Corruption  multiplying software

a complete restore (not from backup) of the iphone with "black patches" over parts of the camera roll appearing to be covering photos on the camera roll on the iphone multiplies the corruption.... The "black patches" have now occurred on my other iphones that i sync to the same mac iphoto library, appearing to import the corruption from iphoto right back onto the camera roll on each iphone ....
Sometimes the trash can on the iphone camera will accept a delete of a black patch... but, once the iphone is re-synced to iphoto, bizarre grouping of symbols in the area where the black patch was found on the iphone camera roll is now found in iphoto.. deleting these alien symbols from iphoto multiplies the photos... (one black patch delete grew the library from 3000 to 8000 photos...and each photo must then be deleted one by one so as not to delete the original)...
Other applications on my iphones are appearing to become infected with corruption...
Apple technical support is still trying to figure out what's happening... i have sent them photos of the weird symbols in iphoto and the black patches on iphoto camera roll corrupting and multiplying the library.....

Try the two fixes below in order as required:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
Resync with your iPhone after each fix.

I am trying to update to iTunes 10 to us my new iPad, but I can not remove a corrupted? "apple software update" program... I can get everything else off, but due to "previous version" of software update it will not continue.
I stopped in to see one of the genius at the local store who referred me to "Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable" (I am trying to install it on a Windows XP System)
The last version on iTunes on my PC was iTunes 7.
    Thanks for your help,

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • Hard drive corrupted, recovery software threw iPhoto info files everywhere

Ok, so my hard drive got corrupted, and I got some of the data off of it, but not all. I think there is a lot of iPhoto files scattered about the folders in a "Lost Folder(s)," which the recovery software decided to do. (I used Stellar Phoenix) I watched the process of recovery happen, and I also looked through all those Lost Folders and saw that there was a few things that may be related to iPhoto.
I would like to know what files to look for and how they are organized in the iPhoto Library package. I do not want to rebuild my entire library like I already have to do with iTunes, especially with Faces.

You don't have a choice. There is no way you can reconstruct the Library - database files, Data, Original and Modified versions in precisely the correct locations and so on - from the assembled bits.

  • Illustrator files corrupt, recovery software or methods?

I had a hard drive failure (I know, I need to pay more attention to my backups) and had a company recover the files. They are all corrupt. When I go to open any file, I get a text import window. Is there any good software or any companies that might be able to fix this? I've tried Recovery Toolbox for Illustrator and it's unable to help. I've also tried the "open it in Acrobat" solution, which doesn't work for me, either.
    Thank you,
    Steven

    Steven,
It may be something missing at the beginning (and maybe end) of each file.
    You may try this:
    1) Use the method here on a healthy (new empty) file to see how it begins (and maybe ends):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50031.html
    2) Open one or some of the corrupt files and see how they begin (and maybe end), as compared with 1), including whether the same part(s) is (are) missing.
    3) If applicable try to copy the missing part(s) from 1) and add it (them) to 2).
If this works, and if the same for each file, someone may be able to tell you how to do it for all the files without your having to open each.

  • Raw Files Corrupted or Software Issue?

Hi guys, first post here! I have been looking for info on this particular issue but can not quite find an aswer. So here is my issue...
I shoot on a Canon 60D, have so for 2+ years always in RAW and now using Photoshop CS6 with the latest raw plugin. I just shot some photos and am having major issues, see below. This is how all of my RAW files look. Blown out, pixelated and just all around awful.
When looking at them in camera, they look fine as well as the thumbnails when transferred to my computer. However when I open them up in Photoshop this is what I get. Also, if I convert the imges in camera from RAW to JPEG and then transfer them to my computer they are fine and look the way they should. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The difference of the reply #4 shot and the initial shot that has very strong blue coloring, appears to be the use of flash which brightens the foreground with daylight-balanced flash lighting and minimizes the overexposure of the colored lighting, so while you can see the various colors, they aren't overexposed, which leads to banding as the channels clip at different points on the way to white.  One issue with the reply #4 image, of the DJ, is that the blacks are not very black.
Back to the original topic:  the files do not appear to be corrupted, nor does there appear to be a software issue.  But the Adobe Camera Raw defaults don't look good for these pictures in extreme lighting.
I was able to extract the camera embedded previews for each shot using ExifToolGUI.  These are reduced-size but should show the toning and color processing the camera would apply to its own JPGs.  If these are not what you see for the JPGs from your camera then you might supply those as part of your shared dropbox folder.
I am using Lightroom 5.3 to do the comparisons which should duplicate the processing done by ACR 8.3, but it provides an easier to show side-by-sides as well as the processing applied in the last example.  I am using a Windows 7 64-bit computer with a standard-gamut monitor that is profiled but that profile is close to sRGB so I have not taken the time to convert my screenshots to sRGB since they will almost be the same either way:
A comparison between the camera processed raw files and the Adobe processed raw files shows us that the default Adobe processing is more saturated, more contrasty and with harsh color transitions as compared the camera jpg.  The Copy 1 is a virtual copy in Lightroom so I could reset it to default values and not touch the original user processing supplied in the XMP:
However, by merely changing the camera profile in the Camera Calibration section from Adobe Standard to Camera Standard we see almost the same rendering between Adobe and Canon, so if you're trying to start with the same place the camera rendering is, then just switch your camera profile to Camera Standard:
Now, the dropbox version of IMG_3277.CR2 came with an XMP file that has user settings that are much improved compared to the default rendering, and this includes quite a bit of change in the Camera Calibration sliders to reduce saturation and shift hues a bit.
Here are those user settings with the Adobe Standard camera profile at the left, compared to a pay-for VSCO Fuji film simulation profile along with using Auto Tone, Exposure -1 and Tint -150 to reduce the purple, on the right, but not quite as much as the OP's settings.  I'm not saying mine is an improvement or that VSCO profiles are useful, just that there are many ways to adjust an image and color profiles can make a difference especially in extreme lighting situations as we have, here:

  • OS gets corrupted after software updates

    Hello everyone,
My Macbook Pro has been having difficulties recently (eg. keyboard input changing to random symbols, Trackpad not fully functioning, Internet links not opening). I sent it to the Apple service centre. They informed that there was nothing wrong with my laptop's hardware but, a software update had corrupted my OS. Hence, they reloaded my OS and my mbp worked again. However, yesterday, when I installed the new Mountain Lion update, the same problems have resurfaced. Any idea why that might be happening?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Photo corrupted, repair software for MacBook Pro?

I have transferred photos from an old PC to a MacBook Pro.  I noticed in the PC some of the photos are corrupted which ends up the same on my Mac after I transferred them.  They are photos for a large family book that I am working on.
I need to know if there is (preferably free) software to repair/restore photos for a Mac?
Any thoughts are appreciated before I back up my Mac pictures/files on an external hard-drive.  I don't want to lose any of the photos.
    Thanks!

    Linc Davis wrote:
Do not waste money on Disk Warrior. First of all, it doesn't fix corrupt files at all, ever. It recovers damaged volume directories. Second, if you have adequate backups, you'll never need to recover a damaged directory, so you'll never need Disk Warrior. In this situation, it will do you no good at all. Your only hope is to restore the damaged files from a backup. If you don't have one, there's nothing to do. You will inevitably lose all data that isn't backed up, sooner or later.
Linc, Cannot argue with that at all.
I have an enormous number of support calls where Disk Warrior resolved or even saved a corrupted drive or RAID. Almost always this is necessitated only because there were insufficient backups in place. And Linc is absolutely correct, DW does not do anything except repair and modify directories. I have owned Disk Warrior for 10 years or more and have not used it for more years than I can remember. I maintain backups of everything and always find it easier to revert to a backup than to attempt repairs of a problem RAID/drive/directory/set of files.
In your case, I would not rule it out if you owned it, but would not spend money on it now. If you cannot go to the source PC and try to recover these files, then your copying corrupted file to a different operating system has negligible chance of repairing them.

  • Restart corruption after Software Update

I was prompted to run a software update for Quicktime and Prokit today (not sure of the versions, but I update frequently so they are the most recent.)
Leopard (er "Kitty Cat" rather) attempted to restart after the update, but it was stuck on quitting the Finder. I waited several minutes before I just shut it down myself (probably the cause of the problem). When I restart now, it's stuck in a loop using the program "Setup Assistant" (asking my country, apple ID, etc. all of which I inputed about a month ago). When I hit "Done" at the end of the form, it goes back to the beginning. I cannot access the Desktop. I tried loading Software Update again, as well as System Preferences. Nothing loaded. No window, just the App name in the top left toolbar.
I restarted as a Firewire drive (Holding "T") and mounted it on my other computer. I used Disk Utility which said the drive "appeared to be ok" (I hit Verify, as well as Repair). Then I restarted again and still encountered the same problem with Setup Assistant.
All my files are still on the computer, so I have a way to back it up. But is there an easy way around this whole startup problem?
    Thanks for any help!!

  • IPod Not being recognized with all the software updates

I've been without my iPod for a few weeks now and I desperately want it back. I dropped it a while back, and have come online to look up stuff to restore it, but none of that is working for me. I reset it by pressing "menu" and "Play" at the same time, then put it into disk mode by pressing the "ff" and "rwd" buttons together, but even in disk mode my computer is not recognizing it at all. The iPod screen says that it is in disk mode, and says it's okay to disconnect, but its not giving me the option to restore when I connect it to my computer and open the iPod updater.
It also gives me the file folder w/ an exclamation point whenever i don't put it into disk mode. And the few times that my computer does pick up something the iPod updater flashes a message that says "Can't Mount iPod" and then the updater manually closes itself. Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
20GB with Dock Connector   Windows XP

For "Cant mount iPod" - please try the following first
    Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
If still cant solve it then
The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • How can i check for corrupt data

I have a lot of machine embroidery designs stored on my imac and have reason to believe some may have corrupt data which is not evident when opening but has caused major damage to memory board in sewing machine. Is there anyway to scan for corrupt files?

My wifes sewing machine is in for service and repair because a couple of designs in the memory have somehow become too big for the machine to open them so it is not possible to edit or delete them. I sent the designs to brother and their machines developed a problem as well so they had to change the memory board and they can only put it down to a corrupt file even though they can't prove it as virus scans show all clear and the designs work fine on the computer with the sewing software program. Our machine worked fine except for not being able to remove 3 designs. Brother said their machines version number changed and also couldn't remove the designs. I have read that if a file is corrupt, backup software will detect it but again no problem there. I have sent the suspect designs to someone in the US who is going to access the design and see if they can find anything but at the moment I can't get any answers because its never happened before. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • Need Help...Do I have The mother of all itunes software problems???

I am in desperate need of help. I have fried three new ipod touches in two days. I Purchased a new 32GB 2d Gen ipod touch on Mon. 11/24. Worked okay till Friday 11/28. When I tried to sync with new additions, a warning came up “the ipod could not be updated, an unknown error occurred (9)” That was followed by a windows vista windows warning “USB device not recognized”
When I disconnected the touch I found that it could not be started. Tried a forced restore pressing the sleep switch and the home button together. That did not work.
Brought the touch to my apple store genius bar on Saturday and they too couldn’t get it to work. They switched out the ipod with a new one. Brought the new one home connected it and it received the new ipod touch software download okay. But when it tried to sync the same problem repeated…the two pop up warnings as before and a second dead ipod!
I then synced my ipod classic with no problems, so it appears the itunes software is okay. I’ve scheduled another appointment with the local apple store genius bar again.
When I took the new fried touch back to the Apple genius bar, it was switched out again. It was activated (by the initial step ipod touch software download on their computer.
I brought my laptop with me so we could test the syncing. The syncing proceeded initially for several minutes, and then the dreaded pop up warnings appeared
“the ipod could not be updated, an unknown error occurred (9)” That was followed by a windows vista warning “USB device not recognized”
The new replacement ipod touch was also fried.
The tech gave me yet another new ipod touch. He had never encountered such a problem and advised me delete and reinstall itunes and call the APL CARE 800 support number and go over the problem with one of their techs who have a broad range of experience in dealing with possible PC related issues.
As my other ipod has no problem syncing from the same laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520 using Vista) I am wondering if the problem might be a corrupted Itunes software problem that affects only the touch and not the ipod classics.
Has anyone heard of a bad itunes software related problem? I googled this and could find no info. Thanks for your help!

If you click View, Show Sidebar you will see the other libraries under Shared in the left hand column. Click on the Library you want and you can expand it to select Music, Movies etc. Select whatever items you want and click import if you want to move them to your Library.
You will have to have all computers authorised with the relevant Apple ID's
    Store  >  Authorise this computer...
This is separate from the Home Sharing username and password and is to allow playing of DRM Movies, TV shows etc from the other computer.
If both Computers use the same apple id this step is not required.

  • Apple TV cannot update software sucessfully

My Apple TV is currently on ver 2.3.1. Every time when I try to update the software, it downloads the software (successful) and tries to installs it (unsuccessful) afterwhich the amber light appears on the set and the question mark icon appears on the screen. What should I do?

Take it to an Apple Store.
At the very least don't keep trying to update as it is.
You could try holding menu and - keys for 6 secs which will boot to diagnostics, and from there do a factory restore which will wipe all settings/content.
There's a chance it will fail/break the AppleTV but I have to say it sounds as though it's failing now either due to an impending hardware fault or software corruption - if software you might be lucky and manage to return it to 'as new' software status.

  • FireWire DOWN after Software Update

Yesterday, I installed the DSTUpdateTi-001, SecUpd2007-002Ti, and JavaForMacOS10.4Release5 through Software Update, and have not been able to boot my external FireWire Drive, or access my digital video camera through its DV port since. I've already done the following:
    -repaired permissions
    -zapped PRAM
-replaced PRAM battery (it was old) and reset the motherboard
    -reset Open Firmware
    Nothing worked.
    Help?
    533 MHz PowerPC G4 (11.3) Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.8 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
