Costco QuickUpload tool broken with Safari 3
Hi, ever since Safari 3 was installed, the Costco QuickUpload tool to send pictures to Costco for printing is broken. Pictures can be selected, but when Upload is clicked, nothing happens forever. Pictures have to be slow uploaded, selected one at a time, 12 in a group. Anybody find a fix for this? Anybody else having this problem?
Costco came out with a new plug-in. This works with Safari 3.

About Flashback malware
Back up all data, if you haven't already done so.
Select ▹ Software Update to install the latest Java update (if Java is already installed) or the Flashback malware removal tool (if Java is not installed under Lion), as well as any other available updates. Installing either of those items should clear the infection in most cases. You must update to the latest version of Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7 before you can install the Java update.
The removal tool runs automatically in the background and is then deleted. Don’t look for something to click. If the malware is removed, you’ll be notified.
After you’ve secured your system — not before — change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords, and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. -
Laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0
today I just updated the system and my laptop runs dramatically hotter after that. I read the archwiki, it does talk about the laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0 but when I opened the file /usr/sbin/laptop_mode, the lines which the wiki mentions are not there. Does anyone here have the same problem and can you offer the solution?
Here is my /usr/sbin/laptop_mode
#! /bin/sh
# Script to start or stop laptop_mode, and to control various settings of the
# kernel, hardware etc. that influence power consumption.
# This script is a part of Laptop Mode Tools. If you are running a supported
# power management daemon, this script will be automatically called on power
# state change.
# Configure laptop mode tools in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf, and in
# the broken-out config files in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d.
# Please consult the manual pages laptop-mode.conf(8) and laptop_mode(8) for
# additional information.

# This is a 2 phase locking approach. LMT_REQ_LOCK is the outer lock and LMT_INVOC_LOCK is the inner lock
# We take this approach to ensure the scenario that, "At any point when an event occurs (AC/BATT), the
# kernel can generate multiple events spanning over a couple of events. The first event is honored and
# lmt executes. If the last event triggered at the 9th second, there is a fair chance that a good amount
# of state change would have occured in the OS, to honor that state, we keep an outer lock (LMT_REQ_LOCK)
# handy, so that those changes can also be applied and not forgotten.
# Workflow:
# Event-1 is generated and lmt executes (lmt runtime could span 5-10 seconds)
# At seventh second, 4 events generate. But Event-1 is still running.
# We don't want to discard all the remaining 4 events, but at least honor 1 so that we can act to the changes
# that occured in the last 7 seconds.
# So, Event-2 acquire LMT_REQ_LOCK and waits to acquire LMT_INVOC_LOCK (which is acquire by Event-1)

esacI had the problem but edited the line in /usr/sbin/laptop_mode and it worked. But thoes lines are not there anymore. I guess they changed it at the recent update of laptop-mode-tools.
Regarding your heat problem; is there any other thing you use to cut down power usage (from AUR maybe)? I use acpi_call from AUR had to edit lines there aswell, but it should be updated by now. -
My wife has been having problems with Safari, and many third party software and malware programs infecting her Mac Book Pro. I have tried to reset Safari but it keeps coming back, taking over Safari, changing defaults, start pages, and search engines, Etc.
Is it safe to use programs like MacKeeper, who keeps send my wife's computer message and alerts, or should I just wipe the drive and start over?
SkipI am having lot's of lag time with Safari, etc..
I'll type in a website.. and it will take 15-20 seconds to start..

I am running OS X, version 10.6.8 with safari 5.0.5. recently i ran one of those recommended upgrades and now Safari continually quits citing .WinASOEasyTweakVKey.Gen.tmp plug-in. how in the world do i combat this issue? thank you! I have reset Safari several times.
Another new problem is Firefox telling me, when the e-mail window is open, that the window must run in 32 bit. The window is then disabled and then i have to restart Firefox.
Thank You for any help/hope you can give me with these issues. deborahYou’ve been infected with the “Flashback” malware. See this Apple support document:
About Flashback malware
Back up all data, if you haven't already done so.
From the menu bar, select
▹ Software Update
to install the latest Java update, as well as any other available updates. That should clear the infection in most cases. You must update to the latest version of OS X 10.6 or 10.7 before you can install the Java update.
The removal tool runs automatically in the background and is then deleted. Don’t look for something to click. If the malware is removed, you’ll be notified.
After you’ve secured your system — not before — change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords, and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. -
tried re-installing firefox and the flash plugins. set all the setting in the applications preferences to prompt(no prompts received), tried disabling all the plugins expecting messages that plugin in missing or disabled(no message). No problems with Safari.
Actually, I've usually always had this problem with every version of Firefox. Seems like it was fixed for a while, but I worked on it so long I don't remember if or what the fix was. Does anyone know if there is a tool to right-click a link or file and open in another browser so we can view flash videos?

New to Mac and am asking for help with Safari issue.
I have a Mac book Pro and recently upgraded to 'Lion'. I am having an issue with Safari hiding the area to type in a web address, it seems to hide this feature. It also seems to hide the green, Amber (minimize buttin), and Red (close) icons. I need to know how to reset Safari to its oringinal layout. My 'Guest account is fine and have no idea why the settings have changed in my user account. I was told new software for Safari was available and so attempted to download it, which caused the mac to freeze. I rebooted but this software will still not download without freezing up. If anyone has anyway of walking me through this I would be incredibly gratefull.
In Safari it has no 'Show toolbard" A friend of mine already suggested that. It doesnt have that option. I know that sounds odd. In the guest user I have that option but on my account I dont. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer. Do you have any other ideas on what this might be? When you go up to the top and the arrown 'rolls' over the top on the tool bar the address tab drops down, how to i make its stayopen in this posision?

Thanks to Mandeep5062 Acrobat Pro download issue with Safari
Before your response arrived I shut down Safari, loaded Firefox, went directly to the Adobe download page and attempted a download. The download started correctly and then switched over to the Creative Cloud downloader and I thought, "Here we go again". However, the process completed and installed the Acrobat Pro software as advertised. This might be a work around others can use that are having issues with Safari.
Win 7 either comes with a virtural XP machine installed, or it's freelly availible. I forget which, but this may be a simple solution to your issue.
Here's a link that might help:

Microsoft windows threat of infection warring on my MAC with safari
I am getting this message and not sure why on my mac with safari, i have popup blocker on, this just started a few days ago. Anyone have a reason why i am getting this and how to stop it ?
Your browser is under the threat of infection. windows require your permission to install online protection tool.
Your browser is run in unsafe mode. Running the protection mode will help you keep your computer safe. Staying at the suspicious website is unsafe mode my lead to loss of personal data and computer breakage. To run the web browser in protected mode windows requires installing the certified antivirus scanner software and online protection tool.

Don't AllowWell I've done some more research. It's a trojan/malware. My sister's PC got infected with it last night as well.

Unfortunately most sites are mentioning PC ways to remove it. I've googled some AV/malware programs for Macs, they're pretty scarce. I'm running some on my computer right now. So far only tracker cookies have been found though.

Photoshop: values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard
I posted this in answer to another thread, but decided that it may be helpful to some Photoshop users if it had its own topic:
The following is a technote copied from Adobe's forums, regarding the performance of several menus for key tool settings in Photoshop CS3 running in Leopard:
*Changing values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard*
*Kirsten Harris - 08:58pm Nov 15, 2007 Pacific*
Adobe and Apple are working closely to provide a fix to a known issue running Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended on Mac OS X Leopard (v10.5.1). Currently, when you enter values in numerical fields to set sizes for the brush, crop, marquee, lasso, type, and other Photoshop CS3 tools, those values revert to previously entered values when you try to apply them.
# While we have identified workarounds for some of the affected tools, this issue prevents people from working as precisely and intuitively as they expect. Providing a fix to customers is a top priority. Please note the following: The fix will be provided through an update to Mac OS X Leopard. Consequently, it is not part of the Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) update.
# Apple is collaborating closely with us to get this fix incorporated into a Mac OS X Leopard update. No public schedule is available at this time, but both companies understand the urgency of this fix.
# As soon as the appropriate update to Mac OS X Leopard is available, we will immediately alert our Photoshop users.
Affected Photoshop CS3 tools: Art History tool, Blur tool, Brush tool, Burn tool, Color Replacement tool, Clone tools (all), Crop tool, Dodge tool, Eraser tools (all), Gradient tool, Healing tools (all), History tool, Lasso tools (all), Line tool, Magic Wand tool, Marquee tools (all), Paint Bucket tool, Pencil tool, Polygon tool, Quick Selection tool, Red Eye tool, Rounded Rectangle tool, Sharpen tool, Smudge tool, Sponge tool, Slice tool, Type tool
Workaround for tools with sliders: Instead of typing in a number, use the sliders to change the value.
Workaround for tools with pop-up menus: Enter a value for the size but don’t press Return/Enter to apply the value. Instead, choose it from the top of the Size pop-up menu to commit it.
Workaround for tools which do not have sliders or pop-up menus: For certain tools, such as the Line tool, you may want to set up presets that you can load to set common sizes. Alternatively, you can restart Photoshop CS3 to clear the problem. You will then be able to enter values again. However, the issue typically re-surfaces quickly.
If additional details come to light, our tech doc Values in numerical fields in Photoshop CS3 revert to the previous value in Mac OS X v10.5.1 (Leopard) will be updated.Well, that's interesting! Here I thought the problem with my CS1 was just that it was too old, running in Rosetta and all, and would be fixed when I get my Xmas treat of CS3. Wonder if that means when the fix comes from Apple it will also fix the same problem in CS1? Of course, by then I'll probably have CS3.... Thanks for posting this, I would have been mighty annoyed to have plonked down my 200 bucks only to discover that I had the same bugs.

Wrong forum, but can't access correct one - need help with Safari
I'm sorry to post this here, but the link to the Safari discussion forum is broken - I've tried it about 10 times!
I've been having trouble with Safari 1.3, which quit every time I navigated to a page using a certain type of code (I don't know what it was, maybe Java or Flash?) Anyway, I downloaded the Safari 3 Universal version in the hope of improving it, but unfortunately that has completely killed off both Safari itself and Mail. I couldn't even use Firefox or Internet Explorer, although other programs such as Word and Photoshop were working fine. Trashing Safari and everything I could find related to it meant that Firefox would work (I'm using that now), but I still can't start Mail. I assume Mail needs Safari to be installled in order to work?
I've tried to download Safari 1 again, but can only find links to download the 1.3 Updater, not the program itself. Of course, the Updater won't install because there's no previous version to load it onto. Can anyone help me with a suggestion as to where I go from here, please? I'd be hugely grateful, I don't mind not having Safari but I do really need to use Mail.
Thank you!
- KittyThere are many, many millions of defective, nonstandard web sites, as a brody points out. You could, if you wished, make a crusade of asking their developers to make them accessible in every antique web browser: a crusade for which you would be rewarded with a brody's undying admiration, most of those incompetent website developers' annoyance, and nothing else.
If instead you would rather just visit the sites and see what you can see of them, use Camino or Opera — the only up-to-date browsers that will run in OS X 10.3.9. Mozilla FireFox 2.0.20 will indeed run in your OS version, but it "is no longer supported and contains known security vulnerabilities" according to the Mozilla website. The more recent updates of FireFox (3.0 through 3.0.10) require OS X 10.4 or better. -
Since yesterday, I have encountered a problem with Safari. When first starting up it takes a solid five minutes to actually load my homepage even with full internet service from my wireless connector. Once on Safari, if I want to go a website or fill in a password, after each letter I type the pinwheel comes up on the mouse and I usually have to wait 2 to 3 minutes before I can type the next letter. This problem also arises when scrolling and when going to click on links. At first I didn't think anything of it, but as a college student speed is everything for me and the fact that it takes me a thirty minutes or so to go to 3 websites to check my mail is beginning to frustrate me. This message in general is taking a solid chuck of my time as every few words the pinwheel comes up and I can't do anything on my computer. All other assets are frozen off and the only thing I can do is wait for the mouse to show up again. I don't know what I can possibly do to fix this problem or what is causing it. I've tried restarting and that seems to work briefly, but after about a few clicks on the internet that pinwheel of death appears again. Also, this has spread to my other applications including my word documents and just general searching in the hard drive.
Welcome to the forums!
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
Less likely, but possible, is that the slowness is caused by a Trojan such as the one called 'DNSChanger' or 'OSZ.RSPlug', which can alter the DNS settings of your network connection. This particular Trojan can be inadvertently installed if you have come across certain Quicktime movies where got a window stating that you have to download and install a particular codec in order to see the video.
If you have agreed to that installation, your system can be infected and your DNS settings altered, which results in your system using the wrong DNS servers, which can slow web surfing to a crawl.
This can be fixed by downloading and running a freeware utility called DNSChanger Removal Tool which you can download from here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33696
Once you have run that utility you have to re-boot your Mac, then reset Safari, and re-enter your DNS settings in System Preferences/Network. -
KCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 1 with Safari "user agents"
I am trying to use the different "user agents" to test a web page with Safari in "Developer" mote but I get the above error. I even get it with the following:

Hello World.

The different user agents seemed to work with an earlier version of my site but not anymore. What is broken?
Thanks.I'm having the same problem. Have tried resetting router, reinstalling SOHO Notes on Mac and Notelife on iPhone.
