  • Error: Not Enough RAM to Open Small Files

    MacBook5,2
    Macintosh OSX 10.6.3
    4GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M - 256MB
    Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended (11.0.1)
I am rendering TIFF files out of Maya that are 11880 x 3400 pixels.  The file size ranges between 100 - 160 MB.  Whenever I attempt to open one of these images in Photoshop, I receive this error: "Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough RAM."
I just ran Adobe Update and I have all the latest updates.
I deleted my Photoshop preferences and restarted Photoshop.
I have my Scratch disk set to an internal solid state disk with 30 GB of free space.
    I have Photoshop's RAM set to 3000MB.
Despite all of this, I still receive the "Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough RAM" error every time I attempt to open the images rendered out of Maya.
The images from Maya are completely normal 8bit TIFF files with neither an alpha channel nor a depth channel.  I can successfully open them in After Effects, but this is useless to me.  I need to edit them individually in Photoshop.
Photoshop's error is clearly not due to file size.  I have HDR panoramas with dimensions greater than 11880 x 3400 that go up to 1GB in file size that I can open and work on in Photoshop without any problem.
Why is Photoshop not playing nicely with these TIFF images?

I still want to a solution to the above problem, but I have found a temporary work-around using After Effects.
Import the image into After Effects and then save the image as another file using Composition --> Save Frame as --> File.
As I said earlier, After Effects is capable of reading the files that are coming out of Maya even though Photoshop is not.
When I use After Effects to save the image as a TIFF, Photoshop is now able to open the new TIFF file.
This, however, is only a temporary work-around.  It is not optimal to resave the image before I start working on it.  I am probably loosing some precious data in the After Effects conversion.  As a matter of fact, the images tend to be 40MB smaller in size when I export them through After Effects, even though I am using the same file type, no compression, and still 8 bits.
Now, back to the problem: What is wrong with Photoshop?

  • Photoshop CS4 - Not enough RAM to open a file???

I get this wonderful "Not Enough RAM" message, while trying to open a big TIF file (over 100 Mb). Till now it happened with big files that were saved in Windows. All other programs, including Photoshop CS3 opens the files just great. Resaving files in any other app helps, but this thing is a joke - I'm thinking going back to CS3... : (
    Thanks.

According to many different discussions, nobody, even Apple, can really tell If it is necessary to defragment OS X drives,
This is not about defragmenting the drive.  I am attempting to make you aware that you will always have fragmentation on your drive in a one-drive laptop, no matter what you do.
Photoshop needs to find a single, contiguous, non-fragmented chunk of drive space to create the scratch disk.  On a one-drive machine you will never, ever know exactly what the largest, unfragmented chunk of drive space you have at any given instant is, but you can bet your life on the fact that it will be a lot less than the total amount the Finder shows you.
As I just typed, your drive will inevitably be fragmented even before you boot up, and the swap files of the OS will further fragmented once it's running.
You can use an external drive for scratch, just make sure it's formatted as Mac HFS+ Extended and NOT case-sensitive.  Do a Get Info (Command I) on the icon of the external hard drive in the Finder and check "Ignore Ownership of this Drive" if necessary.
Photoshop creates the scratch drive the instant you go to open an existing file or create a new one, setting its size on assumptions it makes based on your workflow history, not just the size of the file you're opening.  Thus, it is possible that the scratch disk sizes for CS3 and for CS4 will be different on your machine.  This will be the case if you have worked on bigger files or with more layers. etc, on one version than on the other one, even for the very same file.  The difference could be dramatic.

  • Not enough RAM error while running batch command

Bug in photoshop creative cloud. When using the "batch" editing feature after 5 images being edited the same way (batch processing) an error code pops up. "Error:not enough ram" and then i have to restart which does the same thing over and over again. Running a quad core i7 1tb hard drive 16gb of memory so there should be no error code. Help please and if anyone has a fix besides and update could you email me at <edit to remove email address> Thanks! Cant post this in the photoshop.com community because of another bug. I have done everything from creating new scratch disks off of other hdd's allotting more ram to go to psd (since i can only use 3255mb because of a useless limiter on photoshop) to rebooting computer and nothing helps at all.

This error is somewhat generic.  Can mean not enough free disk space, insufficient page file, ram, or buffer error.

  • Could not use the Brush tool because there is not enough RAM? Photoshop CS6?

That and I couldn't even save a project I was working because (There was not enough RAM)
My computer is running Windows 7 with 4 (3 usable) GB Ram, Pentium Dual Core; @ 2.00 Ghz
-I have allocated all possible RAM to CS6
-I set 6 scratch disks (the first two are 1TB external HDD)
-I fixed the file peeling so that there is quite a bit of it
    - I have Photoshop CS5 still installed (it works fine) as well as Elements 9, I don't know if that could be a problem or not.
I like the new features of CS6 especially the new 5000 px brush, but half the time I can't even use it because of this problem! What can I do to fix it?
I mostly use it for digital art so the pictures get to be at most 5000-3300 pixels. I get the problem mostly when I use brushes at 5000 px. CS5 works just fine and it uses the scratch disks I emplace, it seems as though CS6 doesn't even use them.

Obviously, you are running Win7 32-bit OS. Is that correct?
What are the full specs. of your Windows Virtual Memory, the Page File? What is its size, location, and is it static, or dynamically managed?
With a 32-bit OS, I would set the Page File to a fast, internal, physical HDD, set it to be statically managed, and size it to about 2.5x the installed RAM (~ 10GB in your case, and with a 32-bit OS).
That should provide more resources, and by being statically managed, save you CPU cycles too.
I also agree that you do NOT want to allocate all RAM to PS, as the OS needs some too. That will be counter-productive.
    Good luck,

  • Getting "could not...because not enough (RAM) often

Hey guys, I think  my Photoshop CC 64 bit has something wrong with it. Maybe it was one of the updates I've done. I have windows 8, intel i5 4th gen, 16 gb ram and a junk graphic card at work. I just turned on my computer for the day and opened my file which is big, I've been working with files this size for years, 1.5gb and smaller. This file says it's 1.14gb in photoshop. I opened this file did a few things and now it won't save becase "not enough (RAM).
In my task manager it tells me my photoshop is using 563.2mb of memory. In photoshop I have 10,917mb allocated for it to use. I have 535BG of free space on my hard drive and I have an external USB SSD drive plugged in that I'm using as another scratch disk. This has been happening a lot over the last month. I haven't installed anything new and this morning the only things I have open are outlook, Photoshop, Lync (internal messenger for work) and word with one doc open. Photoshop has the one file open. I have the new 4th gen processor with GPU on it, not sure if I'm set up right for that or if that would even be related to this problem...any suggestions?

OK.  So you are stuck because you need to save your file, and can't close Photoshop or restart the computer until you have done so?
What do you see in Preferences > Performance?  How much of your 16Gb is available, and how much are you using?
Is that external SSD still marked as scratch space?  I believe that you have to reinstate external drives as Scratch space every time you restart the computer, unless those drives are mounted.
How much Scratch space is allocated?  You are going to need a huge amount of Scratch with a file that size.
What do you see in Task Manager > Performance tab?  How much RAM is used?
My best guess is that your problem is insufficient Scratch space, and that external drive is no longer allocated.  Check the above and come back.
    Good luck.

  • Illustrator can't open my saved file because there is not enough RAM.  Can someone help me?

I was working all last night on artwork using Illustrator and now I cannot get it to open.  The message reads that there is not enough RAM.  This is after a long pause of waiting for illustrator to read the file.  The file is 37 MB large, so it doesn't seem that daunting for my MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM.  Any thoughts?  Other files open with no problem.
After I hit ok on the message (Not enough RAM), it seems to be trying to work on something in the Illustrator file and then repeats saying there is not enough RAM.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, there was a message on my file that suggested I save it with the PDF compatibility, but I am not able to do that till I get in.  I am at the Apple store now to see if they can help me out.  It would be sad to lose all that inspiration I put into my artwork.
Thanks for your help, I will need to be careful how much I load on one Illustrator file in the future.

  • Problem with printing - could not print because not enough RAM CS5

I am using Photoshop CS5 on a new iMac running OSX 10.9.4.  Each time I try to print from Photoshop I get a message saying 'Could not print because there is not enough RAM'. There is plenty of RAM, and the message appears even if I try to print an image a mere 100KB!  With my previous iMac I could print without any problems. Any ideas how to put this right? Thanks

Do you know exactly how much RAM Photoshop needs for printing? Just an idea: the RAM assigned to Photoshop is limited in the preferences. In case this setting has been changed to a small value, you might not realise it when working with images, but when doing extra stuff. Then, what about cache folders and probably limited space for cache folder? I don't know OS X. Maybe you try a different cache folder location.

Even if you have 5GB of RAM, PSE can't make use of all of it because it is likely to be a 32 bit program (if not 16 bit).  PSE2 is very old made for Windows 2000 or Windows 98 but this was all before my time so my facts must be wrong here.
I am amazed that you managed to install it on Windows 7 in the first place.
You might want to try this link:

Why do I get "Not enough RAM to launch" pop up when I try to open PhotoDeluxe 4 on my new PC?

Which version of windows are you using?
Is your windows system 32 or 64 bit?
It may be that PhotoDeluxe 4 just won't work on newer windows operating systems.
Have you tried right clicking on the PhotoDeluxe 4 shortcut selecting Properties and trying a Compatibility mode such as windows xp or windows 2000 under the Compatibility tab?

  • Photoshop CS2 Not Enough RAM error message (wrong forum)

For some strange reason, my copy of Photoshop CS2 (macintosh) has started giving me an error message after program start up: could not complete your request because there is not enough RAM. I don't have to do anything. This message pops up about 1 minute after I start the program. The program works fine. I just close the window and go on. I haven't installed any new plug ins or changes to my prefs or hardware configuration. This just started for no apparent reason. It doesnt't refuse to work, it's just annoying. I've tried deleting the Photoshop prefs file and reinstalling the program from the master disc. Didn't help. I'm running OS 10.4.2 on a dual 1.8 gz processor mac with 4 gigs of RAM; Photoshop set to retain 60% of that. Anyone with any ideas about this, or should I just quit whining and go back to work...

  • "Not enough RAM" to print

I'm trying to print a 4.8 meg jpeg on my Epson 200P. It printed the partial-page test run just fine. But now that I'm trying to print on the full page, it's saying, "Not enought memory to complete request. Please quit all unused Aps. and try again." Only there are no other open apps. The second warning says virtually the same, "Not enough RAM". My OS 9 has plenty of RAM, but it doesn't seem to be working for this procedure. I've tried the following:
    1. Choosing the printer, without background printing
    2. Allocating more and then less memory to Photoshop
    Can anybody help?

    Hi, friendlyfire -
    1. Does Apple Talk need to remain active, or is it only for printer sharing?
There's no direct answer for that, other than... it depends. If your printer requires AppleTalk, then yes, it needs to be active, and on the same port as the printer. If you have no devices connected which need AppleTalk, then it can be turned off.
Note - AppleTalk can be very persistent. In some configs, to make it let go of a port it is necessary to assign it to an unused port (via the AppleTalk control panel) and then turn it off.
    2. Minimum Memory vs. Preferred Memory?
The primary item to change is the Preferred memory allocation. From the applicable Apple Kbase article (Article #18278) -
The next time the application is opened, the system is asked to allocate the amount of memory in the preferred memory size box. If the system does not have the requested free RAM available, it tries to allocate a progressively decreasing amount of RAM until it decreases to the amount in the minimum requirements box in the Get Info window. If the amount of free RAM available falls below the minimum, the system reports there is not enough memory open the application.
    3. I found the Apps you were referring to, and increased the memory - to no avail. Do I need to restart, in order for this to apply? Also, the files were rather small. Do they need to coincide with the size of the file I'm printing, or does the memory only need to be sufficient to make the software run?
Though it should not be necessary, restarting would not hurt at that point.
The files do not need to correspond in size with the size of the file to be printed.
It may help to know at this point what kind of printer you have.

  • Not enough ram when there is

I'm trying to open a small .pdf file
Photoshop is telling me it wont open, that there is not enough ram.
It's not on all files, I tried re-saving the file it is messing up on but it still does it.
I'm running the newest macbook pro with 16g ram
    300gig of space is available.
    I tried rebooting the computer.

What exactly is the error message that comes up? Is it something like - "Not enough disk space to open"
The actual error message is really helpful in questions like this

  • PS CC 2014 requires less than what my laptop is capable of, but still says "not enough ram". Help?

I have an Acer Aspire with Windows 7. I downloaded Photoshop CC 2014, which said it's requirements were less than what my laptop has, plus I upgraded the ram to 8 already. If I go to lighting, it opens, stalls, then says not enough ram, and another message about making sure things are enabled, etc etc, which I have already done. What do I do?

It says ram on one message, and talks about graphics card on another. The first message that pops up says the 3D feature require that "use graphics processor is enabled in the performance preferences. Your video card must meet the minimum requirement and you may need to check that your driver is working correctly. Once that message is closed the next message that pops up says unable to perform function you do not have enough RAM.

  • Render Not Enough Ram

I feel like this must be a well-documented subject, but I'm in a desperate rush to export this project and could not find the information I'm looking for online.  I certainly don't want to spam the board with questions that are well-documented, so if this annoys anyone, please ignore me.
I set my project to render 1920x1080 overnight, but it got to a frame in the middle and turned back an error saying that there was not enough RAM to render.  I tried to copy the exact error, but it disappeared, although it said something along the lines of "decrease memory requirements or increase RAM".
Is there anything I can do to decrease the memory requirements of the scene without changing things visually?  Is there a way to manually make my computer use all the RAM it has on this? I have 8 GB of RAM, so I wasn't expecting a problem.
Right now I'm restarting my computer and trying again, hopefully to clear as much RAM as possible.
Edit:  I checked my memory settings and all possible RAM is allocated to AE.  I can't give it any more.

It said something about "shadow fragments", so I'm tempted to think you are spot-on about the shadow maps.
I didn't use many effects, but all the images I used were very high-quality, so I'm guessing that's the problem.
This is a music video, so if I render separately, how will I be able to piece together the entire thing? By re-importing the renders and piecing them together and rendering that? Is that the best way.

  • Not enough RAM - CS2

    Hi!
To begin I will say that we have been using Photoshop CS 2 in our company for about two years without a problem. The problems started last friday. I have not changed any settings, installed any plugins etc. before these problems started. Neither has the computer hardware changed.
Photoshop starts nicely. You can use it without a problem for a while, until suddenly it says (depending on the action) "Not enough RAM". After that I can't save, but I can continue editing as if nothing had happened. Normally Photshop  takes roughly 1gt of RAM when idle, but the allocated memory just keeps on growing the further I go with my photoshopping. After a while the Photoshop memory count rises to about 2gt. I have 3gt of RAM and there's always about 2gt not in use when Photoshop is inactive.
Sometimes when i launch Photoshop my whole computer crashes. No blue screens of death or anything, just a simple reset. This also occured while i was starting the uninstallation program.
The best way to see this problem is with the Text tool. Creating a text layer takes much more longer than it used to. Copy-pasting is just something I can't do because it takes forever.
I have read the FAQ, adjusted history and cache settings to small, scratch disks (1st startup, 2nd another partition), reseted my preferences and ultimately reinstalled Photoshop. My Photoshop is up-to-date. I have tried running Photoshop on Windows 98 compatibility setting. My computer temperatures are good. I have also defragmented and ran memtests.
Thank you for your help, it's really hard to get jobs done right now. I will gladly answer your questions.

    Hi, same problem here -
I have been using CS2 for 4 years, and I keep getting the same message regarding not enough RAM over and over again during the years. It's not happenig all the time - it seems to pop up every two or three months. Usually I don't get the message, but sometimes, when I work on files with a lot of text - such as broshures or flyers, or menu pages - it's almost impossible to work.
It takes forever to initialise the text engine, sometimes I get the message "something prevented the text engine from being initialised".
I know I will get the message for not enough RAM when all the text disappears whie I am typing and when I click anything after that that annoying message pops up.
I don't know waht to do - I save every 2-3 minutes, because I don't know when it will surprise me. It's really frustrating-  I broke two keyboard while "dealing" with the problem.
    My PC specs are:
    AMD Athlon 2800+
    1,8 GHz, 2 Gb RAM
I tired allocating 70 % of my RAM to Photoshop, then I changed it to 50 %, then I read somewhere that it is good to be 30 % - did that, too.
I have only one partition on my hard drive, one physical drive;  first scratch disk - startup, second - C:/
    Any ideas?
