Corrupted iTunes cannot be trashed

I have a corrupted version of iTunes on my new Mac. I will uninstall it, then download a new iTunes. After I dragged the corrupted file to the trash and tried to empty the trash, I get a message: "The operation cannot be completed because the item 'iTunesHelper is in use.' " What can I do to get rid of the corrupted file? Thanks, Jeff

MJ- Thanks. This worked. Did not have to log out and log back in.
After I went to System Prefs > Accounts > Login Items > and unchecked "iTunes Helper" I was able to empty the trash.
However, iTunesHelper is still listed there, and when I search "itunes" in Spotlight, it still finds a number of items. Do I need to track down each of those items and trash them before reinstalling? Thank you. -Jeff

  • ITunes library file NOT corrupt but cannot locate music files

This is a new one... the library file seems to be NOT corrupt. iTunes loads fine and is populated by all the music information and artwork, etc. but when I click to play a tune, it says "cannot locate music". Nothing was moved, nothing has been changed. All my files are in the same location and iTunes shows the correct file path. The only files it can play are four songs that were imported before a massive rebuild of the library occurred the next day!
    Any ideas!!
    Thanks!

This is probably a big clue, but I don't understand what you mean by it!

  • I deleted iTunes when it said "iTunes could not back up iPhone because the backup could not be saved on the computer"and now it wont let me install it again and keeps saying "itunes cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in the cabinet "

iTunes told me to delete my backup folder when I was having problems syncing my phone to my computer. After that it wouldn't work at all. After trying and trying I deleted iTunes when it said "iTunes could not back up iPhone because the backup could not be saved on the computer"and now it wont let me install it again and keeps saying "itunes cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in the cabinet ". What the **** itunes? Nothing is working!!
I wanted to update my iTunes so I could sync my phone to my computer and update my phones software so I can use the latest apps that need a 4.2 or higher.
This is not fun for me so if anyone knows what I can do to fix this please help. Is it possible to download the "cabinent file" with the lastest iTunes?
    Thank you.
    -Kait
My phone is the iPhone4 and my computer is a Windows Vista

I doubt that corrupt files are the problem. It is more likely a space or permissions issue. Is the hard-drive on which iTunes is stored close to capacity? Do you (or the particular user profile you have logged on with) have the requisite permissions to save to that drive?
Otherwise, do you get an error code? This might point us in the right direction.

  • "Itunes cannot read the contents of ipod. Go to the summary tab in Ipod preferences and click Restore to restore this ipod to factory settings." What is this?

I have been getting this error message since about the end of June when I updated to the latest version of iTunes. It's pretty annoying. Let me lay out how this has been happening for the past month, the best I can. I have a 32GB 4th gen iPod Touch
I load content up to my iPod. Music, Apps, Videos, pictures, etc.
My iPod works well for a little while, days sometimes a week is the longest I went without seeing this message.
I connect iPod back to my laptop through the standard pack in Apple USB connector.
I get the "Itunes cannot read the contents of ipod. Go to the summary tab in Ipod preferences and click Restore to restore this ipod to factory settings." message. When I go to the preferences tab, I click restore and iTunes gets stuck trying to restore my iPod. Then I have to uplug my iPod. And Shutdown/Restart my PC reconnect my iPod, and go through the restore process again.
I have been doing this for as I said, a month. It's getting pretty grueling to keep havomh putting cotent on my iPod after these restores.
    I've tried everything.
I've stopped autosync, it still happens.
I tried to reinstall iTunes(be it I didn't full uninstall before trying to install again and got the option to fix corrupted files and such
I've deleted all old back up, and it still happens
Today is the fist time I'm fully uninstalling iTunes, and then reinstalling to see if this works.
But do you guys have any otehr solutions for this? As I said, this didn't start happening until I installed the lastest version of iTunes 10.6.3

    - Have you tried another cable?
    - Another USB port?
    - When you have the problem, connect it to another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.
    - Try just restoring the iPod to factory settings/new iPod. Do not restore from backup. If you still have the problem with this and all computer that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • ITunes Reports "iTunes Cannot read the contents of the iPod...."

This morning I connected my 2 week old iPod Classic to my laptop via the USB cable and iTunes came up and displayed a message saying "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod MHAM'S IPOD". It suggested a restore, which I have not tried yet. I have faithfully used the "Eject" function in iTunes to disconnect. After reading some other posts in the forums, it appears that others are having a similar issue. I'm concerned that this is normal operating behavior for this product. Given that this is my first Apple brand purchase, I'm a little turned off to the brand. Does anyone have a suggestion that doesn't involve me wiping this thing clean and starting over? And is this something that I should just expect? I ran a diagnostic and the results are below.

The iPod updater logging file cannot be found.

I had this same exact issue happen to me this morning, and I lost 40 gigs worth of transferring in restoring it. I put a few albums on for the day, and when I tried connecting again this evening, the same thing happened. It hit me when it happened the second time that both times I had the iPod locked when it connected it to the computer. I'm pretty sure I've never accidentally connected it while locked before. My guess it that it is unable to read the content since the iPod is locked, and somehow this causes some sort of corruption that prevents it from seeing the files until a restoration is done. I would think Apple should be able to release an update which would detect if the iPod was locked and tell you to unlock it rather than to go through this process of losing all your music from the iPod. It scares me to think this could happen again simply if I am absent-minded in the future and forget to check whether it is locked or not before I connect it.

  • ITunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined

There are dozens of reports on this bug on the forums, and not one of the suggestions worked for me.  After reading slocks post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/17157627#17157627, I noticed that iTunes did indeed back up different apps each time I quit, restarted, and re-attempted sync, and that it always failed on the same one (USA Today in my case).  I deleted USA Today from my phone, quit and restarted iTunes, and synced again.  iTunes reinstalledUSA Today for some reason, but the sync completed then successfully, and all subsequent syncs also complete successfully.  I then noticed that the App Store was promptimg me to update USA Today, which I did fully expecting that the update would cause the problem to recurr, but it did not.  So it appears a corrupt app is causing this problem, and deleting the app from your phone may resolve it.
If you are getting this error, my suggestion is to watch during the sync, and note which application is being copied when the sync fails.  Delete that app from your iPhone, and try to sync again.  Please post the results here.  Thanks!

For me app wasn't the problem, the problem was the app needed updating.  I updated all in my iPhone, but that wasn't doing it.  I followed what someone else did and updated my apps "in iTunes" and it was perfect!

    Confirmed!
I was getting the same error message. After reading your post, I updated all my apps in iTunes. Sync worked as normal after that. Now we'll have to see if this happens again when other apps are updated.

  • Mass Storage Device Drivers have been corrupted itunes 7.0.2 cant fix it

My ipods mass storage device drivers have been corrupted (Device cannot be started Code 10). Itunes 7.0.2 cant fix it. Im not willing to uninstall itunes and reinstall it to fix problem. I have 2 librarys on my hard drive with the guts of 120g of tunes/vids i know i wont lose the data but just dont want to mess with it. Is there any other way to fix the corrupted driver? Itunes 7 is great but they really should have the ipods driver seperate

I have uninstalled itunes 7.0.2 and installed the default itunes 6 software and ipod software then i updated to 7.0.2 and still same problem. Obviously the corruption is Windows related, but still cant work out the problem

  • Itunes cannot run because some of the required files are missing?

This morning when I turned on my computer my itunes was suddenly not working. When I double click the desktop icon to open it up, I get an error message that reads:
iTunes cannot run because some of the required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes.
I searched the FAQ archive and still cannot find an answer to my problem.
THe last part of the error message says to reinstall itunes, but I cannot even get the corrupt version off. Is there anyway to save the music I have on here? Another user and I have separate iTUnes music, so a great deal of music will be lost, including things recently purchased.

Thank you so very much. I don't know why I didn't think of that but it is up and running fine now

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • ITunes cannot find files even though the path is correct in Preferences

Hello: I have a problem that is not addressed in any support article.
When I click to play a song in iTunes, I get the message that iTunes cannot find the original file.
When I check Preferences > Advanced > iTunes folder locations, I see all of my files there, but iTunes does not.
I have reset, consolodated the library, and performed all tasks noted in the support articles. Still no luck.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks very much.

I had the same thing happen and have been pulling my hair out about this for a week now. Finally today I hit on a fix that worked for me and I hope it works for you.
For this to work, you need a backup of the last saved iTunes Library file.
First, follow directions about locating your iTunes music folder. In prefs>advanced choose your location and make sure that is right.
Locate your last saved iTunes Library file (the one that was working before things went haywire with the !'s everywhere). Also locate the iTunes prefs file in ~/library/prefs. For me, these were part of a Backup, so I selected "restore" ONLY THESE particular files from my last backup. When prompted to replace existing files, I said YES.
After backup ran, restoring the old Library and replacing the corrupted one, I relaunched iTunes and VOILA. All files were now correctly linked.
This left one last task, re-importing all songs I'd imported since that previous backup. To find these, I sorted my music folder by date modified and checked the most recent songs against the most recent in my Library. (sort your iTunes LIbrary by "Date Added", which you can add manually if it's not part of your categories bar.

  • When trying to udate iTunes on my PC, I recieve the error message "The older version of iTunes cannot be removed"  How do I correct this error and not lose all the music I have in iTunes?

When trying to update my version of iTunes on my PC with Windows 7,  I receive the error message "The older version of iTunes cannot be romoved".  How do I correct this problem without losing all the music that I have in iTunes on my PC?

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • TS1538 Hi, I have the problem which iTunes cannot detect my iPhone 4s. I tried the steps you have provided in your troubleshooting, but it won't work for me because the Apple Mobile Devilce is perfectly installed on my windows.

Hi, I have the problem which iTunes cannot detect my iPhone 4s. I tried the steps you have provided in your troubleshooting, but it won't work for me because the Apple Mobile Devilce is perfectly installed on my windows. However, the driver "Microsoft teredo Tunneling adapter" has a yellow exclamation mark, which i believe means it's not installed correctly or something is wrong with it. This driver is under the Network Adapters (Please see picture below).
This is what happens when I connect my iPhone 4s to my laptop (Windows 7 Starter 32-bit)
    1. The phone charges it's battery
    2. I can open it in My Computer and import/export media files.
    In iTunes
    3. It start to sync until step 3 then stops.
    4. The iPhone option with an arrow appears beside the iTunes Store, but when the arrow is clicked it disappears.
I hope you can provide me a solution for this problem.
    Thanks,
    Ralph

    Hi ralphagir,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
For your iTunes issue with it not recognizing your iPhone, I would go ahead and suggest deleting iTunes and all of its components from your Windows computer and installing fresh.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
As far as the arrow button that you click and the iPhone disappears, it sounds like you may be clicking on the eject button. Please take a look at the following article for information on the eject button in iTunes.
