Could I download OS X Yosemite on an older MacBook (4,1 - Early 2008 [White]) if I've upgraded the RAM on it?

I've been trying to download an upgrade to the OS on my MacBook for a while, and now I've upgraded my RAM to 4GB (Which was the only specification my Mac did not meet to upgrade to OS X Yosemite), and I would like to know if the App Store will allow me to download the upgrade, before removing everything from my computer, and upgrading to fresh install of Yosemite (Since I will probably create a bootable drive, and wipe my hard drive). I'm running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard currently, with 4GB of RAM.

How come? My MacBook is up to the specifications on the Apple Website.
Actually, it's not.  Models that can run Yosemite are:
Before you install Yosemite, make sure you have one of these Macs:
iMac (Mid-2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Yours isn't one of those.  The newest OS your Mac can support is Lion (10.7.x)

What about using MLPostFactor?
Not familiar with this (looks like it was, originally, designed as a work-around to allow unsupported Macs to run Mountain Lion).  If it does work with Yosemite, I can't imagine it would work well enough to make it worth the effort.  Simply put, your hardware is too old and isn't designed to, optimally, handle the current OS.

    Try this:
Go to System Preferences - Bluetooth. Delete the keyboard from the list of devices by pressing the "-" button. Take the batteries out of the keyboard and reinsert them. In Bluetooth Preferences press the '+" button to add the new device. If the keyboard begins to pair, click the word "pair" and type in the passcode. Press return. The keyboard is now paired.
If the mouse is not pairing, try this: shut down the computer completely, unplug any USB mice, then turn off the power to the bluetooth mouse.  ONce the computer starts up again, wait for the pop-up looking for a mouse.  Turn on the power to the bluetooth mouse.  It should work normally now.

My macbook pro has service battery, what could happen if i upgrade the ram to 8gb

"Service Battery" means just that - you need to make an appointment with your local Apple Store or AASP and have the battery checked out and, likely, replaced.
If you upgrade to 8GB it will have no effect on the battery. 8GB is sort of the minimum that I would shoot for.

  • Downloaded OS 10.10. Was instructed to download iPhone 9.6. After 9.6 was downloaded iPhoto requested to update photo library which it will not do. How do I upgrade the photo library?

Downloaded OS 10.10. Was instructed to download iPhone 9.6. After 9.6 was downloaded iPhoto requested to update photo library which it will not do. How do I upgrade the photo library?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I downloaded Mtn. Lion about three weeks ago to my early 2008 24" IMAC. Logging in generates all sort of weird graphics and finally a lock up. Unusable except under safe mode.

I have been on the phone with technical service twice ( both as helpful as they could be) and took the computer into the apple store to have the hardware checked out. All of the hardware checked out. They installed Lion in place which is useless to our family as the last backup was done under Mtn. Lion in safe mode. I reinstalled everthing from the backup and can work from safe mode but this has its obvious disadvantages.
What happens is when (if I get this far) I log in,  the desktop graphics go "crazy" and eventually the computer locks up. I have reinstalled Mtn. Lion numerous times with no improvement to the situation. I post this out of frustration and hoped for answers. That $20 download is not worth the cost of the loss of  use of the Office programs, the Adobe programs not to mention photos, teaching documents, scouting documents, family documents, music, that are all somewhat in limbo because of this mess.
As a long time Apple product user I have not come to expect this kind of problem from Apple products. I have not been advised of how I will know when a "fix" has been arrived at leaving me further in the dark and discouraged. School is starting up on Monday and this computer gets a lot of use from both a teacher and a High School student.
Apple, you said that our particular model was compatible with Mtn. Lion. It has been checked out at the local Apple store and everything found to be OK. Our backup is under Mtn. Lion (running in Safe Mode). We have no way to go back to Snow Leopard to retrieve and run all of our previous programs. So Apple, the ball is 100% in your court. When are we going to have the solution?

Well I believe I was able to clear those two programs out. I still had the dmg files with each having an uninstall. VirtualBox was a clean uninstall and while the Palm SDK would seem to be gone it was not as clean an uninstall, having repeated it several times.
I have since restarted three times, once after pulling the plug from the back and waiting for several minutes. One time I thought it was going to be stable but after about 2 minutes it started with the graphics problem again and then finally locked up.
Could Skype or Flash have something to do with this?

  • I have just started with apple tv. I rented and downloaded a movie from itunes on my macbook pro and tried to watch it. I got the movie up, but it only played a picture for about 3 seconds and then stopped, also no sound? What am I doing wrong?

Please help me play a rented itunes video on apple tv. Have a pictue and movie runs for about three seconds, and then stops. No sound? But I can play any music from my library with sound?

Is the movie still buffering? you may have a slow internet connection. Music files require far less bandwidth than movies.

  • "Error Importing Library: The library could not be imported because it is from an out of date version of Aperture 3. Please upgrade the library to the latest version of Aperture 3 and try again." Help.

I'm getting the following Error message when trying to import some of my folders from my external hard drive. This is not happening with all of my photos. How can I access my photos? I now have Aperture 3.5, but I'm guessing I exported those with an earlier version of Aperture 3? I have a Mac Book, OS X 10.9
    Thanks!

My advice is for libraries, not vaults.
To be able to use a vault, you have to restore the library from the vault and then open the restored library.
To restore the entire library from an external backup disk
Connect the hard disk drive that contains the most up-to-date vault to your computer and open Aperture.
Choose File > Vault > Restore Library. The Restore Library dialog appears.
Choose Select Source Vault from the Source Vault pop-up menu.
If necessary, navigate to the vault from which you want to restore, then click Select.
Click Restore, then click Restore again.

  • I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new Ipome and Ipad.  and Ipad. Now I'm told I need to upgrade my operating system. The apple store gave me conflicting instructions. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new IPhone and Ipad. Now I'm told at the apple store that I need to upgrade my operationg system. They said they couldn't help and gave me conflicting advice about what to do. Any ideas? Thanks you!

There are three models of MacBook that comprise the 'macbook 4.1' category, and each of them a little different; however other than 'macbook 4.1' the other thing they have in common is they all are considered Early 2008. Two are white, one black, polycarbonate case, Core2Duo 2.1GHz, 2.4GHz white, 2.4GHz black.
So if you can determine which one, if any of these, is the model build year and spec you have, that would be handy. Did you tell whoever you spoke to the serial number of your computer, so they'd know by looking up the specs to see what the supported maximum RAM upgrade capacity was, and other minimum requirements to make any upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 at all?
If you have the serial number you can do a lookup to 'indentify by serial number' online, and use that information to determine if the computer needs even more RAM to take it past the minimum for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then get it ready to upgrade (via paid download from App Store, Snow Leopard gets you that far) and see what the next supported OS X full upgrade would be for the hardware limitations on that old MacBook.
If your MacBook IS a 4.1 build, the highest OS X it could run if it has the 2.4GHz cpu, is Lion 10.7.5. That would be an upgrade from the App store, available to OS X 10.6.8+ computers that access it online. And I kind of doubt how supported a newest iphone etc may be in lion.
everymac.com has a fair amount of information across many years of Apple computing hardware...
Here's the three MacBooks that share the 4.1 designation; first shipped with as much as 1GB RAM upgrade and the other two only a 2GB RAM*, (one white/one black color) according to this information...
    • MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.1 13" (White-08) 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo (T8100)
    • MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" (White-08) 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (T8300)
    • MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" (Black-08) 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (T8300)
    ...as seen here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html
*But according to MacTracker (free: download database) http://mactracker.ca
these MacBooks can use more RAM in aftermarket specs as much as:
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
To get more information use a service such as this...
    •identify by serial number:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
The Apple? store or whoever you talked, to may have been as accurate as they could be without further research. Could be you may have a newer or older MacBook, which would change whatever later OS X it could run past 10.6.8. And to go past Snow Leopard, you need to download the last bits for 10.6.x to be able to go and get any later upgrade. The ones that may let a newest iphone or ipad work with it, are past SL10.6.8
Anyway, as you further verify the model build year and configuration specifications, report back.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How to create Install OS X Yosemite for MacBook Pro Retina Early-2015

HELP ME! Unable to Boot from Install OS X Yosemite USB
I just bought a new MacBook Pro Retina 13" Early-2015 and wish to install Windows 8.1. I created Windows Install USB using Boot Camp and Installing Windows. Unfortunately, I erase all SSD by accident.
I created Install OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 USB as guided at https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht201372 using my MacBook Pro Retina Late-2013.
This USB works perfectly on my MacBook Pro Retina Late-2013 but I am unable to boot from Yosemite 10.10.2 Install USB on my new MacBook Pro Retina Early-2015. The white stop sign appeared on black screen all the time. I am stuck here and can't reinstall OS X Yosemite on my new MacBook.
I also can't use Recovery boot as the SSD had been erased.
Please help to show me how to create OS X Install USB that can use with my MacBook Pro Retina 13" Early-2015

Boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.
It should result in a display with a revolving globe.
If you follow the directions, it will connect you to the Apple servers and you will be able to install the original OSX that came with your MBP.
You will need a solid Internet connection.
    Ciao.

  • Could the late 2008 MBP take more than 8GB of RAM?

I just recently upgraded the RAM on my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro from 2GB to 8GB, and this sucker's running like a sports car!    So this has me wondering.  I have babied this thing, and it is plenty powerful for me but what happens 2-3 more years down the road?  I had read that the late 2008 models originally could only handle up to 6GB but do to a fimware update in April of 2010 that capacity was upped to 8GB.  Is there ever a chance that the RAM capacity could go up again?  If not, why?

you're probably stuck at 8GB - i wish i can upgrade my late 08 Macbook to more than 8GB - tried it, but never worked - gave it to my niece instead.
i don't really think you'd use more if you're just running normal apps.
have a look at the image below - that's my macbook with 16GB and have 9 apps running - see how much I have free?
by the time you need more than 8GB - you'll probably buy a new macbook by then - do remember, new macbooks are still selling with 4GB of RAM installed in them.
    good luck

  • Is their any other Processor better then a 2.9ghz intel core i7 that i could look into. I'm looking to make the computer faster & already upgraded the memory from 8GB to 16GB not realy noticing a difference

Is their any other Processor better then a 2.9GHZ Intel Core i7 that i could look into. I'm looking to make the computer faster & already upgraded the Ram from 8GB to 16GB and i'm really not noticing any difference actually it seems to be the same as it was before. Any help with this?

You will only notice a performance improvement if you haven't got enough RAM to use the applications you need. If you had a lot of free RAM before, you won't notice any difference now.
If you already have your computer, you can only replace the processor if you replace the logic board. Your computer requires a specific logic board, so you shouldn't replace it and you have to stay with the same processor. Apart from RAM, the only part you can upgrade is the hard drive. What will make an improvement is a SSD drive, if you haven't got one

  • Error downloading and installing Yosemite

Hello everyone, I have a problem. I downloaded about 5 times yosemite (5,16gb) and all 5 times downloaded gave me the same mistake at the time of 'installation
    this one :
"Failed to verify this copy of the installation of OS X Yosemite. copying may have been damaged or altered during the download. Chatter copy of the application and go to Buy a Mac App Store to download a new copy. "
I also formatted 'hd (m500 Crucial SSD 240 gb) then rebooted and pressed CMD + R for the clean install, but nothing ever fails, the installation stops and says it can not extract the package ESSENTIAL.pkg. What can I do? I have a late 2010 mbp with 8gb corsair ram and the ssd above and the latest version of OS X Mavericks. Thanks in advance

I had the exact same problem. I was monitoring the logs, and got the same message about the essential package not being extracted.
Restarted and repeated about 4 times.
I gave up and went to bed. 5 hours later I came back and searched for help. One site said that disconnecting external drives solved the problem. Another said sometimes memory flags needed to be clear.
So the only drive I could disconnect was the LAN cable - so I removed that, and switched WIFI off. I restarted after this - and the installation process progressed past the previous error. All in all - it took about 42 minutes to complete that phase, then it re-started again. I am not sure if it was removing the internet LAN connect (and WIFI) - or whether the system being in suspended mode (while I was asleep) reset the memory flags. Either way, the installation has completed, and I now have Yosemite running on my macbook pro. I hope this helps you!

  • Unable to download OS X Yosemite

Trying to download OS X Yosemite on my MacBook Pro. Currently using Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Towards the end of the download I get the following error:
If I select Retry, the error pops up again after a few mins. If I hit cancel it takes me back to App Store and asks me to login again.
Anyone else experience this? Any way I can upgrade to Mavericks first?

Had same issue as a Lion 10.7.5 user.  Spent all day, finally found this and it worked for me.
SOLVED… FOR THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE A MAVRICKS LAPTOP LAYING AROUND.   (Mavricks users don't have this issue)
Thanks Doug Grassey, found solution in another thread. (Noted below)
    From Lion 10.7.5
From preferences, set up a new user with admin privileges.
Log out, and back in with the new account.
Go to app store, log in using your normal apple id
download Yosemite.  It will finish, and auto start.  from doc, click on app, go to options, show in finder (it's in your app folder) "Install OS X Yosemite.app"
Move to external drive or Flash, log back into your normal account.  Done.  I suggest you create "How to Make an OS X Yosemite Boot Installer USB Drive" ((http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/16/make-os-x-yosemite-boot-install-drive/))
Apple: Really…. You could not share this work around for all of us Lion users in a visible way, we have to hunt for hours.  This has caused many of us a lot of grief.
Doug GrasseyOct 17, 2014 4:56 PM Re: Yosemite - Application could not be downloaded
Re: Yosemite - Application could not be downloadedin response to rbaker79
I solved the problem with the help of Apple Support. The issue was cased by a corrupt file that prevented any further attempts at downloading. Using "Accounts" under "System Preferences" I created a new temporary account. I called it "test' with administrative privileges. I logged on using that account name and successfully download Yosemite. Afterwards I deleted the temporary account and re-logged on with my original account and all was well...

  • I have LabView but I do not have the Calibration and Configuration Palette, and I could not download it, how can I download it or if i cannot, can I work with the NI-DAQ Calibration_1200?

I have read in a tutorial for the board 1200 that I can calibrate it with the Calibration and Configuration Palette in LabVIEW, but I do not have them and I could not download it to access its libraries, so I can only download the NI-DAQ software,What's my best choice and if it is to download the palette with its libraries, how can download it with them?I'd appreciate your answers

If you wish to use your 1200 device in LabVIEW, you must download and install NI-DAQ. When you install NI-DAQ, it will ask you if you would like to install support for LabVIEW. By installing this support, you will then have access to the DAQ pallette in LabVIEW. The DAQ pallette requires that you have NI-DAQ installed.
For more information on installing and using your device, you can refer to the DAQ Quick Start Guide. You can download it from:
