Which is better as a production web server: JWSDP or Tomcat 4.0?
Also, do I need to run the Apache HTTP Server in a high-volume production website?
Thanks. The arguement has always been that Tomcat was used for dynamic content and Apache HTTP for static content.
For a production site using Apache solutions, your best bet is to use Apache HTTP and Tomcat in an integrated manner.
You can setup HTTP and Tomcat to act as one via the use of mod_webapp so they appear as one server.
However (and I'm sensing the flames as I type this), if you are running a seriously high volume server, you may be better off researching alternatives such as the iPlanet range. While I'm not saying they are better, they do seem to have a large market share which MAY indicate they are worth while.
For my part I run HTTP and Tomcat on my domain as they are free and my site is extremely low volume.

Is there a version of iplanet webserver that is a low cost equivalent to personal web server?
FastTrack is available for free. There isn't currently a FastTrack version of 6.0, however. The latest FastTrack version is 4.1.

Error on live web server - Retrieving the COM class factory for component
I've had a good read of this forum and can't find the answer to this particular issue. Everything works fine until I upload my vb.net/crystal reports solution to my live production web server. The error I get when I try to open a Crystal Report from the web is:
Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {059AC10F-0010-4C43-8876-1FC7BEAF218B} failed due to the following error: 80070005.
It is the following line of my VB.net source code that causes the error.
Dim oRpt As New CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument
I've installed CRRuntime_12_0_mlb.msi to my Windows 2008 / IIS7 web server (This is a 64bit server).
The website works fine on a 32 bit system but on this new server I keep getting the above errors.
I've tried resinstalling the crystal reports numerous times and restarting. I've also tried installing the SP2 version of the CRRuntime and still get the same errors.
I've added read/write permissions to Windows/Temp directory for Network Service.
I've tried to manually register sacommlayer.dll which registers correctly.
The website is not compiled into a binary, the aspx.vb files are simply uploaded to the webserver and compiled on the fly by the server.
I've tried to add <identity impersonate="true" userName="MACHINENAME\administrator" password="PASSWORD" /> into the web.config file to see if this gets any further.
It does however then errors on the following VB Line.
oRpt.SetDataSource(dsSWMP)
with the error
Failed to load database information.Error in File crSitewasteManagementPlan {BEC6811A-D612-4ED6-9AF7-B0C9BED7A966}.rpt:
Failed to load database information
I've also tried opening up the C: / D: drives to the NETWORK SERVICE account with full control (temporarily) to see if I can get past the errors, however this has not worked for me.
Any other ideas to why this might not be working? Ideally I would not like to be using the identity impersonation at all.
Kind Regards
JamesDear Ludek,
I have tried manually registering the sacommlayer.dll already however this didn't make a difference.
I have checked versions of this DLL between the 2 servers and they are the same. (v12.0.0.683)
Find below the logs from process monitor for the 64 bit server.
It definitely shows where it is failing.. any suggestions to fix it?
I can email more detailed logs if you supply me with your email address.
Kind Regards
James

Using DW I created a simple flash slideshow. It works fine in test but when I move the page, photos and file to the production server, it does not show. The first time I tested it on the test server, a message came up and said it was installing something. I think the web server must also need this installed but I don't know what it was that DW installed. Can anyone tell me if there is a requirement I need to install on the production web server?
You'll probably get better results if you post this in the Dreamweaver forum:
http://forums.adobe.com/community/dreamweaver/dreamweaver_general
That said, you don't need to install anything on the web server to run a Flash slideshow. The browser needs Flash Player, but most browsers already have it installed. If it works in your test environment and not in your production environment, I'd make sure you uploaded all your files to the correct locations on the web server.

Web Server in Java- Running Servlets and JSP files?
I am developing a web server in java. i wish to execute server side tools(jsp and servlets) in this web server. how i can add this functionalities to this server? is any tools in java are available for running these?
There certainly are. Perhaps the best known is Tomcat, part of the Jakarta project at http://jakarta.apache.org.

Which web server recommended for web development?
am running on windows xp, what are your recommendations regarding the web server?
am looking to develop JSP, servlets and web services.JBoss, GlassFish and Tomcat are three pretty popular ones. I'd recommend researching them, seeing which one fits your needs and making a selection. No one here knows your full set of requirements or what you intend on doing and - therefore - no one here is qualified to tell you which product to use. Only you know what you need so only you can make the decision.

Is there any documentation on CFs developer web server.
I installed on my machine not having a webserver.
Can I change settings or run mutiple sites.
If not, how do I then disable now that it is installed?
And what would be the best recommendation for a simple webserver for windows7Woribhabor, I'll address the 3 questions you asked.
1) First know that there is no interface for managing the built-in web server provided in ColdFusion. It's managed instead via XML files. There is some discussion of that in the CF "administration and configuration" manual. For example, in CF9:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusion/9.0/Admin/WSc3ff6d0ea77859461172e0811cbf364104-7fd8 .html
There is even more in the available JRun documentation (since JRun underlies CF and the web server is technically the JRun web server).
Finally, there was also an article on configuring it that brings together the key points from both:
http://www.adobe.com/support/coldfusion/adv_development/config_builtin_webserver/index.htm l
To be clear, the built-in web server is not intended to be used for production. Both the installer and these docs clarify that over and over.
2) You ask what would be the "best recommendation for a simple webserver for windows7". It would seem IIS would be your best recommendation, since it's built-into Windows 7 (and Vista and XP).
That said, note that IIS 7 (which is what's built into Windows 7) is only formally supported by CF 9.0.1 (the free Updater 1 for CF 9). While you can try to make IIS 7 work for CF 9.0, or 8 or 7, it takes a fair bit of work, undocumented (though written of by many on various blog sites). If for some reason you could not run CF 9.0.1, and especially if you had any aversion to IIS, others will note of course that you can easily install Apache and use that. Each has their strengths and weaknesses depending on the audience.
3) Finally, you ask how to disabled the built-in web server. That too is done by modifying the appropriate xml file and setting. It's mentioned in the various docs, but perhaps the best single page to point to would be this:
http://www.adobe.com/support/coldfusion/adv_development/config_builtin_webserver/config_bu iltin_webserver03.html
Hope that helps.

Install a test JSP Web Server on a mac for a PHP developer
I am looking to write some simple JSP pages. I need a Java web server and the development kit [JSPWDK or is it JSWDK?]
I have only Java SE 6.0 installed on my mac. I have Snow Leopard OS.
I had trouble in the downloads finding the right one, but I downloaded the
jswdk_0_1_solsparc.tar.z
I was looking for a regular UNIX JSWDK and didn't find one?
Will the Solaris Sparc version work for a mac?
I have apache on my mac. I normally use PHP but for a web project.
I need the JSP server.
Can I install the JSP Server on my mac along with the Apache server. This is only for development.
I have got Zend Framework for PHP running on my mac so I don't want to mess up too much for this test.
Thanks for any advice or any pages anywhere to help but I can install from a tar file if there isn't too much configuration.
TIA.Hi,
If you need to install a full development environment with Tomcat in Mac OSX take a look at my tutorial at http://jmaw.blogspot.com.es/2012/08/minimo-entorno-de-desarrollo-java-mac.html. The blog has translation if you need it.
I hope I can help. Also you can. Install both servers taking care of the ports, usually Tomcat listens requests by the port 8080 while Apache server listens requests by the default http port 80.
Best regards,

Developing a small Web Server?
Hello,
Is there anywhere I can go to get information on developing a small web server, just so I could learn how they work with java?
SherazSheraz --
Are you talking about writing a webserver in java? If so, the Java Examples in a Nutshell (O'Reilly) had an example that helped me a lot when I was first looking at that. That was a couple of years ago, and even then it wasn't totally up to date. Still, the examples there taught me a lot. There is a new edition of the book, so hopefully the example is still there and updated. If so, it's definitely what I'd look at to get started.
Hope that helps,

Hi,
I am working on a Javascript for Apex. The changes are not reflected and I was told to restart the app server. Is there a better way for Apex to process the changed Javascript? Thanks.Hi,
I assume you store JavaScript to web server folder and browser caches your file.
Use query string end of file name like
/my.js?v=0.0.1
And when you change file, change query string value
Templates JavaScript help says:
File reference using a query string in the URL referencing the application version, such that when the application is upgraded
(and the version is incremented), the browser will be instructed to always load the new file and ignore any previously cached files.
/myjs/main.js?version=#APP_VERSION# -
Oh man it looks like a problem with the web server.
Its an error that happens on SAP, even my dad reported an error like this to me but i wasn't able to solve it.
What i find is that its an error with browser incompatibility,

Invoking Parameter form using Run Product in Web Server
Hi
I am facing a problem in executing a report from forms in Web
Server
if i use Run_Product it does not display Parameter Form ,Even if
i assign Yes to paramform
else
if i use
web.show_document it displays the paramform but does not execute
the report ,Note:if i set paramform no the entire report is
executed successfully
kindly provide appropriate solution
ThanksOne solution is:
1. Install Oracle Report Server
2. Use the built-in WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT instead of RUN_PRODUCT
3. The only small problem is the parameter passing to the reports, but this is described well in the documentation
4. After the first succesful run of the SHOW_DOCUMENT the RUN_PRODUCT will reestablish his functionalty,
but we do not know when it will deliver the next surprise. So it is a bad idea to use RUN_PRODUCT before Oracle fixes the bug. -
Setting Up a Java Web Server on Linux
Greetings,
After a lot of reading, I've decided to learn Java server-side technologies (I already know Java (desktop)
but with little experience) in order to develop my database driven dynamic website projects.
However, I'm completed lost between the hundreds of acronyms related to Java and the "thousands" of technologies involved.
Google hadn't help me understand what they really are and how they relate with each other.
Even though is easy to find what they stand for and some faqs/descriptions, it hasn't been enought to clear my mind.
I want my webserver application to do, among other things, the following:
Retrieve Data from a database, do generate dynamic html files.
Story Data on the database, from html forms.
Send automaticly emails for multiple users. (newsletter for example)
E-Commerce.
Html graber/parser (I don't know if this is the right word, I mean a program that for example, goes to a URL with an html
table, and stores that information in a database table, as long as the format didn't change).
Real Time Chat feature.
Database connection pooling, caching, and other important optimizations.
I'm not asking for how to develop or configure this features nor what components and programs, must be installed.
At the moment, I only want to know how to set up a Java solution that will support them when they are needed.
*** Linux ***
I want to set up my webserver on a linux distribution.
In that respect, I don't know if I should choose RedHat or Fedora Core.
I've heard that fedora is better for a webserver (having in mind that Red Hat Enterprise AS/ES aren't free).
But I've read in several sun turorials/webpages references to RedHat (on a J2EE context).
So I'm wondering if is better to go for Fedora or RedHat. Are there pros & cons? They equally support Java?
*** Technologies ***
Then in starts the acronyms problem.
What do I need to install, in what order, for what?
Some aconyms and technologies, I have read about but don't fully understand are the following:
Apache
J2EE
J2EE 1.4 SDK
SUN Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8
J2SE 1.4.2 SDK
SUN Java Enterprise System
Tomcat
Struts
Cocoon
JBoss
I already know J2EE is only a specification. What implements that specification? Sun Java System Application Server?
J2SE SDK? or Tomcat?
What is the role of each technology, namely Apache, Tomcat, Sun Application Server?
What is the Sun Java Enterprise System?
How do Struts, Cocoon, JBoss relate to Java?
Which of these technologies are mutually exclusive (analogous)?
*** Doubts ***
Then, I have some doubts that are keeping me from starting to study seriously the important techonologies, because I don't
want to lose lot's of time and effort learning them to after a dillusion start everything again with PHP (the language
which make me think and read a lot before going for Java). To keep this from happening, I would like to know the following:
I want to use Java for developing websites with commercial/profitable use for my company, in some throught e-commerce,
and in other by banners. I want to do everything by the book, with required licenses.
------ Java is Free?
Is Java Completely Free or it might be possible that at a certain point, when I need some component or library,
multi-machine webserver, performance or security for high-traffic I will see "buy now" instead of "download now"?
For what they may "ask for money"? and what are the disavantages if I can't buy?
For example, "Java System Application Server Standard Edition 8.1 2005Q1" and
"Java System Application Server Enterprise Edition 8.1 2005Q1" cost $2.000 and $10.000 respectively. That is money.
(http://www.sun.com/software/products/appsrvr/index.xml). What are the disavantages if stick to the free edition?
Features like (from sun site)
Standard Edition:
Extends the capabilities of the Platform Edition to provide secure, remote, multi-instance, multi-machine management.
It is aimed at high-volume applications and Web services.
Enterprise Edition:
Further extends the capabilities of the Standard Edition to provide continuous availablity for applications and
Web services. It is aimed at business critical, high value applications and Web services.
Suppose I achive lots of traffic and I keep the free platform edition.
I won't be able to have a multi-machine webserver set up correctly?
What are the drawbacks? How big are the performance penalties?
------ Technologies Availability
Finnaly, I have the idea (I don't know if it's accurate) that there are Sun versions and Open-Source Free versions
of doing or supporting the same Java related thing.
Despite the way I choose to set up a Java webserver, I will always have all J2EE techonolies like:
Java API for XML-Based RPC (JAX-RPC), JavaServer Pages, Java Servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans components,
J2EE Connector Architecture, J2EE Management Model, J2EE Deployment API, Java Management Extensions (JMX),
J2EE Authorization Contract for Containers, Java API for XML Registries (JAXR), Java Message Service (JMS),
Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI), Java Transaction API (JTA), CORBA, and JDBC data access API.
I really appreciate some help. I could learn the basics of all this "stuff" before asking. But the point why I'm asking
is precisely not starting to learn something I may won't use. Obviously, I will have to make a lot of reading during maybe
months before writing the first line of code of my projects, but being certain that it will fit my needs.
I will be very thankful if you can enlightme in my fedora/redhat, setup, free/cost and technologies avaibility issues.
Thanks Beforehand,
Pedro VazApache is a free Web-server.
Tomcat is a servlet (and JSP) container. It can be stand-alone or can be used together with a Web server (like Apache).
J2EE's scope is much wider than the servlet stuff, but a standalone Tomcat is a good starting point to servlets and JSP.
One of our "real-world" applications is run by a standalone Tomcat using POI and Velocity. I did not regret this architectural decision. -
