Could Heating a Faulty Video Chip Affect iCamera?

I bought a used MacBook Pro 15" (A1260 - Early 2008) about 4 months ago, After about 2 months, the computer stopped working (no chime, nothing). I took it to a repair shop, and the technician told me that I had been cheated. He told me that the video chip had been repaired in such a way that it would only work for a couple more months before ultimately failing. Now, the entire logic board needs to be replaced (apparently, the 'repair' damaged other parts of the board).
I assume he is talking about using a heat gun to extend the life of a video chip - I've read up on this practice, and it seems like a logical conclusion. However, I am not 100% sure this is what happened. Assuming that the video chip was heated as presumed, is it possible/likely that this 'repair' would/could cause the iCamera to stop working? This technician was not a Mac expert, so he didn't know.
When I bought the laptop, the seller told me that the camera didn't work - since I rarely use a camera, this wasn't a problem for me. But if I can determine that a repair of this type could/would negatively affect the camera, then I would be able to deflect accusations that I performed this procedure after purchase (I didn't). The seller claimed to be the original owner, so it is obvious that this happened under his ownership.
Thanks for any and all constructive input. Links to technological documentation would be greatly appreciated, as I am trying to build a case for court. And please no comments about the laptop being too old for such trouble - this is more about principle than it is about money.

>this is because the keyboard didn't function.<
OK new piece of information. In this model the power button connects underneath the keyboard and then via the keyboard cable is connected to the logic board. If the keyboard didn't work (Was it always like that?) then most possibly the power button won't work either. This could have been an original condition or something that occurred within the 4 months that you had the machine.
There is a way to start the computer with the top case off (I.e. keboard and power button). There are two pads (circuit board lands) on the logic board marked seperated with a line and marked "pwr". They are on the lower left of the logic board between the RAM and the upper left of the optical drive. Shorting those will start the computer.
Also:
>This technician was not a Mac expert,<
I'd get an expert opinion especially before proceeding with a lawsuit.

  • HP Pavilion dv2799ea special edition - NVIDIA Faulty graphics chip!

My HP laptop has stopped working as a result of an NVIDIA faulty graphics chip. The HP Pavilion dv2799ea is now unusable unless I replace the motherboard. I am horrified to discover that lots of other models with the same problem have been granted a free replacement motherboard but my model is not on HP's list of products they are prepared to repair, therefore apparently I am not eligible for the 2 year extended warranty and repair.
My laptop is less than 18 months old, cost £1000 and I now have to pay out £300 to have it fixed!
This has got to be the worst experience I have have incurred from any product or company in my whole life.
How come HP will replace other models with the same problem but not my version?
This is apparently a known issue across the world and NVIDIA have admitted they have fitted models with this faulty chip so surely it is HPs responsibility to repair anyone's laptop that has this fault?
I bought this expensive equipment from HP in good faith, trusting that they would supply a product that would be reliable and of excellent quality. Quality worth spending £1000 on.....What I got? A low end budget laptop version that is faulty just outside of the years warranty and an expensive repairs bill!
I wish I had only bought a cheap one. The blow would not be so bad.
I warn anyone out there who thinks that spending a lot of money with HP will buy you quality and durability..Think again! HP are obviously happy for their customers to be out of pocket and apparently are not concerned that customers would not buy from them again. I could now never recommend their products to anyone, their products are not worth the money and the after service is even worse!
If anyone has any ideas as to how I could get this problem fixed without it costing me £300 I would be grateful. I cannot afford to get it repaired right now so will be without it until such time as I can get the funds together.
When I bought this 'special edition' I did not realise at the time quite how 'special' it was going to end up being.
I would also be interested to hear from anyone who has the same model and has experienced the same issue as myself.
    Thanks

  • Another faulty G84 chip?

My t61p, which is out of warranty, would not startup. All I get is 3 beeps and a blank screen.
I have researched this problem and what I have conlcuded is that this problem is due to the video card. People have stated that this problem is due to the faulty G84 chip which Nvidia refuses to take responsibity for.
I also reseated the RAM and cleaned and dusted the internals of my computer, making sure everything was connected in place. The problem still persists.
I dont want to pay 500 dollars for another replacement that might break in a year or two anyways.
Its such a shame that a 1700 dollar computer broke within 2 years.
I rarely game on the computer, occassionally playing counterstrike 1.6 (which is not even a GPU/CPU intensive game) so I dont even know why heat would even be a issue
    Your guy's thoughts

Make sure the SATA cable is firmly connected to the back of the drive before making any conclusions. If you are not comfortable doing this, your Apple-Authorized Service Provider can do it for you.
If this is a New Mac Pro, the drive with the sample defect can be replaced under warranty at no cost to you.
If it is refurbished, you must deal with the Apple Store, as the local dealers are not authorized to replace Dead-on-Arrival items with Service parts for refurbished Macs. Once you are no longer talking about D.O.A., your local service provider can make any repairs you need..

  • T42 want to upgrade video chip, so I need a new motherboard, what will be compatible?

    Hello, lenovo community.
First time posting here. I have recently been having issues with my T42, type 2373-8tu, where the screen will flicker and/or go blank, then the display will either look staticy (odd for an LCD) or it will just flash a bunch of artifacts (go here and click broken monitor, and that's sort of how my screen looks from time to time). I posted a thread on reddit and a user there suggested it could be an issue with the video chip if it's ATI (which it is). I did some research and found that it is a common problem.
Now, onto the upgrade. I was looking at the specs page and saw that there is a possible 128MB video chip, but I don't know if it's compatible with the 14.1 inch model (which I have). Further, I don't know which motherboard I would need which would have the video chip I'm looking for. Can any of you with more experience than myself offer some insight on this before I buy anything?
    Thanks for your time.

Brilliant! Thanks for that clarification. I opened it up last night to check some internal things and when I put it back together the screen backlight wasn't working. Could this be caused by a loose connection or is it more likely that I messed up the screen now too?
**Edit as of 1741 EST** Also I can't find the FRU for that board. Found the fru so nevermind that. However I don't want the security chip. It seems a lot of people have had issues with it and it seems more trouble than it's worth. Is there a way to get a board with out the security chip? This page doesn't show that's possible for the 128 MB board.
You might have blown the fuse on the motherboard, or it may just have died completely. Hard to tell without knowing more details.
As for the security chip, all of these "p" boards have one AFAIK, just turn it off in BIOS and call it a day, that's what I've been doing for a decade now anyway.
    Good luck.

  • After the video chip "fix"---now what

I taped a few palying cards together to "fix" the iBook G4 video chip thing. Closed the case. After start up a CD that had been trapped was spit out.
Success I thought, until, the start up brought me to the " where the heck is my hard drive" blinking folder. I attached a firewire cable to my emac and retarted in the "firewire mode" but no hard drive was accessible from my emac, So, now I have a phantom hard drive on my iBook G4 and clearly it is unuseable. Could I have damaged something by putting those cards under the cover? AND if not, is it time to have someone smarter than me fix it correctly :-/.
    Thanks

    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
That worked for me when I fixed my video chip problem. I think I had to do it a few times though.

  • Pavilion dv-7 4060us Video chip

    Hello, dear friends!
This is my problem: I have a laptop hp Pavilion dv-7 4060us which is about 4 years old. I bought it from a guy 3 years ago when I was on a "Work and Travel USA" student program. A few months ago my video chip died and I tried to replase it with an other one. It did not help. This time motherboard starts but when it comes to windows logo, the moment that its time to load windows, it shows me a mistake and the only option for me is to restart. When I told that to a friend of mine, he said that the graphics accelerator of the new chip is not working. I just talked to a guy from a service for computers and he said that because this laptop is with 2 video cards, in BIOS there should be an option to change between video cards. I logged in BIOS but I could not find any option connected to "video" subject.
And finaly, I starded to wonder if in the computer service the technician have changed the old not working Video chip with exactly the same new one. Because if he put an other chip, a different one, the laptop will not work.
So my question is: Would you tell me the exact model of the videio chip for my laptop?

    Hi TheBulgarian,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your hp Pavilion dv-7 4060us Notebook and needed to know a part number or Video chip number.  Here is a link to the manual page 2 for a description of the Video cards. I would need the serial number of the Notebook and the same for the motherboard.  Please review the HP Privacy Statement . Then send it to me in a private message.
    Thanks.

  • Error message "could not complete the video frames to layers command because dynamiclink is not avai

So I decided to try my hand at making gifs and so I attempted to upload a video by going to file -> import -> video frames to layers. Before even letting my pick my video it comes up with an error message saying "could not complete the video frames to layers command because dynamiclink is not availible." I then tried file -> open -> and then selected the video and no matter what file type or size I chose I ended up with the same error message.
I looked this problem up and attempted some of the solutions but to no avail. I tried clearing my preferences and restarting photoshop many times in addition to restarting my computer. I also checked to make sure it wasn't being blocked by any firewalls and it wasn't. My opperating system is Windows 7 and I'm using photoshop cs6. I've looked everywhere for an answer to this problem so if anyone is able to help me solve this problem I'd be much obliged.

You see my C:\ drive is quite small as it's a SSD, so I made Adobe install programs on my E:\ drive too, however this was the main cause for Adobe not to function.
After adjusting the settings to install everything back to my C:\ drive, it fixed my issue above and allowed me to run the 64bit version.

  • "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."

    I'm using Photoshop CS5 extended.
I've been using that to make gifs. It was fine when I import video frams into layers with the video formats of .mov or .avi. But After I installed OSX 10.6.8, this message comes up everytime I want to import videos: "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."
So I installed my old OS back which is 10.6.3 but the problem is still there.
May I know what to do to solve this problem because all along I've been fine with making gifs and importing videos until now.
    Please help, thank you.

The computer deities may be trying to say something to you.  GIF is not a video format.
Are you opening video with the same codec that was successfully opened before?

  • Could not complete the video frames to layers command because the file could not be opened

I recently learned to make gif images using KMPlayer and my Photoshop CS6, but today I hit a snag that I can't seem to get around. Normally I capture a scene from a show DVD I have in KMPlayer and then import the video frames into layers/frames in photoshop with no problem. Well today I went to do that, and captured the scene with what seemed like no problem (the small captured scene saved with no problem) but when I went to CS6 to import the video into layers, I got the error message "Could not complete the video frames to layers command because the file could not be opened". At first I thought it was the KMPlayer saving the files wrong, so I retried and got the same error message. Irestored the players settings back to a default and the file still wouldn't open in photoshop, and then I even tried uninstalling/reinstalling the player trying to get it to work, and then I thought it must be photoshop, because even scenes I had captured at an earlier day that worked perfectly fine when importing would not open.
What could possibly be causing this problem to occur. Should I uninstall/reinstall photoshop and see if that works, or am I doing something wrong?
The files I'm trying to import are AVIs as always, I even tried to capture scenes in other formats to no avail. What could be causing the problem?

I uninstalled an reinstalled photoshop totally and it didn't fix the problem either. I made a post on the KMPlayer's forum hoping for an answer but I haven't recieved one yet. I'm starting to think it's the kmplayer having a problem capturing, since I've started getting the error "could not import the file to layers because the file has no layers" sometimes in photoshop, but I'm still trying to work around in photoshop to see if the problem came from there.

  • Could not complete the video frames to layers command because the DynamicLink Media Server is not av

I have this problem, I have PS CS6 and when I click on File> Import> Video Frames to Layers.. Next, the window that says "Initializing Video Import" starting to load and always get stuck and that's what appears: "Could not complete the video frames to layers command because the DynamicLink Media Server is not available". That's with aaaall the videos.
PS: I've been trying with File> Open but that's what says "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"
Anybody know what happens to my photoshop? Thx!

The relevant auxiliary service/ helper app is being blocked and thus not launching,. anything from permissions issues to security tools getting in teh way. Check your Task Manager/ Activity Monitor, turn off security stuff, run as admin.

  • How to Correctly update Macbook Pro's video chip drivers

I am currently using Boot Camp with Windows 7 64 Bit on my MBP Early 2011. My question is how can you successfully update the video chip drivers when using windows 7? When I try to install drivers the AMD updater can not recognize my video card. But my games have made it clear that I am not running the most recent drivers

fmurry925, unfortunately, the "normal" way of updating video drivers doesn't apply to Boot Camp installations. For some reason, Apple uses a slightly customized video chip in MBP (ie mine is an nVidia 320M, which doesn't exist in any non-Apple computer. Well, there's one.)
This means that the standard nVidia driver set doesn't recognize this chip. And I suspect it's the same for your computer. So you're stuck with using the drivers available from Apple, which are updated much less frequently than the generic drivers.
There are workarounds for this, consisting of "modding" your INF to allow the generic drivers to work for you. But I did some searching, and it seems that your particular chip, which is "switchable" between the Radeon and the Intel graphics, doesn't have a modded INF available. Yet. So, unless someone else knows of a solution, you might be stuck with the Apple-supplied drivers for a while.

  • How to disable onboard video chip (ms6337)

    Hi all.
    My mainboard is MS6337(815Epro , bios version:1.4)
I've bought a new videocard ,so I want to disable the onboard video chip.
    Thanks for any help .

I don't really have anything to compare with  :(
I would need another i815E board to see if there is supposed to be a change at all.
My guess is that since there is no 3D engine in the integrated VGA core you need very little memory bandwidth to run it:
    1024*768 @ 85 FPS 24bit = 1024*768*85*4=255MB/S
The RAM is capable of 1066MB/S, but the PIII CPU never uses that anyway so there is no bandwidth conflict between the CPU and VGA.
