Corrupted sound files

Instrument sound files on my 3rd party stand-alone audio apps (particularly Native Instument apps like Kontakt and Bandstand) become corrupted and distorted after a couple of uses for some reason>
I can restart, or sometimes just go to system Sound Preferences and reset the sound volume from there. These solutions will sometimes fix the sound corruption for awhile, but it returns quickly.
Any opinions on why this might be happening?
Thanks, Bill

I can't find a consistent answer. Some suggest a latency issue, but that does not seem to be it. Restarting the app will sometimes, although not always, return the sounds to normal (i.e. undistorted). then the problem returns... it has me perplexed.

I have a computer 3 months old and the window sound files are corrupted.  When I move the slider in the volumn control I get a pinging, twanging sound.  It started about 3/4 weeks ago.
I've made not changes, just one morning I turned on PC and that is what was happening.

    Hi
You have a couple of options as I see it.
Please First check if the speaker icon on the unit is not muted.
Go to Device manager and uninstall the driver and restart and unit will install the driver automatically.
Try doing System restore to the date when the unit was working fine.
Try to update the driver from hp.com website.

  • Corrupted Master File Table on External Hard-Drive(NTFS)

You could try some data recover software, it should be able to copy the data off for you (as long as there are no physical problems with the HD). Recuva is free, Rstudio is also very good. You will need to have enough space available on another drive to restore the data to.
Best of luck with it! :)

First off I want to apologize if I sound inexperienced, this is my first time posting on Spiceworks and I have only been in IT for a year as an intern. So here is my problem, I have an external hard-drive that I use as a secondary drive for storage. The other day I went to get something off it when I noticed that I could not access the drive through file explorer. It came up with an error saying "Data error (cycle redundancy check).".
I proceeded to google the problem since I have not seen the error before and found many forums telling me to run a check disk on the drive with /f to fix the errors on the disk. I run the chkdsk and I get the following error"Corrupt master file table. Windows will attempt to recover master file table from disk. Windows cannot recover master file table. CHKDSK aborted".

  • Corrupt wav files in Adobe but play fine in other apps

I have some old projects that have been backed up several times.  The problem is some of the sound files appear corrupt when I load them into Adobe Audition.  The sound plays all distorted with VERY LOUD clicks/pops in it.  However, I can play the same files just fine in any standard media player (Winamp, WMP, VLC player)
I tried opening the project in the new Audition but same thing happens.  I've also tried the "Open As" option and specifying what windows reports as it's sample rate etc but it comes out the same.  Most of the other wav files in the projects work just fine, but one here and there is like this and is preventing me from remixing anything.  Worst case scenario I suppose I could play the file in winamp and record it but then I'd have to match the timing up and everything and I just don't have the motivation to do that on all these projects.
    http://home.comcast.net/~chicken3/Track17.zip
This is one of the files if somebody wants to take a moment and look at it.  I just don't understand why winamp and all of them can play it fine if it was corrupt in any way, other than VLC which I know doesn't need file headers to play properly most of the time.
Below is a pic of what the wave looks like in Audition.  Oh, and Reaper reads the files just fine as well, if I hadn't trimmed all my wav files down i'd just paste the whole project into Reaper and remix but unfortunately I trimmed all the files already.

Well as I said it plays in standard media players such as Winamp (which generally will not play a file with a corrupt header or any sort of problem like that)  However I checked it out in that app you mentioned and the results seem normal to me.  I've tried Open As in Audition and I can choose the 44.1KHz and 32 bits but it opens the same as it did before.  So far I've only noticed 32 bit files with this problem but it's possible it has nothing to do with that.  Again, the file plays fine in all standard players, and Reaper and other audio apps open it just fine.  Audition will not.

  • Resurrecting split sound files

This question has been answered in various forms, but I need a little additional information.
It has been asked previously how to restore files that have been split into data and resource forks. I have been able to restore Word documents and older QT Moov files by simply changing the extension on the data file.
Since I couldn't get AppleTalk to communicate over Ethernet between OS9 and OS 10.3, I copied the info off my old PowerMac using a Zip drive, copied it to a PC, and loaded it on the thumb drive to transfer to the iBook. I know, I know, two steps more than I needed.
I have been able to re-combine data and resource forks for .wav, .snd, and .au files by simply copying both forks to a thumb drive, at which point I was able to copy the merged file back to my hard drive.
But once I copy them back, I can't find a sound format that will play, .au and .snd files won't play through Quicktime, .wav files won't play through iTunes. Any idea how to resurrect these files?
I've tried to follow the RsyncX procedures, no luck. If there's a step-by-step procedure out there to bring sound files back together and get them to play, if someone could post a link, that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thank you!
I was able to use Audacity's "Import raw data" to bring them back to life.
A couple are indeed corrupted, not much I can do about those.
I tried opening the snd and wav files directly through Audacity, and the program automatically suggested the "import raw data" command. It took a couple tries for each to get the correct sampling rates, but the process really isn't that difficult.
    The help is much appreciated!

  • How to play downloaded sound files?

I 'save as' sound files from a nature recordist's group - usually mp3s- but I cant play them.
Help? I know this is the place.
    Thanks

As Duane says, iTunes should play MP3. If you have downloaded to, say, the desktop, iTunes will not automatically play it. But if you double click it, iTunes should automatically open and import the song as long as iTunes has been set as your default player. If that doesn't work, occasionally you need to drag & drop the file into an open iTunes window. If that doesn't work the file is corrupt or isn't MP3 even if the download says it is.
    Have fun!

  • Can't open Safari - but can hear sound files when a link is selected

I can't open Safari from either the desktop icon or through Finder. However, when I click on a web link, through an email I can hear the sound file.
I have another Mac that can still access the internet (i.e what I'm on now) They are networked.
How can I fix this? In the meantime could I put up another web browser to use? How do I do this though?

Safari's preference file may be corrupt. In the Finder, drag to the desktop the com.apple.safari.plist folder found in your User Account>Library>Preferences folder.
Restart Safari. If this works, you'll need to reset your custom preferences, plus any custom settings in the Edit (spelling) or View (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons etc.) menus.
Otherwise, move the file back to its original location. The alternative would be to try Safari from another User Account. Here is guidance from Apple on how to set up the account. You can ignore step 7 in the article.
Also, on the system preference>Accounts panel, click on "log-in" options. There, select "fast user switching". This allows you to go back and forth between user accounts via an icon in your Menu Bar at the top of the computer screen.
Log-on to the new account and start Safari. If the sites are accessible in the new account, then your problem is specific to your regular user account. Otherwise, similar response means a system-wide problem.
    Post back with results.

  • 8 bit / corrupted audio files on re-opening a song

"8-bit" Corrupted Audio Files On Reload?
    Posted: Aug 18, 2005 10:45 AM
A day after a recording session with my band the other night, I re-opened the song and recieved an error message "What kind of file is this?" and then another... something about the file being "8-bit" and unusable. This is the bass track from a very good session with my band and I'd like to try and recover it. Does anyone know how this happened, how to recover the file, and how to prevent it from happening in the future? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
More info: When opening the file in SoundHack, it says that it is a "Headerless" file. Setting the header to 24 bit linear and saving a copy results in an extremely distorted and unusable file, but you can kind of hear the recording in the background... sped up.

Hello and thanks to all for your replies. Oh and I did in fact copy somebody else's post. Sorry for the confusion.
I had a backup of the song on another disk with which I continued with my mixing. I am not worried about that particular song now. I am just worried that this might happen again.
About my sound/sample library, I just deleted the folders which had corrupted files and copied back from my backup disks.
Dropping corrupted file in a new .lso doesn't work. Haven't tried moving preferences yet but will do. I didn't have a mac before I bought an intel mac.
Can someone explain why this happened in the newest version when this was supposed to have been resolved in an earlier version? Isn't the latest version a cumulative one?
There's one other thing that also happened with me this week. I think it's related:
I had a Logic project open which was set at 96/24 and I had some audio done in it. I tried to open Reason rewired to Logic because I wanted a drum beat from Dr.Rex. Reason was set at 44/16. I tried to open some of the samples from my sound library. The files played just fine but later on when I checked, the folders which I went into looking for that drum beat got corrupted. In fact, it corrupted everything under root folder. It shouldn't have touched my samples at all, right? Why should this happen when I'm trying to just read samples or files?

  • Corrupt audio file prevents me from opening Logic project file

    Hello,
I've been running Logic 8 for a couple years off my MacBook and have never encountered any significant problems of file corruption until recently.
The issue I encountered is this:
I've been producing a lengthy track in an on-going Logic project file for some time and after completing a recording session I saved and started deleting excess track copies to clean up my arrange window. Upon doing so Logic unexpectedly crashed.
After attempting to reopen the project file, it started its normal process of loading its respective audio files, but now it hangs on one particular audio file indefinitely (I'll refer to it as 'audio file x' for ease of reference), freezing and crashing Logic as a result. All of this project file's auto backup files are also incapable of being opened without giving me the same result and crashing Logic.
I have no way of opening this project file and getting at my most recent saved sequence!
I've tried removing this corrupt 'audio file x' from the project's audio folder and dragging it to the desktop, but this had no effect and I still can't open any recent version of the project file.
Older saved copies of the current project file do still open though (most likely because they were saved prior to the corruption caused by this suspect 'audio file x.') When opening an earlier iteration of the project, I get a message '1 invalid audio region found' (I assume referring to the corrupt suspect 'audio file x' that I removed to the desktop) but the project file is still able to open.
I realize I could import the audio files from the most recent version of the crashed file to an older project version and reconstruct things back to the way they were, but it would take me a lot of time and I'm hoping there may be some way to recover the un-openable project file by getting it to stop looking for this corrupted 'audio file x' on startup.
When I click 'show package contents' of the Logic Project file, I notice two items labeled 'displayState' and 'documentData.' From my troubleshooting I've come to the basic understanding that the 'documentData' file contains all the sequence data and settings for its respective Logic Project file.
I think the 'document data' of the unopenable project file in question may be corrupt because whenever I replace it with the 'document data' from an earlier Project file version, the file is able to open. This doesn't do me much good though, because it's document data from an earlier iteration of the project and I need to be able to get at the current sequence I had right before my file crashed.
Is there anyway to open a project file without letting it load its audio files? Or is there anyway I could get inside the 'document data' file to delete the reference/pathway in its audio bin to the corrupt 'audio file x' its hanging on?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping there's some way I won't have to repeat a couple days worth of work. Thanks for your help!

After further troubleshooting I've realized that the suspicious audio file that prevents the project file from opening is actually not corrupted itself. I can still play the audio file in other media software like Quicktime, etc. with no problem.
This leads me to believe the problem opening the project file lies solely with the corrupted 'documentData' file.
Does anyone have any ideas about how I could somehow open this project file and delete the reference of the troublesome audio file from the project's audio bin?
Well... it really sounds like the project itself is corrupted, that's one of the reasons all project files won't load from a certain point on.
    Try this.
    Reboot the Mac.
Open the Applications folder and boot Logic from it's icon.
As soon as the Logic Logo/graphic window appears on the screen hold down the control key. You will see a message pop up that says something like "Launch the Core Audio Driver" there will be yes/no choice available... select NO.
Go to the File menu and selct "open" go find your project file and see if it will open. If it does.. delete the audio file in question... however.. I would also look at any plugins you recently installed and are possibly using in this project...this sounds more like a plugin problem rather than an audio file problem, but that's just a gut feeling.
Anyway, if it opens delete whatever you suspect and save under a different name.
Reboot Logic and see if it can load the project.

  • Corrupt Song Files

Alright, so I've downloaded two songs from iTunes in the past month that have been corrupt. What's up with that? The songs download fine and then will cut off at certain points.
One was Switchfoot - Dare You to Move, which cut off at .37 seconds.
The second was Darling Violetta - Smaller God, which cut off with four seconds to spare and started off with such a messed up audio that it was almost painful to listen to.
If it happens once, I'm willing to forgive iTunes for the mistake, but twice? That bothers me.
Is something wrong with the version I'm using? My laptop?
Note: My laptop is new. I got it in August of 2011. It is a Windows Dell Vostro using Windows 7. I couldn't tell you much else.

have you tried just removing the sound files that arent being played on your ipod, then turn the ipod off, and back on again and try videos, a corrupt or incompatible track will generaly just skip past, but i see no reason why it would affect the video playback of sperate files

  • Corrupted Sound When Using IM Programs

I have a HP Pavilion DV5z-1000.  When I use IM programs (so far I have tried Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger), they seem to work fine for a while with both sound and video.  However, after a few minutes, the audio becomes "corrupted".  I hear a horrible rushing, static-like sound.  This will stop after a few minutes but then reoccur.  I have a broadband connection, so I don't think the problem comes from a slow connection.  Additionally, the corrupted sound does not sound like the typical broken or distorted sound you get from a slow connection.  Interestingly, the person on the other end can still hear me and does not hear any of this cacophony.
Any idea what may cause this?  I thought it might be Windows Live Messenger but then tried Yahoo and I get the same result.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the link but it doesn't really solve the problem.
I know it works in VLC, my problem is that I absolutely need to be able to use the clip(s) in iMovie HD because I'm filming a documentary and this is one of the most important interviews.
Even if it means finding a way to split the audio in some other program then importing the audio file I'd be ok with that, but I so far I haven't been able to figure it out...any other suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Corrupted music files not even the support can fix it

    Try to figure this out.
    1 - I had an iphone 3GS where i had music files.
    2 - I got an iphone 4
3 - I copied all the songs i had on my 3Gs to the 4
4 - They all work fine
5 - When i copy new songs on my 4 ALL of them are corrupted
6 - When i play them on my computer all of them ARE NOT corrupted
The 3GS has gone i can't test on it.
Now, why old songs works fine on the iphone 4 but when i get new songs them are not working, but they do work fine on my computer? Hardware problems but the songs i had on my 3GS do work fine, if it was the hardwere them all should be corrupted, corrupted files but they all work fine on my computer, so they are not corrupted, transfering files from the computer to the iphone but then why only the new ones are still corrupted, where is the problem? i don't get this fixed i give up the iphones and move to android, i have enought or wasting money, the support has no idea how to fix it.Thanks.

  • How can I transfer a sound file from my "Voice Memos" app on my iPhone to my iPad?

How can I transfer a sound file from my "Voice Memos" app on my iPhone to my iPad?

In iTunes with your iPhone connected, click on the iPhone device, select the Apps tab, scroll down to the File Sharing section and pick an app that plays Quicktimes ("Files Connect" works in this example, but I'm open to suggestions of better apps for playing transferred Quicktimes) and drag your Quicktime from Finder to the Documents pane for the File Sharing app.   Once the file transfer is complete, go to the app on your iPhone to play the Quicktime.

  • Corrupt Dock File?

    Hi,
So on my dock, I have my Applications Folder on it to use as a shortcut, but just recently, it started to display two of every application. See my picture:
I also have my Downloads Folder on my Dock. When I drag things from the Downloads folder into the trash can, nothing happens. But then when I click +Show In Finder+, it shows the file as deleted.
So it seems my Dock is not refreshing or something? So what I did to fix it was just remove the Applications and Downloads Folders from the Dock, and drag the Applications and Downloads folder from my hard drive to the dock. But everytime I log back in or download something else, the problem will arise again.
Do I have a corrupt dock file? I didn't want to try messing with that until I consulted +Apple Discussions+ first.
    Thanks, Alex

if recreating those stacks doesn't help try resetting your dock preference file. delete the file /users/user/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and enter the following terminal command
    killall Dock
your dock will be rest to the default. see if the problem goes away.
