Corruption of Icons

I don't know what happened but all of a sudden all the new icons that get displayed on my desktop and maybe other places (i haven't checked everything) are showing up as randowm icons. I just uploaded 7 pictures from my camera and they are all .jpg but they showed up as hardrives, screenshots, application folders, etc. What do i do??

Hi,
I have a problem with icons that I place on the dock. I place them there - ie. one for photoshop, then when I come to use the icon it shows an imposed question mark over it, I drag it to the desktop where it disintigrates. I then go back to my applications folder and make another alias and place it back in the dock, it'll work for a week or so until it becomes corrupted again. Any ideas on why this happening?
Another problem I have had recently is the return key is not working properly. I used to hit return to save or whatever now I have to move the curser over the save button and click. This is quite a hassle as I have bad RSI (strain injury) and I'm now using the mouse in my left hand, which is by no means as fast. Any idea why this is happening. I have run disk aid, for verification and repair, but it has made no difference.
I'b be very grateful for any tips on this.
best,
john

  • Corrupt erase icons

    Hi all,
Lately, I'm experiencing problems with corrupt erase icons. I'm running Authorware 7.0 on Windows 7. When I copy a questionnaire from one authorware file to another, one of the erase icons becomes corrupt. When I want to delete the erase icon, I get the internal error 'cb1, 300' (like that is informative...). Saving and compacting results in the error 'Unable to save this file because of the following error: computer memory is full.' The solutions of the thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/897544?tstart=0 did not solve the problem. It would be nice to know why this error occurs, and how to prevent it in the future. Copying all the non-corrupted icons to a new file and creating a new, uncorrupted erase icon will also do the trick, but becomes quite tedious in the long run. So if anyone has a solution or a suggestion other than those already suggested, I would be happy to hear!
    Regards,
    Frank

@ Michael & Erik: thanks for the quick responses and suggestions! Really appreaciate it.
@ Michael: I've applied the free update from http://www.adobe.com/support/authorware/download.html, and dragged the icon to the side, to another place on the flowline, to another folder.... Nothing helped, it's still corrupted. I don't know exactly what backpointer lists are. Oh, and I don't mind if that particular erase icon does not erase anything anymore, I just would like to erase the little bugger:)!
@ Erik: Thanks for the tip on using save & compact often. I already save everytime I change anything (OK, almost anything), because Authorware has crashed on me on several occasions before without any warnings, so I've learned that from experience:). Next habit will be to save and compact.
You also mentioned that working off a network location is suspected of contributing to corrupted icons. I work from a USB stick, would that also contribute to corrupted icons? I also copied the files to my hard drive, and then the problems still exist. And in the past, I've had corrupted icons even when I worked locally all the time.
Save as still works, but save and compact does not work anymore. What's the difference between the two (of course the compacting part, but what does it do differently to prevent corrupted icons)? The zipping and unzipping trick was also known to me, and although it seemed useless I've tried it anyway without any succes. So it seems that I'm stuck with copying everything to a new file and start saving & compacting
Any other suggestions are welcome of course;)!

  • Corrupted / Deteriorating Icons- What causes this?

Multiple icons on my computer have been corrupted. It started with the external hard drive icon that time machine uses. Now it has "spread" to my hard drive, project folders on my desktop and sometimes email folders. The icons seems to be deteriorating. I believe all of the items affected are items that are backed up automatically during the day to the aforementioned external hard drive. When I select get info on the item, the preview is still intact but the picture at the top of the info folder and the icon itself are messed up. I have a screen grab but don't know how to attach it here. Also, when I connect the external hard drive to another computer, the icon is corrupted there also. The mac store suggests an archive and install. Theories?

    HI,
It started with the external hard drive icon that time machine uses.
Something on that drive is corrupting the icons.

  • How do I fix a corrupted Finder icon in the Dock

    Hello,
My Finder icon has spontaneously corrupted in the Dock. The icon of the Finder.app (in the CoreServices folder) is perfectly fine and its icon the Resources folder of the Dock.app is also perfectly fine.
Yet, the icon of Finder is corrupted in the dock as shown here: http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/2973/dockimage.png and in the picture below
    Any ideas, anyone?
    My specs are as follows:

Have you tried removing all files containing com.apple.dock from the Preferences folder in your HOME Library folder and in the ByHost subfolder of the Preferences folder, then restarting the Dock (or logout/login)?
(To get to the home Library folder, hold option key down while using the Finder Go menu, select Library. Or use the "Go to Folder...." option and paste in
    ~/Library/Preferences .)

  • IPhone Snyc Problems - Corrupted files, icons won't stay put

My iPhone/iTunes is acting very screwy. I'll try to be brief.
For a while now every time I synced I would get an error saying three particular .mp3 files could not be copied because they were corrupted (although they play fine in iTunes). I would delete and reinstall those files in iTunes and I would still get the error message every sync. At the same time my iPhone hard drive was gradually filling up with content classified as "Other" to the point where I barely had room for a few songs and a movie before the iPhone was full.
So I did a complete wipe-and-reinstall of my iPhone. I thought it would fix things but now whenever I sync the home screen icons are acting goofy. No matter where I put the "Voice Memos" icon, after every sync it re-appears on my home screen. And the Weather icon is completely missing from the home screens, including the extra "overflow" home screens that you can only see in iTunes (although the app still shows up under a Spotlight search so I know its there). Also, now when I sync my music I get three NEW files that iTunes claims are corrupted and can't be synced--although the files play fine in iTunes. (Not the same three files as it was claiming before).
I've wasted a day and a half already trying to get my iPhone and iTunes to play nice. I'm about ready to chuck the iPhone out the window. Any help our suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tips. Rebooting doesn't work, have tried that.
Restoring the iPhone - ahhh what a lovely process apple have come up with here... Given I'm abroad, web access is transient at best via wifi. And I can't use the data connection with my chosen NZ provider as the phone won't stay unlocked!
Is there a way to restore the phone WITHOUT a web connection? Itunes insists it must download the software - which is a 250MB download on a platform which doesn't support resumable downloads (What is this, 1998!?)
I'm loath to do a hard restore (Turn Off, Hold Home Button down for 10 seconds, incase this breaks the phone even more).
I'll definately be having words with my local apple store when I get back - I've never ever had this much trouble doing something as simple as an unlock before.

  • Latest CS6 update corrupts PS icon?

I applied the lateset automatic update to Photoshop CS6 (the one that adds Retina display support) and it's corrupted the Photoshop icon (Mac OS X).
Here's a composite screenshot showing the icon in the Dock, the small icon in the Finder's Column View, and the large icon in the Finder doesn't display at all, and is replaced with a generic icon. They all exhibit a different type of visual corruption.
Anyone else experience this? Any idea how to fix?
    Thanks,
    R

If the reboot doesn't completely fix it, see my post from last night when I saw the same thing:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4914538#4914538
On my system, the reboot was part of the procedure where I repaired permissions by booting to recovery partition. The reboot may well have fixed the finder issue, however Launchpad icon was not fixed until I deleted the .db file from '~/Library/Application Support/Dock' folder and rebooted a second time.
Note - you can disregard my last comment concerning final purchase since it isn't germaine to the issue.

  • Issue: USB HUB displaying corrupt drive Icons

    Hello everyone,
On my new computer (Windows PRO 8.1 64 Bit, Intel X99 (i7-5960X CPU)) I decided to install a 3.0 USB HUB. The HUB is a EXSYS EX-1181 10-port USB 3.0 HUB. In my initial configuration of my computer, my wireless headphone (LOGITECH wireless G930 Headset) signal
receiver was connected to the HUB as well as other USB keys. Little did I know that for proper use of my wireless headphones, the wireless signal receiver had to be connected
directly onto the computer and not indirectly like via a USB HUB port. Upon correction of the problem, my headphones worked properly.
However the fact that I plugged the headphones wireless signal receiver onto the HUB somehow corrupted the USB HUB. Now, whenever I plug a drive (USB stick, external hard drive, Ipod,...) onto the HUB, my computer always shows the connected drive with an
icon corresponding exactly to the headphones. No matter which port I use and no matter what I connect to the HUB, the drive will always have a Headset Icon on Windows Explorer and not the standard drive icon image.
Could anyone please help me with this issue?
    Thank you a lot,
    Best,

  • MacPro cursor icon corrupt

I have a new MacPro Quad core 2.8GHz system which is displaying a corrupt cursor icon. The cursor pointer has a noisy "grid" of spots extending to the bottom and right of the pointer. The grid size is approximately 5 times the size of the cursor pointer. The noise flickers over time.
I've tried the included hardware test application and no problems were found on the short test. When booting from the test disk, the cursor problem went away.
If I change the cursor size in Universal Access, the noise goes away approximately half way to the largest cursor and returns when I go back to "normal" size.
Changing screen resolution and rotation does not affect the noise. The noise persists.
Any ideas? Bad video? Bad RAM?
    Thanks,
    Chris

It's weird, but within system preferences, i have a strange icon which seems to be corrupt. the icon is the startup disc icon. it seems to have enlarged and the words "start up disc" have disappeared, because the icon has enlarged. I wondered if there is a way to reinstall the system prefs application or if there is a folder where i can replace the icon. I wanted to attach a pic to this topic but can't. but if anyone wants to help i can email the pic which a have screen captured.
Please help. It doesn't seem to effect my OS but it is a glitch and would love to sort it.

    Hi Leigh!
    Get Pacifist...
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
then extract what you need from your Install Disk.
    But 1st do these...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then boot from the HD, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.

  • Disappearing Adobe Icons

This is more cosmetic than functional, but annoying nonetheless.
All of the CS4 shortcuts are on my Win Vista desktop & all display the appropriate Adobe product icon. Suddenly now, the Premiere Pro and Encore icons are gone, leaving in their place the white generic Windows shortcut icons. Producing new shortcuts from the Programs list doesn't correct it (the correct icon is present until the shortcut is dragged to the desktop).
The shortcuts work, but I'd like to get the icons back.
    Any ideas?

If your desktop items display the wrong icons or no icons at all, enlarging and refreshing the icon cache should help. The easiest way is to download Microsoft's free (but unsupported) TweakUI PowerToy; there is a tool specifically for repairing desktop icons. See "Something for Nothing."
To do this manually, go to Start | Run and enter Regedit to launch the Registry Editor. Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer. In the right-hand pane, find or create the DWORD value MaxCachedIcons. To enlarge the cache size, double-click on this value and change it to 4096 in decimal. If the problem recurs, try an even larger value.
Next, you must force Win XP to reread all the cached icons. Right-click on the desktop, choose Properties, click on the Appearance tab in the dialog box that pops up, and click on the Advanced button on that tab. Select Icon in the Item list and increase the Size setting by 1 pixel (this will normally be from 32 to 33). Click on OK to dismiss the Advanced Appearance dialog, then click on the Apply button. The desktop will fade and then return back to normal. Now click on the Advanced button again, change the icon size back to what it was, click on OK, and click on OK again.

Fix Blank or White Shortcut Icons on Desktop
Once in a while, the shortcut icons on the Windows desktop may suddenly been changed or became blank or ‘white paper’ icon, where supposedly the icons should be colorful and customized in style and color. It’s as if the icon for the shortcut has been removed or unassigned, and been replaced with default blank icon in white.
The bug happens whenever there is corruption in icon cache database. For example, in Windows 7 pre-RC release, a network connection
or broadband connection shortcut’s icon placed on desktop by user manually will go haywire and turn into blank default icon if there is another third-party program places an icon on desktop later.
In order to fix the problem where shortcut icons turn to blank icon, try to refresh or rebuild the cache database for icons. There are many system management software utilities that may reset the icon cache db automatically, but here’s how to reset the icon cache db manually.
To refresh and reset the icons cache, go to the following folder:
    C:\Users\\AppData\Local\
To see the hidden AppData folder, go to Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View tab, and select Show hidden files, folders and drives, and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
Once inside the folder, delete IconCache.db. Create a new file named IconCache.db, and set it to Read Only attribute in Properties (if the file is not read only, the cache won’t be reset). Then restart the computer. Remove the Read Only attribute of IconCache.db file, and the icons cache will be refreshed. The step will restore the desktop shortcut icons to their lawfully icons.

  • Problem with iBook G3....

I just ordered this computer off of eBay and I seem to be having troubles already.
When I start up the computer the options bar at the top does not appear and it continuously loads, but nothing happens. I am also having a problem with the keyboard not working. If anybody has any suggestions, that would be great. Thanks.

Just to add my two cents in here. Believe it or not, the battery could be the culprit in this case. I had a friend who has an iBook G3 900 Mhz and apparently his battery fell under the extension program to be replaced. He did have issues with the battery which is when he asked me what to do. He said that it was like it had a bug in it. His system was running 10.3 at the time, not sure what version though. The menu bar probably is not showing up due to a corrupt menu icon in core services. Even though it seems silly for such a thing to occur, it can happen. One time I had an issue with my menu bar, but it eventually came up. Turns out that my backup battery I have had a software glitch with 10.5, so I needed to download a patch update. I did that and the menu bar is flawless now. It had an icon that told me the percentage of battery level left. Anyway, it is possible and I am not sure how to solve this, but you may want to take it in to an Apple Store to have the battery checked out. If you do find the CDs, I recommend performing system maintenance first and then taking further action. Best of luck.

  • InFocus LiteShow Manager crippled

I am using a MacBook Pro in my classroom to project wirelessly. When I installed OS 10.5 and attempted to connect by wifi to projector in my classroom (InFocus X2) using LiteShow Manager, I get a crash every time. Initially the program picks up the device and allows me to project, but when it resizes the resolution and downsizes the dialog box, there is about a one second delay and the application crashes with a nice line of vertical bars across the dialog box which reappears. This crash usually corrupts the icons in the bottom bar and changes them to gibberish or a 2D object.
I have reinstalled the Manager software on the computer and tried connecting to another projector in another classroom with identical results.
    It ran flawlessly in 10.4.
I have contacted InFocus support, and so far had cheerful but ineffective help.
Any suggestions that I can try on the OS?

  • Unusual behaviours since daisy chaining a new external hd

    Hi
my mac has worked flawlessly since i got it over 3 & 1/2 years ago.
I added a new external hd by daisy chain fire wire last week & suddenly
odd behaviours are occuring for the first time ever all in the space of a week.
    1. Frozen mouse - unable to use the pointer - fixed by un/re pluging mouse.
    2. corrupted finder icons one or two - fixed by re-starting.
    3. external hd icon unmounting when i do an action in a running app,
eg: turned a page in acrobat reader - fixed by restarting external hd.
    4. put to sleep manually - black screen but computor & external hds still
'not asleep' - couldnt get the desk top screen to appear - fixed by re
    booting with external side button.
A sense of things coming abit undone !
I want to trouble shoot this before it gets out of hand & i want to avoid causing any damage to my internal hardware.
Could anyone provide me with some kind of diagnosis & insight ?
    thanks
    d

    hi
okay - in response to posts so far......
    1. i havent used it yet with fcp
    2. it is running off its own power supply, not off the fire wire cable.
    3. i am not using any hub - its daisyed into the first external hd which is then
linked to the emac by fire wire. The chain is firewire 400 cable in all
    instances.
Both external hds have their own seperate power supply .
    JMVP WROTE:
"....This is especially true if the daisy-chained drive is drawing power through the Firewire cable. Daisy-chaining data through independently-powered drives is known to be iffy."
So what you're suggesting is daisychaining par-se is a no no.
Both in the case of the device powered via the firewire
cable AND if it's independantly powered.
Does this mean DAISY = DANGER ?
The verdict so far is that i should abandon daisy chains and switch to fire wire hubs....or direct seperate inputs into the emac.........
Aside from a debate about the pros & cons of the Daisy.........
i'm open to other trouble shooting lines of thought to my situation.
    thanks

Can anyone help me out with this?
    Thanks,
    The Tech Nut

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.
The issue may be related to corrupted application files. To troubleshoot this kind of issue, I would like to propose the following suggestions.
    1. Initialize Sticky Notes from its source folder. Generally, the default location is C:\Windows\System32\StikyNot.exe.
If you can open Sticky Notes from its source folder, the issue is due to corrupted shortcut icon. If it is the case, you need to delete sticky shortcut icon and create a new one from the source folder and pin it to the Start menu.
    Otherwise, please continue the step.
    2. Open a Command Prompt to run the following command to fix corrupted system files.
1)Click the Start button and type "Command Prompt" in the search box.
2)Right click Command Prompt to run as Administrator.
3)Type: sfc /scannow to scan the whole disk.
    3. Copy StikyNot.exe from another available Operating System to the current computer.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.
