Could I use a USB hub to connection both a printer and an external hard drive to the time capsule?

I am planning on purchasing a new router. The Time Capsule looks amazing. However, I have Macs and PC's in my how. So, I need to know if I can connect a printer (for all computers) and external hard drive (for the PC's) by way of a USB hub on the Time Capsule. I've read that you can do this with the Air-Extreme.

Couple of comments:
You will need to use a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to the USB port on the Time Capsule
The hard drive for use with the PCs will not be compatible for use with the Time Capsule if it is currently formatted for Windows NTFS, which it likely may be if you have been using with the PCs.
Same info applies to the AirPort Extreme.
The following hard drive formats would be supported:
Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
MS DOS FAT32

And are you using a powered USB hub? The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you almost always need to use a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply.

A HDD attached to the Time Capsule (TC) will not automatically back it up, nor can you configure Time Machine to do so. However, you can use the AirPort Utility to archive the contents of your TC's internal HDD to this attached drive.

Sorry, but no. The Time Capsule is a network drive, so it must be connected to a network using an Ethernet or wireless connection. The USB port on the Time Capsule is there only to add additional storage capacity.

Yes, you would configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode to do this. If you do not need the wireless capability, you can turn the wireless off on the Time Capsule.

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.

Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason. At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups. At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.

But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

Time Machine cannot back up a hard drive that is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
If you want to backup the hard drive, it must be connected to your Mac to be included in Time Machine backups. Additional settings will need to be made if you do this, so post back for details if you need them.
If you cannot connect the drive to your Mac, then you will need to use another backup program like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper or Chronosync to backup the hard drive to the Time Capsule.

Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

She has a Time Capsule where the Wi-fi base station quit working, but the hard drive may be OK.
She bought an Airport Express to use as a wi-fi router.

It can be done but is very messy. That is assuming the TC is still functional which I kind of doubt.. the wifi is seldom the only thing that will die .. so whatever problems it has the wifi would be the least of it.
Anyway.. do a factory reset to get started.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
If the LED is not lit then the TC is dead, not just the wireless.

The idea is to set the TC to provide router function.. and the computer plugged in by ethernet to as a second network.. but there are rules on how this is done which I have explained in that thread.
I notice that Mountain Lion deals better with order of network priority than Snow Leopard used to .. so it might not need to have manually set gateway and dns.. although I would still recommend it. It simply stops the second network causing issues.
It is much easier to simply purchase an external drive and plug that in.
It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than using the TC for TM anyway.
Plus a lot of the later machines no longer have ethernet ports.. and using dongles is far from neat.. although thunderbolt to ethernet is IMHO necessary accessory for anyone without ethernet.

you need to format the external drive. To do that (if haven't got anything important on that external hard drive at the moment) select finder > Go menue > then utilities > open disk utility > then select you external hard drive and partition it to the size you want and format it the Mac os extened journaled.
Once you have done the above, re open time machine from system preferences and brows the disk. Time Machine will then re format it to its own format and start backing up.....

I own a Macbook Air and am using a 2TB Time Capsule router. I am currently using for automatic backups for my Macbook Air.
I also own 2 PC laptops for the rest of the family. Would it be possible to use an external hard drive connected to the USB port of the Time Capsule as a network drive for the PCs? I want to share files between the two PCs.

Yes, you can do that.. although it is not necessarily as straight forward as you might think it should be.
1. The TC has to be running SMB compatible names. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
2. The disk must be formatted to file system the TC can read. HFS+ or Fat32.. but the HFS+ is vastly superior.. the actual format is irrelevant from sharing point of view as it is still shared via SMB to the network.
3. It is slow.. half the speed of the same drive plugged into your computer.. although if the connection is over wireless that is probably irrelevant.
4. You might need a powered hub to get the drive to work.. Apple underpower the USB.. and even a powered disk still won't work.
5. There are some issues with the TC getting the USB drive to work.. too many factors to say you will have issues or not.. but be aware this is not as straight forward as it could be. or should be.
6. If you want to share files.. you can always share them directly.. pc to pc or pc to mac.. there is no necessity to do it via a network store.. You can also use the 2TB internal drive.. create a disk image and you can then store you data in that. Internal drive is much more reliable and faster.

Correct connection of an external hard drive to a Time Capsule

I received a 500GB Time Capsule and 1 TB Western Digital "My Book" Essential external hard drive for my birthday. My current wireless system consist of a Airport Extreme with a Maxtor 250GB external hard drive and usb printer connected to the Airport through a powered usb hub.
I changed out the Airport with my Time Capsule and simply added the WD "My Book" through the powered usb hub, which still has the Maxtor and usb printer connected. Everything seemed to be working great. But....
I want to save my iTunes library on the WD "My Book". When I click and drag iTunes files from my Maxtor to the WD they will not show up as being on the WD (through the wireless setup), but I do see them when I hard wire the WD via usb to my MacBook Pro.
What am I missing? How do I see my iTunes files through my wireless setup?

Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen.
Click Go > Network
Double click the Time Capsule icon, then double click the icon representing the drive to mount it on the Mac's desktop. It is named "Data" unless you have changed it
You can drag/drop files to the "Data" icon on the desktop
235 GB is going to take forever if you try to do this using wireless. If at all possible, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
Even using Ethernet, you are probably looking at 10-12 hours for the file transfer. All bets are off with wireless only, but a guess would be several days....or even more.

As Tesserax says, no, Time Machine backups can't "span" two volumes.
But . . . if 2 TB isn't large enough to keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups, you can connect the USB drive and back one of the Macs up to it, instead of the TC's internal HD.
Your best bet is probably to leave the old backups for that Mac on the TC's internal disk, until you're sure you don't need them anymore, since you can view and restore from them via the +*Browse ...+* option (per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions).
It's a hassle, and will take a looooong time, but you could copy the sparse bundle for one of the Macs to the USB drive and continue backing-up to it. See #18 in the FAQ.
