Cost to resurrect iMac DV?

i have read the suggested work-arounds to resurrect a dead iMac CRT (caused by not doing firmware upgrade prior to OS X upgrade). i'm not sure if i have the skills necessary to do this myself. has anyone had their dead iMac to a certified apple tech for this repair? if so, how much did it cost? i'm trying to decide whether this will be worth the time/effort/$.
thanks!

This is relatively easy to do and should not cost agreat deal. You will need to be able to hook your computer up to an external monitor. Then you will need to install the firmware update before installing OS X.

Anybody know the likely cost of replacing a dead hard disk, 1 TB, in a 2010 27inch iMac?

  • Worth Resurrecting iMac G5?

Looking for helpful opinions and recommendations.
I have an iMac G5 Power PC with 2 gbs of RAM (pre-iSight) that recently crapped out on me with the the dreaded Error 36 Kernel Panic when trying to boot up.
I took the machine to MacAuthority for repair. The technician said it was bad news. The problem is a capacitor had leaked on the logic board. It would be possible to replace the logic board (for what I believe was in the neighborhood of $500) but he recommended I not do it. His reasons were that:
1.this machine would never be able to be upgraded from Tiger
    and
    2. the new logic board would only have a 90 day warranty. Something else could go wrong with the aging machine causing to spend even more in repair than the machine is worth.
Since I used the iMac G5 for business, I went ahead and replaced it with a new iMac 27" with an i7 processor and 8 gbs of RAM, but my question is what to do with the old iMac G5?
    I see my alternatives as:
    1. Sell off the iMac piece-meal (sticks of RAM, super drive etc) and recycle the rest. If so, what parts can be removed and sold separately?
    or
    2. Seek a cheaper way to repair the machine. Any ideas how to do that?
    Appreciate any input.

    Hey David,
    neighborhood of $500
    That's a pretty expensive neighborhood:
    http://www.dttservice.com/imacg5.html
I had a client of mine send his there. It was a 20" ALS and it's been running great for 2 years not. Only thing was the power supply died and I replaced it for $80.
this machine would never be able to be upgraded from Tiger
Huh!? All mine are running Leopard just fine.
    90 day warranty
    Six month warranty at DT&T.
    recycle the rest
Ohh before you did that I'd hope you consider donating it:

Otherwise that DT&T quote is close to half the MacAuthority price.

  • A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.
If you want to know what issues have me concerned take a look at just this one forum:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/adobe-cs-apps-mountain-lion-no-known-issues.html
Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
    Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.
Well, those are all of my questions at the moment. To anyone who made it this far in my looooong post, Thank You so much for your time. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and hope that you can help me make this decision.
    Cheers,
    Alex Bogdan

    Alex,
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
    Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
              You can get:-
3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
Of course such a model will cost you more.
In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
Again only you will know the answer to that.
    Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
    Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
You would need to contact Adobe about that.
    Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
Here is something that you may want to know:-
Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
              However here is the point:-
Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support
    Personal Comment:-
It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
Hope all of that goes some way to answering your questions.

  • 24" iMac Hum is Gone

I woke up today and my brightness was all the way up...i use my iMac with the brightness at its max setting all the time, but right after i wake up it's too bright.
My room is very quiet in the morning, and i noticed right away that there was no hum when i turned the brightness all the way down. The computer was on all night, just the display was sleeping, and my CPU is about 98-100 degrees F.
I wonder if it depends at all on the temperature? I am sure the hum will return, but for the last 10 minutes on the lowest brightness setting possible it's definitely not humming.

I have a similar machine and had this same problem. The hum was corrected by contacting Apple and then leaving the machine with the local service shop for about 10 days. The solution was drastic for a machine less than 3 weeks old - replacement of the display panel along with associated inverter. Strongly recommended that you contact Apple as if the hum points to an inverter problem at some point it is likely to cause other issues and then ...
This appears to be a problem that will not just go away and the before/after noise levels associated with display brightness changes are significant. My concern was what if there was a problem, caused by the inverter, outside of warranty then what would be the repair cost?

How do I fix an iMac that automatically ejects disks without reading them?
Have tried resetting the SMC, didn't work.
If I have to get a new drive, how much do they cost on an iMac and where do I get it fixed?
Very disappointed if we have to spend money to fix computer as we have not had this computer for a very long time and we bought a Mac because it was supposed to be better.

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

  • Imac or emac to choose for next mac

Hey everyone , I'm going to be looking for a newer mac soon and I have been looking on ebay a lot and cost wise an emac (700-1 ghz ) isn't much more and sometimes the same cost as a imac 500-700mhz) I'm looking and other than the speed differance wich would be a better buy . I love my imac and I don't realy play many games other than what you get on the web , but I see I need something ,more powerful when I watch Utube on my wifes 400 imac and it is seemless but mine choppy also needing DV ports for my camcorder .Need input on anything inherit with the emac I should look out for or would sticking with the trusty imac be better . Thanks

"...kinda like the differance between a 49 Mercury and a 05 Mustang both look stunning in their own way and both will do the same thing only the Mustang will get you their faster but the Mercury get's you their with style."
I like that analogy! Another good reason to keep my Blueberry iMac running, plus it makes a really cool alarm clock. I set the energy saver to turn on when I want to wake up and awake to the "bong".

  • Hello, what type of card do i need to buy an imac? i am from Romania, Europe.

an master card or visa electron is good enough?thanks.

Should be OK, but it depends if your debit card has a daily spending limit and whether that is less than the cost of the iMac.

  • Anyone know where I can buy the power cord for intel imac

i lost the power wire to my imac and i don't know  where to buy it
anyone know where can I get it  and how much it costs?

Newer iMacs use ordinary computer power cords commonly used on all sorts of electronic equipment.
The power cord used on G5 iMacs (I think) is different but is also readily available. Either one will cost you less than $10.

  • Non functioning iMac -- Update

    Hi,
I wrote earlier about my iMac behaving strangely over the past several days, and finally getting to the point where it wouldn't turn on. But I could hear the motor sound that occurs just before the chime (but no chime).
Went to Genius bar this a.m. and it turned on. Back home, ran disk repair and the utility did find a problem with hard drive. Repaired it.
So I thought things might be okay.
Later today, I left for a couple of hours. Came back. iMac asleep. Tried to wake it. It kept dozing. Then I believe it turned itself off.
Tried repeatedly to turn it on. What I heard distinctly was the motor sound but no chime. This motor sound repeated itself 3 to 4 times after I pressed the button. Then the full cycle of this sound diminished to just a faint "effort". This repeated itself over again many times. Then nothing.
(When I had gotten home, I did a full backup with Time Machine. So that's okay.)
Before I lug it back to ApSt, does this behavior ring a bell for anyone. Can you share anything about what I'm looking at, in for? What is causing this behavior? Is it simply a failing hard drive? Could that affect the "ignition"?
    Thanks for any insight.

This a.m tried turning iMac on and it worked. So I was able to do the PRAM reset.
    Worked fine.
I left for a while. It went to sleep and never woke up.
Is that the hard drive? I'm taking back to Genius bar to get a new one.
I guess I'm just trying to pinpoint what the problem is, if anyone out there knows. Could it be something beyond the hard drive? In addition to hard drive?
Don't want to buy a new hard drive if something else is at the root of the problem. Then find out it's a lot more money. So goal is to weigh those costs against cost of new iMac.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Any internal hard drive upgrades available for iMac?

I have a 19 Gigabyte hard drive in my Imac running OS 10.4.11 and would like more storage. Is there a larger internal hard drive available from Apple or anyone else and at what approximate cost?

Your iMac uses the same 3.5" IDE/EIDE, Parallel ATA (PATA) - not Serial ATA (SATA), hard drives that are used in PCs. The onboard IDE controller will not recognize a capacity larger than 128 GBs, so any standard drive that's larger than that (160 GBs ->) will have unused capacity. A 120 GB drive was the optimal drive to install, but many manufacturers have discontinued that size. You should be able to find a 160 GB drive at any electronics, office supply, or computer store in your area, or you can check online retailers (like newegg.com) for a comparable drive. As an example, Micro Center is selling the Western Digital 160 GB (PATA) drive for $55. Seagate's drives are also a good choice, because of their 5-year warranty. After installing the drive, you should boot the iMac from the Tiger installer disk and use Disk Utility to format the new drive as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. You can also partition the drive into multiple volumes, if desired. This Macworld article will provide useful directions for opening up the iMac's lower housing and replacing the hard drive. As an alternative to replacing the internal hard drive, you could connect a FireWire external hard drive. The FireWire-connected drive wouldn't be subject to the 128 GB limitation, so you'd be able to use a mega-sized drive.

  • I have problem with scratch on glass screen of Alu iMac (mid 2007)

I was accidently to clean it with kleenex and found glass screen were scratch then tried clean with apple cloth and found scratch on screen, I did called Apple to make appt for Genius Bar but want know if would fix the scratch on glass screen? How would cost?
My iMac is still under 1 year warranty and after 14 days of bought from retail.

Was the scratch there when you bought the machine or did you make the scratch?
If you made the scratch then Apple will not repair it under warranty as it is not their fault.
If it was there when you bought it then you will need to convince Apple and they may replace the glass for you. Otherwise you will need to buy a new front glass yourself.

  • Looking for mini or 24 imac

I can not decide on purchasing a mini with a Mac display or just by the 24in I mac
Any advantages or not by going with a mini. I think the mini is not as strong of a system, but you can get a better monitor this way. Please post your opinions.

There is certainly nothing wrong with buying a Mac mini. It's a remarkably powerful system despite the diminutive size, and like the iMac, it has plenty of potential for external expansion but little (well, indeed none when it comes to the mini) internal expansion options. However, as an entry level system the mini is really intended as a stepping stone - a means to get into MacOS, or get a reasonably powerful MacOS system, at reasonably low cost whereas the iMac is more akin to the system to step up to after the mini.
The reason is pretty simple - the iMac has a faster processor, faster hard drive, larger hard drive, is faster overall in handling data, has potential for larger RAM, has a dedicated video processor with it's own video RAM rather than on-board graphics with shared memory, can drive not only the internal display but also a second one either as a mirror or spanning across the two, it has FW 800 as well as FW 400, a built-in iSight camera and mic and 802.11n compatibility. Where basically the mini is a laptop with display, keyboard and trackpad removed, the iMac is a desktop.
None of these factors make the mini a bad system or a poor choice, but they do make the iMac a great system and a good choice if your budget goes that high and your interests are in obtaining a system capable of delivering considerable power to meet not only present needs, but also potential future ones.
I would also not place a great deal of emphasis on reports of problems with iMac models, because while it's certainly the case that there have been some display anomalies - and as a G5 iMac owner you very likely came across the early 'mid-plane' issues with those systems - the problem units don't affect models which are free from defects. As obvious as that sounds, it points to the simple fact that you need to buy the system that most closely matches your needs, not which fail to work for others. When you buy what you need, check it carefully and hold Apple accountable if it proves to be defective in any way.

  • IMac portability questions....

The iMac REALLY appeals to me, but it's a toss up between the MB Pro and the iMac. I love the portability of the MBP, but the iMac also seems really portable as well (to some degree). I go on vacation a few times per year and really want something I can carry & use in my hotel rooms etc...
    1. Anyone knows how much "the total iMac package" weighs? (The newest iMac.)
    2. Does anyone out there sell a sturdy carrying case for it, used for travelling with it, etc... (in case I want to bring it on a business trip, etc...)?
    3. Can I use my existing Dell 1704FPT flat screen monitor as 2nd monitor to the iMac, like a dual screen setup? How about 3 screen support?
If I can overcome this portability issue then I'm tempted to purchase one!
    Thanks y'all!

    (1) Per specs on Apple's website, 20" weighs 20 pounds and the 24" weighs 25.4 pounds.
    (2) Do a search on the iLugger, a decent bag for the iMac. Runs around $100+ last I checked.
    (3) You should be able to use any external monitor, LCD flatscreen or even CRT, as long as it has a DVI or VGA input (which most do). You will need to buy the appropriate mini-DVI to DVI adapter, or mini-DVI to VGA adapter from Apple for about $20 each. You can only connect one external display to the iMac, so cannot run two external monitors as there is only one display output on the iMac.
Personally, if your travel with the iMac is less than 5 times a year and you can easliy take the iMac along when you go, I would go for the iMac. I used to own a black MacBook, but my Mac sits at my desk 98% of the time, so I opted to sell the MacBook and get a 17" white iMac on closeout, for less than what I got for my MacBook on ebay! The larger screen/greater storage/better ergonomics of the iMac at less cost makes the iMac a lot nicer computer to work on.
    Good luck with your decision.

  • Help with setting up Aperture on Snow Leopard

I have two late 2006 White Core 2 Duo iMacs no longer under warranty. My cameras are 2 Nikon D70's. My printer is an Epson 7600.
I installed Leopard on one of the iMacs and it broke within a week of the upgrade. Our homeowners insurance may repair it ... Shipped it today and waiting for diagnosis. (Rural, no Apple Store)
I want to install Snow Leopard on the other one but I am terrified! Is my machine really up to the task? I know that it is; based on the specs but does anyone have experiences with it? My Aperture Library houses my most precious data.
•Can I install it on an external hard drive and test it with my Aperture Library and then go back to Tiger if it has problems re-booting or starts running too hot?
I want this to be a joyful experience but this is the 3rd mac that has failed me since 2003 and frankly I am scared. 15" PowerBook, iMac G5, Intel iMac.
I have External Hard Drives that are from OWC. I have two 1TB and one 1.5TB and they are FW800 + eSATA. My computer does not have a place to plug in the eSATA cords so I am using the FW800 ones. Should I consider a RAID 5 for redundancy given my luck? I also have five 500GB Mercury Elite drives but they're FW400 only.
•Can one of those be used for speed (RAID 0)? They're empty but maybe too slow.
    • If they replace rather than repair the iMac; can you recommend a more robust machine with near equal value? MBP (refurb). I'd need a matte screen or an anti-glare cover.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Kathleen S wrote:

We don't know what the graphics card is on your iMac, but my expectation is that the iMac should not be particularly limiting to low end use of Snow Leopard, except a bit for the graphics. However the iMac graphics will be limiting to Aperture, as also will be the limited RAM. The described iMac setup will never be a high end Aperture box but with maximum RAM should be ok as a low end Aperture box.
My Aperture Library houses my most precious data.
The iMac itself is no risk to precious data. IMO your data (originals) should be Referenced Masters housed on external hard drives and backed up off site separately but along with Vaults of the Aperture Library. Aperture's default "Managed Masters" Library usually is a very bad idea for iMacs and laptops. I do wish Apple would change the IMO inappropriate default protocol.
Can I install it on an external hard drive and test it with my Aperture Library and then go back to Tiger if it has problems re-booting or starts running too hot?
Better is to install Aperture, the Aperture Library and other apps on the iMac internal drive and keep the internal drive less than 60% full by using Referenced Masters housed on external hard drives. Make two different Vaults on two different hard drives and test rebuilding from the Vault. Then if the Snow Leopard install does not work well you can wipe the iMac drive and start over. However I think that SL should be OK on the iMac, it works fine with Aperture on my 2006 2.33 GHz MBP with 3 GB RAM.
I want this to be a joyful experience but this is the 3rd mac that has failed me since 2003 and frankly I am scared. 15" PowerBook, iMac G5, Intel iMac.
Computers and especially drives of any brand always do fail. Establish the right setup and routine backup and failures become not so terrifying.
I have External Hard Drives that are from OWC. I have two 1TB and one 1.5TB and they are FW800 + eSATA. My computer does not have a place to plug in the eSATA cords so I am using the FW800 ones. Should I consider a RAID 5 for redundancy given my luck?
No to RAID but yes yes yes to redundancy . With images we have no need for expensive real-time backup, and iMacs are unsuited to RAID anyway. What we need with images is immediate backup of our originals (such as simple copying to external drives) and routine daily/weekly backup of originals (via Finder-copy) and the Aperture Library (via Vaults) both on and off site. That is easy enough to do with the drives you have now.
Can one of those be used for speed (RAID 0)?
No. RAID 0 is great for images work but you would need a tower or an elaborate eSATA configuration. Note that RAID 0 requires a minimum of two drives for the RAID plus backup drives.
If they replace rather than repair the iMac; can you recommend a more robust machine with near equal value? MBP (refurb). I'd need a matte screen or an anti-glare cover.
An MBP would have substantially more cost and value. iMacs all have only the (IMO undesirable) glossy displays. A latest-generation Mini would meet your described needs, or an iMac plus an external matte display.
    Good luck!
