Corruption to MBR?

Hello,
I have a nasty issue at our site currently. We support a complex
environment with 2 seperate networks, 2 SOE's and zen4 and zen 6.5.
Our new Lenovo pc's being the M55 and T60 are experiencing booting
issues where they fail to get past the window xp splash screen. We
running XP Sp1 pc's. THe pc's can be imaged and the users profile
configured, the pc then dispatched to user it maybe ok for some days
before the boot problem arises. But sometimes the pc will fail after
pulling down the image from our distribution server. Both the M55
(desktop) and the T60 (laptop) are SATA. When a faulty pc come back to
us we can run a checkdisk it this will fix the errors and allow the pc
boot and run normally.
Every pc identifies the same curruption when running checkdisk, the
error is -
corrupt attribute type 176 in file 9
Well at the moment after extensive testing we are stumpted?
I can offer much more techical information if required, if anyone can
shed some light on our delema is would be greatly appreciated.

How can I fix a corrupt ssd mbr or gpt

I have a Runcore 64gb mini pci-e SSD with a USB cable. It is not new but used little. I wanted to make it bootable as a usb device but may have hosed it. What I did: (sorry, this is long)
Set up a single guid partition, and sucsessfully made a 63gb partition.
Then I used "erase free space" on the partition.
Here's where I screwed up. I decided to start over and "secure erased" the drive, not the partition I created, but the whole drive. That was a bone head mistake.
Well, after that, I could not change the partition and the root drive shows it's 2tb. disk repair says it's good. Funny thing is, I could still see the partition but not repartition.
I even used Carbon Copy Cloner to put 10.6.7 on the partition. It worked, I could boot to it. But it still won't let me change anything. I kept trying different erase options and continued to say it could't complete the task--until the last time I tried it. Now I can't see the partition. I still see the drive in disk util but can't do anything with it. It shows the same way on a Windows7 machine (2.2 tb).
After a lot of googling, It seems I have a corrupted MBR but the GPT part that Mac uses was ok...or used to be. Sometimes the drive shows "0" capacity, sometime 2.2tb. Last night I had dreams about MBR's GRUBs and GPTs. Today, in terminal, I typed "diskutil list" and got: identifier disk2, size 30.5gb (which is the size of the CCC drive I cloned), and the partition name that I originally made which was 63gb.
All I want to do is clean it off and start over. I don't care about the data. Any Advice? I would like to try something before tossing it. I'm totally willing to try anything since there is no critical data on it.

Macbook Pro start up issue

I have a problem with a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 8gb ram, 500mb hard drive, Mavericks. The problem started when I loaded up about 100 tabs in Chrome for a long airplane ride.
It crashed and would book up to the flashing folder. My speculation is that I filled up the swap file and a memory leak or swap overflow corrupted the MBR. I was able to boot from the Internet recovery and verified my MacOS 10.9.1 partition, and all was well, but it would not reboot.
I was (and am) able to boot MacOS 10.7.1 (from a 2008 white Macbook) from an external USB drive. I did a lot of thrashing (multiple power off resets, etc), and sometimes was able to see the internal 500mb drive, and sometimes not. I tried to change the partition size to rewrite a new MBR (found this in a forum via Google) but the repartition failed.
Eventually I figured out to reset the boot using Startup disk. I thought all was well. I was able to do a poweroff reboot successfully. I relaunched chrome, it loaded ALL the tabs and crashed again. I worked through and was able to reset the boot disk again. Unfortunately it is not reliable, it still hangs and sometimes does not find the disk. Sometimes I can’t launch Internet recovery to launch.
I have a good time machine backup. (about 400mb). I have an external 320gb drive with 10.7.1 loaded from a white macbook. I have another external drive with 10.6 from a 2009 MBP, and a copy of 10.9.1 copied onto a SD Card.
Any suggestions on the root cause of the problem? Is it just a corrupt hard drive? Could it be a firmware issue? Could it be a hardware issue? If so, disk or motherboard, or ?

There is an option to Load All Windows when restarting an Application. I think it is under the General Tab in System Prefereneces. Un-Check that Option.
But the Flashing ? mark is a sign something else is going on. Just having the OS crash from an overload of an Application shouldn't then produce that ? mark alert.

Solaris 8 x86 Hangs on reboot with Verfying DMI Pool Data

I've just installed solaris 8 on intel. I previously run 2.7 on same system no problem.
After installing 8 and rebooting the machine hangs after displaying
Verifying DMI Pool Data .........
It appears to of verified, but then does nothing else. I have checked all components are compatible (supported), tried differing rebuilds, upgrading from 2.7 However every time I get the same problem.
Any ideas?

I need you to think really hard here with me...what was the last program, piece of hardware you loaded into the machine? I've seen this problem so many times and it will drive you wild...you're having a driver or software issue during bootup and it's hanging the system..
What I would do is see if I can get into safe mode by hitting F8 as the system starts up...if it will boot into safe mode then go uninstall whatever the program is that you installed last or uninstall the drivers of whatever hardware you installed last...
Then try rebooting again normally...
I'll warn you now that I've only been successful in doing this when I've rebooted the system twice prior to trying this fix...if you rebooted more than twice it will corrupt your MBR and you'll have to FDISK and start all over again...
Insert your boot disk Win98SE preferred...select Boot from floppy with no CDROM or Network...
Type FDISK at the A prompt...go in and delete the non dos partition...DON'T CREATE ANOTHER PARTITION OR FORMAT THE DRIVE...
If it's a Western Digital Drive go to their website and get their Drive Utility tool and run it on the drive...
If it's a Maxtor go get Powermax from their site and run it on the drive...
Do same for any other mfg drive i.e. Seagate, IBM or whatever...
THEN if it passes the tests with no errors use the drive to reload your OS again...THIS TIME load your drivers one at a time, same with your software...Do a system restore point prior to each load...this way you can easily undo whatever fails if anything...

Do not even try to use Partition Magic. If you do an operation on your Windows disk using Partition Magic, Partition Expert or any other such program, you will not be able to boot your Windows!
when bootcamp creates Windows partition, it sets this partition as active. thus, Windows sees this partition as C drive, and can boot without any problem. But, if you use such a program, It will corrupt the MBR, C: drive will disappear for windows, and it will not boot. This can even make bootcamp unable to run anymore!
I tried to partition my windows partition like that for installing linux, and it screwed up! I could repartition and install windows+linux (triple boot). But this was really a pain! but right now I am unable to use BootCamp. i manually extract the drivers.
And you talk about resizing OSX partition via Partition Magic. This can even damage hole system! I just tried to divide Windows partition in 2, and I lost Windows and BootCamp. if you try resizing OSX partition, you will lose everything as your MAC does not use old HD partitioning scheme like PCs do!
I suggest you to not try that... It is easier to reinstall windows. So the best way is to use BootCamp for deleting Windows, and recreating Windows partition afterwards. Try getting the Image of your Windows partition before erasing it. Maybe after resizing, you can use your old Windows image, so you will not have to install Windows from scratch...

Resizing windows and panels?

This seems strange to me, but maybe I'm missing something. I can't resize the panels horizontally if the "inspector/library/file browser" pane is shown. At the same time, maximizing the window sends the bottom of the motion window behind the dock, and attempts to resize it just cause it to go away instead of resizing. Is it necessary to hide the dock? or not be able to resize the window and adjust the layout?

Weird Startup Error on Toughbook CF-71

Hi guys,
This may be a software problem, but I probably hadn't configured something correctly.
Everything was well on the Toughbook CF-71 running the latest Arch.
But then, one night, I didn't realize I left the computer on letting the battery discharge. I wake up the next morning and I found it was unplugged. After cursing, I proceeded to reconnect the power plug. But to my amazement, the BIOS screen comes and then it blanks on me indefinitely. This is a weird battery/apm/something problem.
I know I installed apm and I had to recreate the hibernate partition for the toughbook, but hadn't really configured it in arch yet. I know the last thing that was running was xscreensaver, but with no power management options when I closed the laptop before sleeping.
I don't imagine it would have hibernated. Standby, maybe? But grub should show up and all when I boot up. Nope, just the BIOS screen and then darkness.
Clearly, the battery has drained. Maybe I'm just be impatient. This is an old laptop. But why can't I even enter the BIOS setup utility now? It turns on, the HDD led flickers for a sec and then total darkness. It's really weird.
Currently, I have taken out the laptop battery and unplugged the power. I don't how to take out the CMOS battery and I won't bother with that. Hoping that someone here could troubleshoot this. Maybe, I have to fully charge the battery now and wait to turn it on then.
I don't know. Please someone help me. Thanks a bunch!!

UPDATE
So I took the hard drive out and started it up. I had it setup so that it would boot straight to the hard drive. Taking it out, it updated the BIOS and now I could access the setup menu. Whew!!
So, clearly, something went wrong with the hard drive and grub with that too. My guess is that the BIOS gave instructions to apm to hibernate or something and then that somehow corrupted the MBR.
But, there's a twist!! I put the hard drive back in and it now booted arch just fine, like before.
I'm not really sure how hibernation/apm works with these old laptops; these laptops require a separate partition for hibernation, which I already setup through tphdisk, but if someone here knows how to set up hibernation in general for old laptops in arch, I'd love to know!!! Thanks again!!

Corrupt MBR on Yoga 2 Pro - Need advice

I have tried to install dual-boot on my Lenovo Yoga 2 pro, but unsuccessfully. Once I gave up on the idea, I rebooted and Windows woudn't start, instead I am getting the following error:
Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed.
Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key
Then Select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media
(If I disable UEFI, then I get "Missing operating system")
Unfortunately I don't have a recovery disc.
According to a third-party repair tool I have on a USB, the MBR is corrupted, and all attempts at using the command prompt returned "command not found" (as the same 3rd party suggested I run "chkdsk C: /f") . Since the computer is new, I have no problem if all memory is wiped (there was hardly anything on it), but I'd really like to return to my original Windows configuration. Unfortunately, without any recovery disc, and as I don't have a product key for win 8.1, I'm not sure what are my options.
Any advice or suggestion, anyone?

If you repaired the MBR and it will not boot this AM I would just take it back and exchange it. Chances are very good there is a problem with the harddrive.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 generation 2 VM corrupted system partition after restart

We have a cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V feature.
One VM that has Windows 2012 R2 Standard OS installed (generation 2) was corrupted via restart.
VM has 3 virtual disks (VHDX) - first for system (dynamic size), second for SQL_data (fixed size) , third for SQL_logs (fixed size)
Yesterday, I restarted VM and VM didn't come up, I got error
- 'Boot Failed. Windows Boot Manager'
- 'Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device'
Looked all three VHDX we noticed that the first one (system) was corrupted - partition and MBR are gone inside VHDX.
Second and third one are OK, we can mount them and access all data on it.
It looks like on first VHDX (system with SQL 2014 installed) partition was corrupted, so we can't do repair because it's says unknown partition.
There were no updates applied to VM, corrupted partition is 40GB size (dynamical) with 18GB of data used.
This is first generation 2 VM that we have, all others are generation 1 without any problems.
Can anyone please explain us, how can this happened, since we did nothing inside VM, also cluster reports no errors, checking VHDX looks fine, just partition inside got corrupted.
We like to find out what happened, before we deploy more Win2012 R2 VM (gen2) in production envirionment.

H8-1520t: sfc /scannow reported file corruption in Windows 8.1

My computer (h8-1520t) computer had had file corruption error reported by sfc /scannow.
The corruption was rather common corruption as discovered elsewhere on the internet. The corruption pertained to prncacla.inf and it was repaired only by using DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. The corruption occured while the computer was doing automatic maintenance which locked up my system. After forcing a shutdown and rebooting, I immediately ran sfc /scannow and that's when the corruption was first detected.
Now sfc /scannow finds no corruption and automatic maintence runs to completion.
Since this is a rather common corruption error and there's no explanation as to what causes the problem, should I send my computer, which it's still under warranty, back to HP ---or--- did I corrected the corruption properly ? ? ?
On additional question: What on earth causes that common corruption to occur anyway.
Also: UEFI diagnostics extensively run and the extensive testing revealed no problems with system board, hard drive, memory, processor (i7-3770), graphics card memory (Radeon HD 8570).
If I should be concerned about my computer being a dud and lemon, I'd like to know... Or, did I fix the corruption correctly?

You may want to review this article.
If you are not comfortable with the Windows repair process then you can use the external HP recovery media to reload you PC back to a day one factory fresh condition. Backup your data before doing so.

Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)

I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.

Before you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy.

Can I repair the Master Boot Record (MBR) or Volume Boot Record (aka Windows boot partition) for Windows XP using Windows Vista/7 commands?

I have an SSD drive whose file system is corrupt and unreadable and it's OS of choice is Windows XP SP3 32-bit. I don't have a Windows XP disc.
Is it possible to repair the Master Boot Record (MBR) or Volume Boot Record (VBR) using a Windows Vista or 7 Recovery Disc? What about a Windows PE disc?
I researched around the Internet and found a command in Windows PE called bootsect (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/bios-booting/ht/bootsect-nt60.htm) that can repair both older and new Windows Volume Boot Code (NTLDR or BOOTMGR). The link states that the
bootsect command does NOT fix the MBR. Even the technet site here lists a reference to bootsect and that it can repair the MBR of both old and new versions of Windows (which doesn't appear to be correct). Can I use bootsect to restore the VBR of XP?
If bootsect cannot help me, then what is its purpose? Possible ex: Someone has a dual-boot XP and 7 system, the user uninstalls XP, and then uses bootsect to write BOOTMGR to the VBC.
I would appreciate any insight. Again, I don't have an XP disc. But I do have a WinPE disc and Win 7 Recovery disc and I was hoping I could fix my XP MBR and/or Windows VBR with one of the two.

Windows To Go windows/system32/Winload.exe corrupt or missing

I have a windows to go hard drive and an error came up recently saying "windows/system32/winload.exe corrupt or missing". I made a recovery drive from normal windows 8 but it cant detect the windows to go hard drive (I think its because its only

EDIT:: it should say winload in the title

I've got the same issue like you and resolved that without repartition and reinstall window to to.
I will so you step by step what i did to resolve the error with winload.exe corrupt or missing. I hove that will help you resolve your problem too.
As you known: Window to go run in a external harddrive with 2 partitions. The first Partition have 350 MB (FAT32, active partition and it contain boot files). The second partition have remaining space (contain window files).
The first you need a computer have a working window 7 or 8 OS(recommend window 8 or highter)
Plug your window to go hard drive to the window.
Assign the first partition 350 MB by disk manager with letter Z: (normally the fist partition 350 MB is not mounted)
Assign the second (contain windows files) with letter O:
Delete all file in the partition Z:
Open CMD and do the command.
O:\windows\system32\bcdboot O:\windows /f ALL /s Z:
Restart and boot to window to go.
If you want to know why i did that, read below:
(External Hard Drive = EHD)
i found a lot of the suggests in the internet and did that.
- I had try to replace the winload.exe file in the second partition but it not effect.
- I replace the registry data in folder \windows\system32\config but it not effect.

- System repair not work with EHD.
After i did all the ways found in the internet, i think that, the problem is not due to winload.exe file.
I read the tips to install window togo again and i try to reinstall the window to go without repartition.
The install have 2 steps:
- 1: Partition and set active.
- 2: Copy file and make boot
I ignor the first step because my EHD have got 2 partitons like the tips.
I delete all file and folder relate to window except my pertional data (in the 2nd partition).
I extract install.wim file and copy all to the 2nd partition. I restart and boot to EHD but it still got error.
I'm used Bootice and check the MBR of EHD and i got unknown MBR. I think the the problem.
So I used Bootice software, set MBR of EHD = Windows NT 6.x. and I
Set PBR to 2 partitions are BOOTMGR boot record (FAT32/NTFS/ExFAT). I restart and boot to EHD but it still got error.
Next, I delete all file in 1st partition of EHD.
I Open CMD and do the command
"o:\windows\system32\bcdboot o:\windows /f ALL /s z:"
after that, i restart and boot to EHD and it worked. The window to go work perfect but i lost all settings :)
So i think the 2nd partition and all files is ok. The problem is by the 1st partition.

Error made while clearing the MBR

Hey guys,
I have macbook and while trying to do a triple boot (SL, Windows7, Arch) system, I messed up the MBR and had to reset it.. I am new to the Mac so, didnt realize that ; /dev/sda reffered to the HD and /dev/hda reffered to the cd/dvd drive, needless to say I did,
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=446 count=1
and wham now when I load about the arch live cd and try to load setup I get
Error opening terminal: Linux.
I cleared the MBR with the correct command
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=446 count=1
but no dice, I still get the same error. any ideas on how to get around this?

I've only come across this error before when the terminfo entry is missing or corrupted. Could you check the md5sum of the disk? I doubt this is related to the erroneous command, which I believe to be completely harmless (incapable of writing to the media).
Out of interest, what was the need to zero the MBR before performing the install?

COMPAQ presarioc700 my lap showing that MBR nomber is greater than the BIOS nomber

when am trying to start my laptop it saying that some MBR no is greater than the BIOS nomber and after that its taking time and up to click enter and sometimes its giving sound like a crack, and when am trying to update my bios in that its not showing my OS presently am using WINDOWS7,is there require to update bios or what should i do please help thank u
