Corrupted Keynote file--any fixes?

Are there any fixes for a corrupted Keynote file? The cause of the corrupted file is unknown. I'm trying to open it with Keynote 1.1, I'll try opening it with Keynote 2 later on.
Thanks,
Ashley

A Keynote file is really a directory. Make a copy of the bad file/directory. Then ctrl-click on the copy and use the "Show Package Contens" option to look inside. A lot of stuff will probably look familar to you and you should be able to check the integrity of a lot of the stuff in the directory using other applications.
Now I cannot say that I have had this problem or tried this, but this approach might be useful. You might want to start with a copy of known good Keynote file (directory) and explore it first.

  • "zip" Terminal command no help fixing corrupt zip file; any other workarounds?

I downloaded a ".zip" file containing some files that I need to access.
When I double-click on it, I get the "Unable to unarchive 'xyz.zip' into '[foldername].' ( Error 1 - Operation not permitted )" message, which many people report when they try to open a corrupt zip file.
I also tried opening the file with "StuffIt Expander," "Archive Utility," and "The Unarchiver," as well as some specialty zip-compression programs, but none were successful.
I then installed the very useful "Archive.qlgenerator" plugin (http://homepage.mac.com/xdd/software/archive/) which allowed me to at least see inside the zip file using OSX's "QuickLook" feature. Lo and behold, all the files that were supposed to be in the zip file are indeed in there, as they should be. The problem is not that the zip file is empty, the problem is that it has become corrupted somehow.
So, what I need to do is either "fix" the corrupted zip file, or alternately find some way to extract the needed files using brute force.
Following tips given on various forums, I tried using OSX's "zip" command in terminal (http://homepage.mac.com/kelleherk/iblog/C1901548470/E731143104/index.html and http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=132146). I was able to use it properly, but unfortunately neither the "-F" nor the "-FF" commands were of any helping in "fixing" the zip file. The "-F" command incorrectly said that the zip file was empty and that there was nothing to fix; the stronger "-FF" command came back with
    Could not find:
      xzy.z01
Hit c      (change path to where this split file is)
        s      (skip this split)
        q      (abort archive - quit)
e      (end this archive - no more splits)
z      (look for .zip split - the last split)
or ENTER  (try reading this split again):
...but none of the options produced any result. Pressing "z" gave me
    Could not find or open
      xyz.zip
...which means that even "-FF" could not get past whatever problem had corrupted the file.
So: is there any built-in way for Mac OSX to fix or extract the contents of a zip file corrupted like this?
Alternately, is there any third-party shareware or freeware that will do the trick?
(I don't want to have to spend big $$$ on a commercial program since all I need to do is open a single zip file. And there is no way to contact the zip file's original creator, so I can't download an uncorrupted version.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Mark:
When I try your first suggestion in Terminal ("unzip -t /path/to/file"), I get this message:
    Archive:  /xyz.zip
End-of-central-directory signature not found.  Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive.  In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip:  cannot find zipfile directory in one of /xyz.zip or
/xyz.zip.zip, and cannot find /xyz.zip.ZIP, period.
When I try your second suggestion ("unzip -l /path/to/file"), I get the exact same error message. (And yes, I am fixing "/path/to/file" to be the correct path to the actual file).
And no, it is not really part of a multi-part archive. (Or at least it wasn't supposed to be; only one zip file is available, and there was only supposed to one.) Perhaps the zip was mis-encoded in the first place, so that the person who created it accidentally did something wrong which the unzip applications are interpreting as this file being part of a multi-part archive; but even so, all I have is this one file, so I need to fix it as is, or extract its contents as is, since I have no way to contact the original creator to do it right this time.

  • Corrupted domain file - any repair software out there?

Having just upgraded to iLife09 after a few uses of iWeb I now can't access my intensely-worked on website file - the apple support guy took me through lots of ways to see whether it was iWeb or the domain file where everything is saved which was the problem. Apparently it's the domain file (although I now can't get into iWeb again either - although I managed once or twice after we took the domain file out, and it was like I had never been there..all blank). He suggested I search for software created to repair domain files which are corrupted. Basically all my website is in the domain file, it's sitting on my desktop now, and I can't access use it. I did do a back-up, but manually, and I ignorantly backed up the wrong file - one that had already been published to the desktop - which can't be re-imported either... I have a lot to learn.

I've created an Automator workflow that will backup the contents of the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Documents folder. It can be used any time, like after you publish. If you have an external HD you can edit the workflow with Automator to save to a different destination. It's called iWeb Domain File Backup and can be downloaded from Toad's Cellar .
I used it before I got Synk Standard which does incremental backups, i.e. copies only those new or modified files in the domain files - much faster than copying the entire domain file.

  • Is there ANY way to fix a corrupt InDesign file??

My computer crashed last night and the InDesign file i was working on seems to have been corrupted.
When i try to open the file i get the following message:
"Adobe Indesign automatic recovery failed the last time it tried to open the document"
when i click yes to begin recovery, InDesign crashes. i've deleted the prefs and cache files and restarted, but the problem persists.
I can open other InDesign files, so the problem seems to be with this particular one.
is there any fix at all??!??! this is a 60+ page document and i am on deadline.
p.s. my backup copy seems to have gotten corrupted in the process as well, so i am really concerned.
    OS X 10.5.1
    InDesign 5.0.2
    thanks for any assistance.

    Ok, here's what's next.
Have you trashed your InD prefs? This might be a good place to start. You'll have to search for the specs on doing this, I don't have that info handy. But it's a good place to start.
If that doesn't help, let's see if there's something in your OS that's causing the crash -
Do a "safe boot" - restart, hold down the shift key during startup till you see the words "Safe Boot" on the startup screen. This will disable any non-apple extensions and fonts. I'm starting to think you've got a bad font.
Now, in SafeBoot mode, try to open the file. Try to save the file. Try to Export and INX. If all of this works better than during the regular startup then we've hit on something. If a safeboot is helpful, consider an archive and install of the OS. Could be something got corrupted.
If the safeboot doesn't help, here's what's next:
You might try working with the file in under a new user account that hasn't had a million drivers and extension added to it. Here's a rough outline of the steps I have in mind (though you'll have to figure this out yourself)
First, set the permissions for all the job files to Read-Write for all users. If you don't do this, the new-user won't be able to open the files.
Create a new user account, call it "Clean Account". Reboot into the clean account.
Now try to work with the job. Any luck? Missing fonts? Move the job fonts into the clean user account. Are you crashing now? Bingo - it's a bad font. Are you in better shape now in the clean user? Bingo - it's some driver, haxie or extension.
Maybe you're due for an "Archive and Install" from the original system disks, or even a "Clean Install" if you've got a free weekend to rebuild your environment.
I guess there's also re-install the app, though I've never had to do that. But it's harmless to try.
these are just ideas - something is wrong - corrupted - bad. Could be in the OS, InD, a bad font, even a bad placed EPS (you don't use EPS files, do you?). So I'm just thinking out loud. These are all good trouble shooing options.
And check the disk with a utility. You didn't say that you'd done that.

  • How to fix a corrupt .avi file (from capture in CS3)?

So I was recording a VERY long meeting at work and recorded it to my PC via Premiere. Since the recording was unattended, the file size is 275GB! I didn't really think anything would go wrong since I have recorded large .avi files in the past.
Well when I try to import the .avi or play it in media player, it is saying it is corrupt/wrong file format. I tried a few avi repair utilities and none of them fixed it. I'm guessing the avi headers are missing, but I thought Premiere wrote progressive .avi files (at least their export is progressive and valid while its writing).
Any help to repair salvage the avi? I only need about 50% of the actual content.

    >wonder why you can view a video that is currently being exported
    Seeing what the computer is
DOING while it is doing it is really not the same as trying to open a file after the fact
I have an inexpensive standalone DVD recorder to be able to move a movie from a DirecTv Tivo box in one part of the house to a DVD player in another part of the house
I can watch the video on the TV while it is playing from the DTivo box to the DVD recorder
If I do not properly CLOSE the disc when the recording is done, the DVD will not play
An improperly closed file is, as you found, not going to work
As I said, my best GUESS is that hitting the full point on the drive caused needed information to not be written to the header (or file end) and now any software you use to try and play or edit that file doesn't know what the file
IS because the identity is lost
I will guess that is also why the AVI repair programs you've tried won't work... they need to have some starting information to work, otherwise the contents of the file are just so much random "noise"

  • Every time I open a new illustrator file it says "print.ai" file unknown.  I can open previous work but no new files.  Any fixes?

Every time I open a new illustrator file it says "print.ai" file unknown.  I can open previous work but no new files.  Any fixes?

All nee AI files are based on document profiles, which are actually plain AI files.
Print.ai is one of them. You may try and select a different profile to see if it's just the Print.ai
But it may of course be all of them that somehow got corrupt.
Could be that the files are corrupt or that Illustrator doesn't have access privileges.
The files are located in your user folder. Find the exact location in this article:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/adobeillustrator/2009/05/startup_profiles_a_great_tool.html
In case the files are completely corrupt you may try and rebuild the preferences or even do a complete reinstall.

  • How to fix Keynote files when migrated from iPad2 to new iPad2?

My iPad2 was stolen.  I have backed up just few days before the incident.  Since I use it for business presentation a lot, I bought a new iPad2, and restored from my Mac from the backed up copy, thinking all would be restored as it was before.
However, many things were missing, which I could bare (not essential stuff).
The most critical one is my Keynote presentations.  Now I could see all of the presentations in Keynote, but they are only black icons, with the correct file name and sizes.  These black presentation icons cannot be opened at all.  I wonder if this can be fixed, and to prevent any future losses, is there a way to backup these presentation files automatically (anything I've missed out, apart from exporting them to elsewhere, manually)?
    Thank you.

I'd suggest first creating an archive of the Keynote files (using Create Archive from the Finder's File menu), and see if those transfer properly.
(According to the freeware app Error Codes, that error occurs when the app you are trying to run is in the Trash -- that's not the problem, is it?)

  • TS2647 My keynote files keeps saving my document as a package even though "Save new documents as packages" is not selected. I also do not have Stuffit Expander on my system. Any ideas why this is happening?

My Keynote file is NOT creating a single file but creating a folder with all the decks files.
    1. I have "Save new documents as packages" deselected in Keynote preferences. And…
    2. I do not have StuffIt Expander on my system.
    Any suggestions.

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • Fixing corrupt JPG files

Is there any good software out there for fixing corrupt JPG files?

Corruption damage in a .JPG entails data loss and the JPEG format does not contain redundancy, so there's no way to recover what's lost. Usually if the damage is found towards the end of the file, you can "recover" the good part by truncating it. If you want to do it interactively, you can try using software such as [The Gimp|http://www.gimp.org>, or its (very) expensive brother, Photoshop.
To do it automatically (batch mode) you can investigate if any of the tools in the [Image Magick package|http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php] helps. Note that these are command-line Unix tools.

  • KeyNote files corrupted by Zip-compressing!

I've heard of people getting KeyNote files corrupted so that they are unopenable. I'd never experienced it until I Zip-compressed the file in the finder. Upon uncompressing, the file is corrupt and will NOT open. Yikes!! (Fortunately, I have the original still).
This is serious if it is general. Can anyone else tell me if they see this (and a possible solution to fix a file corrupted in this way).
Info: KeyNote '08 (4.0.3), intel mac. System 10.5.2

I have had that problem, and it happens when the source Keynote file is on an external (firewire) drive. If I copy the file to the root/main drive THEN zip it, it works fine.
....and this happens on multiple Macs and multiple external drives.

  • Corrupted music files not even the support can fix it

    Try to figure this out.
    1 - I had an iphone 3GS where i had music files.
    2 - I got an iphone 4
3 - I copied all the songs i had on my 3Gs to the 4
4 - They all work fine
5 - When i copy new songs on my 4 ALL of them are corrupted
6 - When i play them on my computer all of them ARE NOT corrupted
The 3GS has gone i can't test on it.
Now, why old songs works fine on the iphone 4 but when i get new songs them are not working, but they do work fine on my computer? Hardware problems but the songs i had on my 3GS do work fine, if it was the hardwere them all should be corrupted, corrupted files but they all work fine on my computer, so they are not corrupted, transfering files from the computer to the iphone but then why only the new ones are still corrupted, where is the problem? i don't get this fixed i give up the iphones and move to android, i have enought or wasting money, the support has no idea how to fix it.Thanks.

  • Want to open Kodak Photo CD files (.PCD) in Photoshop CS5.  In CS4 i copied file "Photo CD.8BI"  from an older version into the File Format folder.  This does not work with CS5.  Any fix?

I have several old Kodak Photo CD with PCD image files.  I am now using Photoshop CS5.  Some years ago while using Photoshop CS4 I copied a file:  "Photo CD.8BI" from an older, CS2, version to the Plug-ins/File Format folder of CS4.  This does not appear to work with CS5.  Any fix?

It can be made to work, but you have to run the 32 bit version of Photoshop CS5, and as I recall there's an additional DLL called pcdlib32.dll that's needed from the old installation.

  • Attempting to upgrade to Firefox 3.6 (using an ancient Mac OS 10.3), but received an error message (corrupt image file) when downloading - any way to correct this with my current OS?

I'm currently trying to update a few programs on my good old (VERY old) Mac Powerbook, but I ran into an error when downloading Firefox version 3.6...I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.3.9, which isn't compatible with the most recent versions of Firefox (or anything, for that matter), but it should still allow an upgrade of version 3.6; however, once the file finished downloading, an error message popped up indicating there's a corrupt image file. Is there any way to work around/correct this problem, or am I stuck with my old version of Firefox until I bite the bullet and upgrade my OS??? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Firefox 3.6 requires at least OS X 10.4, the last version of Firefox that runs on OS X 10.3.9 is Firefox 2.0.0.20 available from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.20/mac/en-US/
