Cost of Navigation Use Nokia Maps

Hi there,
I am a proud owner of a Nokia 5800 and I am trying to understand the way navigation works. Ik have a question about using Nokia Maps. The question is about the costs.
I can find 4 options of positioning:
- Assisted GPS
- Integrated GPS
- Bluetooth GPS
- based on network
I don't use Bluetooth GPS. I have checked Integrated GPS. Because I do not have a data subscription I would like my navigation to be completely free. I know that Assisted GPS does uses data. What I am not able to find on the internet is whether the option "based on network" is free of charges or not.
Can anybody help me out?
Thanks a lot in advance for the answer!
Michel

Hi Michel, this is the response I recently received to my 'cost' enquiry - navigating on Ovi maps is  free of charge. However, once you start to search for a place, computing for your exact location this will be the time that you will be charged by your network provider because of data transfer, i.e. whether you use the OVI on the computer or use your mobile out and about  it ain't for free!  Bundchen
You were given false information.
Points Of Interest and Places can be looked up 100% free. Rather, it's some basic settings in each phone that need to be disabled to be used 100% free of network costs.

The GPS chips in phones are usually very insensitive, so they have to use these silly tricks to make them work better. Disabling these 'silly tricks' will definitely stop them but a bluetooth GPS unit for your phone doesn't need these tricks (and neither do dedicated GPS units) because they have great sensitivity and just communicate with the GPS satellites as they should, quickly and reliably.
That being said, switching to Satellite or Terrain map views in the software will request internet access, as will other features. Ignoring these things and just using the software as a regular GPS unit will allow you to use the maps and navigation and address and points-of-interest look-up without any costs whatsoever. So even if you are pre-paid, you won't get a cent taken from you.
The major problem is the poor GPS in phones being reliant on these extra features that use the network.

  • How to use Nokia maps

    Hi,
I have Nokia 7510 Supernova Model, I would like to know how to use Nokia maps in it. I tried using Navicore Extenal Bluetooth ( Wayfinder), but i couldnt use it. Is there any way to use maps in Nokia.

    Hi mdmalik
Provided this isn't a typographic error for 7610 Supernova, unfortunately you cannot use Nokia Maps on your S40 device. You could use application such as Nav4All although you would need to download data with asscociated costs:http://www.nav4all.com/site2/www.nav4all.com/index.php

How much does it cost to run? does it deppend on network?
or ammount of data used, why does it try to download the mao when its already downloaded from Nokia?
Its mad, I can get a satelite to lock in,and even try to plan routes , but it constantly crashes out, its useless , its a shame!! I paid all that money and I cant use the GPS at all anyone else feel the same??

and it all now works until you need it ! i'll explain later.
    SIMPLE MISATKES!:
Make sure you have the memeory card inserted before the install of MAPS 2.02!
Make sure your phones Profile is on GENERAL after restoring your backup after upgrading your firmware. Now MAPS 2.02 should load.
after all this I had to reinstal Nokia Internet Radio Youtube, Fring, AND I installed GOOGLE MOBILE MAPS with a 800kb download over GPRS and it's amazing! need to see a thread dedicated to Google Mobile Maps!
MAPS 2.02 First off Im very impressed with the new version of MAPS and all its features until you NEED certain things!
NO MORE ATMS or CASHMACHINES show up, NO MORE WIFI POINTS!!
how do I fix this?? is this the EXTRAS WE HAVE TO PAY FOR?
Now I'm in town and I'm dettermind to actualy get a fix and use this thing in town under stress of busy traffic and a busy crowd test! I got a FIX with the Red Icon showing and I looked up a shop and hit go and up pops another box saying The Licence blah blah whats going on?? it always tries to charge me at the most inconvienient time ever!
I have no idea if I have to subscribe or get billed off my network?
I have NEVER been able to figure out MAPS :/ like how is it charged? how you subscribe to it? would I need web n walk or surf for a £1 all day on O2 would this help? Its useless otherwise i'm totally perplexed with it. ROute 66 is £59 you install it , it works. or £99 TomTOm 1 Solid State, slim portable, big touch screen, so if after all this setting up time and hassle with MAPS 2 how much will it cost me?

  • Memory Full on using Nokia Maps v3.06

Of late post the latest firmware update, Nokia Maps is annoying me very much with "Memory Full. Close some applications" error message when I keep driving only within about 5 minutes of initiating the navigation. When I intitate the application, I have about 48MB of free RAM on my N97 Mini which is very quickly consumed by maps. This is too irritating when you're driving and especially when you're in a new place where you need a lot of assistance from GPS. Loat hopes in Nokia and Symbian these days due to multiple problems... Have tried factory reset/full format etc., but no go. Any help?

I agree with the fact that Nokia maps is very (too?) sensitive for RAM problems. Ater using Nokia maps to my satisfaction during my holiday in Australia (where we hired a campervan for 3 weeks), for the last month it was hardly possible to start the application (let alone to calculate a route) without getting memory problems. On the last trip where I used Nokia maps, I had to press OK after a low memory message from the phone for about 30 times WHILE driving to keep the navigation working. The message seemed to appear mostly on busy parts of the route like highway crossings.
It took me a while to solve these problems and now Nokia maps seems to work OK again, at least on short trips. I did tried one longer trip (170 km) and it seemed to work OK too.
    What did I do?
    1. I uninstalled all apps that I don't really use / need to free up phone memory and RAM. This includes Nokia email, which takes a lot of phone memory. Instead I installed a 3rd party email app (Profimail) which can save alle messages on the memorycard AND download complete messages (no Nokia app on my C5-03 can do that!).
    2. I installed an app (PhoNetInfo) that can monitor RAM usage (and a lot of other things) to see which remaining apps use a lot of memory. You have to pay for the most recent version, but the version before that is free on their website.
    3. It turned out that Whatsapp doesn't only use a lot of phone memory (6 MB), but also a lot of RAM. I uninstalled it although I used it occasionally and I liked it.
    4. After this I had about 40MB of RAM free (and also 40 MB of phone memory) after starting my phone. (No apps loading on startup)
    5. With the "memory app" PhoNetInfo loaded, I started Nokia apps a few times, calculating a route,  to see what happened to my RAM. It seems to be about optimal in my situation to set the "Maximum memory used" slider to 20% (!). This way, my phone has about 10 MB of RAM free with Nokia maps running. You can find this slider in the Nokia Map options under Map.
    6. From that moment on, I always reset my phone before using Nokia maps. Simply to make sure that the maximum of memory will be free.
So far, it doesn't seem to make much difference for the RAM usage whether you use "extra" options like assisted GPS or traffic information. I am definitely going to try the "app killer". This may work instead of resetting my phone every time before I start navigating.

  • Using Nokia Maps favorites into Nokia Drive

    Hello everyone,
is there a way to use my Nokia maps favorites into Nokia drive ?, i don't understand why we don't still have that option in a menu somewhere already.
    Thank you for your help

Which lumia have you got? If you have a wp8 device and the latest Nokia Maps update you should be able to access your favourites using Nokia Maps and navigate from there which will automatically start Nokia Drve.

  • E90 Using Nokia Maps without using Data from mobil...

Is it possible to use the integrated GPS in the E90 with Nokia Maps WITHOUT connecting through mobile data and incurring data cost? Is there any other 3rd party GPS navigation software that would work like Nokia Maps, using stored maps et al, so you do not have to constantly download maps via your service provider, AND give you navigation instructions? As I understand, one has to pay for the "navigation" part of Nokia Maps.
If I am totally out to lunch, would someone please correct me? Thanks!

  • Navigation with Nokia Maps crash (N95 8Gb)

    Hi All.
Does anyone have this problem, when the Nokia Maps start Navigation and is calculation route, Crash !
    Thanks,

Here's my brand new, maps crashing issue; For some bizzare reason, I thought I'd try to use a-gps. I've always had pretty good luck with the thing syncing but it could be better.
I recently came to Germany and got a MOBI (vodafone) sim card and I set vodafone live as my provider. It didn't seem to be any faster so I went into setting, (in maps) and tried to turn it off.
The problem is; I can't. When I go into Maps settings and click on Network, it shuts off Maps or reboots the phone. Now, whenever I turn on maps, it logs onto vodafone and burns off all of my credit in about 5 minutes...and I can't turn it off and I can't use maps without using all of my expensive credit.
It's really **bleep** me off. This is the first software issue I've had with this thing and I have no idea how to solve it. I've gone into Tools>General>Positioning methods and only have Integrated gps checked but it's still logging on.
It's a real pain. If I could remember my lock code, I'd reset everything to default.
    Any idea...?
    Thanks

  • Using Nokia Map Loader With the E65

I bought an E65 not long ago, and I've been trying to figure out the Navigator program for some time now.
I've been told that the E65 navigator is an integrated version of Nokia Maps, but I can't get Nokia map loader to recognise that there's a removable storage card plugged into the computer (both an SD card in a card reader, and my E65 in data transfer mode.).
I don't want to use it as a full blown navigator, just as a way to view road maps on the go, so my choice of programs is limited to just Nokia Maps.
Is there a way to make Nokia Map Loader recognise the card? I've used both versions 1.0w and 1.1g but both tell me that there are no cards connected to the computer.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi lordjaffa
Have you run Nokia Maps application on your E65 at least once with memory card in phone, to define folder structure required by Maploader on it?

  • Using Nokia Maps

    Howdy,
I'm trying to use the Maps application but have a few questions and not the patience to read the user guide on my tiny 700's screen. Any help you may proffer would be much appreciated. So, how do I map a route from, say, point A to point B? Is it possible to use the app's GPS function without a connection to a mobile network? By the way, I fully intend to NOT use a mobile network for data, just for phone calls. I've toyed with it a bit and even downloaded a map (Canada) and deleted a couple (Cayman Islands and Bahamas).
It just doesn't make sense that it's not intuitive to the point where I can enter where I would like to start and where I'm going and get directions without having it access my mobile network.

    Hi Aspergerguy,
As to navigation in general I'm not so interested in the features a certain navigation software package will provide. I don't care whether I can see weather forecasts or not. The main topic for me is the reliability of the map data. In other words, in how far is or are the roadmap(s) in concert with the actual situation. The Navteq maps are seriously out of date for my country the Netherlands. It is nice to know that the weather in the environment of an address in The Haque is rainy, but I'm more interested in to reach that address correctly. Recently I updated the Teleatlas maps for the TomTom device of my girlfriend and the Dutch map was really up to date. My Nokia maps are more than a year out of date. If this phenomenon is not altered, I will say Nokia/OVI maps goodbye. Do you have any inside information about the frequency and dates of updating Navteq maps in the course of the year for Nokia phones?

  • N95 v21.0.016 after using Nokia Maps 2.0 Beta on v...

After updating software Nokia Maps returns to v1.2 wk48 b01 and of course maps in E:/Cities need to be deleted and old maps downloaded using Maploader v1.3 after running Nokia Maps to define folder structure. However on a microSDHC with 708.5Mb space left for maps(Maploader definition) it allows me to download and install a 20Mb map but after downloading a further 120Mb map it won't let it install with the message "Your local drive might be full or your access rights are insufficient".
This is of course great news when you've wasted about an hour downloading it!

    Hi harrykaa
Essentially so that I am aware of the problems (if any) experienced by users of N95 with the version of Nokia Maps pre-installed in v21.0.016
The answer to my problem was to replace the existing "diskcache" folder in "Cities" with one I found on an older memory card, just wish I had thought of this solution sooner.

    Hi knownothing
Last version of Nokia Maps v2.0_4503 here:http://europe.nokia.com/A4984199
Latest version of Nokia Maploader allows you to connect both in default PC Suite mode and Data transfer mode so don't get Windows warning for removing USB mass storage device and more options of Maps, Voices and Store available in Maploader.
If you into Connectivity > USB > USB mode - choice of four connection modes.

  • Costs of Nokia Maps Navigation

License costs for Drive (turn-by-turn) UK navigation using Nokia Maps (v3) appears to be €6.49 per 30 days, or €59 for 12 months. Yet you can buy symbian versions of third-party GPS nabvigation software (e.g. Garmin XT or Navigon MobileNavigator) for a one off cost of around £60.
Probably I am missing something here  ... is there a need to pay subscriptions on Garmin/Navigon, or is using Nokia Maps just a very expensive option?

I guess that this another case of 'horses for courses'  ...
the Nokia maps model is very flexible, if as in timppu's example, you use a 30-day license to cover driving on vacation etc. However it seems that third-party approaches might be cheaper for longer-term intermittent use, if one is prepared not regularly purchase updated maps from Garmin (or whoever) and drive on last years maps.
On reflection my needs for SatNav turn-by-turn driving instructions are so occasional and intermittent that I might do better to buy daily or monthly licenses as required.
    Many thanks for your comments

  • Nokia Maps Navigation Charges

Nokia/Ovi Maps is now completely free for some the latest models. Click this link for the list of phones with free navigation.
For the older and unsupported models, charges are as follows:
Firstly there is no charge to use nokia maps to locate you position and to download any maps you want. So all map updates are absolutely free.
You will however have to pay for navigation if you wish to get turn by turn instructions. There are various rates for navigation. You can buy a single country or regions (eg. western Europe) for different durations such as a week, a month, a year etc.
Since March 2010 navigation licenses are now only available for regions only and regional license charges have been substantially reduced to a very reasonable €9.99 for a 1 year license, and for those short breaks and holiday abroad, you could get the 1 month license for the region you are visiting for €1.99. These are approximate prices and do vary a little between the various regions.
    Also see
    http://europe.nokia.com/support/search?comp=Maps%2C+Nokia+Here+and+Now&cat=support&page=1&qt=costs&c...
There could also be associated network charges if you choose to go online and use AGPS when navigating. Network charges can be avoided by pre-loading your required map data to your phone using Nokia Map Loader or Ovi Suite and disabling Assisted GPS and network based.

Licences are now 30 and 90 days plus a full year, I believe this is effective from Maps 2.0 onwards.

  • Why is Nokia Maps costing me money when I log on.

    Hi,
I am having some trouble understanding a few things.
I am in Australia and i just bought a new N85 outright and i am using it with my Optus pre-paid sim card. This phone came with Nokia Maps already loaded.
Now Nokia Maps is one reason why I bough this phone. I understand that using the turn by turn navigation will involve paying a fee and downloading maps online will involve internet charges.
But i am using nokia maps in the offline mode and the only thing i do is ask for my position and search for other streets i am looking for.
Now the problem I am having is that even though i am in offline mode and it still says that i have used 0.0Kb, every time I select Nokia Maps and them log off again and i check my balance it has used somewhere between $1.00 and $4.00 of my credit. even when I dont do anything.
I am not sure where I am going wrong or what I am eing charged for, as i thought in the offline mode not connected to the internet it would be free to just use GPS and search for streets around.
Please help at I have used $40.00 in the last few days logging on and off trying to change settings to see if that fixes the problem.
    thanks a lot
