Corrupted permissions... again?

First, an open letter to Apple:
Dear (cr)Apple,
Your own support technicians have acknowledged that there is a serious bug in Lion Server that causes permissions to become corrupted, which has been present since the initial release of 10.7. Despite doing my due diligence in applying updates as they are released, this problem still strikes randomly and without warning, bringing our company's production to a halt every time. Per your own technicians admission there is currently no way to prevent the corruption from happening, making our server little more than a ticking timebomb with an unpredictable fuse. The best any of your staff have been able to offer is advising me to reset all permissions on all files and directories back to default, remove all shares, and delete all users and groups, then reboot and set them all back up. This is downright absurd! As if that wasn't bad enough, this "fix" only works part of the time. When it doesn't work, your staff advises me to wipe the server completely and start over from scratch. Seriously?
I suppose you can't expect much more than that when you pay $50 for a "server". Any idea when you are going to get your proverbial poop together and fix your critically flawed product?
And now a few questions for the Support Community:
So has anyone managed to find a workaround for Apple's auto-corrupt "feature" they've added to file system permissions and sharing?
What about the part where you have to add a user/group two-to-ten times before it will finally stick in the Sharing & Permissions list? And the part where when it finally does stick, you have to change the Privilege to what you want another two-to-ten times before that will finally stick?
I'm almost afraid to ask, but is there a way to get Server.app > Storage and Finder > (shared item) > Get Info > Sharing & Permissions to agree so I don't have to set them both up separately, twice, to keep from immediately getting corrupted permissions?
Of course, I could always use terminal, but then I could have just bought a PC and installled Ubuntu Server...
The Backstory (for those who feel like an amusing read):
Originally, I had our shiny new Lion Mini server set up as an Open Directory box to manage our users and groups as well as our various file shares. This resulted in the above summarized problem occurring within a matter of hours. After quite literally days spent on the phone with Apple Support, and involvement by several different technicians and supervisors, the consensus was that I needed to format the drive and re-install from scratch. At the time I didn't think much of it since it was a brand new Mini server with a brand new OS (we were one of the first to try out Lion Server), and I hadn't done too much work getting it set up yet -- so I followed the advise and all appeared well... for about a day.
Then it happened again. More hours, technicians, supervisors and another format/reinstall went by, this time with the added advice that I forgo our plans to have an Open Directory server and just use the built-in users/groups. Since we're a smallish company, I again acquiesced and (re)built the server, from scratch, again, following Apple Support's recommendation to the letter. This appeared to work great, so over the course of several months we slowly moved terabytes of data from all of our workstations onto the server and began enjoying the extra productivity having a central repository afforded us.
Naturally, it happened again right after I finally got everything set up (files and shares that is, I had lost interest in iCal, iChat and AB server by this time). Fortuantely I was already running backups so it was a quick (hours instead of days) matter to rebuild the server, again.
Thank goodness they didn't screw up Time Machine.
So here I am again with a growing list of users that can't do their jobs because they can't open their files and/or can't save their files. This has all worked fine for about a month, and nothing has changed during that time. The server just decided on it's own that it will ignore all the permissions that have been laid down.
I suppose, in truth, real Lions do indeed act this way in the wild...

Hi all,
It turned out that my mail server didn't work the way it should, corrupted files, etc -- all because I tried too many options to fix what essentially wasn't even broken, I just had to fix DNS.
Running a 10.7.2 combo update didn't fix anything for me, nor did fixing permissions through Disk Utility.
DNS should be set the correct way both internally (local network), and if you have it, with a domain name hosting provider. If Lion Server can not find a DNS server on the same subnet as the lion server installation, it sets up the DNS service on Lion Server at install-time
If you want to be reachable from the outside, make sure the router has all corresponding ports open (port forwarding) at your router and that your external DNS is ok (at Godaddy for example). Set one A-record (e.g. server.example.com) and CNAME records for all others (e.g. mail.example.com) if you want to point them to the same machine.
Ports that need to be open for a service to work:
http://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/10.7/#apdCA9A73CE-5F0C-4BDC-93E8-2 952C362FA3E
MAKE BACKUPS OF ALL IMPORTANT DATA BEFORE PROCEEDING
After doing all this work, I rebooted and held the alt-key while booting physically on the server (I hooked it up on a monitor, keyboard and mouse), after which I could choose the Recovery partition to boot from. Within recovery I chose Disk Utility, selected the partition, clicked the erase tab and erased the partition.
Then I quit Disk Utility, came back to the previous screen, there I chose to re-install Lion. Since this is a Mac Mini Server (as purchased from the Online Store) it bypasses the App Store completely and just reinstalls Lion Server.
Because my DNS is now in a far better condition than it was before (I dare not say that it is good just yet ) installing Lion also configured all services in the correct manner.
From being in the verge of quiting on Lion Server, to the best feeling in the world because everything now works all thanks to a solid DNS, I didn't think that DNS would be such a big issue
Hope this helps!

What you are seeing are messages. It's ok.. it won't do any good to repeatedly repair permissions. As long as you see Repair Permissions Complete when it's finished, you are good to go.
Also, if you see any messages that say: SUID: That can be ignored.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I have seen previous versions mentioned in a pop up message before on iCloud.com, but I'm not really sure at all how it would help, as I couldn't get it to do anything.
The best advice I have at this time is to back up your work on your iOS device by regularly saving it to iTunes, if anything goes wrong you can then either load it into the numbers app again on the device or recover it via iTunes on your computer.
My syncs are immediate, I never get chance to see if it works in the background, sorry.

  • Shared folder permissions (again)

    Previous topic -> http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2745102&tstart=0
    So that went okay.
However, I noticed that the iTunes in the Shared folder had moved everything into /iTunes/iTunes media/Artist/ folders.
New files go directly there also.Tried to Organize library and it would go through the motions but would not actually do anything
In my user folder /Library/Preferences/, I found a bunch of temp files for com.apple.iTunes.plist.
Deleted those and it simply create new ones.
Shared/iTunes/ folder shows me as Read/Write and everyone else as *Read Only*.
Looking again and I was not able to change any filenames.
I booted from a SD! backup and repaired permissions on this drive but no help.

    This is /Users/Shared/iTunes.

  • File permissions -AGAIN

Sorry to raise this issue yet again.
    I am using Mavericks 10.9.1.
Permissions are still a damned mess.
I have now experienced this problem from Leopard onwards.   Never any realible answers.  This is a problem the Apple consistently ignores.
    Example:
All my files are kept on a NAS - setup properly with permissions setup correctly.
I create a file on my iMac (for this example - a keynote file) - I save this to my NAS - fine so far.  5 mins later I try to save my edits to the NAS. Now I don't have the correct permissions - checking the drive, folder and specific files shows me I have 'custom access' again.  Ridiculous - my NAS, my Mac - no-one else uses it.
I am sick and tired of this damned issue that wastes enormous amounts of users time.  The user should not be required - to constantly repair permissions (usually doesn't  work)  or enter arcane code into the  Terminal just to get the OS to work properly.
This is meant to be the 'most advanced OS' - really?
Sorry for the rant - but this is intolerable.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • 10.3.9 Server Corrupt Permissions

Deleted user Cache folders, ran security update 2006-002 on 10.3.9 server. The next day users (students) could not open AW, IE or saved documents. Checked permissions in WGM and the owner of every user in the Users folder had reverted back to 'root', group = 'admin'. Manually changed owner back to the student with r/w privileges, copied to enclosed folders. I even went back to the Users folder on the hard drive, did a Get Info, checked privileges and clicked Apply to Enclosed Folders. Tested the user--they get as far as AW opening but their previously saved document do not open--just the AW menu bar. Tried File, Open, nothing. IE doesn't open either. If I copy their document folder, delete the user in WGM, recreate, login as the user on a client machine to create the folder, log out, put document folder back in their newly created user folder, everything works fine. I have 1048 students on this server. I've ran 'fix disk permissions' several times. I don't want to go through each users folder, pull their doc folder out, delete user, recreate user, login as them on client machine, log out and put document folder back in user folder. HELP!! Does anyone have suggestions for an easier way? Or what may have happened??

I did this exact thing. Corrupted imapd.conf. Corrected by restoring imapd.conf.default (or whatever it's called) via cp imapd.conf.default imapd.conf. Then I had no users. Was told to rebuild the cyrus database.
Although I was running the 10.3.9 server, I was directed to kb article #107996. I followed those steps, saw no errors during the rebuild process and all the users reappeared with their mail.
I note that kb article #301694 simplifies the process for Server 10.3.9 - don't know if that works or not as I did the process for Server 10.3 - 10.3.8 on the direction of an Apple Care specialist.

  • AAA Different Permissions again

In a previous post I asked how I could assign RO permissions when a user connects to a firewall, but RW access when they connect to a switch, I was given a Cisco Kb to follow but this only allows the user to be in a RO or RW group.. I need the same user "Joe Blogs" RO access for one device and RW for another.

This can be done by creating two NDG's and map them with respective command authorization set under the same user account.
    Creating NDG's
NDG1 for ASA ---add ASA as a aaa client
NDG2 for switch---add switch as aaa client.
    Creating command authorization set
Create two different command authorization set under shared profile component for
    Switch = permit all
    ASA = Deny all
    and permit show only
Now, under the user account you need to map the NDG with appropriate command authorization set. When user tries to login to switch/ASA it will check the authorization set mapped with their NDG's

  • Repairing permissions again

I'm having trouble repairing permissions with disk utility. It's these permissions that won't seem to repair if you have any suggestions I would appreciate them.
    Thank you, Jack.

Unless you are having problems with your Mac, there is no reason to repair permissions repeatedly. You can ignore the messages, nothing to be concerned about. Repairing permissions is used for troubleshooting.

  • Permissions - again!

I use Foldershare as a form of backup and sharing files between machines. Since I reinstalled OS X due to permissions problems I have had issues with synchronising. I get the message that I do not have permission to read or write a file to Trash.
This seems to be connected to file permissions on the data files that I copied back to the Mac post OS X reinstall.
If I go through each file that FS raises as an issue and allow "everyone" to read and write the file is ok, otherwise no go. Similarly I cannot move or delete a file without using my password. Looking endlessly through the Support topics it seems my new ID no longer owns the files - hence needing the password etc.
I have tried the various Terminal commands I have found on topics but still have no success at globally resetting permissions.
Can anyone point me to a command or source of information.
Hope this makes sense and thanks to all those are so helpful in this place.

I did that and got a long list of files "not permitted" - examples are:
chown: /Users/JvG/Hill Top/Alice/PSP9/Xerces.dll: Operation not permitted
chown: /Users/JvG/Hill Top/Innovate/Novar/generic logistics contract (novar).doc: Operation not permitted

chown: /Users/JvG/Hill Top/Thesis/Why Automate Cleco.doc: Operation not permitted
chown: /Users/JvG/Hill Top/Thesis: Operation not permitted
It is only on these directories, Hill Top is my main location for data - should this happen?

  • Leopard Disc Permissions Corrupted, Won't Repair

    1. TechTool support recommend that I check disc permissions to solve a login issue. Found that aprox. 100 were corrupted and would not repair. Here is one example: Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreAUC.framework/ Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- . All the aprox. 100 corrupted permissions have the same "should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- " issue.
    2. I did archive and install OSX, the machine hung after accepting log in. I then installed 0SX and brought my data over from TM. I then verified permissions and they were good.
    3. I next installed updates, checked permissions again. This revealed that an update or updates seem to be corrupting permissions. They again would not accept repair. What can I do to address this? The machine seems to be working fine now but am concerned that system may be at risk. Please help. Tony

We are all getting those messages from Repair Permissions that say "Permissions differ..." and end with: "-rw-r--r--, they are lrw-r--r--" or something similar, the last set of letters beginning with an "l" which means it's a symbolic link, but is probably only meaningful to programmers.
They are not errors or warnings and as Apple says in the Knowledge Base article Lyssa pointed to, they can be safely ignored.

  • IPhoto Photos Corrupted... AGAIN

I have a roll of pictures that I imported before. Some of the pictures in the roll became corrupted, and iPhoto AND Preview could not open/load the pictures. However, in the pictures folder in Finder, there was one version of the corrupted pictures and another of the same picture that was still good and viewable (2 picture files for the same photo: one good one bad). iPhoto seemed to load the corrupted version of some of the pictures in the roll. Copying the "good" photos into another folder on the desktop and importing those into iPhoto did the trick of fixing the problem (would not import directly from pictures folder).
Now, however, the pictures are corrupted once again, and there isn't even a "good" one to import.
I have used PhotoPresenter: Version 3 DEMO, and I don't know if that is causing the problem. How can I fix this problem and is the cause of these corruptions PhotoPresenter?
    Thank you!

Thankfully, my backup disk had the uncorrupted photos. I guess I'll start backing up more often (or use Time Machine).

    Hello.
I have downloaded a few widgets, upgraded to firefox 2.0.0.1 and after veifying permissions and repairing them, after i restarting and cheking again, they keep appearing as if i never repaired them.
    Is this normal?
This is what keeps appearing after turning the computer on and verifying the permissions again.
I also noticed a slower startup... WHAT CAN I DO TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM??

I have read the thread and it's a relief that all the permissions change because of intego startup applications. So meanwhile, the computer startup time is slower until apple correct the issue through a patch in apple's utility disc right? Or how may i correct slow startup problem? I only have "antispam engine" and "AdobeResourceSynchronizer" apps at start up.

  • Repository corrupt (again...)

    Hi,
We have a corrupt repository (again). It is the third time in 2 years. Last time we coould migrate our production to development repository, but now it seems that the corruption already exists in production.
Our production repository still works correct (so we can still pub/sub messages), until we add new, or change existing objects.
We are now building a new repository from scratch out of the scripts (DTD's etc) in a newly installed hub-database.
Anybody outthere who experienced the same? How did you solve it? Do you know what can cause these corruptions?

The istudio tool doesn't update the USECOUNT column correctly, in some circumstances.
If you are looking at Application View objects then you need to look at DSO and DSOATTR tables.
    The USECOUNT is on DSO.
If you delete a publish event from an application then it will decrease the USECOUNT by 1. Sometimes this delete does not delete all the coresponding objects especially if other obects use this type and you need to tidy up. It is crap and has been an issue for years...unfortuanaltely.
Best thing to do is check the DSO table, then check if there is a corresponding record in the DSOATTR (joining PARENTID and also TYPEREF), if there is not then usually you can reset the usecount to 1 and then delete it from iStudio.
Make sure you run a repo backup each time you tinker with the repository especially if you haven't done it before.
Another option is to raise a TAR and send them your repo and ask them to sort it out.
The simpliest option is to always delete the publish event and all corresponding application datatypes each time, then reload the project and start again.
    Stuart.
