Corrupted Iphoto 4.0.3 files

Hi,
I'm running Iphoto 4.0.3 and when I launch it the library builds properly. It's just when i click on certain pics, they just show up as blank. When I try to export them as jpg's (exported to the desktop) Preview cannot open them and says they are corrupt.
In the Organize mode, the pics appear normal, when I go to the Edit mode, they are not there.
I've rebuilt the library and trashed the Iphoto plist. Not sure what else i can try. When I do try to rebuild, it shows an error in finding those files.
I've been reading the other topics relating to this as well.
Thank you.

osterau:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The reason you can't import those files is because they are inside the iPhoto Library folder. iPhoto won't import any file located anywhere inside that folder.
First launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. If that' doesn't work post back and I'll layout a workflow to create a new library and import just the full sized image files. If you try to import the entire iPhoto Library folder you'll also get the thumbnail files as regular files and you don't want that.
Also make it a habit of creating a backup of the Library.iPhoto file frequently. If you had a recent version of it you might be able to resurrect the library. That's the file that gets corrupted for a number of reasons.
Do you Twango?

  • TS1192 After all the steps I still have a corrupt iphoto 11 Albumdata.xml file. What next?

I have tried all the steps here, except deleting the com.apple.iApps.plist because I don't have one! I deleted it ages ago trying to do this before and it seems it never created a new one. So, none of this steps work. I want to import my iphoto to Picasa.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 13 inch, 500 gig HDD 2011 version, with Mountain Lion and the latest iPhoto 11. iPhoto has been acting iffy for ages even after repairing permissions, rebuilding the library and every step I can find. So I want to switch to Picasa. Am I going to have to manually import and sort pics to Picasa?

Sorry, I read the article on how to fix the problem if other apps cannot see the iPhoto library, because none of the steps there helped me, and it posted my question here.
My problem is that when I open Picasa and select to import my iphoto library it says that I have a corrupted AlbumData.xml file. It still does this even after all of Apples steps to fix it. I have:
    1. Checked and repaired permissions
    2. Rebuilt my iphoto library
    3. Deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist (but it has not returned)
    4. Made a new AlbumData.xml file
    5. Removed all special characters from album names in iPhoto
    Nothing has worked.
All iLife applications can see my iphoto library fine. Another application, Lyn, can now see my iphoto library, but Picasa still keeps insisting it is corrupted. I believe it is true because iphoto is incredibly slow, freezes every few seconds and crashes if left open for longer than a few minutes (which is why I am switching to Picasa in the first place). It uses up over 60% of my CPU just to stay open and slows my computer down to a crawl, a sticky, lagging infuriating to use crawl.
I would prefer to keep using iPhoto as its convenient for my iphone and ipad which I use daily, but its too much to cope with now.

I ran MacKeeper and demo'd my wife's iPhoto archive bigtime: RAW files appear corrupted and lotsa pix w/no thumbnails or "!" marks instead. Help!

Should I take it that recco'd means 'recommended'? Still have no idea what demo'd means in the context you use. I've often seem it as an abbreviation for 'demonstrate' but that makes no sense. The problem with idiosyncratic abbreviations is that other people don't understand them.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto issues editing Raw files in PE4

I've just acquired Photoshop Elements 4 and was happy at the prospect or keeping my photos in iPhoto and editing them in Elements.
I mostly shoot in RAW format but when editing a RAW file in Elements I can't get the edit to show up in iPhoto (version 6).
On the other hand when processing jpegs from iPhoto to Elements the edits show up fine back in iPhoto.
Is the problem with the format change when converting RAW to Jpeg I wonder?
I did notice that when saving the edited RAW file -and choosing Jpeg as the new format- iPhoto defaulted to the "Original" not the "Modified" folder for the save. Couldn't iPhoto determine that the file has been modified? Is that because the extension was changed?
I also tried saving and manually selecting the MODIFIED folder but with unhappy results. The edit did show up, and in it's proper place, but when viewing in "full screen" mode the image resorted back to the unedited version after 3 or 4 seconds. I tried that a couple of times with the same results...!? I hope I didn't corrupt anything in the process!
I realise I could just do a "save as" to my desktop and import back to iPhoto but that creates a double and also a new roll for each import...
I haven't seen any posts about this. Has anyone had the same problem, or am I missing something elementary?
    Thanks for any feedback.

iPhoto is a consumer-level application, and RAW is a format mostly for professionals. When you import a RAW file into iPhoto it saves the RAW in the Originals folder and instantly creates a jpeg version of it in the Modified folder. This causes the problem with your editing workflow.
Yes, changing the file extension in Elements is the same as doing a Save As - it breaks the link iPhoto has with the original. This is why you don't see your edits back in iPhoto. Any time you change the extension you will need to save as to the desktop and import the edit as a new original into iPhoto. As you've seen, you cannot save directly into the iPhoto library folder because images must be Imported for iPhoto to recognize them. If you know which files you placed in there, go ahead and drag them out (using Finder) to your desktop. Then import. (Be careful not to tamper with anything else in the library folder while you're in there.)
My suggestion for your RAW workflow is to use Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload from your camera (to a folder anywhere outside of your iPhoto library folder). Edit in Elements. Last, import into iPhoto. Once inside iPhoto, the desktop copies can be deleted. You can set Image Capture to open when you connect a camera in Image Capture Preferences.
iPhoto does create a new roll each time you import photos, but you can always reorganize your rolls. Choose Library and View > Sort Photos > by Film Rolls and you can combine, create, retitle, and redate your rolls. For example, you could keep separate rolls for files with a RAW original versus files imported as jpegs.

  • IPhoto Book Colour Profiles & File Sizes?

I want to make a book in iPhoto. All my images are Adobe RGB. Do I need to change the colour profile.
I have a Mac with and Apple flat screen that has been colour balanced. So all the images look good. I am just concerned that they will be printed in a different profile and look rubbish.
What is the smallest file size and resolution that will look good.
    Any other helpful advice.

Here's what Apple responded with when I asked them about book material and print quality:
"Thank you for contacting the Apple Print Products Customer Service.
I understand that you would like to know the printing process that is used and the color mode the files should be in, so you can better advise users in the iPhoto forum.
iPhoto version 4 or later, allows you to import and print files through the Apple Print Product service as RGB, grayscale, or CMYK color space. JPEG files with *RGB color space are recommended for best results.*
While iPhoto 2 can import files of various formats, including RGB color, grayscale, and CMYK, this version requires JPEG files with RGB color space when printing photos and books.

Here are some of the technical specifications for the books, cards, and calendars. I hope this gives you an idea about their quality and form.
    BOOKS
All iPhoto books are printed using acid-free paper for long-lasting image quality. The photos are printed at a high resolution (300DPI if you use iPhoto 6). There is no external modification--such as sharpening or contrast adjustment--of the photos; what you see in the application is what is printed in the book.
    Hardcovers Books
The cover is hard-bound and covered in linen. You select the linen color during the book-ordering process. The hardcover books have a solid, stiff binding that is glued and crimped. The internal pages, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches, are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock.
    Softcover Books
The softcover books come in three sizes:
    - Large 8.5 x 11 inches
    - Medium 6 x 8 inches
    - Small 2.6 x 3.5 inches
All of the softcover books have internal pages that are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock. The large softcover book has a white cover (Kromekoteplus Folding Cover, 16 point) with a cutout on the front that reveals the cover-page photo in the book. The covers for the medium and small softcover books have the cover image and title printed directly on the cover. All of the softcover books have a glued binding and feature a thick cover of McCoy 100# Cover Gloss paper stock.
    CARDS
All cards are printed on McCoy 120# Silk Cover paper stock. The postcards measure 4 x 6 inches, and the greeting cards measure 5 x 7inches.
    CALENDARS
All calendars measure 8 x 10 inches and are printed on McCoy 100# Silk Cover paper stock.
To ensure the best print quality, we have chosen to use Kodak NexPress technology. The press uses a dry toner, which is fused to the surface of the paper. Please see NexPress' site for more information:

I hope you find this information helpful in answering questions on the iPhoto forum."
As for file size, keep the pixel dimension of the photo the largest you can. That will convert to the highest resolution possible when converted to the pdf for uploading and printing. iPhoto will assign a warning flag to those photos that end up with a dpi of less than 180 when added to a particular frame in the book. When added to a smaller frame the warning flag may go away. I've printed books with that warning and was happy with the results.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Help removing a corrupt Iphoto library

    Hi All
I am posting this here as i don't think its a iPhoto specific issue, rather a corrupt file issue
I was hoping some one can provide wisdom in removing a corrupt iPhoto Library
The file suggests it is 500Gig in size, and no matter what i try i can't delete it
    What i have tried
Deleting it through the trash can - system just hangs
Deleting using OmniDiskSweeper, using this app it suggests the file size is 11Gig, but when you ask it to trash it again just hangs
Running disk verify and repair to see if that would resolve the problem
Repair the file by holding down Command and Option while opening in iPhoto - it brought up an error message and would not let me proceed
I have even tried deleting using Terminal with no success, however in saying that i am a beginner using this launguage
At the moment my Mac thinks its occupying 50% of my hard drive space, i know it not that size, but i am at my wits end
I would be grateful if any one could help me solve this problem
Note i am running the latest software, and i no longer require this file

  • Managing non-image files in iPhoto e.g. wav file

    Hi.
In the past I had a camera that wouldn't record video, but would record audio and saved them as .wav's. Previously I have managed and organized my photos independently using Explorer (during the dark days of Windows) and now through Finder, and this way I was able to keep these audio files in the same place as the pictures they were associated with. Having now tried to import these folders of images and .wav files I see that iPhoto will not accept files in .wav format, and the thought of having to keep them somewhere completely seperate from the images they're a part of really irks me.
Does anyone know of a way around this, or have a suggestion for somehow being able to manage the situation? I see video files are no problem for iPhoto to manage, which can even call Quicktime to play the videos if desired... surely there must be a way to deal with .wav's?
And since we're on the topic - what about other file formats? Most of my pictures (and audio) are from my travels, so ideally I'd like to be able to manage folders that can hold all of my photos, videos, soundfiles and text files (journals) in one place... Don't suppose this is a realistic dream yet is it?
    Thanks everyone

    No.
Placing any file inside your library folder will appear to not do anything. You won't see a placeholder or anything there. For that to happen, files must be imported. If the file type is not supported, iPhoto will refuse to import. In addition, those extra files inside your library could confuse the database. You might start getting a message upon launch that iPhoto needs to rebuild the thumbnails. But it could get worse. You could cause your database to become corrupted. In that case you would lose all of your metadata: titles, keywords, comments, ratings; lose the relationship between your originals and their edited versions; plus lose your albums, books, calendars, etc.
So no, it's not safe. Manage them yourself outside of the iPhoto Library folder. You could keep them in your Pictures or Music folder in a subfolder labeled Voice Recordings, or look into the software that TD recommended.
    Regards.

  • Corrupt iPhoto library - what next?

    I've spent the last few days trying to fix my corrupt iPhoto library.  Pictures I've imported in the last month are no longer visible within iPhoto (I get the exclamation point and the triangle).  The imported pictures are stored in the iPhoto library, where they should be, i.e. using the year/month/day file system, so I haven't lost them, but iPhoto can't see them.  I've done the following;
Used the rebuild function when launching iPhoto
Repaired permissions, both when launching iPhoto and using Disk Utility
Ran iPhoto Library Manager to create a new library
Downloaded Aperture - but it was too much of a resource hog to be used effectively
    Backups using Time Machine
I know I'm not supposed to alter the iPhoto library file in any way, but I'm not sure how to get the program to recognize those photos without reimporting them and then having two copies taking up space.  iPhoto Library Manager didn't do anything other than shrink my picture size by about 500, but I'm not sure how confident I am that other photos weren't "missed" by that program, since it missed the last 400 pictures that were in the iPhoto library file.  Any suggestions on next steps would be appreciated.

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new iPhoto 11 library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc. This really is starting over from scratch.
Move the damaged iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the desktop
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Go into the damaged iPhoto Library on the desktop (Right Click -> Show Package Contents)and find the Masters folder. From the Masters folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the damaged iPhoto Library on your desktop.
While you do this, your penance is to remember that with a back up none of this would have been necessary.
    Regards

  • How to Replace corrupted iphotos

    Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000195 EndHTML:0000003368 StartFragment:0000002387 EndFragment:0000003332 SourceURL:file://localhost/Users/stephanbianchi_1/Documents/Corrupted%20iphotog raphs.doc
    Corrupted iphotos
About 400 of the photos in my iphoto files seem to be corrupted or missing. The thumbnails show, but when I click on them, a blurry exclamation point appears. I believe I have copies of these photos on CDs, but if I reload them, I’m afraid all the modifications and relationships may be lost, that the copies won’t be edited, won’t show up in the same folders, etc.
I also have time machine backups and an older external hard drive, but I don’t know how I might retrieve older versions of these photos without replacing newer versions of my photos that are not corrupt.
    Any suggestions?

The exclamation point is indicating that iPhoto has broken the link/file path between the thumbnail version and the full version.  Do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Corrupted iPhoto database (thanks a lot mobileme!)

Following a stalled mobileme upload where iphoto locked up and couldn't even be force quited, I have a corrupted iPhoto )* database and can't see the last two years of photo's.
There files are thankfully still all there in the appropriate "originals", "modified" and "data" files but iphoto can't SEE them to open them.
I tried rebuilding the library but still no go. Dragging the files into my back up iphoto library (which covers up until last month) preserves all the metadata, which is a relief.
HOWEVER, I have just returned to the UK with about 2000 shots from a US trip, and I will potentially lose the hours I have spent editing these shots. I could merge the original and modified files before re-importing but that is going to be very laborious....
So my question is, is there an easy way to repair the library database without having to re-import??
    Any help/suggestions greatly received!
p.s. mobileme iPhoto syncing has DESTROYED the previous stability and usability of the web gallery feature..... This is the buggiest bit of software tech I have seen as a 20 year plus mac user!

I have a few hundred duplicates in my iPhoto library, but the file sizes are different.  So one is 1.3mb and one is 567kb.  I want to delete the smaller ones, but short of comparing each duplicate, is there a way to do this?  I've been looking at Duplicate Annhilator but I don't think it can do it.
    Thanks!

I just ran a test with iPhoto Library Manager, Duplicate Annihilator, iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner, Duplifinder and Photodedupo.  I imported a folder of 5 photos into a test library 3 times, allowing iPhoto to import duplicates.  I then ran the 5 photos thru resizer to reduce their jpeg compression but all other aspects of the file the same.
None of the duplicate removal apps found set that was reduced in the file resizer. That's probably due to the fact that the file creation date was being used as a criteria and the resized photo would have a different file creation date even though the Image Capture date was the same.
They all found the 3 regular duplicates and some of them would mark two and leave the 3rd unmarked.  iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner can sort the found duplicates by file size but if the file was edited to get the reduced file size it might not be found as it would have a different file creation/modification date.
iPhoto Library Manage was able to find all duplicates and mark them as such if the file names were the same the the filename option was selected.  Otherwise it also missed the modified, resized version.  It allowed one to select the one photo to save before going to work on the library.
So if a photo has been reduced in image quality or pixel size it will not be considered a duplicate.

  • How can I get iPhoto to display ONLY file numbers of pictures and not document titles when displayed as thumbnails?

I am a pro photographer and I've never used iPhoto. I use a combination of Adobe's Bridge, Lightroom & Photoshop programmes.  I've sent a disk of images to a client and they cannot see the file numbers of the images.  Their version of iPhoto only displays the document title that I have embedded in the metadata when importing the images into Bridge.
When I ran a test and imported the same images into my version of iPhoto(7.1.5, since you ask) some of the thumbnails displayed the file number while others displayed the document title.  Why does this happen?  Can I make it stop?  How do I make iPhoto display just the file number in thumbnail mode and not the document title?
When I view the images in Bridge, all I see is the file number but I can't convince the client to use the programme even though they have it.  Any help/guidance will be very gratefuly received.
    Many thanks,
