Corrupted System Files, No Longer Boots

Note: I am trying to fix my grandfather's computer, and I may not know some exact details about what happened just before the problems began occurring.
About a week ago, the computer would refuse to boot up. It would sit at the gray screen with the Apple logo without the loading dial showing. I booted off of the Tiger install disk, and ran the disk utility.
When I verified the disk permissions, it gave the error, "Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I get the same error message when I try to repair the disk permissions.
When I choose verify disk, I receive the error message, "First Aid failed: Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Below in red, it says, "Invalid Key length
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair"
If I tell it to repair the disk, I get the error message, "First Aid failed: Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Below in red, it says, "Invalid Key length
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error."
Is there anything I can do to save the computer?

  • System file deletion to boot in Lion?

What I would like to know is what system file can I delete from the system when booted from another partition so I can boot up in Lion.
Lion locked up when I had ten applications open with a multiple windows and I had to do a HARD SHUT DOWN.
Now every time i try to boot into Lion it tries to reopen all the apps and windows and locks up again.
There must be an "com.apple." file that has this information in it.
I'm now booting from my Snow Leopard partition and need to fix Lion from here.

  • Widget System crash -- no longer booting

About a week ago I used Disk Utility and Disk Warrior to clean up my Powerbook G4 (standard stuff), and everything has been working fine.
But today I was looking at my weather widget when I got a system error. If you're in the widgets when you get an error, the screen freezes waiting for input. I couldn't get out of the widgets so I couldn't click the system error dialog box to dismiss it. I couldn't even escape/crash out of the widgets and finally had to do a hard shut down (pressing on the power key).
Now my computer won't boot. I get a nice chime, but that blank grey apple logo screen and nothing. I got a similar screen about a month ago after installing the latest OS update, but once I just let it sit for awhile it corrected itself (I have no idea how or why). But that doesn't seeem to work now.
I can boot up fine off an external drive and see and use all my files. I can run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior but both give odd errors that basically the B-trees are destroyed and the system can't be booted or repaired. Disk Warrior can create a new system directory, but it can't save it to the damaged drive, so it's of no help.
Does anyone know of any other solutions rather than erasing the hard drive? I'd like to avoid that if possible.
    Thanks.
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Powerbook G4 15 inch w/ 1 gig RAM

Disk Warrior is good, if it can't repair the problem not much can be done.
if the files can be accessed when booted from external drive, you could try copying over user home folder from PowerBook to external drive, then "erase and install" OS.

  • Missing/corrupted system file in ..\system32\config and in ..\repair folder

    Hello everyone,
Could you please help me with this proble ? I have got Windows XP PRO SP3 OEM.
Today when I started pc i have got error meesage system file in Windows/system32/config missing. When I look into folder system file is here, but maybe he is broken. I said fine no problém I have got Windows/repair. I only need to copy default file to config
    folder.
    But..
When I wanted to copy system file from Windows/repair folder there is no system file only system.bak. So I copy this file into Windows/system32/config and rename it onto system. I tried reboot PC, I saw starting Windows logo I almost jump into air, but after
few seconds my smile disappear. I got automatic restart. I tried it again, again and again same. So I tried run pc in safe mode with same result.
On the internet I read its can be by oem version of system. But where can I get system file now. Its possible to take system file form another pc ? Thank you for your advice.

    Problem solved.
There is solution which help me, so maybe it can help to others.
Its better when you can unplug disk from pc and connect it to another via usb or via ata/sata such as another disk in the pc.
    1. At first at computer you need to see invisible files and protected files of operation system.
                          Computer > F10 > Tools > Folder options
    2. Now on the "corrupted disk" in the root you can see folder called "System volume infomation", but I think you dont have permission for it, right ?
Right click > Properties > Security > Add your self and add rights
-now you can open system volume information folder
    3. open _restore{hexa} folder. Now zou can see a lot of folders started RP<number>, try to open the folder with higher nubmer. Next open snapshot folder. Now you can see a lot of files. But we want
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE or _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM, choose what you need. Now copy file whant you need for example _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM and rename it for SYSTEM.
    4. Open this path Windows\system32\config and rename your corrupted file. For example "system" to system.bad
    5. Last copy your new "system" file from SYSTEM VOLUME FOLDER which you created in step 3 to Windows\system32\config folder.
    6. Plug your hdd back into your pc and start pc and hope all will be fine :) .
I hope this instruction will help someone, good day and smile :)

Thanks. I made a copy of the file, compressed it, and saved it to another location outside of the System Folder. Then I deleted the original. System seems to be running fine.
    I will re=install it.
Please do reinstall it. and do not ever delete system files like this one! this is the wrong way to deal with permissions error messages.

  • How do i retrieve file vault protected files from an external hard disk that used to be my mbp's hard drive? the hard disk got corrupted and will no longer boot. I put it in an enclosure and attempted to copy my files but failed because of FV encryption.

This external hard disk used to serve as the main drive of my mbp. It got corrupted and the OSX would no longer load. I upgraded to a 500gb hd and used the old hd as an external drive. I tried to copy my files but i could not access them because of the filevault encryption. 110gb of hd space appears as used which means that my files are still in the drive. Is there a way to retrieve these files? thanks

According to your post, you're using Leopard, so FileVault only encrypts your user folder (unlike Lion). On the mounted external drive, in your user folder, you should see a file called username.sparsebundle, with username being your user name. Double-click that file to open it and it should prompt you for a password. Type in your password and the file will mount as a volume in Finder. You should be able to copy all of your files over.

  • Mac OSX 10.4.8 Update Breaks Raid Striping -- System will no longer boot

    Hi,
I'm a newbie from the PC world with a Mac Pro. For the last 8 hours I've been trying to get a Raid-0 configuration to work with no success.
The Raid array constructs ok and the system boots. Once that's done the Software Update screen arrives and I would select install all... then the machine would not boot. I get a Grey Shade like affect and the message to power off and restart. Powering off does nothing.
So I started again for the Nth time and added each Software Update individually. All loaded and rebooted successfully until the 10.4.8 Update.
As soon as that loads, installs and restarts the machine will not boot.
I called Apple's Tech Support and they told me they do NOT support RAID on this machine. I said what are you talking about. They put me on hold talked to a supervisor and came back with the same story. I just don't get it...
So anyone have any insight and advice on why the update breaks my Raid-0? What can I do to get over the problem (I'd like to have the RAID...)?
    Thanks for the assistance.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, you needed an emergency boot drive anyway to repair your RAID boot drive. Just use the same one in addition to a working clone or backup of your regular system.
Apple made it easy to install or update security updates and system updates from an alternate drive (but you will have to use the stand-alone (combo preferably) updaters instead - which many use already as normal part of upgrades for years now (they seem more useful and reliable).
My preference is a dedicated boot drive with OS and apps and minimal home directory - no media files - and fast, like 10K Raptor. I use RAID for my home directory so it isn't on the boot drive for years to improve performance and keep the OS separate. Never a problem and nice mix.

  • I-Tunes update has corrupted system files

The latest version of i-tunes did not complete the installation process and now I am getting an error message "MSVCR80.dll missing from your computer" followed by "Error 7 (WindowsError 126). I cannot start i-Tunes. Tried to re-install but it will not complete the process. No i-Tunes or access to my library!

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

  • System file corruption-alternatives to erase&install?

To make a long story short(er) I restored from (SuperDuper) backup after the HD failed and Apple gave me a new one. Then problems occurred with the system being slow (hesitating a lot) and having trouble connecting via wireless and finally not connecting at all, and then the machine ended up in "limbo" (according to the Mac Genius.) Now I've been told to erase and install, but I'm reluctant... There's a years worth of tweaks, updates, and installs on my MacBook! (After all, that's why I was so fervent about backing up...) And Boot Camp too.*)
Evidently "some" corrupt system files made their way into my backup before the old drive failed. (There was no warning; one day it was just gone.)
My question is, is there a way to figure out/diagnose which system files are corrupt and to replace only those? Or, alternatively, is there a way to "erase and install" only the system? Please forgive my "lack of Mac," I come from many years with Windows.
*)I'm assuming I can use Winclone to restore Windows (if I really have to erase the drive) once I repartition using Boot Camp. Um, all I have to do is remember how big I made that partition...

I suggest that you start with an Archive and Install (checking the box to preserve settings). The last time I did this was in an upgrade from 10.2 to 10.3 on our little iMac G3, and after it finished, everything was just exactly the same as it had been under 10.2, except for one thing: those little pictures were gone by the users' names on the login screen (it was trivial to reconnect those pictures with the names). So I would try that, and see if your issues are fixed. If they are not, then there is another step you can take, which is to delete your preference files that are associated with the problem (i.e. wireless, airport). and if these things are not effective, then I would proceed with the full erase and install. I haven't done the Archive and Install with Tiger but I don't think it gives you a lot of options about what setting to save ... I think it's either all or none.
By the way, before doing any of these things, you should make at least one complete backup or clone of your entire disk.
Also, before doing Archive & Install or Erase & Install, create a new user and login as that user to see if the problem goes away. If it does, then there is not much point in doing a new system installation because the problem would have been pinpointed to your local user files/preferences, not the system-wide software.
I am not surprised that the Apple Genius suggested Erase/Install versus Archive/Install. The Erase/Install is guaranteed to fix any software issue, so the Genius won't need to deal with you in a follow up anymore. They have people lined up and want to just get you on your way, even though it might cause you a lot of work to recover all your settings and installed software (that's your time, not his). The Archive/Install is also highly likely to fix almost all software problems, but if it's something corrupted in your user settings, then it might not, in which case you'll be back and he'll have to deal with you. So he's suggesting killing a fly on a window with a sledgehammer, when maybe a flyswatter would work just as well (and cause less collateral damage to your house). I understand the motivations of a busy Apple Genius, but from your point of view, it would be better to try the other things before finally going to the erase and install.
Remember to do that backup before trying any of these things.
In general Macs do not need to have system software reinstalled. In fact I have never had to do it as a repair/diagnostic step on any of my machines using Mac OS X (except that one Archive and Install I did, but that was on a healthy system to go from 10.2 to 10.3).

  • X200 auto-update BIOS upgrade failed? system no longer boots

    Hi,
I've had an X200 for around 7 months now and just did an auto-update earlier today. One of the items was a BIOS update, so I thought what the heck, it should be fine, always has been before. The update completed correctly and shuw down for reboot as planned.
The system now no longer boots. Nothing at all happens. When I press the power button, no matter whether with AC supply or on battery, the following happens:
    - num lock, caps lock, HDD and 'power on' lights light up for a second or so then go off again
    - they come back on again for another second, and off again
    - then only the bluetooth light and the 'power on' light remain lit, and nothing else happens
It seems pretty fried to me. What can I do? I'm in severe despair! :'(
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Phil

    Hans;
Thank you for the reply.  Say hiya to Amelia for me.  Does this mean you're an alien?
Ok, I tried using bootable CD and no go.
I don't really have a simpler graphics card around to try that.  So that test may not happen.
I can try with one dimm when I get home (I'm at work atm.)
I also thought about putting the drive into another system and will try that also later today or tomorrow morning.
D-Bracket:  I will have to watch that again.  It really didn't make sense to me as the lights went through a lot of the steps then came to a halt at what I think was BIOS Sign on.  Someone did suggest to me that I might have a virus, which may be why the second hard drive failed eventually.  But I'm not sure about that and not sure what can be done about that unless clearing CMOS would take care of it.
    So, any new thoughts?

  • My Vista system crashed due to a corrupted windows file. When I reformatted C:/ & reloaded firefox & tbird, my bookmarks were gone. I have an image of the drive , but I don't know how to recover them and get the data back where I can access it.

Vista system crashed due to a corrupted system file. The C drive was reformatted, and windows reloaded, along with the rest of my programs.
Before the drive was reformatted, an image was made of it on a USB drive to save all the data. Now I need to know how to get the Bookmarks back for Firefox, and the Address Book back for Thunderbird.
    Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. It worked very well, for both Firefox and Tbird.
One hitch, until I remembered: those are all hidden files, in hidden folders. I had a devil of a time finding the "roaming" folder, until I found out how to unhide everything. In years past, I used DOS for that kind of thing. Explorer is much less user-friendly. Now that I know how to do it, it's simple.
    Thanks again for the guidance

  • Firefox 26.0 update corrupts windows system files

I updated firefox mid-December 2013 on a pc running Windows 7. Everything was fine until I shut down. Windows would not start. Safe mode would not start. We eventually found that there were corrupt system files. We fixed those, uninstalled the firefox update and everything was fine. At that time I was not certain firefox was the source of the problem because I had installed other updates and programs.
I just updated to firefox 26.0 (no other changes made), shut down, and couldn't launch windows. Uninstalled the update and fixing my sytem again.

  • How can I repair Vista system files with only a Toshiba recovery disc??

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that the reason I can't install Vista service pack 2 is due to some corrupt vista files. I ran the program that checks that system files and it said some are corrupt. There are some things I can't do, like turn on the Windows firewall even from that special adminostrar screen, or if I schedule a check disc scan, when I reschedule it for start up, it doesn't do it at startup. I had a Red Screen about a year ago, and it did a bunch of stuff and at the end, it said you had a major event and contact your administartor. Well, I am the administartor, lol. Anyway, it worked fine and I attribute these problems to that event.
Vista discs come with a repair option. All I have is the Toshiba disc that lets you reinstall the Toshiba and Vendor applications OR reformat the hard drive. I am not going to spend days trying to get my system back to where it is by tracking down everything I have installed especially when its working. Is there a work around? I will buy a Vista Home Premium disc if I have to before refortmatting. I have an x205-S9349 with Vista Home Premium. THANKS!
