Could a solid state drive leak?
Have another thread on the go regarding fluid leaking from my white MacBook. Exploring avenues outside of the mac itself now. Apple want it taken to the an apple store for immediate inspection but warned I could end up being charged for repairs due to accidental liquid damage, although I didn't damage the machine. No liquid was place around or near the machine. This was a chemical liquid.
My question is, could the solid state drive installed in the machine have leaked and caused this problem? If its still under warranty and has damaged my whole computer could they be liable to repair or replace this machine? All answer gratefully received. Desperate for advice in this matter,
I would be surprised if a SSD contained any liquid, but your best source for that information would be the manufacturer of the SSD.
Best of luck.

Will apple upgrade my solid state drive in my 15 inch 2014 macbook pro to the 1tb version?
I currently have the 500 GB Solid State Drive in my 2014 15inch Macbook Pro. Due to my usage requirments (videography). I was wondering if i paid for it, could i get apple to install the drive in my macbook?
No. But you can add an external drive for storage uses. However, if you bought it within the past 14 days from date of purchase you can exchange for the model you prefer unless it is a CTO model.

Good day all
I would like to add a solid state drive to my imac 27" which currently has 1TB drive. I know that you can by the imac with a ssd and an hdd but can a dealer install a ssd after the fact?I did there are no videos for installing a HD in a late model iMac on OWC's website that I could find. Once again, can you provide the URL on OWC's website that shows instructions on how to install?
Also it will NOT be the same process because SSD's are 2.5" devices and the internal HD's in a iMac are 3.5" devices. Therefore either an adapter or some type of bracket must be used. Apple does NOT include the bracket on non-SSD equiped iMacs so it's up to the shop or user to source one. -
What is the best way to partitioning Macbook Air 13" 2012 solid state drive
What is the best way to partitioning Macbook Air 13" 2012 solid state drive.
Tech,
You don't provide enough information onto which anyone could reasonably formulate an answer.
As mentioned, you don't indicate the circumstances that would warrant consideration of multiple partitions. Moreover, you also don't indoicate the size of the SSD in question.
Like Fred said, ordinarily you leave it alone as one. Some people like to keep data and the OS/apps separate, but it is for specific reasons. -
Toshiba Solid State Drive Not Detected
Sony Ultrabook Model: SVT131B11L
Micro Toshiba Solid State Drive 256 GB
Laptop can not find the OS anymore, Hard Drive not being detected in BIOS.
Able to remove the Micro SSD and connect it externall to a computer.
Any recomendations on how to extract the Data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the forums for Toshiba USA. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region.
If it's a European model, you could check the Toshiba Europe forums.

How do I get the Recovery partition onto a DVD set from my solid state drive?
My Pavilion dv6 has only a solid state drive. I need to recover and reuse the 23 gb currently partitioned for recovery. To do this I need to move the recovery files off the drive. Can this be done? Where do i find instructions on how to do it?
Thanks,

Hello txi, Your best bet would be to use a hard drive image program and perform a complete hard drive image.
If you have Windows 7 on the SSD this would include the System partition, the C: partition and the D: Recovery partition.
The D: Recovery requires some data from the Master Boot Record (MBR) in order to be accessed.
Just trying to copy the data from the Recovery partition would not be successful if you wanted to use this data later.
By making a hard drive imgae of the entire hard drive, and saving this image on an external hard drive, or a large enough USB drive, you could then delete the D: partition and expand the C: partition to recover the D: partition capacity.
Then if you need to revert back as the system was when the hard drive image was created, the D: partition would be put back on the SSD.

Optimisation -Solid state drives
Log Name:

Event ID: 257

Description:
The volume System Reserved was not optimised because an error was encountered: The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)
Should the system on Windows 8.1 try to optimise a solid state drive?
Hope this helps, GerryThis issue could be caused if Defragment take operation on SSD. And as we know SSD cannot be defragged.
I just want to mention that the above statement is not accurate as written.
The general wisdom is that one SHOULD not defrag an SSD. That's different than "cannot".
A file system indeed can be defragmented on any drive, including an SSD, though common wisdom is that the payback in performance to doing so is negligible, so doing a defragment operation just wears out the flash memory without any
real benefit.
Defragmenting the file system can ensure the data is read using fewer low level operations - i.e., a big block of data can be read in one contiguous chunk instead of several smaller chunks. Even as efficient as the most modern SSDs are, with near-zero
seek time, it DOES take some time for the operating system to prepare SATA commands and get them out to the drive across whatever busses and controllers are in place.
The difference in file system performance between a fragmented file system and a defragmented one can literally be hundreds of megabytes per second or even gigabytes per second when RAID is involved and the SATA link isn't a bottleneck. I
call your attention to the ATTO benchmark, which measures performance at various read sizes.
Therefore there is some current debate on whether an occasional (e.g., once a year) defrag on an SSD can optimize performance enough that it could actually be a good thing to do.
That said, with Windows 8 I'm not sure Microsoft's tools can actually be coaxed into doing a defrag on a (properly recognized) SSD. It was possible in Windows 7.

<Image Edited by Host to Remove Serial Number>Hi Nick,
I'm sure you "could" just double sided tape it - but I would fear it interferes with the air flow around other components/out the back slot. Plus, not sure the wires will reach, though they might be able to.
I used the NewerTechnologies Adaptadrive unit. It works perfectly and holds the SSD firmly. The little circuit board on the adapter just lines the SATA ports up perfectly with there they would be for a 3.5 inch drive. Was super simple, and I know the SSD won't come loose behind my screen. Be sure to get a full size adapatet like this. The little blue ones OWC also sells don't have the length needed for Apple's mounting brackets.
Here's the link, and I'll attach a photo of it pre-install and post install with the temp sensor back on.

Solid State Drive (SSD) on Recent Mac Book Pro
I bought a non-retina 15 inch MacBook Pro in late August / early September, with a 1 TB hard drive. Originally my intent was for the largest hard drive so I could keep my itunes music libarary (Approximatley 60 GB) on there. I've only used about 115 GB (xcode and a few macstore apps, and a lot of ios apps).
Recently, I've been getting paranoid about hard drive crashes due to it being a traditional drive rather than a Solid State Drive (SSD), (Thank you very much Phil Schiller), because I expect my storage level to stay at its existing level for sometime, I was considering swapping it out my existing 1 TB for a SSD. I'm assuming this can be done on a MBP, right?
Is it even worth the effort, or am I needlessly worrying?
Like I said, I bought it in late August / early September at the earliest, so the warranty is still in effect. I'm assuming swapping the drives would void the warranty. What if I took it into an apple store, and had them do the swap? Would it still void the warranty, or would it remain in effect.
Any thoughts?
Anybody from Apple or AppleCare have any thoughts or insight?
-JeffApologies. I probably should have checked the link I sent you. I narrowed it down to 3 choices (Direct links below)
http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT512M4SSD2
http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT512M4SSD2BAA

I didn't see anything about a transfer kit (or external drive dock) from your original post, or anything 3.5 inch adapter bracket. So your last post helps clarify things.
I'm assuming because I don't have an external drive dock, I should just go with the transfer kit, RIght?
At this point, due to the level of complexity, I'm thinking it may be easier to just take it in to the apple store and have them do it.
Do you know if they do this?
I'm sure if they do, they charge a premium, but even if its only $100 + cost of the drive, it would be worth it, not to have to deal with it myself.
Thanks,
Jeff -
Solid State Drive Stats?
I know that the solid state drives that come as an option for the MacBook Pros are 128gb and 256gb, but does anybody have their read/write times and onboard cache? If you do, could you tell it to me, or at least write down the specific model number on the drive?

I have 2 Solid state drives in my computer. For a while they worked fine. Then a couple of weeks ago the main drive stopped working. I got a error message that said "drive not found". The only way that I could get the main drive (PNY 480 gb) to work, was to reinstall the operating system and disconnect the second drive (SAN DISK 256gb). When I had both drives hooked up, the main drive would not boot-up. Then I would get the error message that said "driver not found". Why did the drives work for a couple of weeks an not they won't work togather. Will 2 SSD's work in my computer?

My neighbor is looking to possibly buy a Macbook Pro this month. She would like to get the 512 solid state drive upgrade but the cost is utterly nuts. My reply to her was, "why pay less when you can pay more?" Seriously. I did mention that she could buy the same ssd drive, elsewhere, for literally $500 cheaper. I also mentioned that for her money she might want to wait for ivy-bridge and usb 3. Would like to hear from those who are happy with cost verses benefits of solid state drives.
Csound1 wrote:
Because your post suggested that other than capacity they are the same, and they are not, neither of them are as fast as pure SSD, but the 750 is closer (I don't really care how fast they boot, I rarely reboot) they are quicker at opening and closing files than pure rotational drives. There is also a price difference as you noted, but if price was the issue we'd be using regular drives and saving much more money. As a bonus the 750 is cooler and quieter than the 500 in my experience (2 x 750, 20+ x 500)
Current firmware for them is SD28 for the 500 and SD12 for the 750, SD28 is a must if you use the 500, 26 & 27 had issues.
I am sorry my post does not suggest that at all. I suggested the 750 and stated what I used to replace the SSD I had in my system. -
Solid State Drive = Gets stuck
Hello,
I recently bought Intel's 520 Series Solid State Drive. I swapped my hard drive with the SSD, booted on a Snow Leopard disk. Opened Disk Utility, formatted my drive (Mac OS Extended Journaled) and installed Snow Leopard. After I installed the applications I needed, I finally upgraded to OS X Lion. But now I can't browse the net, work on applications or do any other task without getting a beach ball every 2 - 3 minutes. My MacBook Pro gets stuck a lot for some reason. (I never had this issue with my older hard drive)
I have the latest version of OS X Lion, but no firmware update was available for my SSD. I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how this can be fixed?
Thanks. What model MBP do you have? Older systems don't handle SSDs as well as newer system. Especially systems that don't do the 6GB SATA interface, which is what the Intel 520 series is. Although they state the drive interface is baclwards compatible that does always mean it will work correctly on older systems that only do SATA 1 transfers, 1.5GB.
You could try a Clean Fresh install of Lion without first installing SL. That may or may not work.
Just boot to the recovery HD partition and erase the Macintosh HD partition then re-download and install Lion. -
External solid state drive for scratch disk?
After doing everything i can find to optimize my hardware/software for doing 3D animation in Ps Ext CS6. I still cannot render an animation to video using the Ray Traced Final setting. (Ray Traced Draft, no problem.) The last time I tried (after repairing disk permissions), at least Ps did not crash and give me the same old crash report (Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000007a0020000). This time I just got an error msg that my request could not be completed. (Progress?) Checking Activity Monitor, I could see that my available RAM, which was 13 GB when I started the render was now less than 1 GB (761 MB).
So, I have come to the conclusion that my 16 GB of RAM and 300 GB available for virtual memory on my HD is not enough for rendering the type of 3D animation I am trying to do. Would you agree? Also, I have read it is not good to use the same HD your program is installed on for a scratch disk, so I am considering getting an external solid state drive to use as a scratch disk.
Whaddaya think? Does this sound like a good solution for me?
Thanks!

Can my computer slow down if I use too much of my solid state drive?
This isn't for my iMac, but for a MacBook pro I am going to get at some time. I want a solid state drive in it, but they are kind of small. I could get away with a 256gb because I use about 109gb on my iMac and plan to use a little less on the MacBook pro. Is this ok if I use 50% of my solid state or more, or will it slow down my computer. If I must get the 512 I will, but I am only 14 and this is a lot of money for me to spend or I guess for anyone. I don't want to be cheap about it, but I want to get the best for my $$.
