Corrupted iPod: Restore fails!!!

Something went wrong with my iPod with colour display (the Photo Generation, or whatever they call it).
While I was listening to it, suddenly it started skipping songs till it finally stopped.
As soon as I arrived at the office I connected it to my PC and then the agony started.
I will describe everything in the most possible detailed way in the hope anyone could help (bear with me, please!).
When I connect the iPod to the PC it is shown on "My Computer" as an external driver as "Apple iPod", as usual, and on iTunes I can read its S/N, software version but it doesn't show any capacity and no format either.
I have started iTunes that prompted the follwoing message:
"iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
Disconnecting and reconnecting did not do anything.
So I have tried to restore it to factory settings (thank goodness my library is on my PC...).
The usual message:
"Are you sure you want to restore the iPod "iPod" to its factory settings? All of your songs and other data will be erased." is displayed.
I finally proceed and the "Restoring iPod" message is shown. To my dismay I see that the iPod is disconnected and the next thing is yet another message:
"The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1418)".
Then the iPod freezes....
I have tried anything at least a gazillion times with no success.
PLEASE HELP ME!
Thanks,
Emanuele (The Cappuccino Kid)
HP Compaq nc8000   Windows XP   iTunes 7.0.2.16

I just went thru this myself!
It took me about 6 tries before it finally restored...... Can't suggest anything futher about trying to restore but...here's what I think the culprit was... in my case and I post this as WARNING for other Ipod users!
Heads up....faulty cases for Ipods?
My wife purchased a case for my Ipod... It is a very nice leather case with a flip front...
I noted when I put the Ipod in that the flip front seemd to have a magnet in it to keep the front closed...
I wondered about the wisdom of having a magnet so close to a hard drive - but figured the manufactuer knew what they were doing...
I know question that - within 24 hours of using that case - my Ipod stopped functioning and required 5 or 6 attempts to restore to factory setting in Itunes before it would work again...
I wish I'd saved the packaging to know what company it was... but it might be worth noting that this could be a problem for Ipods... and less knowledgeable clients may be using this case - restoring their Ipod and then using the case again... They may be blaming the Ipod when the problem could be stemming from the case itself...

  • Corrupt iPod Restore taking forever !!

iTunes told me that my iPod Classic was Corrupt so i run a restore and it started syncing everything again and seemed to be moving quite fast now however 12 hours later it seems to take a couple minutes on just one song !! what can i do ? it's not even half finished this could take days !!

Quit, forcibly if needed. See Corrupt iPod classic. If the stats are OK try the DFU restore method and then the break up large transfers method to reload the media. I suggest you reboot the computer before attempting to load up the device.

  • Corrupted iPod, Restored several times with no change.

Everytime I attach my iPod to iTunes(I sometimes have difficulty getting it to recognize), it says that "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod." I have restored literally about 30 times, with no change in this. This wasn't a problem until I downloaded the new iTunes. I've tried reinstalling the new iTunes, with no luck. I've been looking for my iTunes CD that came with the iPod, and I am hoping that may be the fix to the problem. If anyone else has had this problem and has found a way to fix it, please inform me. =)

I'm right here with ya. I've got the same exact problem to the letter of what you said. Lemme know if you get an answer.

  • IPod Restore failed, now Kernel Panic when connect to Mac

My iPod is a little older and has had trouble updating though the iPod Updaters so in order to get the latest updater on my iPod I've had to just restor the iPod using that specific updater. iPod Updater froze during my last restore and now I have incomplete software on my iPod and connecting it to my Mac results in immediate kernel panic. How can I get my iPod back to a usable state?
    Thanks.

Just got back from trying this idea and IT WORKS. For people that might have this problem, I booted from the CD/DVD and lauched Disk Utility and did a Repair Disk. I did it twice actually for good measure. Afterwards I booted back to the System Folder on the HD and I performed a restore of my iPod using the iPod Updater 2005-06-26.app updater. I've read that my whatever generation iPod works best with that one (I have the click wheel with the 4 buttons above it).
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Ipod restore failing

ok so i recently got a new ipod touch 4th gen after the screen on my old one broke and i payed $100 to get a new one from a real apple store. After a few days the ipod started restarting itself (the screen went black with the apple logo) and it would work for a few minutes then restart itself again. I have tried draining the battery and restoring it but the problem persisted so i finally put it in recovery mode and then restored it and it still wouldnt work. Also sometimes during the restore it would freeze completely and even after leaving it for hours nothing changed so i would have to shut it down and try again. Does any one have any suggestions? Is it time to take it into apple or is there another solution? and if i do give it to apple how long will the repair take?

  • Corrupted ipod... can't restore?

okay, so ill try to provide as many details as i can.
i've got a 30 gig ipod video. i've had it since christmas 2005.
yesterday, it suddenly froze, so i restarted it, and the unhappy ipod symbol came up. it was also making a weird clicking noise. i was in florida at the time, but i came home, and it kept doing the same thing. then i charged it, and it would switch on and off between saying "wait a moment, critical low battery" and the unhappy pod symbol.
now, when i connect it to my computer, the ipod screen says to restore it, and "corrupted ipod found" comes up in itunes, but as soon as i click okay, the page with the ipod options (restore & etc) dissapears, before i can click restore. ipod updater says "invalid ipod service version" so i can't do it that way... please help?

You may need to fix your iPod with another computer .... but have a read the following first
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • IPod is corrupt please restore.

    Hi,
I set up my 3rd gen iPod originaly on my PC but switched the library over to my Mac several months ago. I have since been syncing it with my Mac with no problems. Last week iTunes 7.0 downloaded an iPOd software update to my iPod during a sync.
Since then my iPod won't connect to anything. Every time I plug it in the computer thinks for a bit and I get a "Your iPod may be corrupt, please restore...". I had to wonder if it tried to install Mac software on an iPod set up for PC? Who knows.
I have gone through the restore process 40 times. Done the 5 Rs. Put it in disk mode. I have plugged it in to two PCs and two Macs. Still get the same error.
The menus work fine. The iPod appears just as if it came right out of the box. However, it is impossible to connect it to any computer I have and get it to sync.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this? Is there anything else I can do to try and make it sync with a computer?
Or has it become a fancy paper weight?

Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one of more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including a different USB port directly on the computer.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
Try a different USB 30-pin dock connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts by following iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your Registry. If your default packet size is set incorrectly it can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If you find an ASR error 1000 in the iPhone or iPod updater log file, that is an error decompressing and transferring the IPSW file that is downloaded during the restore. This error is frequently caused by third-party security software interference, a poor quality Internet connection resulting in a bad IPSW download, or a conflict on the USB bus

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Corrupted iPod Nano - restore's aren't working

iTunes 7.0.2 on Windows XP Pro SP1 (long story).
    G1 iPod Nano (4GB) Firmware release 1.3
I upgraded to iTunes 7.0.2 and firmware release 1.3 when they came out (a couple weeks ago). I use the device, syncing between iTunes and the iPod daily, and have had no problems with either.
Today I'm getting the message from iTunes: "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
    Disconnecting & reconnecting doesn't work.
Quitting and restarting iTunes doesn't work.
    Restarting the computer doesn't work.
Hard reset on the iPod doesn't work.
Restoring the iPod using iTunes 7.0.2, runs, then I get the "Your iPod has ben restored to factory settings..." message, followed by the iPod rebooting, followed by the same message being displayed:
"iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need..."
A couple cycles of this does nothing.
The iPod passes the internal diagnostics test.
    "Settings >> About" on the iPod gives "Songs 0 / Photos 0 / Capacity 3.7 GB / Available 3.7 GB / Version 1.3 / S/N .... / Model MA107LL / Format Windows" which looks all correct to me.
Forcing it into disk mode, I can browse through the empty directory structure, and can copy files onto and off of the device. iTunes still complains that the iPod is corrupted.
I've read through 30 or 40 forum postings about corrupted iPods, and haven't been able to find one that matches my scenario.
    Any suggestions?

Well yo have to do what wmlye says...
But if you need precise instructions, hey there are:
    1) Connect your iPod nano in your PC
    2) Close iTunes. DO NOT EJECT in iTunes or Windows
    the iPod.
    3) your iPod most be now saying in the screen "Do not
    discconect"
    4) Reboot yor iPod nano for doing this just press the
menu button and center button at the same time and
wait until the Black Apple logo screen appears.
    5) In the same Black Apple logo screen after reboot,
before the iPod its in the main menu, press the
play/pause button and center button at the same time
until the screen Says "Do not disconnect" and the top
    title says "Disk Mode".
    6) Now go to Windows Start Button and click on
Execute and type there "diskmgmt.msc" (without the
    quotes)
    7) Find and Select your iPod in the list, now you
will see two partitions that are in your iPod find
and select the partition what says FAT32 (Always is
the most bigger of the two ;))
    8) Then press the right click on the partition that
we find on the step 7, and select format, put a label
of your choice, then select FAT32 as the file system
type, leave the assignement size as default, uncheck
the quick format value and press OK.
    9) There is possibility that windows says a warming
of that the iPod its still being used and more
technichal stuff, just says OK and your iPod now its
    completly formated.
    10) Open your iTunes and restore your iPod and wait
    until the restore is complete
    11) Now your iPod most be completly fixed
I hope this info will help you
