Corrupted letters in ClearScan pdf.

Hi, ClearScan OCR corrupted some letters in my pdf. This is how it looks in Chrome and Adobe Reader on Android:
It looks OK in Acrobat though.
Any idea how to fix that?
Thanks!

Could you please share the sample file?
Thanks

  • PDF/X makes the scrolling speed of ClearScan PDFs much faster

    Hello all,
I am using 9 and X (trial) to find the best solution for reading scanned documents on Mac and iPad. I recently found that ClearScan OCR makes scanned black and white PDFs very light. Consequently, scrolling of PDFs on Mac and iPad becomes faster than regular bitmap PDFs.
However, there is a problem in ClearScan that bitmap image area become heavier than the original scanned files. I usually scan paper documents with a resolution of 600 dpi and downsample them to 600 dpi when OCRing. So theoretically, scrolling and pinch zoom in/out speed in Preview.app should be the same between the original documents and OCRed ones. You will be able to reproduce this problem if you OCR the following PDF. Try ClearScan + 600 dpi downsample + US English.
    http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?db_key=AST&bibcode=1990ARA%2 6A..28..215D&letter=0&classic=YES&defaultprint=YES&whole_paper=YES&page=215&epage=215&send =Send+PDF&filetype=.pdf
But if I export OCRed document as PDF/X after saving it as a regular PDF, the bitmap area become very light and scrolling speed in Preview.app becomes very fast, while I get a preflight error when exporting to PDF/X. The file size of the exported document becomes about two times larger than the regular ClearScan PDF.
My question is; What is the main difference between regular PDFs and PDF/X? How can I get the same effect of the scrolling speed difference without exporting regular PDFs to PDF/X which is heavier? Any technique?

    Hello lrosenth,
Thank you for your comment. As you mentioned, I do not need to use PDF/X in fact because I do not send them to DTP companies.
Is there any tips to change the scrolling speed faster without using PDF/X? I do not know why the image part of regular PDFs after ClearScan is heavier than the originals.

  • Converting corrupted pages file to PDF - URGENT :c

Ive got a very important work file i need to either be de-corrupted or have the PDF file pulled out (as I've heard some people can do).
It has at least 100-200 hours of work in and I just don't think I can go on with my work course without it, ill have to redo a whole year.
If there is anyone who can help me, Ill get you a link for the file in question.
    cheers

It it is a Pages '09 package format file — you can use the Finder to right-click on this document, choose Show Package Contents, and then navigate down into its QuickLook directory. There, the Preview.pdf document can be copied elsewhere, or simply opened in Preview for subsequent copy/paste into a new Pages document.
If it is the default Pages '09 single format file ( a compressed and zipped Pages package format file) then the following Terminal command sequence will get you access to the Preview.pdf document inside the archive, and write it into the current directory location as Preview.pdf. You can subsequently access and process it as you did with Preview in the first paragraph.
    unzip -j filename.pages QuickLook/Preview.pdf
If your document is a Pages v5 (any version variation), there is no PDF stored inside the document, and the preview.jpg is only the very first page. All of the document content is in *.iwa files that only Pages v5 knows how to open. I suspect that they are at minimum compressed, and probably seeded with an encryption key that only Pages knows about. At any rate, there is no way to recover your document from them.

  • Occasional letters missing in pdf document created in Acrobat XI Pro

I have been working on a pdf document created from Indesign By Acrobat XI Pro that will be for online download. The first version was fine. Links had to be added and some of the text coloured. After edits occasional letters have gone missing throughout the document. Why on earth is this happening? I now have to go through the entire document with a fine toothcomb before submitting it to my client again. It doesn't make me look good!
    Any ideas?
    Salli G.

I suspect that you somehow deleted the embedding of the fonts. Check the document properties and be sure all fonts are embedded.

  • How can Hebrew letters in a pdf file be reproduced with Hebrew as a word doc using adobe export pdf?

I subscribe to Adobe Export PDF and it has worked well. Today I uploaded a PDF file with Hebrew letters and the downloaded Word doc did not format the Hebrew letters as Hebrew letters. Is there a way around this?

Try Goodreader in the App Store. It should do the job for you.

  • Existing letters disappear in pdf when I add text box

So I get letters in existing text disappearing as soon as I type anything in a new text box. I have acrobat XI pro running on windows 8.1.
My pdf document looks fine. All the text is there that's suppose to be there. I need to add text boxes on certain pages so I click on 'add text', I click on any area in my document and the text box appears. As soon as I type anything at all 'random' letters disappear throughout my document. I say random because it's an l here, an e there, etc but it's the same letters from the same words that disappear every time. A month ago I was working on the same document doing the exact same thing and had no trouble adding text without having letters disappearing.
I've been playing around with it for several hours now and am ready to punch a hole through the wall.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for 'all' the help (I kid, of course) but I figured it out on my own.
Tried many, many things and what worked in the end was increasing the dpi of the pdf when it was first created. I had it set to 300dpi which was the same default setting for all the other documents I created and manipulated with no problem but for whatever reason it doesn't work now. I tried it at 600dpi and it's fine. All the letters stay put when I add new text boxes. Probably other dpi settings would work also but I haven't tried.

  • How to make greek letters copiable in pdf files?

Ctrl-C will not copy the greek letters in the following pdf file. For example, if I select Lambda, then type ctrl-C, and ctrl-V to somewhere, I will get nothing pasted. Is there a way to modify the pdf so that greek letters can be copied? Thanks.

For normal windows fonts you right click on the font file and there should be an option to install it. I am not sure if it copies the font to the font folder or it is best to move it there first. As far as embedding so it can be copied, that will not help. The MTMI font is embedded in your PDF. The Times New Roman fonts are not. I embed all fonts used as subsets. However, to copy the font to WORD or such and make it useful, you have to have the font on your system, not just embedded.
From the instructions I read, you have to have more than the tfm file. I think the vf file is the font file. That is not the actual font file. There are some instructions at the site I already pointed to. I would check at the site where you are getting the font. I would just have to search to find the instructions for the file. They would help you for working with the font on your system, but would not do the other aspect you wanted of helping others. As I indicated, the font has to be installed locally to enable proper copying. The fonts files are not copied from the PDF.
Since my original question can not be solved unless I get the font installed in my system (but I can't). Let me change my question a bit.
How to search for such a greek letter \Lambda in this pdf file? Is there a walkaround? Is there a tool can help replace the font of \Lambda by something available in my system?

  • Lost letters in created PDF

I have just created a manual from word and inserted quite a few documents throughout then added a number of links. When I look back through to check something I notice that letters like F, Q, M are missing from words and the decimal point between numbers. This is all the way through the created PDF not the attachments. Has this happened to anybody else, is there a fix, I spent 3 hours on this doc?

    1. Check the font embedding using ctrl-D and select the font tab. See what fonts are being used and if they are all embedded. The latter can be done by using the Press or Print job settings.
    2. You did not indicate the job settings. In the printer properties, select the settings tab and be sure you select one with Press or Print in the name (try both if you like to see any differences in size and such). These job settings are set to embed all fonts, even those that are default in Acrobat/Reader.
I will send you a PM with an e-mail so you can return some sample pages you are having problems with (not the entire manual) in both WORD and PDF format. I will then take a look.

  • Corrupted characters when combining pdfs

I am trying to combine a set of files into one pdf document. Each pdf file was created from Microsoft word and they all display perfectly as single files.
However when I combine all the pdfs into one document a lot of the text becomes corrupted and displays as square boxes instead of the correct characters.
    Can anybody help please?
    Thanks
    Steve

I am not sure Preflight is part of Standard. If it is, you will find it under the Advanced menu. However, it appears that the embed fonts is not one of the profiles for AA8. AA9 has an embed fonts profile. If you have all of the original files available, the fastest approach might be to go back to the original files and recreate the PDFs, selecting the Press or Print job options. For combining, you may have to change the job options to not embed subsets. Sometimes the use of subsets causes problems when combining. Before you waste time on a whole set of files, I would suggest you play with 1 or 2 to see if things work out. I hope this process resolves your issues. Basically, all I am suggesting is what I would try to make it work. You can also use ctrl-D in Acrobat to get the document properties and check the font embedding under the font tab. If it does not say embedded, then it is not embedded.

  • Corrupted characters when importing PDFS to combined PDF

When I import PDFS they are showing up in the combined PDF with corrupted characters. What's up?

You probably nailed it on the head.  The fonts in the separate PDFs have issues already.  So when you attempt to combine them Acrobat tries to save and ... Voila!  Garbage characters.  You might be able to test this by exporting the separate PDF files to MS Word documents.  My guess is that you will get garbage characters on the same pages as you would when you combined the PDF files.

  • Corrupt File issue - Mainly PDF

Has anyone encountered issues downloading PDFs from their site?
We are having several issues, particularly with PDF files where they open fine from the local computer, but after posting to the site, you get a corrupt file message when you try to open it.
I am not sure if this is a PDF issue, a Portal issue, an IE issue or what. Wondering if anyone else has experienced it.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Mary,
Thank you for the advice. We have run into that frequently with files on the Portal, but that is not the case with these PDFs.
We are now going to try and put a sniffer on the whole process and see if there are any packets being dropped along the way. That is the only way we can make sense of the issue, since a file will work for one person but not another.
We've synched browsers, Adobe version etc... as well.

  • Graphic Frames Corrupted When Exporting to PDF

I'm trying to figure out what is happening to random graphic frames in my InDesign document.  I'm working in a 68 page document.  I exported to PDF using the lo-res no bleed setting.  The PDF exported fine but when I went back to my InDesign doc, some of my graphic frames had changed to blank white frames.  The links still appeared on the links panel but it showed them as on the pasteboard.  When I clicked the PB link to view the object, it zoomed in to a tiny object in the gutter of the spread.  When I tried to enlarge the object, I got an error saying the object would leave the pasteboard.  I then looked in the control panel and all the coordinates and measuremends said NaN.  I'm working with InDesign CS 5.5 version 7.5.3 on OS X Lion version 10.7.3.  The frames contained either placed PSD files or placed PDF files.  It seems to have affected random frames on various pages.  I've spent 3 hours searching Google and these forums but haven't found a similar post.  This is a brand new system that has been in production for less than two weeks.  I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Jack

I stupidly started trying to figure out what was going on rather than immediately doing a save as and within about 3 minutes InDesign crashed. When I relaunched and reopened my document, not only were my graphic frames still messed up but all of the content on about 5 other pages were completely gone, frames and all. This is the weirdest thing that I've ever seen in InDesign. I understand the concept of NaN. I just mentioned it because it seemed like part of the problem. Thanks for your reply.  What makes this even more interesting is that this isn't the first time that I've seen this. About 6 months ago, I saw the same issue happen to another user on another machine. At that time we couldn't really track down any details because the document was last accessed at the end of the day on a Friday and we didn't figure it out until Monday morning. The only thing that the two workstations have in common is that the documents and resources were stored on the same server. Could it be an issue with using InDesign files stored remotely vs locally?

  • File location and address corrupted, can not open pdf, any way to fix this?

What is the easiest way to correct the file location and address  in a windows file system?

  • Clearscan Errors in Preview and other pdf viewers

I scan a lot of documents and have started using the ClearScan OCR option.  This produces very good quality scans and very small file sizes, but I've been running into problems when I try to read my pdfs in Preview or other pdf readers.  If I open a ClearScanned pdf in Preview and try to copy and paste some of the text, it pastes just fine.  If I save the pdf in Preview, however, and then try to copy and paste text, the result is something like this: "␣␣␣␣␣ ␣␣␣".  The PDF still looks fine, it doesn't change its visual appearance, but the OCR is no longer correct. This is a big problem because I use several other pdf readers to read and annotate my PDFs, and any time I save a ClearScanned PDF I lose the functionality of scanned text (since I can no longer copy and paste or even search the PDF since all the letters have been replaced with "␣").  Has anyone else had any problems with ClearScan?  Is ClearScan only compatible with Adobe, or is there any way to save a ClearScanned PDF so that it will work correctly with other PDF viewers?   Thank you!

I have not tried it, but I've seen posted in another thread that one of the Preflight options in AA9 allows you to embedd the fonts created by the ClearScan process. This might fix your problem. You just have to figure out how to use Preflight!
I just tried this - it's the "Embed fonts" option under the PDF fixups category. I can't tell if it will do what you need though, as I don't use Preview or any other PDF viewer. It did seem to embed fonts that were previously not embedded, though (a) they still didn't show up in the PDF Optimizer dialog, only in the document properties dialog, and (b) it seems like the ClearScan were embedded in the first place, even before I ran this Preflight.

  • APEX on Oracle XE PDF printing produces: Format error: not a PDF or corrupted.

Dear fellow Apexers and Oracle Gurus,
    I have the following configuration:
    Oracle XE 11gR2
    APEX 4.2.3.00.08
    Listener 2.0.5
On this setup I can create workspaces and applications as I please.
Now I want to print a PDF report.
I have set up PDF printing to "Oracle Listener" in the "manage Instance" settings in the instance administration.
I have created a classical report on the EMPLOYEES table (Select * from EMPLOYEES)
and enabled PDF printing in the "Printing" area of the "Print Attributes" of the page.
When I run the page I do get the "print" link on the bottom of the page.
Clicking the link does produce a .PDF but showing this file triggers an error in my PDF reader: Format error: not a PDF or corrupted.
Opening the .PDF file in a text editor reveals the corrupt content.
    %PDF-1.4

    Unknown function: gatherContextInfo
The same setup works fine and produces the expected PDF file with the report on the following configuration:
    Oracle Vbox with Developer days image;
    DB 11gR2
    Upgraded to apex 4.2.3.00.08
    Listener 2.0.5
Since the PDF shows "unknown function" I suspected the XE configuration to lack some of the necessary rights, maybe I forgot to configure the ACLs correctly.
So I compared the ACL info on both configurations. Alas,.. on both machines they return the same result..
    SQL> SELECT * FROM DBA_NETWORK_ACLS
    HOST         LOWER_PORT    UPPER_PORT    ACL
    localhost    null          null           /sys/acls/local-access-users.xml
    *            null          null           /sys/acls/power_users.xml
    SQL> select * from dba_network_acl_privileges
    ACL                                  PRINCIPAL      PRIVILEGE   IS_GRANT    INVERT
    /sys/acls/local-access-users.xml     APEX_040200    connect     true        false
    /sys/acls/power_users.xml            APEX_040200    connect     true        false
Anyone any idea why this works fine on the Vbox and not on the local XE configuration?
Any hint or answer as to where the problem might be is appreciated
    TIA
    Wouter

I'm having the same issue. I'm using Oracle XE 11gR2 as well. I've tried with APEX 4.2.2 and APEX 4.2.4. I have set up the Oracle Listener in instance settings and set the report to print and I have the same result as you. Have you had any progress yet?
    Thanks
    Jason
