Could my CPU be dead?

I can't get my beloved beige to start up. The power supply comes on but no chime and the hard drive only makes a little noise before going quiet.
I have two drives in the computer. At first one drive was acting squirrelly. Then while trying to do maintenence, it wouldn't boot to it. Eventually I couldn't even get the 2nd drive to boot.
I've checked all the usuals. I got a new battery in case. all cards are seated. I hadn't been inside the box for a long time, so I'm sure I didn't move anything.
I worried at getting no chime.
Any ideas? Is my poor ol' tired, overclocked and overworked chip dead?
Al

Well, I actually raised my computer from the dead. But, things are still all messed up. I'm on my copy of 10.2 right now. It's been a long time since I used this OS. I just needed to take a break and get back online with my Apple before I continue on anymore.
I took all of my cards, memory, rom, and personality card out, and cleaned the contacts, and re- installed everything back to the way it was before it started acting up.
I got it booted and into a volume with OS 9. Then things start acting up again. I can't get anything to boot from CD. The OS 9 volume will give a warning that the disk is not readable, do I want to initialize...I cancel, wait a minute or so, and then the same box, but suggesting 134GB size instead of 4.3 like before. Cancel, wait a minute, then it boots into 9. My Panther volume shows as untitled. 2 other volumes on that disk show as unmounted. All of my volumes on this disk show up.
I'm going to try and launch Disk Warrior again but from this OS 10.2 volume.
My problem started with XPF. It won't synchronize. It says it's copying the mach_kernel, then stops with a dialog box saying could not complete your request because there was a problem copying the mach_kernel.... hmmm.
I used to be able to use XPF to boot right into Disk Warrior. Not now.
Any ideas?
At least I'm getting some clues now. And, at least I'm back on my beloved Mac again! even if it is in 10.2. It was only giving me the power supply and nothing else!? I'm not sure what fixed that part, but, I love it. This thing is like an old ford. Just keep tinkering with it. It ain't dead yet..!
I'm gonna try and get DW launched. If nothing else. I'll hook the PC up again later to see if I have any replies.
Thanks,
Allen

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum should beep if the cpu is dead?

I have a Neo2 Platinum and a 3500+. When I try to start the computer the fan starts to spin but the monitor is black. The computer doesnt make any beeping sound. I know its either the CPU or the motherboard that is broken. Should the motherboard make any sound if the CPU is dead?
My D-bracket says "Early Chipset Initialization" and "Bios Sign On" (shows info about logo, cpu brand name etc..)
Depends on how I start up the computer (psu power switch or button)
The problem started a few weeks ago. The computer made lots of reboots and now I cant even access bios. Ive replaced all other components (ram, psu, HDD) but nothing happens. So is there any way to find out if its the motherboard or the cpu?

Ok thanks for trying to help me but its not the HDD's. Its the motherboard or the cpu. I just dont know which one.
your CPU is not dead for sure.
try barabone setup,(leave only basic parts which is necessary to boot) and Clear CMOS Guide(remove power cord from PSU before proceed).
test with one stick of memory only.

  • Could my emac be dead

I came home and i could see my emac was not on, but my external HD was on.
The emac seems dead. I cant get it to start or even make any sound.
I tried different outlets but to no luck.
Could my Emac just have died?
I keep trying the start up button--but there is nothing but absolute silence?
it appears that it need CPR but I dont know how to try and boot it up
i cant get any drive or anything to turn on, no keys no keyboard no holding down the power on button is working
    please help
    thanks
    so much

Before you go farther, what is the exact model of your eMac? There were quite a few with USB 2.0 and 1.25G processors that had very serious logic board problems. Some of the non-cataloged 1G eMacs with USB2.0 (the "Edu-eMac") were also affected. There was a repair extension program but it is now expired.
    Affected serial number range:
    G8412xxxxxx - G8520xxxxxx, YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx or VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx.
As your computer seems locked up, you'll need to find the serial number manually. See this Apple document for instructions:
eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model
If your serial number starts with the letter "R", the unit was a refurb and that list of serial numbers will not work for you.
If you are in the US, there is a company in Oregon that does a flat-fee repair of the problem that is must less expensive than getting a new logic board. If you find you have an affected model, post back and I will find that company's link.

  • Could my CPU temps really be this low?

Ok i just put my new stuff in yesterday (e6600 with a Zalman 9500 and a Spirit 2 on the northbridge) and my temps have bee reading really really low. I have also oced it to 3ghz. On a average doing normal computer stuff its running at 22-25c and i checked it after playing CSS for about a hour and it was at 27. I just really don't see how it could be this low. I'm wondering if somehow the sensors got damaged when i was installing my HSF?

Ok i just tested something. I used Prime95 and literally the second i click start the temp shot up to 30c and climed to about 34. Now the SECOND i turned it off it went down to 23 and went all the way down to 21.

Be proud, very proud. What kinda case are you using? Plus ambient room temperature?
I have the Viper 2 from XG. http://techgage.com/article/xg_viper_2/ Don't know my room temp but i know its pretty cool in here. I have a window AC in my room and i keep my door shut all of the time so it stays really cool in here. The temp sensor for the case that just lays in there reads 20c. I just bought this little 12 dollar PCI slot fan thats blows air out of my case and it dropped my case temp by good 5c.

I was just wondering if you checked the fuse in either the PC power lead or the extension/4 socket adapter?
If you used the original power lead then the new PSU would fail too...same with the adapter.
I have seen 4 way multi adapter fuses go often if the total load exceeds the rating of the adapter, and with PCs needing more and more power, this is getting far more common recently.
    Just a thought.

The cpu of my computer always goes to 80 ℃,is it safe?
    This question was solved.

That is a bit on the high side.  Get a can of compressed air and clean out your fan.  Turn the machine off and use the can of air in the reverse direction of the normal air flow.  Dust/lint/hair build up on the inside of the heatsink near the fan blades.  Buy and use a notebook cooling pad. Don't block the intake or exhaust of the fan.  If that doesn't do it, and the machine isn't under warrantee, you will have to have someone put better thermal paste on your cpu and video chip.

  • Could the battery be dead after one year?

Without any warning my one year old Ipad 2 won't power up.  Shouldn't the battery have stopped holding a full charge before that happened?  I have not dropped the iPad or had any accident with it.  So I'm very surprised that it has stopped working.

You know anything is possible right? And not all iPads are capable of living for 2 - 9 years.
Have you tried charging it while starting it?
Have you tried contacting the "Apple"?
Have you tried going to any nearby Apple Store and check if your iPad needs battery replacement?
If all of these suggestions does not work, well it's bad news for you buddy.

  • RMA and still same problems! (Neo2 Plat)

I was having the system shut down over night problem where nothing woudl turn on, no fans on anything, not even the powersupply.  So I tested my Powersupply on a friends computer and it was dead and I also tried numerous power supplies on my motherboard and it was dead alos.  So I had the power supply and motherboard  RMA'd and got it put back together today and I am still having the same problems!!!!@ !
I hooked up the CPU, ram, and video cards just to see if it would start up; nope, I hear a crackling noise coming from the brand new powersupply, but the fans start spinning on the powersupply but nothing else.  What else could be wrong, could my CPU be dead???  I only hear the crackling noise when I have the 12V connector plugged into the motherboard and this is where the CPU gets power from correct?  Could I be in need of a new processor?  I tried my ram video in other systems with no issues so its seems the cpu is the only thing left......@#$%^
    SYSTEM SPECS:

    PDP 512x2 TCCD RAM
    ATI 9800pro
    2x Western Digital HDD 80gb
    NEC DVD-RW
    Lite-On CD-RW

I had a similar issue.  Shut it down over night.  Next morning I removed the HSF to install AS5.  When I put it back together, It wouldn't boot.  The D-bracket at 4 red LED's, which means "CPU damaged or not installed properly".
So I sent my CPU to AMD for testing, and It wouldn't post for them either so they sent me a new one.  RMA'd the MB also.  Got the "new" MB/CPU back together and have had no problems since.
What does teh D-bracket hang on?

  • ARRGGHH!! Dead CPU? Or Mobo?

OK... rather than explaining again what's happened, can anyone have a quick scan at my thread at the AMD forums and maybe offer me any advice or suggestions? Basically, I think my CPU is dead, but I can't tell for sure just yet. Could it be the mobo?
Thank you in advance for any help. I really need to get to the bottom of this one because I am broke and can't really afford a new CPU, mobo, or both...
    Here's the thread: http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=48642

It's OK, I got it working again. No amount of clearing CMOS and switching the jumper was working, but I followed some advice I found on this board about holding the Insert key as the system was powered on. It booted for the first time in 2 days! I'm happy now. Cheers for the help.

  • Dead Apple TV

I have a dead Apple TV that is out of warranty. Does anyone know how much this thing would cost to be fixed or is there some other use for it. It seems like the video is out on it. It was showing a lot of dots on the screen and distortion in the menus. Then the thing would go completely black if I was doing anything like playing a podcast. It is the first generation one. Anyone have a suggestion of what I could use this thing for? I am sure there is a hard drive in it at the very least right?

I see - as the things heats up the video problems begin.
I can't see that the hard drive heating up would cause video glitches in itself though if it were producing excessive heat it might cause other components to malfunction. Trouble is this could be CPU, graphic chip, system logic board, memory etc etc
You might want to open AppleTv and check that the small fan that circulates air inside is still working.

  • Sorry another Motherboard dead issue....

Right, i have MSI 865PE Neo2 mobo, with Prescott 3.0ghz, sudenly a few days ago my pc crashed and wasn't turing back on, whenever i tried the case light would flash once and thats all.
I initially thought it was PSU, replaced this, but same problem occurs.
Then i removed each power supply lead one at a time, first the CPU 4pin ATX, then switched on the power and the mobo seem to switch on fine but i dont hear my hard drive and the monitor does not repond. The when i plug the 4pin ATX back in nothing happens...
I've got my CPU check by a mate and he confirmed this is dead :(
What i need to know is how can i check the mobo out? i dont have a CPU to check this.
Also can my hard drive also be dead.

You can slave your hard drive off a spare connector in your friends computer to see if it is OK.
As far as I know you are going to need a cpu to test the board. The fact your cpu is dead could indicate it was bad, or you overclocked it, or it could indicate that your power supply died and took out the cpu, possibly the drive, possible the board, and possibly the ram.
What were the amp ratings on the +3.3, +5 and +12v lines on your power supply? They are shown on the label.

  • Neo2 stops on CPU initialization

Awhile ago I built a mostly new computer, got everything running great, and then shipped it to college, like I've done in years past with no problems. This year, UPS picked the box with my computer in it to kick across the country instead of ship. They destroyed a few parts, most of which were 4 years old, the only one that matters being my A8V. This gave me the chance to replace it with a K8N Neo2 Platinum. So last week I set it all up and everything ran great for a few days.
Last Saturday I turned it on in the morning and it wouldn't post anything, or beep. The LEDs I got were red, green, green, red, for processor initialization. I did everything I could think of, stripped it down, reseated CPU, ran mobo out of case, reset BIOS, nothing worked. I gave up for the day and put it all back together. A few hours later, I tried turning it on again, and everything worked fine! I didn't understand what happened, it just started working again. But the same damn thing happened this morning when I turned it on. If I take out the RAM, then I get one long beep over and over and red, green, red, red, as expected. So I thought maybe the RAM died. I took the RAM and vid card to a friends A64 (unfortunately it's 754 so I can't test the CPU), and both worked fine. So now I'm thinking the CPU is dead. But I just don't understand how it worked fine, then died, then worked fine, and now it's dead again?! Also, until I hear from UPS whether or not they're going to pay for everything, I can't just go buy another 3800+ and try it.
    Here are the specs:
    350W PSU
    Athlon 64 3800+
    K8N Neo2 Platinum
    2x512 Corsair XMS-3200 CL2
    Geforce4 Ti4600
    160gig SATA 7200rpm Seagate
    nu-tech DVD-RW
I'm wondering what some of you think, could it be the CPU, or the new mobo? Any other suggestions?

    An update:
After RMAing the board a couple weeks ago everything has been working great. I think you guys need to stop pointing at the power supply for every problem. Yeah, sometimes it's the problem, but it seems like every time somebody says they have a problem somebody responds with "it's your power supply". My power supply is only 350 watts with 15 amps on the 12v rail and it works fine. I'm going to get a 6800GT soon, I have a feeling the power supply won't be enough then. But just for the record, here's the specs again for my system, perfectly stable, with my weak power supply:
    Athlon 64 3800+
K8N Neo2 with whatever BIOS it came with
    1GB Corsair TWINX-3200 CL2
    VistionTek Geforce4 Ti 4600
    200GB Seagate 7200rpm SATA
    160GB Seagate 7200rpm SATA
    Nu-Tech DVD+RW

  • How do I tell if it's mobo or cpu?

    Hi,
My comp has decided to randomly die. I have a KT4 Ultra (Pure Version), and when it boots up, the D-LEDs indicate that the CPU is dead / not installed properly. I ordered a new CPU - identical XP2400+, in hopes that it was the cpu. The new one does not work either. Is there any chance that it could be the motherboard that has died? Or would the mobo not even start-up - i.e. cpu fan, northbridge fan, and D-LEDs still work.
Am I just unlucky when it comes to CPU's - as I'm already on my 3rd XP2400+ - both previous cpus were faulty!
    Help!

1.- I didn't mean hardware overcloking work; I meant some software or bios changing, a new program, a new hardware install...
2.- If D Leds and fans are working, there are less posibilities of a fault Mobo.
3.- Neither 420 W. nor high prices tells something about P.Su. quality. Tell Dif. Amps to 3.3v. 5v. 12v. and combined 3.5-5v.
4.- I can assure you that no one who did bad heatsink-fan installation thought he had, since they turned on the PC. 8)
