Could a security update affect how my Time Machine Backup HD operates?

I have a 2010 iMac 27" with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63).  I have a Time Machine External Hard drive backing up my machine.  Yesterday, I had a couple of updates, one a security update, the other updating printer software.
At some point yesterday, I began seeing a block pop stating that my time machine was no longer backing up my computer.  I opened up Time Machine and the images below show what I saw as I navigated through the screen.  Is this a problem with the Apple Security update or the Time Machine?  I was not having problems until after the update ran.
Thanks in advance for your responses.

you can clone your TM drive either using the restore function in disk utility or using a 3rd party cloner like [Superduper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html] or [CCCloner|http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html]. having redundant backups is not crazy and many people do it. However, instead of backing up your TM drive I would recommend using a different backup solution for your secondary backup. aforementioned Superduper and CCCloner are wonderful backup programs and will give you bootable clones of your system which TM does not.

  • How to Time Machine backup iPhoto library stored on external drive

    Hi Mac users.
Can you kindly teach me how to backup iphoto library stored on an external drive to my external time machine drive. My internal drive is full so I moved my iPhoto library to a separate drive and deleted the library to create space. Thank you.

Actually there's nothing to do.  TM backs up all connected volumes automatically.  One has to exclude a volume or folder(s) to keep them from being backed up in the TM preferences.
If you find that the EHD is not being backed up exclude it and the "unexclude" it and force a new backup.

  • How can Time Machine backup automatically when your external hard drive isn't connected?

Everywhere I search, it says that Time Machine will automatically backup every 24 hours and so on.
However, I was wondering - how can these automatic backups take place if you are backing up to an external hard drive which is not always connected?
Is this to say that if you do not connect your external hard drive for a day, no backups will be done that day?
    Thank you

If the drive is not connected then TM pauses until the drive becomes available. Yes, if the drive isn't connected then there are no backups.

  • Can I choose how many Time Machine backups I want?

I have ~ 500 GB dedicated to Time Machine, but now it's telling me that there's not enough space.
I figured out it was doing several backups so I can go back in time when I did my first backup. The thing is, I do not want that. Is there a way to only keep one single backup? (which would be the latest)
If I put something to the trash, then there's a reason why I do. So one backup is really enough, which is also just in case my hard drive fails.
I hope there's a way to set this

It sounds like you have a backup drive that is too small and that you are storing other files on it in addition to Time Machine. Both are virtually guaranteed to cause the problems you descibe. Time Machine needs to have space to work and you aren't giving it the space it needs. External drives are very inexpensive. I suggest getting a new one. There is really no other option.
Sorry, but what you're saying is just wrong.
Why would I buy a new hard drive? I have 3 TB of space on that hard drive, I have made a partition of 500 GB for Time Machine to use and lots of things I'm not backing up because it isn't needed. The solution is not buying a new hard drive, the solution is deleting old backups. I made 100 GB of space this way. I don't need backups that go back a year. I'm actually not exactly sure what the point of it is, maybe it's for people who after a few years realize they deleted files they should have kept. But I'm not like that, thank god! If I delete something, then I delete it forever and with a good reason. If my hard drive fails, I'm not going to load a backup from 3 years ago.

  • How retrieve Time Machine purple backups?

How retrieve Time Machine backups older than now? Am using Lion (10.7.2). In Time Machine, all my backups that are older than 'Now' have purple date/time stamps and bars, and no 'populated' finder-like window to enable access to my older-than-now backups. My TM backups are on a Drobo S.

    Kadege wrote:
Hello Pondini, I've got the same problem, nearly all dates are purple, older than some days. This moves with the time, some days ago, 25-Dec was available, today it isn't (but 26-Dec is).
Do you mean the Dec 25 backup is no longer shown in the TimeLine at all?  If so, either it's been deleted, or your backups are corrupt.  If you didn't delete it, try to repair your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Or, if you mean the Dec 25 backup is there, but is faded-out and you can't select it, that's because whatever's in your Finder window before you Enter Time Machine wasn't included in that particular backup -- select something else before entering Time Machine, or in the Finder sidebar once you're there.  See #15A in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details, especially the pink box there.
When accessing the Backup on TimeCapsule via Finder directly, I can see the volume (500 GB) has left 19,37 GB free.  I can see, too, all the backups, which are purple in Timemachine, exist (beginnin in July 2011 when I bought the computer).
Yes, eventually, Time Machine will fill all the empty space available to it.  Before that, it will periodically "thin" your backups, per the schedule on the Time Machine Preferences window -- all but the first of the day are deleted after 24 hours; those are kept for a month, then reduced to one per week.
Once the drive gets near full, it will start deleting the oldest backup(s) to make room for new ones.  Since you have your first backups, that hasn't started yet, but probably will before long.
including system-sofware and applications, which I don't backup by Timemachine.
That's usually not a good idea.  It saves relatively little space (perhaps 10-20 GB), and no time (after the first backup), but it means you can't do a full system restore from those backups, or use them with either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to set up a new Mac, or to transfer your stuff if you have to erase or replace your internal HD.  Once you get this sorted out, I'd strongly recommend removing those exclusions.

  • Time machine backup between OSX versions?

    Hi,
I have a 2006 Mac Pro with OSX10.7 installed, I decided to upgrade as the newest versions of OSX aren't supported. My question is could I restore my OSX 10.7 time machine backup to OSX 10.8? Or would it change the OSX version to 10.7 on the new machine? If so is there anyway to restore the time machine backup without losing OSX 10.8 or having to buy and reinstall it?
    Thanks, Tom

Once you have bought a version of Mac OS X, you may re-download and re-Install it as often as you like without paying again -- provided you use the same Apple-ID to do so.
A 2006 Mac Pro cannot run 10.8, so I do not understand the rest of your query. That Mac is stuck at 10.7 as the highest it can run. If you attempt to download 10.8 to it, it should refuse to do so, offering instead the highest purchased version that can actually run on that machine.

  • Backup management: how to update a Time Machine backup on a different Mac?

    Hello everyone,
I need some advice. I have a question, which I think is simple, but my situation is a bit complicated, so I am not sure about what to do.
I will try to describe it as simply as possible.
    There are 3 macs:
A: an old macbook (the white one)
B: a modern macbook pro (retina)
C: another modern macbook pro (TBD)
I am giving away B now; I expect to get C in 2 months time; I keep A with me all the time.
The goal is to migrate all of the data from B to C.
I have Time Machine backups of B.
Since the transition is a long time (2 months), I need to keep working on my data during this period. For this I will use A. This will generate new files, modify old ones, ...
Since A's HDD is much smaller than B's backup, I can move only part of them.
By the way, I have totally erased A and used migration assistant to restore part of my old data from B. So, when I use A now, I do it with my same account as in B (and the same I will use in C).
How do I manage my backups in such a way that, when I will get C, I can safely move all of the data I had in B plus all of the changes and modifications that I have done during the 2 month transition?
Can I just continue to use Time Machine (on A) to update the old backups? I am afraid that some mess could be created because the computers are different (before the backups were taken on B, while now on A), even the present data are different (because now A only contains a subset of the original B data, which I do NOT want to lose), the good point is that the user is the same.
Thanks for the patience to read through. If something is not clear I will be happy to explain better.

When you get MBP C and start it up for the first time you will be given the option to transfer data or not. You can transfer data from another Mac or from a backup such as Time Machine. The former requires that you be able to connect the two computers directly together either by Ethernet cable or by having both connected to a local Ethernet network. You can use wireless, but it's very slow compared to Ethernet, so I don't recommend wireless.
If you expect to perform the transfer from a Time Machine backup, then be sure to perform a backup of MBP B just before using it to transfer data to the new MBP C.
This same process can be used from MB A provided it is running Snow Leopard or later.
Also, see Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

  • How is Time Machine affected by daily shut down?

I live in Florida in an area with frequent lightning strikes. I've lost a lot of electronics even with surge protection. As a result of this problem my computer remains unplugged until I'm ready to use it. I may have it on for 8 to 10 hours one day and then have it on for 1 hour or less the next day.
I would like to set up an external hard drive for Time Machine backups but I'm wondering how this will work in my situation. How would a daily or hourly backup work if the computer is only on for 45 minutes? Or if I'm ready to shut down the computer and the 2nd hourly backup starts how long does it take to complete? If the computer is shut down in the middle of a backup will the backup be corrupted or will Time Machine pick up where it left off at the next start up?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Same here. Your best bet +*by far+* is to get a good U.P.S. system; one with a USB cable that plugs in to your Mac and tells it that utility power is out and it's switched to battery.
When you first plug the cable in, you'll get additional options in System Preferences > Energy Saver where you can specify when OSX should do a controlled power-off when the power goes out: number of minutes on battery, percent of battery left, and/or number of minutes left on battery power.
Also plug your external drive (and perhaps modem and/or router, but not printer) into it as well.
By the way, this will also protect your Mac against power dips, as well as surges and outages.
You should be able to find one for well under $100. I've had a couple of APC units; others are fine, too; just get one with a USB cable. Here's APC's selector: http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm
(One thing that seems odd is, if your Mac is asleep when the power goes out, it will wake up when the power goes out; then wait for the shutdown criteria.)
I would like to set up an external hard drive for Time Machine backups but I'm wondering how this will work in my situation. How would a daily or hourly backup work if the computer is only on for 45 minutes?
If it's only on for 45 minutes, TM may not do a backup.
Or if I'm ready to shut down the computer and the 2nd hourly backup starts how long does it take to complete?
That depends on how much has changed, and how fast your drive and connection are (F/W 800 is about twice as fast as USB); but they're usually only a few minutes.
If the computer is shut down in the middle of a backup will the backup be corrupted or will Time Machine pick up where it left off at the next start up?
It will "recover" the partial backup the next time. But the partial is not usable for any other purpose (you cannot restore anything from it), so it's best to avoid cancelling.

  • 10.5.5 Update - Time Machine Backup Stuck "Preparing" (How do I fix?)

I gave up on it with 10.5.4. Thought I would try since Apple fixed...it's still not working.
    Background
    1. This is my first backup. I've never been able to do a complete backup.
    2. I have my laptop plugged in via ethernet to the TC.
    3. I'm backing up about 90 gigs.
    4. The firmware on my TC is 7.3.2.
    5. Read/write access to the TC is working fine. I can access folders, create folders, copy files, delete files when accessing through finder.
Not sure what other info I can provide.
    Please help. Thanks!

*Unmount the Backup Disk Image* #
It seems that one of the keys to successful Time Machine backups is a successful eject/unmount of the hard disk following the PREVIOUS backup. If the Console logs indicate that the previous, though successful, backup ended with something like:
Attempt to eject disk image failed with status: -47, dissenting pid: 0
Then the very next backup is likely to fail with “Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory.”
A failed eject/unmount event usually means that your backup disk image is still visible on your desktop. If it is still there then unmount the backup disk image by either clicking the little Eject icon to the right of the disk image in the Finders’ Sidebar, or Ctrl-Clicking the drive icon on the desktop and selecting “Eject” from the contextual menu. Now try backing up again.
On the other hand, if after seeing this error message your backup disk image does NOT appear on the desktop, it doesn’t mean that this wasn’t the reason. You see, it is very likely that the current failed attempt to backup DID successfully eject/unmount the disk. In this case another attempt to backup will likely succeed.
    *Excluding Primary Drive?*
Open the Time Machine preferences. Click "Options". Is your primary HD listed as one of the items to EXCLUDE from backup. If it is, remove it from the list and try again.
Another poster observed: “Had this myself but it was because for some strange reason my startup disk (the one I wanted to backup) was included in the 'don’t backup these items' list!”
Let us know if any of the suggestions above helped.

  • How to move existent Time Machine backups to a NAS?

    Hello everybody
I am not sure if I am posting this discussion in the correct community, so please move it to the right one in case you need.
Currently I am using a 1TB external hard drive to store all my time machine backups. This drive also contains other information (movies, photos etc). I bought a Western Digital MyBook World Edition II which is a NAS. I want it to move my Time Machine backups to my NAS. How can I do it? Just copy over the backups folder from the external hard drive to the NAS?
    Thank you!
    Gilson

    That's just crazy slow.
It won't be fast, as the data can't go directly from the old disk to the new one.  It must pass through your Mac, so is on the network twice, slowing the effective speed by roughly half.  But that's awful.
There could be any number of causes, from bad ports or cables to problems with either drive or controller.  I don't have any experience with modern RAID systems, but some of the older ones were extremely slow when there was a problem with one of the drives.
And it may get worse -- if the backups are damaged, the copy will fail and the result won't be useable.
About all I can recommend is the usual:  it's always prudent to keep secondary backups. If you don't have any, I'd strongly recommend getting a (plain) external HD and making a "bootable clone" on it ASAP (that will probably slow the copy down somewhat).  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for details and some suggestions.
It wouldn't have to be a 2 TB drive, just the same size as your internal HD (or at least 10% larger than the data on it).  You might consider getting a portable drive, so you can take it to a secure off-site location once you get your TM backups working to the new WD box.  Then update it periodically.
