail 6 here. In what way is it not working there? As to your Canon scanner, that is a Canon issue. If Canon has opted not to update their software, you can remove it and try scanning directly from Image Capture instead.
Regarding downgrading, unless you have a backup made right before installing ML, it's not an easy task. You would have to erase the hard drive, reinstall the previous system, reinstall all your apps and then import data from somewhere. And some data formats have changed - Mail, for example, has had slight changes to its mailboxes in both the last two major system upgrades. The only way to import messages that aren't still stored on the server into an older version of Mail is one at a time.

  • Proxy Icons in Finder and Apps no longer draggable?

I was playing around with ML today and noticed that I could no longer drag a proxy icon from the top of the window (the little icon in the middle of a window's title bar). When you click and hold the icon still darkens. But when you attempt to drag the icon goes back to normal as soon as your cursor leaves its boundaries.

It turns out all drag operations in Finder went kaput on me. A restart fixed the problem.

  • Search in Finder and Mail for files in 2011 not working

I do get search results just not for anything created after December 31st 2010. Nothing exists in the search for 2011. I have updated all software and nothing seems to work. My date and time are correct. I can have a file on the desktop or in my inbox and the system can not find it. I do search every day and it is getting labor intensive to do it all by hand. Any ideas?

I figured out a fix for my machine. I went into the system preferences, to the spotlight. Went to the privacy settings added my drive and closed to save the settings then reopened it and I removed it from Privacy. This caused it to re-indexed all my files (it took over an hour) but I even created new files and was able to find them in spotlight and in my email.

  • Corrupt file type icons in finder

    Hi there,
I discovered a problem with small icons in Finder and it's driving me insane that I can't figure out how it happened and how to remedy it. Hope anyone here can help!
    The symptoms:
The problem concerns .mkv and .srt files. In the list or column view in Finder, these file types have exec icons instead of the regular VLC icons. However, when I change to icon or cover flow view, the correct VLC icons are shown. Also in quick look the correct icons are shown. So, the problem only seems to concern small icons, but not large ones.
I tried to change the icon via Command+I. The preview icons are correct, only in the tool bar the incorrect small exec is shown. However, when I drag-drop the small exec icon from the bar to the large item, also small exec icon in Finder changes to the correct VLC icons. But only for this particular file and for all files of that type. Also when I download a new .srt or .mkv file the small icons are again exec images. SOO weird!
What scares me a little is that I did a another clean install of Yosemite after I discovered this. And nothing changed! What is happening here? I hope someone can help!
    Potential cause:
The problem wasn't there after I updated to Yosemite. I did a clean install and everything was fine. However, at one point I ran the OS X version of Gmaptool  (a .img merge app for Garmin navigation maps). The app is only a command line and the file also has an exec icon. After I ran this command line, the problem occurred. Does anyone know how this could have happened?
Thanks for your help! It's driving me insane!

Perhaps it's a good idea to upload a few screenshots
As you can see in the first three pictures, only small icons show the exec icon. Large ones are the correct VLC icons. The last two show the Info windows. In the first one, you can see the small exec icon in the tool bar. It changed after I dropped this exec icon on the icon field (see second Info picture). However, this only changed the small icon for this particular file, not for all .srt files.
Is there some weird preference causing this? I also found a few system files now have exec icon (see picture below). I think that wasn't the case before. How can I change it? Can I reset the small icons somehow? Would it help to securely erase the hard drive? I have nothing on the drive anyways, so that would be an easy option for me.
    Thanks!

  • Lion and Mail menu bars

Does anyone else think the Mac team got in a hurry on Lion?  Why are they using the old trash can and info button in the menu bars. In fact, all the icons in the finder and mail menu bars look old fashioned. I'll bet Steve didn't see them!

No. Snow Leopard's Mail isn't compatible w/Lion's, so it needs to do the conversion to be usable. Maybe you should consider trimming the number of e-mails you've storred.

  • Screen Saver and Dock and Mail all not working properly

I'm helping my husband troubleshoot some issues he is having. His machine is a new (couple of months) Mac Pro Quad Intel with 10.6.2.
He has never been able to get the ScreenSaver to 'see' iPhotos. iPhotos completely quit launching today and I did everything I read on the boards, finally settling on deleting and reinstalling from the Snow Leopard disk. It works fine, but Screensaver still does not see it. I have deleted, the com.apple.screensaver caches and anything in preferences that had to do with screensaver including the plist. I restarted the machine and it made no difference, other than the hot corners finally started working.
It won't keep certain applications in the dock. Like Word. They disappear every time the machine is restarted. As above.. I have deleted the com.apple.doc.db and com.apple.dock.plist to no avail.
This just started today as well... When the mail has when the program has been Quit, with every 30 minutes set in the mail preferences, it will launch, every 30 minutes. The dock icon will bounce and Mail will ask for the password so it can check for new mail. But the program was not open for it to be checking for mail. Oddly, something like this is also happening on his old G5 sitting in the other room. The only thing common to them is they are on the same network and pulling email from the same ISP account. Though the G5 is no longer scheduled to actively get new mail at any time, it is for some reason self-launching. I have no idea why my mail was open on that machine when I saw it this afternoon, but there it was.
It is a lot of issues. He has been having issues since he got the machine and gets one resolved and then discovers another one. But the Dock and ScreenSaver he has never been able to resolve, Mail is a new issue. He has re-installed Snow Leopard 10.6.2 twice thinking something had become corrupted, I am using the same OS X on my machine and having no issues, I can see no difference in the settings. If I can't get some ideas from y'all here then I guess I am going to have to go to tech support because it seems to be one weird thing after another.

Even in big sky country, people must know where the Desktop resides. It's what's on the screen when all windows are closed. Thus, move the om.apple.screensaver.XXXXX.plist file in the ByHost subfolder out of there and put it on the Desktop. The next statement: +*System Preferences->Desktop & Screen Saver->and iPhoto should be available.*+ means open System Preferences, select the Desktop & Screen Saver prefPane (preference pane) and in the listing should appear iPhoto. It does on my machine. If not, then restart and see if the iPhoto folder appears in that prefPane.
