Could cheap ram have damaged my hd?

I've recently had an issue with my mac pro which may have highlighted an issue which has been there for a while and I'm looking for some advice.
Around a year ago I upgraded a few HDs and the ram in my 2007 mac pro [xeon quad-3.0ghz]
I bought an OCZ Vertex SSD for the system drive and when I first installed 10.6 on to it, it would boot super fast. At the same time I also ordered 8gb [2x4gb sticks] of cheap ram from eBay.
I never really saw a performance increase with the ram but I just put it down to always having a well maintained system anyway.
Quite soon after, I noticed that on startup the computer would hang on a grey screen for a while before flashing the "question mark on folder" for a second and then straight to the grey apple but boot within seconds. I had seen this happen before with networked machines [which mine are] and put it down to that.
However, recently my machine stopped booting altogether and would hang but then go to the flashing "question mark on folder" and stay there.
I tried a number of things including swapping drive bays and cleaning any dust from the inside of the machine but didn't have any luck until I went back to my using the 1gb of ram I got with the machine. The machine then booted with no problem.
This has obviously made me realise I need to invest in some decent ram but I'm finding that even now, the machine is hanging on the grey screen before booting.
So if it is down to the ram. Could it have had a lasting effect on the machine?
I'm thinking it will be worth doing a reinstall on the disk but before I go through all that I wanted to get other peoples opinion.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Maybe your problem has nothing to do with ram.  So some questions/experiments...
1. Did you run DU verify/repair on all your mounted drives?
2. Did you check your Startup Disk system preferences that the boot drive is explicitly specified?  If not, when you boot, the system will search around for the boot drive until it finds it.  During that search it will display the flashing question mark.  Of course that will continue if it never finds a valid boot disk.
3. If you disconnect all unneeded periphials (disk, firewires, usb's) would it boot?
4. What would happen if you back up your SSD to a HDD (should have backups anyway), remove the SSD, and boot from the HDD backup?  Maybe the SSD is getting "flaky".  Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to clone a boot drive.
5. What happens if you boot in safe mode?

  • Could I have damaged my hdd for unadequate ventilation?

Hi, anyone thinks I could have damaged the internal HDD of mi mid 2011 mac mini by having papers/magazines on top of it while using? my HDD is not responding or restoring either and windows PC does not recognizes it now that I have taken it out of the mini and put in on an enclosure.
I had updated OSx to mountain lion (lion was on it originally) so I don't know if that can make your hdd work harder than the original OSx on the mini when purchased.
At first it got slow while playing games like bejeweled and stuff like that but one day it just didn't boot, and tried several times to restore it but it kept failing. So I have taken it out of the mini and try to use an external enclosure to format it but windows 7 doesn't show it on the explorer.
I have screwed up another hdd for a dell inspiron laptop before and the only explanation I can think of is maybe overheating because mi mac mini didn't had proper ventilation (I mean, nothing on top or besides it in the desktop) so I'm starting to think that maybe that happened again.
If i remember correctly I ran hardware diagnostics once but it didin't said anything was wrong except for the hdd that needed to be fixed and after that I tried to format but it didn't respond.
I used my mini for garageband recording, casual games and the usual internet/social network stuff... so if I get a new hdd I may get something a bit faster (came with 500 GB 5400 RPM HDD, I'm thinking of 7200 RPM) to improve garageband responsiveness.

According to Google Laboratories test of hard drive failure, the largest test of hard drive reliabiity to date (which you can download here) many accepted truisms about hard drive failure factors are simply not true. Perhaps the greatest surprise was the fact that excessive heat was NOT a significant factor in drive failure. So it is unlikely you caused the failure becasue of running the drive too hot. That said and the Google Labs test aside I prefer to keep my drives well ventilated and use enclosures that do a good job of conducting heat away from the mechanism.

  • EtreCheck Report: Could somebody please have a look at this?

    Hello guys (m/f)
I just did an EtreCheck after I read about it a whilke ago here on the Apple Support Communities.  I'm using a late 2012 iMac now, but my previous iMac (2009, not sure when exactly) seemed to be slow too.  It's slow opening tabs, sites, etc.  And it's slow shutting down.
BTW I switched off Time Machine a while ago, as my external WD started reporting bad block.  (Wanted to get my NAS to take over, but can't figure out why.   That's why I've been going without a Time Machine backup for way to long.)

You have a lot of potential for things to go wrong. If any of the red items are old they could be doing a lot of damage to performance, since they are loaded into the system level.
Synology appears to be doing something with SIMBL - follow the removal instructions at http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php
It is a hacky way to inject code into apps. Check the synology site for updates.
The failed launchd job [failed] de.writeitstudios.cookiestumbleragent.plist could cause issues within your user account.
    Your login items are duplicated.

That isn't a great idea. I'd suggest you logout, log back in but hold shift as you click the login button it will disable all those apps & show you if they are part of your issues.
'Safe mode' will disable all third party extensions & startup items (hold shift after the chime until the spinning 'cog' appears). Ensure the login window says 'safe mode'.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Be aware that some features will be disabled like wifi on some models, graphics drivers will be in a reduced mode - this is normal in safe mode. Reboot to go back to normal.
Hopefully the notes below will help you understand the report better

Red items are loaded at the system level (not necessarily bad, but they have the potential to modify the OS).
Blue items are loaded at the user level
    Cleanup:
All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.
Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).
Reboot for the system changes to take effect.
    How to find updates:
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)
In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
    Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/
Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.
    Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/
Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.
    Launchd jobs: several types
    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents
    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons
User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.
EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…
    [loaded]                  - a running job
[not loaded]            - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)
[failed]                    - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.
    User login items:
Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.
These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.
    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:
    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences
Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.
Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).
Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).
Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.

  • Could bad RAM be the cause??

When I ordered this iMac from SmallDog, I had them add a 512MB module and it hasn't appeared to cause a problem (it shows up in Profiler and no tests have ever shown a problem).
However, almost since I got the iMac in late June, I have had nothing but problems with
    (1) staying connected to the internet (dialup), disconnecting me anywhere from less than 60 seconds to an hour or so repeatedly, and
    (2) I have gone through 5 different USB hubs from two different manufacturers (Macally and Iogear) with the same problem continuing: One or more of my peripherals lose power / become unresponsive intermittently. The only fix is to repeatedly unplug/plug back in. This happens anywhere from 5 minutes to ? after booting up.
After troubleshooting with my ISP and getting hubs replaced, I've spent a lot of time with Apple tech support and after all the software troubleshooting incl. running fsck (all ok) and erase/install, they have now issued an order to test (replace?) the power board strip (or whatever the part is called that connects all the ports in back of the iMac), the logic board, the modem cable assembly and card.
Anyway, I will have to take it in tomorrow and here (finally) is my question:
Could the added RAM have anything to do with my problems and should I remove the added 512MB before taking it in?
FYI, my iMac is on the Apple list of first generation iMacs with logic board/capacitor/etc problems.

I don't think RAM is the issue since it relates to the USB power. If the issue persists with factory only RAM, then that would be significant to know. I would test that first, and let the repair center know if you can reproduce it with only factory RAM. Removing the RAM though be careful, static electricity can damage the logic board. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, ask a repair center to do it for you, so you can eliminate that as a potential problem.

  • Cheaper RAM for iMac G5

I was searching and searching for cheap RAM for my iMac. It seems most places sale RAM for Macintosh computers but charge up the butt for it. Mac comps, or atleast the iMac G5, use what should be cheaper CAS3 memory. While searching I found most places were selling 1GB sticks of "Mac" RAM for $130 or more. I found the memory configurator on Patriot Memory's website and found this model stick of 1GB RAM to be compatible with the iMac G5 2Ghz, PSD1G400. I got two pieces shipped for $212 (not from Patriot but a reseller). I found most other websites' memory configurator will have a 1GB stick of "Mac" RAM and then another stick of 1GB CAS3 RAM for alot cheaper but wouldn't confirm the 1GB CAS3 RAM as compatible for Mac. These websites also would not list the specs of the "Mac" RAM. Who knows. The "Mac" RAM might be the same as the other RAM but they just want to sell it for more. I haven't recieved my 2 sticks of RAM yet but I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Mac-specific RAM was available in recent months for the same price that you have quoted. Apparently RAM prices, both generic and Mac-specific, have risen since then. Prices will fall at some point in the future. I have tried generic RAM in my iMac G5 and had no problem with it. I got a nice sized rebate when I bought it. Some others have claimed to have had problems with generic RAM, however.

  • Where can I find cheap ram?

I have a macbook with only 512 mb ram and am looking to ungrade to the full 2 gb. Anyone know where you can get cheap ram that is reliable? Or what I should look for in buying ram, such as how to tell if it is quality?

I bought my crucial Ram at Newegg.com
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=381&name=Laptop-Memory
cruicial.com also has good prices. The main thing is see that it has lifetime warranty.

  • When I watch a streaming HD video the picture is jittery. Could adding RAM solve the problem?

When I watch a streaming HD video the picture is jittery. Could adding RAM solve the problem?

hello ozltem, i think this is related to this bug in adobe's flash plugin: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3223393 (apparently they are aware of the issue & can replicate it, but they are not fixing it because it doesn't have a high priority).
as a workarounf you could try if [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes#w_solution-2-downgrade-to-flash-10-3 downgrading to flash 10.3] (which is still supported) or [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround disabling protected mode].

  • Will 32GB RAM have noticeable benefit compared to 16GB?

Will 32GB RAM have noticeable benefit compared to 16GB?  Reason I'm asking is that I've just built a new PC: 3770K, 32GB RAM, SSD for OS and programs, SSD for scratch, Caviar Black for storage, etc but unfortunately Windows 7 Home Premium only allows 16GB RAM!  I have Windows 8 Pro which I could install giving me access to full 32GB but only really want to do this if 32GB will offer tangible benefit to Photoshop.
Would love to hear from those that actually have upgraded from 16GB to 32GB.  Thx!

    Hi Noel,
I usually have quite a few windows open.  At the moment (which is probably fairly typical) I have Lightroom, Photoshop, 10 tabs in Firefox, Outlook and Mediamonkey (mp3 player).  One of the little things I like about Windows 8 in a dual monitor setup is that the task bar on both monitors display open apps and those pinned there.  With Windows 7 only the main monitor got them.  Also the new start window (which started life as 'metro') only displays on one monitor so the other monitor still shows apps/desktop.
Overall, I would say it is a better user experience, performance seems very good and start up time is improved.  Just another example of the difference betweem W7 and W8: I have a Logitec surround system that used to be a real pain everytime I did a fresh install of W7.  I'd have to install drivers manually and then mess around with settings for quitte a while before it would work.  It was a common complaint on the Logitech user forums.  When I installed W8, the system worked flawlessly - I installed no drivers or did anything.  I was amazed!
And yes, I have a GeForce (570) so can't comment on other CARDs.  When I first installed W7 with the card I had to manually install the right graphics driver.  With W8 it seemed to find them automaticaly and it booted straight up without a problem.  I did however then proceed to get the latest drivers from Nvidea and do a manual driver install just in case.
And unless there is some technical reason preventing it, I bet Aero will return to W8 in an update - many people have commented on that.

  • Could I please have feedback on adding Aperture, mainly for organization and storage.

I have Iphoto and Adobe Photoshop already.  In my iPhoto I have 30K photos.  Could I please have feedback on adding Aperture, mainly for organization and storage.

You wouldn't be adding it, you'd be replacing iPhoto with it.
It does all the jobs that iPhoto does, and then some. You'll also find yourself using Photoshop less.

plugin-container.exe is used to run Flash and other plugins so if they crash they do not take down your main Firefox session. But... I don't think memory usage would be that different if you tricked Firefox into running Flash inside firefox.exe. (There was a thread with the trick, but I can't recall the details. It was not a regular Firefox setting.)

  • Could my mac have been hacked?

Could my mac have been hacked?
This maybe an odd question but recently I have been receiving anonymous threatening emails which appear to be from my ex-girlfriend or her friends. I closed one email account down plus suspended my Facebook. Now I am receiving more threats via other my email accounts.
Today both my sister and I have received similar via email and also mobile phone text message.
I am now concerned that somehow someone has stolen my info via my Mac or iCloud. Is this possible?

I have already reported it to the police but the person(s) have used some kind of anonymous email thing, probably isn't worth the cost or the man hours in trying to track it down. It's made me a bit paranoid about my personal information. I will be beefing up the security on my mac, and changing all of my passwords, can anyone recommend any good security / firewall software to keep things safe online?

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Am I able to keep a balance on my account for buying songs? I just bought 15 songs and I thought it would come off my credit card on file. But my card did not show a purchase. Could I still have some money left from agift card? How do I view my balance?

? How do I view my balance?

Your balance should show to the left of account id at the top of the iTunes store page on your computer's iTunes. You can also check it by clicking on that id, or doing Store > View My Account, which should show your account balance and let you view your payment info

  • Fails to boot, could bad ram cause failure to boot?

About a 2010 MacBook Pro fails to boot. The Apple logo comes up with the spinning gear and never goes further. The hard drive sounds like it's running and it will not boot up from an external drive with OS installed.
I'm thinking it's a bad logic board but could bad ram cause it to fail to boot?

    Do you get any beeps?
    1 - No RAM
    2 - Incompatible RAM
    3 - Faulty RAM
4 - No good boot image in boot ROM
    5 - Failed processor
Those are beeps, not the normal startup chime.

  • All notes on 4S gone. Any idea how this could happen? Have never synced notes. They are just gone.

Well, I know in iOS 5 they can be linked to e-mail accounts, not sure if you had that setup or not.
For future reference, use a program like Evernote, amazing and free, plus dedicated PC apps if you want to view notes on your computer.
