Corrupted jpegs/movs after recovery...

Hello,
I've read other pots here about this situation, but I'm still stuck with corrupted files.
I used data rescue to recover deleted files from an old drive. Worked well and found a lot of good files (including many flawless jpegs). But the jpegs from an old iPhoto library are ALL corrupted (they're the right size though, so most of the data should still be there). And the videos (mov format) are also the right size but won't play on any viewer.
Any ideas on how I can fix those files?
Thanks,
Loa

Yes I confirm. I first posted a problem regarding the Exporting of JPG's out of Lightroom in this thread here:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b63f9d/2
Following advice contained in that thread my thinking changed somewhat and I believed that the problem might have been in dpMagic - a small application that allows one to view CR2 images in Windows Explorer along with other file formats. I subsequently contacted dpMagic who asked me to forward a few problem images along with screenshots from Explorer when it crashed along with a screenshot of the Event Log. Here is the reply that I received from them this morning:
thanks you for the detailed information. We were able to reproduce the
problem. It is originated from the corrupted exif info in the jpeg image.
The next published version of the application will be resistable to such
kind of errors.
with the best regards
Eugen Shashkou dpMagic DEV
It would appear after all then that Lightroom is causing corruption of Exported JPG files. I have no way of knowing in which way the EXIF data is being corrupted, and whilst dpMagic say that the next version will be 'resistable' I would much prefer Adobe to see what is causing the corrupted EXIF data in the first place.
Could one of the mods kindly post a bug regarding this matter referring Adobe to this thread if necessary. It would be appreciated - thanks.

    Sounds to me like the file is probably corrupt. If you had hard drive corruption or damage, that could easily result in recovered files not being fully intact. If you were trying to recover accidentally deleted files, it's possible they might have been partially overwritten before recovering. There are never any guarantees with file recovery.
    Without more information on the circumstances that led you to try recovery, it's hard to give advice on what to try from here. You could always try another file recovery tool, like Data Rescue 3. Just be sure you're taking appropriate precautions when doing recovery. See Recovering deleted files.

    Doing another System Recovery and while upgrading to Windows 7 it was recomended I uninstall HP MediaSmart Photo/Video/Movie since it might not be compatible w/ W7, which I did. Hi,
    The download page for a lot of notebooks often has multiple entries for the same software - for both drivers and other software, just install the latest version.
    When you believe that you have installed all relevant software and drivers, you can always check by opening windows Control Panel and then opening Device Manager - look for any entry here that has a warning icon ( yellow triangle ) next to it.  If you find any, right click on the problem device and select Properties.  Click the Details tab, choose Hardware Ids from the dropdown box and post back with the details shown under Value.

  • After recovery, admin password filled in with "dots" and cannot delete or change it

    Hello.
    I ran the Windows 7 updates yesterday, but only the necessary ones.  I did not install any of the optional ones.  After the updates completed, I turned the computer on and it was stuck in a loop cycle - starting windows, then the admin password log in box came up.  The box was fiiled in (with "dots" but too many to represent my password) and the screen just quickly flashed back & forth between the log in screen and "password incorrect".     I tried to switch user, and it flashed back to the admin log in.
    I did a system recovery to factory defaults (after backing up all data)  using the recovery discs.  After recovery, the "Set a password for account" screen comes up with the box below "Type a password" filled in completely with dots.  I cannot erase them with the backspace or delete keys.  If I highlight it and then try erase it with backspace or delete, the cursor just moves to the right hand side of the password box, but it still doesn't delete the faulty password "dots" so that I can change it.
    I tried to reboot by holding in the power button and then turning it back on.  After selecting country & language again, the same password screen come up.
    It is stuck!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I computer I have  is the HP TouchSmart 310 PC 1155-Y.
    Thank You!
    This question was solved.

    That is curious with a Recovery.  First, try to reset the password using NTPassword.  Make the CD, boot to it  following the directions.  If that does not solve the signon problem, consider installing the OS from a regular Windows 7 disk of the same version, using the key from the COA sticker.

  • Severe corruption of .MOV files in Lightroom & unusable processing speed

    Hi all,
    I run on an Intel i7 quad core, 12 GB Ram, 2 GB Graphics Card (nvidia), Raid 0, 2x512 GB Harddisk space (1 TB), Windows Vista 64bit using the latest cut of Lightroom 3.4.1 64bit.
    Using a Canon 7D with latest firmware updates, for RAW/JPG/MOV - this is the only source of all files that I currently use in Lightroom.
    First Question regarding corruption of .MOV files:
    Once I copy my files over from the camera onto my computer, I can play all .MOV files seemlessly with no flaws or hiccups (using multiple movie players), after I import the files in the directory (this includes the .JPG's, .RAW's, and .MOV's) into Lightroom, my .MOV files no longer play on my computer, the files begin to stutter and jolt, and are completely unusable. You can imagine my frustration as I've only recently added a huge chunk of my files to be cataloged by Lightroom, resulting in the last years worth of .MOV files being corrupted and ruined.
    I am wondering if anyone has had this issue before and if they've found a way to fix it? I understand I could simply un-tick the import of .MOV files (and do so from now on), but I find it baffling that Lightroom is ruining the .MOV files - as it's not actually meant to touch the original files themselves is it? It's meant to add it's own layer of things to do to that file, stored in its own catalogue never meant to actually change the original files themselves.
    Second question regarding unusable processing speed:
    When DEVELOPing in Lightroom (I develop on two 24" monitors, both displaying at 1920x1200) it can take anywhere between 10-20 seconds for what I'm actually doing to take effect, ie. spot removal or changing the noise levels of a photo. My catalog currently has 10438 photos in it - is this overwhelming for Lightroom?
    I love Lightroom and its functionality - when I first started using it these problems didn't seem to exist, so I'm unaware if it's an update or if it's just the increase in photos it has catalog'd that're bogging it down. I would love to resolve these matters as Lightroom is definitely where I want to be.
    regards,
    Emilio

    Thanks for your response,
    After what you said, in having absolutely no issue with .MOV files, I decided to ensure every drive on my computer was up-to-date and all software packages were final cut versions.
    When I started playing my .MOV files (using VLC version 1.1.10 as standard), the files played fine after a graphics card update/VLC update/Windows system update/computer reboot (Lightroom NOT loaded) - So you are absolutely right, Lightroom is NOT in any way affecting my original .MOV Files, however:
    When I then loaded Lightroom up, and started to then play my .MOV files (whilst Lightroom was running, and still using VLC (standard default player) (no other packages loaded), the files would begin to jolt/jitter/ struggle to play again.
    If I monitor Task manager/Resources the only noticable heavy usage on Lightroom is having dedicated itself 1.7 GB of memory (not that much considering 12 GB is available), but also that clicking on any picture (whilst in grid-view, showing .CR2+.JPG as one, second monitor showing preview image) all of my 8 CPU's would spike to 90-100% for a second or so then drop down - fair enough.
    I then close Lightroom and my .MOV files still don't play accurately - after a while (approx 30 minutes) my .MOV files will play seemlessly fine again.
    So, I stand corrected that Lightroom is, in fact, NOT corrupting my files and regret my title choice, but is Lightroom doing something to my system which is making it hang/struggle whilst Lightroom seems to flush/go through its buffer?
    Also what import preview do you set your catalog to? 1:1 then wait for it to complete the full import or standard?
    Another major issue I'm having is when exporting multiple files (200+ or so), I notice the exporting process is fast initially then dramatically slows down my whole computer as all my RAM (the full 12 GB's) gets sucked up - after 60 or so photo exports Lightroom would have used the full 12 GB Ram I have available, and stopping the export does NOT free up the Ram - I need to completely close Lightroom (which then frees up the used RAM).
    Thanks in advanced

  • JPEG Movie Segment Work

    Hi,
    I have a jpeg movie file 60 mins long and a text file tell me five time-lines for breaking the movie. For example, break the movie at 10:21, 16:05
    The final output should be five small jpeg movie files. Each file contains a 90 sec (30 sec before the break time and 60 sec after the break time).
    Do you know any java library (jar) contain the library that can help me on programming this? Any existing source code? Any SDK for a movie editor can do that?
    Please help.

  • Getting JPEG Library Error for Corrupt JPEG Data using CS5

    After recently upgrading to CS5 I am getting JPEG Library Errors for corrupt JPEG data. I have my old PC still in use that uses CS4 and does not generate these errors when accessing the same site. Could someone please assist me in how to get rid of these errors using CS5? I can't find help out there anywhere for this!
    Thanks in advance!

    You could use Photoshop's Image Processor to open all of your jpegs in a given folder, make a slight tweek and resave them in the hopes of cleaning out any errors that DW is hitting. It's worth a shot maybe.
    1. In PS go to File > Scripts > Image Processor
    2. For Step 1, browse to a folder in your site with jpeg issues
    3. For Step 2, choose save in same location
    4. For Step 3, choose Save as JPEG and check Convert File to sRGB
    5. Click Run
    This will create a sub folder called JPEG with the images resaved there. You can drag them into the parent folder to replace the originals.
    If you haven't already, make sure to report the bug here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
    At least the right people will be made aware of it then and if it's common enough to trip whatever quantity/user reports system they use, it would get included for repair.
    I honestly don't think it's a "bug" per se, since the forum isn't absolutely flooded with the problem.

  • DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND error after recovery on a CDS database

    I am getting a DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND error after recovery, with a database that is configured in CDS mode. The error occurs after I insert several rows, bring down the process, remove the environment files and start the process which attempts to insert additional rows - gets a DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND error. The error persists ie. terminating and starting a new oprocess does not resolve the problem.
    Amy help will be appreciated.

    Assuming, that the db is corrupted and that CDS db's can get corrupted - is there any way, I can reduce the frequency of these errors by increasing Cache, page size etc.?
    Following is my DB configuration:
                   dbEnv_->open(envHome_.c_str(), envFlags_, 0);
                    dbEnv_->set_errpfx(envHome_.c_str());
                    dbEnv_->set_thread_count(16);
                    dbEnv_->set_cachesize(0,(100*1024*1024),2);
                    envFlags_ =   DB_INIT_CDB | DB_THREAD | DB_INIT_MPOOL ;
                    envFlags_ |=  DB_CREATE ;
                    dbEnv_->open(envHome_.c_str(), envFlags_, 0);
    db->set_pagesize((32*1024));
                db->open(NULL, temp.c_str(), tableName.c_str(),\
                    DB_BTREE, DB_CREATE | DB_THREAD , S_IRUSR | S_IWUSR);
                    dbEnv_->open(envHome_.c_str(), envFlags_, 0);
    The platform is HPUX. The problems occurs periodically - i.e. not every time.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Corrupt JPEG Data

    Whenever I open the Assets tab in Dreamweaver 8 (am using XP

    Corrupt JPEG data: 11 extraneous bytes before marker 0xdb . The

    number (0xd9, 0xc4, etc.)

    Most likely because the image has a corrupted data segment
    that your limited
    test of software chooses to ignore?

  • Fixing slightly corrupt JPEGs

    I'm having a problem with iPhoto 7.1.3. My camera (a Canon D60) occasionally generates slightly corrupt JPEGs. They work just fine via Quick Look or in Preview, but iPhoto can't import them. I know I can fix them by opening them up in Preview and re-saving them, but this loses a generation as I'm recompressing the file.
    Does anyone know of a program I can use that rewrites the internal structure of a JPEG file without going through the decompress-recompress cycle? I know it's not as simple as that, of course, but I'm looking to come as close as possible to that idea.

    If you use the Best Quality level in Preview it actually creates a larger file than the original. None of the information will be lost.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • DW Windows claims corrupt JPEGs; Mac doesn't

    When I open a certain site in DW 8.0.2 Windows, it complains
    that some of the JPEGs are corrupt (it won't say which) by bringing
    up a "Corrupt JPEG data" dialog and sometimes an additional dialog
    complaining about data after a certain marker.
    However, opening the same site in the Macintosh version
    reveals no problems at all, even when the site images are exact
    copies. No browser has any problems with any file on the site, and
    a wide selection of graphics programs on both platforms have no
    problem opening any of the files.
    Is the Windows version ultra-picky about JPEG conformity? Is
    it a bug? And in any event, how do I locate the files that DW Win
    dislikes (that's quicker than dismissing a string of dialog boxes,
    ie does not involve removing blocks of images until the problem
    goes away and then putting them back again)?
    Any observations welcome.
    Thanks,

    I have a corrupt jpeg on my desktop. It has duplicated itself 450,000 times freezing my finder. I have reinstalled 10.6.8 but not freed up the desktop. I have managed to delete the corrupt jpeg from a shared imac but cannot delete the duplicates. Any ideas

    This can be done from Single User Mode. You're going to need a little nerve though since everything is command line based.
    1) Enter Single User Mode by restarting and holding down Command+S on the keyboard. A whole bunch of UNIX stuff will go by on the screen in white text on a black background. When it's done, the command prompt will be sitting at:
    :/root#
    2) Above that, you'll see that it tells you to enter two commands. Run this one first by typing it in and pressing enter:
    /sbin/fsck/ -fy
    This does a system file check. A good thing to do in your case as it may be damaged. It could take a while. When it's done, you'll be back at the :/root# prompt.
    3) Enter the second command and press enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    4) Type the following at the prompt:
    cd /Users/name/Desktop
    Where it says "name" above, the short name of your user account goes there. If you're not sure what it is, first type:
    cd /Users
    Then type:
    ls
    That's a lower case L, not a one. It stands for "list". You'll get a listing of all files and folders in the Users folder. So if your short account name is diane, then the command will be:
    cd /Users/diane/Desktop
    After entering that command, the prompt should read:
    :Desktop root#
    Type:
    rm *.jpg
    Be very careful to type is exactly as shown. rm followed by a space, then *.jpg. Press enter and all files ending in .jpg will be deleted from the Desktop folder. With 450,000 of them, you could be waiting a while for the prompt to come back.
    Type:
    exit
    and press enter to boot back into OS X.

    My first advice is "Back up the device, then have it replaced."  Second item of advice, "Don't forget your passcode."
    One of the purposes of the lock button is to recover from certain software failures.  Without the lock button, such a recovery is nearly impossible.  My advice would have served you best when the malfuction first developed, not after you forgot your passcode.

    Can anyone give me advice on how to deal with a corrupted itunes movie rental? I tried to download a movie and have been continuously trying to download it through the "check for available downloads" option, but it will not download.

    I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
    Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
    Find the item that is not downloading properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
    (Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

  • HD icon moves after restart

    Hi, silly, but annoying problem. Recently, my HD icon moves after I restart my machine. Only icon to do this. I usually keep it in the upper right hand corner, but now it seems happier in the lower right hand corner - below a folder I have there. This is really annoying. I keep moving it back, and the stubborn fella returns below. I tried in preferences to uncheck it and then recheck it, but no go. Any thoughts? It's driving me crazy. Even more, why did it just decide to change zip codes?
    Thanks all.

    You might try Onyx or Yasu (utilities that are donation ware/freeware) and delete the ds.store files which are supposed to keep track of this. You could also delete your user finder plist(com.apple.finder.plist). If the files are corrupted then they can mess things up.
    Also, as Ali says, putting them too close to the side of the screen is like telling the icon " Your master has screwed up and you are free to go where ever you want now.". Put it close to the upper right corner where you want then let the Finder accurately place it by selecting View and then Cleanup.
    Occasionally, my icons like to wander. I just get used to it (or have been beaten down by it) and no longer ask why.
